Fanfic / A City Fallen

Go To

A City Fallen is a fanfic by Palaeontologica. Initially a crossover between Arcane and Primeval, it diversified to include several franchises, including one of the author's previous works. While the series is set in the same reality as Arcane, focusing on the city of Piltover and the surrounding area, plot elements such as anomalies are taken from Primeval.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: The very existence of the Ceratosaurus. The appendix confirms that the original ending strongly involved them.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Jinx is marginally less psychotic than in the original. Marginally.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: The black Tyrannosaurus rex breaks into the facility Jinx and Vi are sheltering in, and is about to devour them. Cue the arrival of the Vastatosaurus rex.
  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • There's no way the megopterans could reproduce at the rate at which they do.
    • With his obvious lack of external ears, Hwëdværian should not be so accomplished at echolocation.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology:
    • The Quetzalcoatlus is implied to be much larger than the real animal.
    • The gorgonopsid is not only too large, but its skull structure is entirely wrong. This is excusable, though, since it's the same one from episode 1.6 of Primeval.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: The Vastatosaurus rex in Chapter 21. After devouring Danny alive, it begins chasing Caitlyn and Vi, it gets distracted when the latter throws a gun at it.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology:
    • The future predators from the original series have the same abilities they did in Season 1. While their biology is explored in less detail than some other creatures, their ears are stated to have atrophied to mere holes.
    • The megopterans have developed a sort of lung, which is why they're so big.
    • The Quetzalcoatlus, a recurring threat throughout the series, possesses a spiny tongue with which it grabs its prey.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: The camouflage beasts from Primeval are able to almost instantaneously change colours and move a lightning-fast speed.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: The Quetzalcoatlus brutally attacks and effectively tortures Caitlyn and Jinx, just for the hell of it. It's enough to drive the latter over the edge.
  • Convenient Cranny: The cavity where Caitlyn and Vi hide from the Quetzalcoatlus. It doesn't help.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The fight between the Quetzalcoatlus and the Vastatosaurus rex. The former suffers an agonizing death.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Quetzalcoatlus has its wing bitten off, gets pinned to the ground, loses its beak, and then gets decapitated, all by the Vastatosaurus rex.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Vi has a nightmare where she's attacked by a huge, muscular creature with fangs. Later on, she picks up on just how similar it looked to the gorgonopsid.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • The first we see of Jinx is when she blows up a building, killing and badly injuring a squadron of enforcers.
    • The arrival of Alan Jonah.
  • Feathered Fiend: The Callidaves. They hunt by ambushing their prey from the treetops, pinning them down, and either stabbing them in the head or slashing them to pieces with their claws. The only reason nobody died was that Jinx named their leader, leading to the theropods realizing their prey was as intelligent as them.
  • Gorn: Nearly every confrontation has extreme violence.
  • It Can Think: The Callidaves nyx, future predators, Quetzalcoatlus, and Utahraptor all have their own versions of this.
  • Mysterious Animal Senses: At one point, Hwëdværian claims that Jinx smells of sadness.
  • Pheromones:
    • The camouflage beast produces these whenever it's in the vicinity of a megopteran nest. These pheromones placate the bugs.
    • When a megopteran dies, it emits pheromones that attract others.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: To an extent, Hwëdværian. On coming through the anomaly, his initial goal was to kill everything in sight and then bring his pack-mates through. Upon encountering Jinx and realizing they could communicate, he calmed down somewhat, though his natural aggression and bloodlust still shines through in fights.
  • Religion of Evil: The Ordo Cranii in Demons and Harpies. Believing it to be a saviour sent by God, they worship a skullcrawler.
  • Sadist: The Quetzalcoatlus. Following its initial encounter with the humans, it systematically stalks and attacks them, first almost killing Caitlyn and then Jinx.
  • Sequel Hook: In the epilogue, Alan Jonah is seen giving a vial of Shimmer to a man. That man is Lewis Dodgson.
  • Shout-Out: Alan Jonah's first scene is a reference to his introduction in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
  • Super-Intelligence: The Callidaves, especially the leader. While not the most technologically advanced race, they have basic stone tools, and have mastered the usage of fire. They can also recognize tones and the usage of names, which is how Jinx accidentally prevents an attack by giving their leader a name, Spindles.
  • T. Rexpy: The Vastatosaurus rex. It's a direct descendant of Tyrannosaurus, but is far larger and more aggressive.
  • Two-Faced: Cyclops, one of the Utahraptors from Primitive War, has a knife stuck in his right eye from a fight.
  • Xenofiction: Some scenes are from the POV of animals, notably the Quetzalcoatlus.
