The Hunger Games: The Second Quarter Quell provides examples of:
- Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. Haymitch is portrayed as strong and savvy as he was in the book, but the only reason the axe doesn't kill him when it flies back is because he passed out from blood loss right before it flew back in his direction.
- Artistic License – Physics: The axe's blade pointed at Haymitch when the District 1 girl throws it at him. Had it bounced off the forcefield, it should still be pointing away from the District 1 girl when flying back at her, not towards her.
- Face Death with Dignity: The girl trying to save her friend in the beginning sees the District 1 girl pursuing her with her axe and decides to just meet her fate than run.
- In Medias Res: The cold open is partway through the game with a tribute killed through undisclosed circumstances and his friend trying to save him. It's never established what killed him note or whether this occurred before or after the volcanic eruption.
- Miles Gloriosus: The first career tribute Haymitch kills loudly screams and holds his club overhead to kill Haymitch. This gets his attention and he slits the career's throat before he can strike.
- Smash to Black:
- The cold open ends with a tribute accepting her fate of being axed by the District 1 girl and the screen cuts to black, followed by her cannon firing
- The last shot is the District 1 girl still wide-eyed in shock at why her axe came flying back at her, the screen cuts to black and the cannon fires.
- The Voiceless: The District 1 girl is portrayed as never talking, just grunting. This makes her all the more intimidating as a silent assassin.
