Memory is a Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction by DeviantArt user Rainbowthefox. It can be read either here or here

The story tells the tale of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, two years prior to the Bite of '87 and Fazbear's fall from grace. After Foxy accidentally runs into a wall, he strangely starts to develop a vastly improved memory, giving him human-like emotions. The other animatronics follow suit, becoming more emotional and intelligent with each passing day. While the children are amazed to see the animatronics remember them from visit to visit, the staff and parents begin to get worried. There's more to emotions than just harmless play, after all...

Has a prequel, in the form of Diner Lovin, which is set in Fredbear's Family Diner and stars Golden Freddy and Springtrap prior to their decommissioning.

Memory was later canceled, and will never see completion, according to its author.

Tropes:

  • Alternate Universe: Amongst other small changes, in the Memory universe, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a sequel instead of a prequel. Also, Diner Lovin’ states that, in the Memory universe, Golden Freddy and Springtrap were the main animatronics at Fredbear’s Family Diner, which Five Nights at Freddy's 4 actually confirmed.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the first game, Mike Schmidt was the playable character (and, according to some theories, the Purple Man himselfnote ). Here, he’s just a child who frequents the pizzeria.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When the story was first posted, the original chapters were a bit different than they are now, and numerous changes were made afterwards.
  • Lighter and Softer: Justified, since it takes place two years before all the security-guard murdering madness from the Five Nights at Freddy's series began.
  • Retcon: Several of the chapters were edited prior to the hiatus, removing some more unnecessary elements. Things such as Mike being an abused child were completely removed, and the unedited chapters have been lost forever.
