The story revolves around the heroes of the first five Marvel Cinematic Universe films (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger) banding together to form the eponymous super team as they tie up several unresolved plot threads from those movies.

Warning: Unmarked spoilers for the previous films below.

Steve Rogers (Captain America), found frozen alive and thawed in the modern day, must come to terms with the loss of his past life while trying to cope with the modern world. Meanwhile, Loki (the Big Bad of Thor) manages to make his way to Earth in pursuit of the Tesseract, and an entire army follows him.

S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury recruits Rogers to join The Avengers alongside Tony Stark (Iron Man), Thor, Bruce Banner (and The Hulk), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Clint Barton (Hawkeye) to face the threat of Loki's invasion. With conflicting personalities and motivations for joining, the team must set their differences aside and work together if they hope to save the world.

A globally phenomenal success in critical, popular and financial terms, it is the highest grossing non-James Cameron film ever.

An eight-issue prequel comic, The Avengers Prelude: Fury's Big Week has also been released,, tying up loose ends from all the previous movies and setting the stage for this one. A second prequel mini-series focusing on Black Widow's activities leading up to the movie was also released.

Has a 2015 sequel Avengers: Age Of Ultron and 2018 / 2019 sequel duology Avengers: Infinity War. If you're looking for the 1998 film based on the British TV series The Avengers, that's over at The Avengers (1998). Don't worry, we won't tell.

The Avengers assembles all of its tropes into the following subpages:
