* The citizens of Halloween Town from ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'', are textbook examples. They even say as much in the opening song (see the quotes page). Even though they're all skeletons, Frankenstein-esque monsters, ghosts, vampires, a MadScientist, etc., for the most part they're just fun guys who love a good Halloween. The only one who's really evil is [[BigBad Oogie Boogie]] - and he isn't exactly popular with the others.
** However, they did kidnap SantaClaus, and [[TerribleTrio Lock, Shock and Barrel]] memorably sang a song about different ways to kill him. Of course, said children work for Oogie Boogie, and Jack hadn't meant for Santa to come to any harm...
** The children also live in a land of zombies, vampires, living skeletons, and a reanimating MadScientist, so ''[[FridgeBrilliance being dead doesn't mean ceasing to exist for them]]'', obviously.
** Oogie Boogie is actually from a completely different (and very dead) holiday, so he's not really from Halloween Town anyway, as one of the video games reveals.
** This is pointed out in ''KingdomHearts'', when Sora, Donald, and Goofy wonder why Jack would help them stop the Heartless. Jack explains that while the people of Halloween Town love scaring people, they don't want anyone to actually be hurt, like the Heartless do.
** Jack actually ''did'' tell Lock, Shock, and Barrel not to send Santa to Oogie. [[{{TooDumbToLive}} To actually]] ''[[{{TooDumbToLive}} trust]]'' [[{{TooDumbToLive}} them to keep their word, however]] . . . . .

* ''WesternAnimation/CorpseBride'' also plays on this trope. The undead are jovial and friendly both to each other and to mortals, while a lot of the mortals themselves are jerks. However, the dead are also shown as (literally) bright and colorful whereas the mortals appear in what can only be called 'the Tim Burton palette'.
** This extends to the animal residents of the Underworld who are Emily's friends and supportive of her: the Maggot who looks like Peter Lorre and is chatty and friendly, if caustic, with the corpses that he inhabits and the Black Widow Spider who is ready to groom Victor for his wedding without being asked.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNIMH'': The Great Owl, who is neutral. Also, Nicodemus; not only is he scary and ugly (the "ugly" being mostly because of how [[UncannyValley disturbingly anthropomorphic he is]]), but also actually quite dark in himself (largely thanks to the fact that the colours in the movie are [[RealIsBrown quite dull and brown]], as was the style in fantastic films of the time).
** There's also Jeremy, who's a crow, but is willing to help Mrs. Frisby.
* The Gods of ''WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife'' could count for this.
** La Muerta is a [[DontFearTheReaper Death God]], a ruler of her own branch of the underworld and her face is paint evocative of that of a frickin' skull, her name translating to the feminine form of "death". Even then, she is displayed as being very benevolent. The realm she rules over - [[SugarBowl The Land of the Remembered]] - is a joyous and wonderful place, filled with endless fiestas where the remembered dead enjoy themselves senseless. Her body is made of sugar candy (her face paint resembling sugar skulls), with [[FlowerMotifs marigold flowers]] and lit candles surrounding her clothes.
** While not necessarily "good", Xibalba [[EverybodyHatesHades isn't really all that bad either]]. His body is made of black tar, his physiology resembling that of a cross between a skeleton and a [[FallenAngel fallen angel]], his colors primarily [[EvilWearsBlack black]] and [[SicklyGreenGlow green]] with [[RedEyesTakeWarning little red skulls for pupils]]. He rules over the [[CrapsackWorld Land of the Forgotten]], an ash-filled wasteland where the forgotten dead stand around doing nothing but be miserable before crumbling to dust. He cheats in a bet with La Muerte (who, by the way, is also his estranged wife) so that he could rule the Land of the Remembered instead. He cheats, he lies, has little faith in humanity... but again, he's not ''all'' bad. When Manolo wins his challenge, Xibalba begrudgingly admits his respect for him and gives him back his life like he wagered, and even cheers him on in the battle of San Angel against Chakal. The whole time, Xibalba is shown to still love his wife La Muerte, even when she was still angry will him, literally melting by her touch, and by the end [[LoveRedeems he apologizes to her for his transgressions]], earning back her trust [[TheBigDamnKiss as they kiss, letting loose fireworks]].
** Manolo, TheHero of our story, wears a black suit on skulls on it, but is [[TheLancer Joaquin]] and [[ActionGirl Maria]]'s best friend.
* ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'': Toothless the dragon is completely black, uses the cover of night to his advantage, his breed is considered the scariest and most dangerous dragon of all, and is on two different occasions referred to as something unholy. The dragon hand-guide describes his breed as an "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself" and Hiccup's father calls him "Devil" in one scene. However, he's also one of the main characters, a good guy, and [[UglyCute freakin' adorable]].
* Creator/{{Pixar}}:
** Rosie from ''WesternAnimation/ABugsLife'' is possibly the friendliest of the circus bugs despite being a black widow spider.
** Gill from ''WesternAnimation/FindingNemo'' is a sinister-looking Moorish Idol, but he actually helps Nemo and the other fish in the fish tank escape back into the ocean. The sharks are friendly as well, as long as they don't smell blood.
** ''WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}'' - Anton Ego looks like he could be a potential villain, but as it turns out, he's just a very harsh critic trying to find a restaurant worth remembering for.
** In ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'', [[TheAllegedCar Lemons]] are evil, but Otis, the beaten-up car seen in the BookEnds, is friendly.
** The lesson of the story of ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut'' is that the emotions thought of as negative (Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear) are as important as the ones thought of as positive, such as Joy.
** ''WesternAnimation/{{Coco}}'':
*** The Land of the Dead is actually a thriving community of skeletons who are actually friendly and even help Miguel during his journey.
*** Then there is Hector, a disheveled skeleton con man who is actually a NiceGuy [[spoiler:and Miguel's great-great-grandfather]].
*** Let's not forget Dante, a black hairless dog [[spoiler: who is a benevolent spirit guide]].
* Franchise/DisneyAnimatedCanon:
** The Gypsies from ''Disney/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame''. This is especially noticeable with Esmeralda's design.
** The Beast from ''[[Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast Beauty and the Beast]]'' is a complete inversion of the classical giant, hulking and evil monster stereotype. He's instead gentle, nice and brave, but not until after he met Belle.
** Sir Bart in ''Disney/TheSwordInTheStone''. He is a menacing BlackKnight, but proves to be a ReasonableAuthorityFigure by standing up for Wart and allowing him a chance to prove himself.
** ''Disney/TheAristocats'': Berlioz and Scat Cat have black fur but they're nonetheless good guy.
** ''Disney/{{Mulan}}'''s steed Khan is a black horse, but he's one of the heroes.
** Disney plays with its portrayal of villains in ''Disney/TheLionKingIISimbasPride''. Kovu and the other Outlands lions are drawn exactly like Scar (lean build, dark coloring, pointed facial features), but only Zira is actually evil. Especially true for Kovu, who looks like a more muscular version of Scar, and even gets a similar scar after a while, but is a very kind lion.
** ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' looks very scary and is a video game villain... but being the villain of his game is actually his job and [[MeanCharacterNiceActor when he's not doing his job, he's very friendly.]] There's also Sergeant Calhoun, who dresses in black armor, but she's also the hero of her own game and one of the main characters.
** ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'': Kristoff wears black and dark brown clothing with dark grey fur lining and a deep red sash and collar, but he's the Deutergonist and [[TruthInTelevision that dark clothing tends to absorb heat better]].
** Go Go Tomago from ''Disney/BigHero6'' wears dark, edgy clothing, but aside from being a DeadpanSnarker is reasonable and mature. She is also the first of the group to follow Hiro's plan out of respect for [[spoiler: Tadashi]]. Subverted later however as the armor she wears in battle is bright yellow with sleek black stipes.
* The Bog King from ''WesternAnimation/StrangeMagic'' is a complicated example. He certainly looks evil by being a scowling insect humanoid. While he does kidnap and threaten an innocent Fairy princess, he's doing it to recover a LovePotion which he wants to destroy both because he hates love and that he knows it's incredible dangerous. [[spoiler: Once he and [[TheHero Marianne]] fall in love upon realizing that they are NotSoDifferent, he's able to show a more tender side. By the time he performs a HeroicSacrifice, its obvious that despite his monstrous appearance he'a good man.]]
** This also applies to [[TheHero Marianne herself]], who begins to wear darker clothing than most fairies after Roland cheated on her.
* In ''WesternAnimation/MuneGuardianOfTheMoon'', the People of Night are as respected as the People of the Day, and being Guardian of the Moon is as important a job as being the Guardian of the Sun.
* ''WesternAnimation/FireAndIce'': Just because Darkwolf has a [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast terrifying name]] and a darkness motif does not mean he's not good guy material.
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island]]'', Chomper's parents are carnivores (albeit sentient, reasonable ones).
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheChipmunkAdventure'', [[spoiler: turns out the supposedly ObviouslyEvil duo and their employer are actually cops.]]
* ''WesterAnimation/TheBraveLittleToaster'' - The Elmo St. Peter's parts appliances are broken, tinkered and messed up from whatever bad happened in their life and even have a dark sense of humor (which is misery, which comedians use in RealLife for their routines). They're also they-who-help-the-appliances-scare-Elmo-to-save-Radio.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheThiefAndTheCobbler'' has Tack, a DeliberatelyMonochrome skinned person who's the main character.
* The 1996 live-action/stop-motion adaptation of Creator/RoaldDahl's ''WesternAnimation/JamesAndTheGiantPeach'' has Miss Spider. Sure, she's solitary and mysterious unlike the other bugs (some of them live in fear of her), but she's good-hearted and hospitable to James -- spoiler alert -- because he saved her life.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheIronGiant'' has [[BadassPacifist Dean]], who's on the side of the heroes despite his main color scheme being black.
* ''WesternAnimation/BartokTheMagnificent'' (an ''WesternAnimation/{{Anastasia}}'' spin-off) - Baba Yaga is a [[{{Gonk}} gruesome-looking]] witch who lives in a dingy old house with chicken legs, but she isn't evil; just an [[HeroWithBadPublicity Heroine With Bad Publicity]] who's antisocial.
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/AGoofyMovie An Extremely Goofy Movie]]'', Beret Girl wears all black but cares for PJ and Max Goof. [[JerkJock Bradley]] [[FauxAffablyEvil Uppercrust]].....not so much.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Shrek}}'', a ogre who lives in a [[BubblegloopSwamp swamp]] and [[ThePigPen seems to have little regard for hygene]], but he is also a GentleGiant who cares for friends and family. Same goes for the supposed Big Bad Wolf and Puss In Boots, post-HeelFaceTurn, whose cape and boots are as black as pitch, but he is TheSmartGuy of Shrek's pals.
* In ''WesternAnimation/CinderellaIIDreamsComeTrue'', Prudence wears black/gray clothing but in spite of the snubby aspect of her personality, at least her heart's in the right place.

* ''WesternAnimation/HortonHearsAWho'' - [=JoJo=] has a monochrome color scheme and he's the [[{{Deuteragonist}} tritagonist]].
* The main antagonists are [[DarkIsEvil dark-themed]] but so are the cat who helps ''WesternAnimation/{{Coraline}}'' while in the Other World and Wybie who wears a black as pitch coat and a vicious-looking skull-like mask.
* ''WesternAnimation/MonstersVsAliens'' - The '50s-style monsters (Dr. Cockroach, anyone?) definitely counts as they the humans from the alien threat.
* ''WesternAnimation/DespicableMe'': Gru, post-HeelFaceTurn, wears dark as night clothing, but while he used to be a supervillain, he's become a good father and a Anti-Villain League agent; Edith, [[BlondeBrunetteRedhead the blonde of the girls]] sports a black catsuit in the sequel. The Minions also count.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Megamind}}'', post-HeelFaceTurn, as he STILL has his black mamba and blue skin. Also, Minion's a angler-in-a-fish-bowl-attached-to-a-mechanical-gorilla's-body. Suffice to say, he's a NiceGuy.
* In ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania'', the two main characters wear black and are vampires (at least Dracula is), but they're the good guys. Same goes for the monsters.
** In ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania2'', Vlad wears black and is a vampire, just like his son, [[spoiler: but is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold]].
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/AlphaAndOmega Alpha and Omega: The Legend of Saw Tooth Cave]]'', the Ghost Wolf isn't a monster; merely a specter that wanted to help someone. It helps that that someone is [[spoiler: her daughter Daria;]].
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBoxtrolls'' might be trolls, but they're heroes nonetheless. Plus, they're all [[GadgeteerGenius Gadgeteer Geniuses]].
* The Gaoul from ''WesternAnimation/TitanAE'' fit this trope nicely... creepy, red-and-black batlike aliens that really turn out to be a helpful mix of GiantFlyer and RedShirt.
* Sid Philip's mutilated toys in ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory'', despite being some of the creepiest things Pixar has ever rendered, are all pretty nice guys and have a knack for fixing things.
** The toy version of Emperor Zurg (Buzz Lightyear's archnemesis) in ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory2'' would probably count. The real reason why he appears evil is because he thinks he's evil, believing that he is the ''real'' Zurg, just like how Buzz himself thinks that he is the ''real'' Buzz. The toy Zurg is actually very friendly.
* If not AffablyEvil, [[OurGryphonsAreDifferent the Griffin]] from ''WesternAnimation/QuestForCamelot'' could arguably count. He's pretty much just the bad guy's pet, who ends up as being quite sympathetic for his ButtMonkey status, as the movie pretty much only shows him suffer in a way or another. The worst thing he did was his attempt to get revenge on the good guy's falcon ([[spoiler:and getting burned by Devon and Cornwall for that]]), but then again [[SmallAnnoyingCreature he was asking for it]].
* Disney's ''Disney/{{Tarzan}}'' movie uses this along with LightIsNotGood with symbolism with the lighting. Deep shadows represent being hidden and well protected, while sunny areas resemble being vulnerable and out in the open.

** ''Film/{{Beetlejuice}}'' is yet another example. It features a sympathetic ghost couple who try to scare off a new family that moves into their house with the intent of giving it a massive makeover. The couple meet various other undead people along the way, some hideously disfigured. The dead are all portrayed as eccentric-but-decent people, with the sole exception of the film's eponymous antihero, Betelgeuse, who's really more ChaoticNeutral.
*** The [[WesternAnimation/{{Beetlejuice}} Animated]] [[AnimatedAdaptation Adaptation]] is considerably LighterAndSofter, although it also plays into this trope. Lydia is a PerkyGoth who enjoys horror movies, insects, rainy days, and other creepy things, and she's a very nice person. Similarly, the Netherworld ranges from freaky to downright bizarre, but very few of the ghosts there are actually malevolent.
** In ''Film/{{Sleepy Hollow}}'', the Witch of the Western Woods seems like a scary old witch but just wants to help [[spoiler:and unfortunately gets killed for it]]. Also, the Hessian might seem like your typical villain [[spoiler:as he happened to be as vicious a soldier but instead of killing two girls walking by, he just shushed them and deeply cares for his horse]].
** The witch from ''Film/{{Big Fish}}''.
** His version of ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'' has [[CheshireCatGrin Chessur]], an unbelievably unsettling version of the Cheshire Cat, although he is among the good guys. To a lesser extent, the Mad Hatter and the UglyCute bear/hyena/reptile like Bandersnatch (originally a bad guy, then changing sides); [[spoiler:inthe end, the Red Queen's minions also stop being in her side. Yes, that includes the creepy card soldiers]].
*** Meanwhile, the pretty and bland people of Alice's world are almost all shown to be hypocritical, boring, domineering, or shallow.
*** The White Queen fits in weirdly here, though. Her dominion seems to be dead things, even though she's perfectly nice, so it kind of makes sense.
** The ENTIRE moral of ''Film/EdwardScissorhands'' '''is''' this. The town starts to judge him by his appearance of being scary and 'monstrous' when in fact he is the ''most'' human character in the movie, being caring and downright innocent...
* Frank the rabbit from ''Film/DonnieDarko'' certainly looks scary, and some of the things he gets Donnie to do seem downright sinister at first. However, [[spoiler: he turns out to have been well-intentioned, and everything he told Donnie to do was for the greater good]].
* ''Film/JacobsLadder'' features grotesque... things, that terrorise the protagonist throught the movie. [[spoiler: They're actually trying to help him accept his death and ascend to Heaven]].
* Part of the twist ending to ''Film/TheCabinetOfDrCaligari'', in which [[spoiler:MadScientist Caligari is actually a perfectly kind psychologist, his [[BrainwashedAndCrazy sleepwalking hitman]] is just a harmless loony, and the hero turns [[CuckoosNest out to be a paranoid psychopath]]. Although it is notable that after TheReveal, Cesare and Caligari look a lot less dark, and Francis looks a lot darker]]. Since Tim Burton gets all of his ideas from ''Caligari'', this makes perfect sense.
** ...Unless, of course, you see the very rare removed footage, which [[spoiler:pulled a DoubleSubversion and twisted this back on again, by revealing in a MindScrew moment, that the "kind psychologist" really IS Dr Caligari]].
* Creator/GuillermoDelToro's works:
** [[spoiler:Santi, the CreepyChild ghost]] in ''Film/TheDevilsBackbone''.
** It turns out that [[spoiler:the faun]] of ''Film/PansLabyrinth'' is entirely trustworthy.
** ''Film/TheOrphanage'', the intentions of [[spoiler:the ''other'' children]] weren't quite as macabre as originally thought, as they were trying to let her know something crucial.
** As if the ''Film/{{Hellboy}}'' movie hadn't already the eponymous demonic protagonist, the [[Film/HellboyIITheGoldenArmy sequel]] also introduces several magical creatures that, for most part, just want to be left alone. A notable example is [[OurAngelsAreDifferent the Angel of Death]], which is pretty weird and macabre looking, but helps nonetheless.
* The titular ''Film/{{Freaks}}'' have deformities, but they're a bunch of good folks at heart.
* Chris Adams of ''[[Film/TheMagnificentSeven1960 The Magnificent Seven]]'' wears rich, dark-colored clothing but is a hero.
* ''Film/{{Lawrence of Arabia}}'' - Sheriff Ali wears black robes to contrast our hero's white robes and khaki uniforms, but he's a loyal friend.
* ''Film/{{Monty Python and the Holy Grail}}'' - Tim the Enchanter looks like a evil wizard (black robe, horns and all), but he proves useful to our heroes and laughs off where they aren't serious about it.
* The vampiric Daywalker ''Film/{{Blade}}'' is not only dark, he's black.
* The Man in Black, from ''Film/ThePrincessBride'' dresses like a villain, even acts like one in places (more in the book than in the movie), and is eventually identified as the murderous Dread Pirate Roberts - but at the end of the day it's all subterfuge, because he's really [[spoiler:the presumed-dead hero Westley]].
* This trope and even more its reverse [[LightIsNotGood and its reverse]] are essentially the entire plot of Creator/CliveBarker's ''Film/{{Nightbreed}}'' - it's the [[HumansAreBastards humans who all act monstrously]]. Especially the one played by Creator/DavidCronenberg. However it is more complicated than simply not good and not evil in both cases. It does not hold true for all Midianites since some are willing to act on their cannibalistic urges and there are also humans with a conscience. It is more about a conflict that happens when LightIsNotGood and hates what is different and attacks it while secretly envying it, while the different side wants mostly to be left alone evil or not.
* The cenobites in the Film/{{Hellraiser}} film series may look like menacing, leather clad demon lords, but they can be reasoned with if the Lament Configuration was solved by accident or against the person’s will. Also, the cenobites see the mutilations and body modification as a form of obtaining power out of hedonistic pleasure rather than torture. They usually only inflict torture on those who were stupid enough to get on their bad side.
** The cenobite leader Pinhead looks like a typical slasher film monster with his head covered in nails, leather priest ensemble, and booming voice. However, he is an AntiHero and ReasonableAuthorityFigure who has helped the protagonist Kirsty Cotton (along with other protagonists) fight against much worse threats or against power hungry humans, even developing an OddFriendship with Kirsty later in the film series. Also, while Pinhead and the cenobites do gruesomely torture or kill those stupid enough to solve the Lament Configuration or put them in a FateWorseThanDeath, most of their [[AssholeVictim victims]] often [[LaserGuidedKarma had it coming]] [[PayEvilUntoEvil big time.]]
* Heather Miller of Film/{{Texas Chainsaw 3D}} wears dark clothing and has a penchant for making art out of chicken bones. However, she’s the heroine of the movie and also happens to be a long lost relative of Leatherface, making her a member of the Sawyer clan. This trope also applies to Leatherface in the film, who, after the rest of the Sawyer clan was killed, has simply protected the house from anyone who seeks to rob the place and he even becomes Heather’s personal protector.
* The Yamomamo tribe in Film/{{Cannibal Holocaust}} are a CannibalClan with creepy looking rituals and visages, but they are actually friendly towards people who are respectful towards them and God Forbid should anyone (like the [[BigBad ill-fated film crew]] they took a justifiable revenge on) [[TooDumbToLive try to incur their wrath.]]
* The titular character of ''Film/{{Darkman}}'' has a NightmareFace and always dresses in gloomy black like a classic villain stereotype. Yet, his main goal is to fight the worst city criminals.
* ''Film/{{Firefox}}'' - In this movie, an American pilot steals a super-advanced Soviet fighter jet and is pursued for the last third of the movie across Europe by his Cold War counterpart. The American is in all black, and the Soviet is in almost pure white. (Does it make you the bad guy if you're performing grand theft aero for LIBERTY?)
* ''Film/{{Ladyhawke}}''. Knight errant Etienne Navarre dresses in all-black armor with red flourishes, and [[spoiler: turns into a wolf at night]]. His lover Isabeau wears a fair amount of black herself; by contrast, both the BigBad (the [[SinisterMinister Bishop of Aquila]]) and his [[TheDragon Dragon]] wear white.
* ''Film/MenInBlack'':
** They are "Men In '''Black'''" but also Earth's "best, last, and only defense against the scum of the universe". Lampshaded in Creator/WillSmith's music video.

* In ''Film/BatmanBegins'', Bruce Wayne's motivation to make his persona dark and frightening is explored via SuperHeroOrigin story.
** ''Film/TheDarkKnightSaga'' deserves special mention as, probably more than any adaptation, it places a huge emphasis both on just how dark of a character Batman is, but also on how morally good and selfless he is.

** Mace Windu's fighting style, Vaapad, focuses on channeling his inner rage and bloodlust into strength and speed. He is able to go berserk on bad guys without losing control and falling to TheDarkSide.
** PlayedWith in ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi''. Luke Skywalker wears an all-black costume throughout the film, having learned Darth Vader is his father. But towards the end, Luke resists the temptation of the Dark Side, and when his shirt is unbuttoned, it's revealed to be white underneath all along. Just about every depiction of him in the Expanded Universe has him in some variation of that costume.
** From the prequel trilogy, Anakin Skywalker started this way before he turned to the Dark Side.
** The Pau'ans. They have black, unexpressive eyes, jagged teeth, pale skin, are nocturnal, and are obligate carnivores who feed on raw flesh. Despite this, they willingly help Obi-Wan, and apart from the Grand Inquisitor, they are generally a peaceful people.

* ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'' - Mothra's dark counterpart Battra looks very scary and while he's pretty rude, he's really hero potential. This also applies to Godzilla himself, who's charcoal grey, but is more of a Anti-Hero than a villain.
** Zig-zagged in ''Film/{{Godzilla 2014}}''. While Franchise/{{Godzilla}} is potentially as dangerous to humanity as the Mutos (if not more so), he also serves as a DestructiveSavior. It is notable that Godzilla does not go out of his way to destroy stuff like he usually does.
* While in ''{{Film/Maleficent}}'', the titular character herself zig-zags between this and DarkIsEvil, her [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette black clad, black haired, black eyed]] servant, Diaval, is one of the most gentle and caring characters in the film. Through most of the movie, the aliens play up DarkIsEvil to its maximum, but the protagonist gradually develops a conscience and reveals her true form at the end, well past the HeelFaceTurn. This form is [[spoiler:a black skinne dhumanoid with yellow eyes]], something that lived up clearly to her previous malevolence, but has affected her development of empathy.

* ''Film/DarkAngelTheAscent'': Demons are not inherently evil beings, but more or less the jailers and torturers of Hell who have been given the job to punish the wicked. They're part of the same cosmic order as the Angels of Heaven, and pray to God.
* Vlad III Dracula from ''Film/DraculaUntold''. His Impaler armour is dark red with a dragon on it. Plus, you know, [[BadPowersGoodPeople vampire]]. Nonetheless, he is a WisePrince and remains heroic through the film.
* In ''Film/WarCraft2016'', [[spoiler:Alodi]]'s true form is a [[spoiler:black cube]], and it first appears to Khadgar as a shadowy, dementor-like figure. It aids Khadgar, and [[spoiler:has been protecting Azeroth from fel for centuries.]]
* ''Film/HarryPotterAndThePrisonerOfAzkaban'': Sirius Black can transform into a scary-looking dog. In his human form, he looks disheveled. But its clear he's a good guy.

* The citizens of Halloween Town from ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'', are textbook examples. They even say as much in the opening song (see the quotes page). Even though they're all skeletons, Frankenstein-esque monsters, ghosts, vampires, a MadScientist, etc., for the most part they're just fun guys who love a good Halloween. The only one who's really evil is [[BigBad Oogie Boogie]] - and he isn't exactly popular with the others.
** However, they did kidnap SantaClaus, and [[TerribleTrio Lock, Shock and Barrel]] memorably sang a song about different ways to kill him. Of course, said children work for Oogie Boogie, and Jack hadn't meant for Santa to come to any harm...
** The children also live in a land of zombies, vampires, living skeletons, and a reanimating MadScientist, so ''[[FridgeBrilliance being dead doesn't mean ceasing to exist for them]]'', obviously.
** Oogie Boogie is actually from a completely different (and very dead) holiday, so he's not really from Halloween Town anyway, as one of the video games reveals.
** This is pointed out in ''KingdomHearts'', when Sora, Donald, and Goofy wonder why Jack would help them stop the Heartless. Jack explains that while the people of Halloween Town love scaring people, they don't want anyone to actually be hurt, like the Heartless do.
** Jack actually ''did'' tell Lock, Shock, and Barrel not to send Santa to Oogie. [[{{TooDumbToLive}} To actually]] ''[[{{TooDumbToLive}} trust]]'' [[{{TooDumbToLive}} them to keep their word, however]] . . . . .

* ''WesternAnimation/CorpseBride'' also plays on this trope. The undead are jovial and friendly both to each other and to mortals, while a lot of the mortals themselves are jerks. However, the dead are also shown as (literally) bright and colorful whereas the mortals appear in what can only be called 'the Tim Burton palette'.
** This extends to the animal residents of the Underworld who are Emily's friends and supportive of her: the Maggot who looks like Peter Lorre and is chatty and friendly, if caustic, with the corpses that he inhabits and the Black Widow Spider who is ready to groom Victor for his wedding without being asked.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNIMH'': The Great Owl, who is neutral. Also, Nicodemus; not only is he scary and ugly (the "ugly" being mostly because of how [[UncannyValley disturbingly anthropomorphic he is]]), but also actually quite dark in himself (largely thanks to the fact that the colours in the movie are [[RealIsBrown quite dull and brown]], as was the style in fantastic films of the time).
** There's also Jeremy, who's a crow, but is willing to help Mrs. Frisby.
* The Gods of ''WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife'' could count for this.
** La Muerta is a [[DontFearTheReaper Death God]], a ruler of her own branch of the underworld and her face is paint evocative of that of a frickin' skull, her name translating to the feminine form of "death". Even then, she is displayed as being very benevolent. The realm she rules over - [[SugarBowl The Land of the Remembered]] - is a joyous and wonderful place, filled with endless fiestas where the remembered dead enjoy themselves senseless. Her body is made of sugar candy (her face paint resembling sugar skulls), with [[FlowerMotifs marigold flowers]] and lit candles surrounding her clothes.
** While not necessarily "good", Xibalba [[EverybodyHatesHades isn't really all that bad either]]. His body is made of black tar, his physiology resembling that of a cross between a skeleton and a [[FallenAngel fallen angel]], his colors primarily [[EvilWearsBlack black]] and [[SicklyGreenGlow green]] with [[RedEyesTakeWarning little red skulls for pupils]]. He rules over the [[CrapsackWorld Land of the Forgotten]], an ash-filled wasteland where the forgotten dead stand around doing nothing but be miserable before crumbling to dust. He cheats in a bet with La Muerte (who, by the way, is also his estranged wife) so that he could rule the Land of the Remembered instead. He cheats, he lies, has little faith in humanity... but again, he's not ''all'' bad. When Manolo wins his challenge, Xibalba begrudgingly admits his respect for him and gives him back his life like he wagered, and even cheers him on in the battle of San Angel against Chakal. The whole time, Xibalba is shown to still love his wife La Muerte, even when she was still angry will him, literally melting by her touch, and by the end [[LoveRedeems he apologizes to her for his transgressions]], earning back her trust [[TheBigDamnKiss as they kiss, letting loose fireworks]].
** Manolo, TheHero of our story, wears a black suit on skulls on it, but is [[TheLancer Joaquin]] and [[ActionGirl Maria]]'s best friend.
* ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'': Toothless the dragon is completely black, uses the cover of night to his advantage, his breed is considered the scariest and most dangerous dragon of all, and is on two different occasions referred to as something unholy. The dragon hand-guide describes his breed as an "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself" and Hiccup's father calls him "Devil" in one scene. However, he's also one of the main characters, a good guy, and [[UglyCute freakin' adorable]].

** Rosie from ''WesternAnimation/ABugsLife'' is possibly the friendliest of the circus bugs despite being a black widow spider.
** Gill from ''WesternAnimation/FindingNemo'' is a sinister-looking Moorish Idol, but he actually helps Nemo and the other fish in the fish tank escape back into the ocean. The sharks are friendly as well, as long as they don't smell blood.
** ''WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}'' - Anton Ego looks like he could be a potential villain, but as it turns out, he's just a very harsh critic trying to find a restaurant worth remembering for.
** In ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'', [[TheAllegedCar Lemons]] are evil, but Otis, the beaten-up car seen in the BookEnds, is friendly.
** The lesson of the story of ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut'' is that the emotions thought of as negative (Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear) are as important as the ones thought of as positive, such as Joy.

*** The Land of the Dead is actually a thriving community of skeletons who are actually friendly and even help Miguel during his journey.
*** Then there is Hector, a disheveled skeleton con man who is actually a NiceGuy [[spoiler:and Miguel's great-great-grandfather]].
*** Let's not forget Dante, a black hairless dog [[spoiler: who is a benevolent spirit guide]].
* Franchise/DisneyAnimatedCanon:
** The Gypsies from ''Disney/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame''. This is especially noticeable with Esmeralda's design.
** The Beast from ''[[Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast Beauty and the Beast]]'' is a complete inversion of the classical giant, hulking and evil monster stereotype. He's instead gentle, nice and brave, but not until after he met Belle.
** Sir Bart in ''Disney/TheSwordInTheStone''. He is a menacing BlackKnight, but proves to be a ReasonableAuthorityFigure by standing up for Wart and allowing him a chance to prove himself.
** ''Disney/TheAristocats'': Berlioz and Scat Cat have black fur but they're nonetheless good guy.
** ''Disney/{{Mulan}}'''s steed Khan is a black horse, but he's one of the heroes.
** Disney plays with its portrayal of villains in ''Disney/TheLionKingIISimbasPride''. Kovu and the other Outlands lions are drawn exactly like Scar (lean build, dark coloring, pointed facial features), but only Zira is actually evil. Especially true for Kovu, who looks like a more muscular version of Scar, and even gets a similar scar after a while, but is a very kind lion.
** ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' looks very scary and is a video game villain... but being the villain of his game is actually his job and [[MeanCharacterNiceActor when he's not doing his job, he's very friendly.]] There's also Sergeant Calhoun, who dresses in black armor, but she's also the hero of her own game and one of the main characters.
** ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'': Kristoff wears black and dark brown clothing with dark grey fur lining and a deep red sash and collar, but he's the Deutergonist and [[TruthInTelevision that dark clothing tends to absorb heat better]].
** Go Go Tomago from ''Disney/BigHero6'' wears dark, edgy clothing, but aside from being a DeadpanSnarker is reasonable and mature. She is also the first of the group to follow Hiro's plan out of respect for [[spoiler: Tadashi]]. Subverted later however as the armor she wears in battle is bright yellow with sleek black stipes.
* The Bog King from ''WesternAnimation/StrangeMagic'' is a complicated example. He certainly looks evil by being a scowling insect humanoid. While he does kidnap and threaten an innocent Fairy princess, he's doing it to recover a LovePotion which he wants to destroy both because he hates love and that he knows it's incredible dangerous. [[spoiler: Once he and [[TheHero Marianne]] fall in love upon realizing that they are NotSoDifferent, he's able to show a more tender side. By the time he performs a HeroicSacrifice, its obvious that despite his monstrous appearance he'a good man.]]
** This also applies to [[TheHero Marianne herself]], who begins to wear darker clothing than most fairies after Roland cheated on her.
* In ''WesternAnimation/MuneGuardianOfTheMoon'', the People of Night are as respected as the People of the Day, and being Guardian of the Moon is as important a job as being the Guardian of the Sun.
* ''WesternAnimation/FireAndIce'': Just because Darkwolf has a [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast terrifying name]] and a darkness motif does not mean he's not good guy material.
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island]]'', Chomper's parents are carnivores (albeit sentient, reasonable ones).
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheChipmunkAdventure'', [[spoiler: turns out the supposedly ObviouslyEvil duo and their employer are actually cops.]]
* ''WesterAnimation/TheBraveLittleToaster'' - The Elmo St. Peter's parts appliances are broken, tinkered and messed up from whatever bad happened in their life and even have a dark sense of humor (which is misery, which comedians use in RealLife for their routines). They're also they-who-help-the-appliances-scare-Elmo-to-save-Radio.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheThiefAndTheCobbler'' has Tack, a DeliberatelyMonochrome skinned person who's the main character.
* The 1996 live-action/stop-motion adaptation of Creator/RoaldDahl's ''WesternAnimation/JamesAndTheGiantPeach'' has Miss Spider. Sure, she's solitary and mysterious unlike the other bugs (some of them live in fear of her), but she's good-hearted and hospitable to James -- spoiler alert -- because he saved her life.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheIronGiant'' has [[BadassPacifist Dean]], who's on the side of the heroes despite his main color scheme being black.
* ''WesternAnimation/BartokTheMagnificent'' (an ''WesternAnimation/{{Anastasia}}'' spin-off) - Baba Yaga is a [[{{Gonk}} gruesome-looking]] witch who lives in a dingy old house with chicken legs, but she isn't evil; just an [[HeroWithBadPublicity Heroine With Bad Publicity]] who's antisocial.
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/AGoofyMovie An Extremely Goofy Movie]]'', Beret Girl wears all black but cares for PJ and Max Goof. [[JerkJock Bradley]] [[FauxAffablyEvil Uppercrust]].....not so much.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Shrek}}'', a ogre who lives in a [[BubblegloopSwamp swamp]] and [[ThePigPen seems to have little regard for hygene]], but he is also a GentleGiant who cares for friends and family. Same goes for the supposed Big Bad Wolf and Puss In Boots, post-HeelFaceTurn, whose cape and boots are as black as pitch, but he is TheSmartGuy of Shrek's pals.
* In ''WesternAnimation/CinderellaIIDreamsComeTrue'', Prudence wears black/gray clothing but in spite of the snubby aspect of her personality, at least her heart's in the right place.

* ''WesternAnimation/DespicableMe'': Gru, post-HeelFaceTurn, wears dark as night clothing, but while he used to be a supervillain, he's become a good father and a Anti-Villain League agent; Edith, [[BlondeBrunetteRedhead the blonde of the girls]] sports a black catsuit in the sequel. The Minions also count.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Megamind}}'', post-HeelFaceTurn, as he STILL has his black mamba and blue skin. Also, Minion's a angler-in-a-fish-bowl-attached-to-a-mechanical-gorilla's-body. Suffice to say, he's a NiceGuy.
* In ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania'', the two main characters wear black and are vampires (at least Dracula is), but they're the good guys. Same goes for the monsters.
** In ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania2'', Vlad wears black and is a vampire, just like his son, [[spoiler: but is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold]].

* The Gaoul from ''WesternAnimation/TitanAE'' fit this trope nicely... creepy, red-and-black batlike aliens that really turn out to be a helpful mix of GiantFlyer and RedShirt.
* Sid Philip's mutilated toys in ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory'', despite being some of the creepiest things Pixar has ever rendered, are all pretty nice guys and have a knack for fixing things.
** The toy version of Emperor Zurg (Buzz Lightyear's archnemesis) in ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory2'' would probably count. The real reason why he appears evil is because he thinks he's evil, believing that he is the ''real'' Zurg, just like how Buzz himself thinks that he is the ''real'' Buzz. The toy Zurg is actually very friendly.
* If not AffablyEvil, [[OurGryphonsAreDifferent the Griffin]] from ''WesternAnimation/QuestForCamelot'' could arguably count. He's pretty much just the bad guy's pet, who ends up as being quite sympathetic for his ButtMonkey status, as the movie pretty much only shows him suffer in a way or another. The worst thing he did was his attempt to get revenge on the good guy's falcon ([[spoiler:and getting burned by Devon and Cornwall for that]]), but then again [[SmallAnnoyingCreature he was asking for it]].
* Disney's ''Disney/{{Tarzan}}'' movie uses this along with LightIsNotGood with symbolism with the lighting. Deep shadows represent being hidden and well protected, while sunny areas resemble being vulnerable and out in the open.

It features a sympathetic ghost couple who try to scare off a new family that moves into their house with the intent of giving it a massive makeover. The couple meet various other undead people along the way, some hideously disfigured. The dead are all portrayed as eccentric-but-decent people, with the sole exception of the film's eponymous antihero, Betelgeuse, who's really more ChaoticNeutral.
*** The [[WesternAnimation/{{Beetlejuice}} Animated]] [[AnimatedAdaptation Adaptation]] is considerably LighterAndSofter, although it also plays into this trope. Lydia is a PerkyGoth who enjoys horror movies, insects, rainy days, and other creepy things, and she's a very nice person. Similarly, the Netherworld ranges from freaky to downright bizarre, but very few of the ghosts there are actually malevolent.
** In ''Film/{{Sleepy Hollow}}'', the Witch of the Western Woods seems like a scary old witch but just wants to help [[spoiler:and unfortunately gets killed for it]]. Also, the Hessian might seem like your typical villain [[spoiler:as he happened to be as vicious a soldier but instead of killing two girls walking by, he just shushed them and deeply cares for his horse]].
** The witch from ''Film/{{Big Fish}}''.
** His version of ''Film/AliceInWonderland2010'' has [[CheshireCatGrin Chessur]], an unbelievably unsettling version of the Cheshire Cat, although he is among the good guys. To a lesser extent, the Mad Hatter and the UglyCute bear/hyena/reptile like Bandersnatch (originally a bad guy, then changing sides); [[spoiler:inthe end, the Red Queen's minions also stop being in her side. Yes, that includes the creepy card soldiers]].
*** Meanwhile, the pretty and bland people of Alice's world are almost all shown to be hypocritical, boring, domineering, or shallow.
*** The White Queen fits in weirdly here, though. Her dominion seems to be dead things, even though she's perfectly nice, so it kind of makes sense.
** The ENTIRE moral of ''Film/EdwardScissorhands'' '''is''' this. The town starts to judge him by his appearance of being scary and 'monstrous' when in fact he is the ''most'' human character in the movie, being caring and downright innocent...
* Frank the rabbit from ''Film/DonnieDarko'' certainly looks scary, and some of the things he gets Donnie to do seem downright sinister at first. However, [[spoiler: he turns out to have been well-intentioned, and everything he told Donnie to do was for the greater good]].
* ''Film/JacobsLadder'' features grotesque... things, that terrorise the protagonist throught the movie. [[spoiler: They're actually trying to help him accept his death and ascend to Heaven]].
* Part of the twist ending to ''Film/TheCabinetOfDrCaligari'', in which [[spoiler:MadScientist Caligari is actually a perfectly kind psychologist, his [[BrainwashedAndCrazy sleepwalking hitman]] is just a harmless loony, and the hero turns [[CuckoosNest out to be a paranoid psychopath]]. Although it is notable that after TheReveal, Cesare and Caligari look a lot less dark, and Francis looks a lot darker]]. Since Tim Burton gets all of his ideas from ''Caligari'', this makes perfect sense.
** ...Unless, of course, you see the very rare removed footage, which [[spoiler:pulled a DoubleSubversion and twisted this back on again, by revealing in a MindScrew moment, that the "kind psychologist" really IS Dr Caligari]].

A notable example is [[OurAngelsAreDifferent the Angel of Death]], which is pretty weird and macabre looking, but helps nonetheless.
* The titular ''Film/{{Freaks}}'' have deformities, but they're a bunch of good folks at heart.
* Chris Adams of ''[[Film/TheMagnificentSeven1960 The Magnificent Seven]]'' wears rich, dark-colored clothing but is a hero.
* ''Film/{{Lawrence of Arabia}}'' - Sheriff Ali wears black robes to contrast our hero's white robes and khaki uniforms, but he's a loyal friend.
* ''Film/{{Monty Python and the Holy Grail}}'' - Tim the Enchanter looks like a evil wizard (black robe, horns and all), but he proves useful to our heroes and laughs off where they aren't serious about it.
* The vampiric Daywalker ''Film/{{Blade}}'' is not only dark, he's black.
* The Man in Black, from ''Film/ThePrincessBride'' dresses like a villain, even acts like one in places (more in the book than in the movie), and is eventually identified as the murderous Dread Pirate Roberts - but at the end of the day it's all subterfuge, because he's really [[spoiler:the presumed-dead hero Westley]].
* This trope and even more its reverse [[LightIsNotGood and its reverse]] are essentially the entire plot of Creator/CliveBarker's ''Film/{{Nightbreed}}'' - it's the [[HumansAreBastards humans who all act monstrously]]. Especially the one played by Creator/DavidCronenberg. However it is more complicated than simply not good and not evil in both cases. It does not hold true for all Midianites since some are willing to act on their cannibalistic urges and there are also humans with a conscience. It is more about a conflict that happens when LightIsNotGood and hates what is different and attacks it while secretly envying it, while the different side wants mostly to be left alone evil or not.
* The cenobites in the Film/{{Hellraiser}} film series may look like menacing, leather clad demon lords, but they can be reasoned with if the Lament Configuration was solved by accident or against the person’s will. Also, the cenobites see the mutilations and body modification as a form of obtaining power out of hedonistic pleasure rather than torture. They usually only inflict torture on those who were stupid enough to get on their bad side.
** The cenobite leader Pinhead looks like a typical slasher film monster with his head covered in nails, leather priest ensemble, and booming voice. However, he is an AntiHero and ReasonableAuthorityFigure who has helped the protagonist Kirsty Cotton (along with other protagonists) fight against much worse threats or against power hungry humans, even developing an OddFriendship with Kirsty later in the film series. Also, while Pinhead and the cenobites do gruesomely torture or kill those stupid enough to solve the Lament Configuration or put them in a FateWorseThanDeath, most of their [[AssholeVictim victims]] often [[LaserGuidedKarma had it coming]] [[PayEvilUntoEvil big time.]]
* Heather Miller of Film/{{Texas Chainsaw 3D}} wears dark clothing and has a penchant for making art out of chicken bones. However, she’s the heroine of the movie and also happens to be a long lost relative of Leatherface, making her a member of the Sawyer clan. This trope also applies to Leatherface in the film, who, after the rest of the Sawyer clan was killed, has simply protected the house from anyone who seeks to rob the place and he even becomes Heather’s personal protector.
* The Yamomamo tribe in Film/{{Cannibal Holocaust}} are a CannibalClan with creepy looking rituals and visages, but they are actually friendly towards people who are respectful towards them and God Forbid should anyone (like the [[BigBad ill-fated film crew]] they took a justifiable revenge on) [[TooDumbToLive try to incur their wrath.]]
* The titular character of ''Film/{{Darkman}}'' has a NightmareFace and always dresses in gloomy black like a classic villain stereotype. Yet, his main goal is to fight the worst city criminals.
* ''Film/{{Firefox}}'' - In this movie, an American pilot steals a super-advanced Soviet fighter jet and is pursued for the last third of the movie across Europe by his Cold War counterpart. The American is in all black, and the Soviet is in almost pure white. (Does it make you the bad guy if you're performing grand theft aero for LIBERTY?)
* ''Film/{{Ladyhawke}}''. Knight errant Etienne Navarre dresses in all-black armor with red flourishes, and [[spoiler: turns into a wolf at night]]. His lover Isabeau wears a fair amount of black herself; by contrast, both the BigBad (the [[SinisterMinister Bishop of Aquila]]) and his [[TheDragon Dragon]] wear white.

** Mace Windu's fighting style, Vaapad, focuses on channeling his inner rage and bloodlust into strength and speed. He is able to go berserk on bad guys without losing control and falling to TheDarkSide.
** PlayedWith in ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi''. Luke Skywalker wears an all-black costume throughout the film, having learned Darth Vader is his father. But towards the end, Luke resists the temptation of the Dark Side, and when his shirt is unbuttoned, it's revealed to be white underneath all along. Just about every depiction of him in the Expanded Universe has him in some variation of that costume.
** From the prequel trilogy, Anakin Skywalker started this way before he turned to the Dark Side.
** The Pau'ans. They have black, unexpressive eyes, jagged teeth, pale skin, are nocturnal, and are obligate carnivores who feed on raw flesh. Despite this, they willingly help Obi-Wan, and apart from the Grand Inquisitor, they are generally a peaceful people.

** Zig-zagged in ''Film/{{Godzilla 2014}}''. While Franchise/{{Godzilla}} is potentially as dangerous to humanity as the Mutos (if not more so), he also serves as a DestructiveSavior. It is notable that Godzilla does not go out of his way to destroy stuff like he usually does.
* While in ''{{Film/Maleficent}}'', the titular character herself zig-zags between this and DarkIsEvil, her [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette black clad, black haired, black eyed]] servant, Diaval, is one of the most gentle and caring characters in the film. * The citizens of Halloween Town from ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'', are textbook examples. They even say as much in the opening song (see the quotes page). Even though they're all skeletons, Frankenstein-esque monsters, ghosts, vampires, a MadScientist, etc., for the most part they're just fun guys who love a good Halloween. The only one who's really evil is [[BigBad Oogie Boogie]] - and he isn't exactly popular with the others.
** However, they did kidnap SantaClaus, and [[TerribleTrio Lock, Shock and Barrel]] memorably sang a song about different ways to kill him. Of course, said children work for Oogie Boogie, and Jack hadn't meant for Santa to come to any harm...
** The children also live in a land of zombies, vampires, living skeletons, and a reanimating MadScientist, so ''[[FridgeBrilliance being dead doesn't mean ceasing to exist for them]]'', obviously.
** Oogie Boogie is actually from a completely different (and very dead) holiday, so he's not really from Halloween Town anyway, as one of the video games reveals.
** This is pointed out in ''KingdomHearts'', when Sora, Donald, and Goofy wonder why Jack would help them stop the Heartless. Jack explains that while the people of Halloween Town love scaring people, they don't want anyone to actually be hurt, like the Heartless do.

** This extends to the animal residents of the Underworld who are Emily's friends and supportive of her: the Maggot who looks like Peter Lorre and is chatty and friendly, if caustic, with the corpses that he inhabits and the Black Widow Spider who is ready to groom Victor for his wedding without being asked.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNIMH'': The Great Owl, who is neutral. Also, Nicodemus; not only is he scary and ugly (the "ugly" being mostly because of how [[UncannyValley disturbingly anthropomorphic he is]]), but also actually quite dark in himself (largely thanks to the fact that the colours in the movie are [[RealIsBrown quite dull and brown]], as was the style in fantastic films of the time).
** There's also Jeremy, who's a crow, but is willing to help Mrs. Frisby.
* The Gods of ''WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife'' could count for this.
** La Muerta is a [[DontFearTheReaper Death God]], a ruler of her own branch of the underworld and her face is paint evocative of that of a frickin' skull, her name translating to the feminine form of "death". Even then, she is displayed as being very benevolent. The realm she rules over - [[SugarBowl The Land of the Remembered]] - is a joyous and wonderful place, filled with endless fiestas where the remembered dead enjoy themselves senseless. Her body is made of sugar candy (her face paint resembling sugar skulls), with [[FlowerMotifs marigold flowers]] and lit candles surrounding her clothes.
** While not necessarily "good", Xibalba [[EverybodyHatesHades isn't really all that bad either]]. His body is made of black tar, his physiology resembling that of a cross between a skeleton and a [[FallenAngel fallen angel]], his colors primarily [[EvilWearsBlack black]] and [[SicklyGreenGlow green]] with [[RedEyesTakeWarning little red skulls for pupils]]. He rules over the [[CrapsackWorld Land of the Forgotten]], an ash-filled wasteland where the forgotten dead stand around doing nothing but be miserable before crumbling to dust. He cheats in a bet with La Muerte (who, by the way, is also his estranged wife) so that he could rule the Land of the Remembered instead. He cheats, he lies, has little faith in humanity... but again, he's not ''all'' bad. When Manolo wins his challenge, Xibalba begrudgingly admits his respect for him and gives him back his life like he wagered, and even cheers him on in the battle of San Angel against Chakal. The whole time, Xibalba is shown to still love his wife La Muerte, even when she was still angry will him, literally melting by her touch, and by the end [[LoveRedeems he apologizes to her for his transgressions]], earning back her trust [[TheBigDamnKiss as they kiss, letting loose fireworks]].
** Manolo, TheHero of our story, wears a black suit on skulls on it, but is [[TheLancer Joaquin]] and [[ActionGirl Maria]]'s best friend.
* ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'': Toothless the dragon is completely black, uses the cover of night to his advantage, his breed is considered the scariest and most dangerous dragon of all, and is on two different occasions referred to as something unholy. The dragon hand-guide describes his breed as an "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself" and Hiccup's father calls him "Devil" in one scene. However, he's also one of the main characters, a good guy, and [[UglyCute freakin' adorable]].

** ''WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}'' - Anton Ego looks like he could be a potential villain, but as it turns out, he's just a very harsh critic trying to find a restaurant worth remembering for.
** In ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'', [[TheAllegedCar Lemons]] are evil, but Otis, the beaten-up car seen in the BookEnds, is friendly.
** The lesson of the story of ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut'' is that the emotions thought of as negative (Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear) are as important as the ones thought of as positive, such as Joy.

*** The Land of the Dead is actually a thriving community of skeletons who are actually friendly and even help Miguel during his journey.

** The Gypsies from ''Disney/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame''. This is especially noticeable with Esmeralda's design.
** The Beast from ''[[Disney/BeautyAndTheBeast Beauty and the Beast]]'' is a complete inversion of the classical giant, hulking and evil monster stereotype. He's instead gentle, nice and brave, but not until after he met Belle.
** Sir Bart in ''Disney/TheSwordInTheStone''. He is a menacing BlackKnight, but proves to be a ReasonableAuthorityFigure by standing up for Wart and allowing him a chance to prove himself.
** ''Disney/TheAristocats'': Berlioz and Scat Cat have black fur but they're nonetheless good guy.
** ''Disney/{{Mulan}}'''s steed Khan is a black horse, but he's one of the heroes.
** Disney plays with its portrayal of villains in ''Disney/TheLionKingIISimbasPride''. Kovu and the other Outlands lions are drawn exactly like Scar (lean build, dark coloring, pointed facial features), but only Zira is actually evil. Especially true for Kovu, who looks like a more muscular version of Scar, and even gets a similar scar after a while, but is a very kind lion.
** ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' looks very scary and is a video game villain... but being the villain of his game is actually his job and [[MeanCharacterNiceActor when he's not doing his job, he's very friendly.]] There's also Sergeant Calhoun, who dresses in black armor, but she's also the hero of her own game and one of the main characters.
** ''Disney/{{Frozen}}'': Kristoff wears black and dark brown clothing with dark grey fur lining and a deep red sash and collar, but he's the Deutergonist and [[TruthInTelevision that dark clothing tends to absorb heat better]].
** Go Go Tomago from ''Disney/BigHero6'' wears dark, edgy clothing, but aside from being a DeadpanSnarker is reasonable and mature. She is also the first of the group to follow Hiro's plan out of respect for [[spoiler: Tadashi]]. Subverted later however as the armor she wears in battle is bright yellow with sleek black stipes.
* The Bog King from ''WesternAnimation/StrangeMagic'' is a complicated example. He certainly looks evil by being a scowling insect humanoid. While he does kidnap and threaten an innocent Fairy princess, he's doing it to recover a LovePotion which he wants to destroy both because he hates love and that he knows it's incredible dangerous. [[spoiler: Once he and [[TheHero Marianne]] fall in love upon realizing that they are NotSoDifferent, he's able to show a more tender side. By the time he performs a HeroicSacrifice, its obvious that despite his monstrous appearance he'a good man.]]
** This also applies to [[TheHero Marianne herself]], who begins to wear darker clothing than most fairies after Roland cheated on her.
* In ''WesternAnimation/MuneGuardianOfTheMoon'', the People of Night are as respected as the People of the Day, and being Guardian of the Moon is as important a job as being the Guardian of the Sun.
* ''WesternAnimation/FireAndIce'': Just because Darkwolf has a [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast terrifying name]] and a darkness motif does not mean he's not good guy material.
* In ''[[WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island]]'', Chomper's parents are carnivores (albeit sentient, reasonable ones).
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheChipmunkAdventure'', [[spoiler: turns out the supposedly ObviouslyEvil duo and their employer are actually cops.]]

Sure, she's solitary and mysterious unlike the other bugs (some of them live in fear of her), but she's good-hearted and hospitable to James -- spoiler alert -- because he saved her life.

The real reason why he appears evil is because he thinks he's evil, believing that he is the ''real'' Zurg, just like how Buzz himself thinks that he is the ''real'' Buzz. The toy Zurg is actually very friendly.

He's pretty much just the bad guy's pet, who ends up as being quite sympathetic for his ButtMonkey status, as the movie pretty much only shows him suffer in a way or another. The worst thing he did was his attempt to get revenge on the good guy's falcon ([[spoiler:and getting burned by Devon and Cornwall for that]]), but then again [[SmallAnnoyingCreature he was asking for it]].
