Shūzō Oshimi (押見 修造, born 1981) is a Japanese mangaka primarily writing works for the Shonen and Seinen demographic. Some of his manga have been adapted into Anime series, live-action film and Dorama.
His works include:
- Blood on the Tracks
- Drifting Net Cafe
- The Flowers of Evil
- Happiness
- Inside Mari
- Sweet Poolside
- Welcome Back, Alice
His works provide examples of:
- Ambiguous Gender Identity: Gender, gender roles and societal expectation around gender play a big part in Welcome Back, Alice and Inside Mari, with lots of ambiguity around certain characters' gender and identities.
- Art Shift: During a character's emotional spiraling or Mind Screw moments, the art style sometimes shifts to a more sketchy, loose style, to distorted faces, or conversely, to way more realistic close-ups with detailed crosshatching.
- Coming of Age Story: Almost all his work center on teenage drama, adolescent angst and tribulations around growing up, getting into relationships and sex and navigating complex relationships with your peers.
- Dysfunction Junction: Multiple of his characters in each work have major issues surrounding past trauma, sexual dysfunction and/or identity issues.
- Fan Disservice: Oshimi's manga often include nudity and sex played for horror or squick, like showing a disheveled, pathetic man masturbating or the usually-naked vampire Nora covered in blood and guts.
- Psychotic Love Triangle: Both The Flowers of Evil and Welcome Back, Alice feature convoluted and very messy triangles and quadrangles with Sanity Slippages, stalking and nonconsensual acts included.
