Creator / Ioan Gruffudd

Ioan Gruffudd (say: Yo-wahn Griffith) is a British actor who rose to fame through two very different roles: As the hero of Horatio Hornblower, the Series of the Books by C. S. Forester, and as Mr. Fantastic in the two Fantastic Four movies. Born in Cardiff in 1973, he started out as an actor in his native Britain but moved to the US a couple of years ago and has since appeared in a number of guest appearances on TV shows as well as in movies. He landed a starring role on the CW's Film Noir-style show Ringer which was unfortunately cancelled after one season. Next, he played the main character in Forever, which was also, unfortunately, cancelled after one season.

Oh, and his first language is Welsh. Just listen.

Some of his works include:

Tropes associated with Ioan:

  • Awesome, Dear Boy: During one promotional interview for Fantastic Four, he mentioned rather enjoying playing a character nicknamed "Mr. Fantastic", and added that, frankly, as far as nicknames he might get stuck with go, it beats "Horatio Hornblower".
  • Quintessential British Gentleman: For a while, it seemed he would forever be getting typecast as this.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Has said he's determined never to lose his Welsh name, and has succeeded so far.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: When he got famous as Hornblower in the late Nineties and early Naughties, he really seemed to be enjoying interaction with fans on-line, and he was even paying a considerable sum of money to run a web-page where fans could send him greetings and kudos and he would often reply. Fans were also collecting and preserving rare stuff like videos from his child actor days or various interviews. When he got engaged, supposedly many a Fan Dumb fan-girl forgot that Celebrity Crush should be just for fun. They started sending hateful messages directed at his fiancée. No wonder Mr Gruffudd refused to pay for that.
