->"Everything that I've done so far has had a bigger budget than the last, but I've never ever felt the benefit of the bigger budget because the ideas always exceed the budget."

Edgar Howard Wright (born 18 April 1974) is a British director known for making stylish, genre-busting films, usually working with Creator/Simon Pegg and Creator/NickFrost. He is also known for his surprising talent of making films that function equally well as both deconstructions and carefully crafted stories. He is one of us, a very notable example of a film geek-come-director a la Creator/QuentinTarantino and Creator/KevinSmith, both of whom he is close friends with.

!!Directed:

* Film/DeadRight - Film/HotFuzz without the budget and with even more genre savviness.
* Film/AFistfulOfFingers - A low budget Creator/ClintEastwood parody.
* Series/Asylum
* Series/Spaced - Surreal BritCom about a writer and a comic book artist living in a flat. Brimming with references to other TV shows and movies.
* Film/ShaunOfTheDead - Guy tries to rescue his friends from zombies. He fails.
* Film/HotFuzz - Skilled cop is sent to a sleepy town where no murders, but many accidents happen.
* Don't - A trailer from the movie Film/Grindhouse.
* Film/ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld - An adaptation of the comic by Bryan Lee O'Malley. His first non-British film (shot in Toronto).
* Film/TheWorldsEnd - A group of friends from childhood reunite to finish their epic pub crawl only to find that aliens have infiltrated their old town.
* Film/BabyDriver - his first American film, shot (and set) in Atlanta, Georgia. Takes MickeyMousing to an extreme. Every scene is completely synced to the music, even the background noise!

!!Wrote:
* WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfTintin - He has a writing credit along with Creator/StevenMoffat and Creator/JoeCornish.
* Film/AntMan - He was going to direct, but then left due to CreativeDifferences.

!!Tropes associated with him include:
* AdvertisingByAssociation: Film/Sightseers is "From the makers of Film/HotFuzz, Film/Paul & Film/ShaunOfTheDead". Of course, Wright only Producers produced this film, not wrote and directed it. Note that Film/TheWorldsEnd isn't on that list because, though complete, hadn't been released yet and that Film/ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld isn't because the film was targeted at British audiences, the genre of the film is much more like the Film/BloodAndIceCreamTrilogy, RuleOfThree, and the marketing department may have wanted to noncommittally suggest that SimonPegg and Nick Frost would be in it.
* AmicableExes: With Anna Kendrick. They met on the set of Scott Pilgrim and dated for four years. A couple of years afterwards, Wright vocally supported the idea of her being as Squirrel Girl in the MCU. In a way, this trope comes into play with him and Marvel as well, given how his support comes even after his messy departure from Film/AntMan.
* ChekhovsArmoury
* CreatorThumbprint: Synchronized head turns.
* FreezeFrameBonus: His films demand repeat viewings, if only to catch all the blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent[=/=]MeaningfulBackgroundEvent
* GenreBusting
* Gorn: Film/ShaunOfTheDead, Film/HotFuzz and Don't have this. Film/ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld avoids it altogether giving into the style of the comic book. Film/TheWorldsEnd has what you could call gorn in the form of blue robot blood which is "more like ink" - there isn't much actual human blood in the film.
* HeterosexualLifePartners:
** With Creator/SimonPegg, Creator/QuentinTarantino and Cinematographer Bill Pope.
** Creator/SimonPegg didn't just act in his films with Wright, he also co-wrote all three films in BloodAndIceCreamTrilogy.
** In the Making of Scott Pilgrim, he says that "Bill Pope is one of my favourite people ever. Bill, if you're watching this, I love you." And at the end of his and Bill's Scott Pilgrim DVD commentary, he says "And now Bill and I are gonna make out." with some kissing sounds.
* LogoJoke: The Creator/Universal sequence in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Not the regular one.
* MickeyMousing: There's always at least one scene in his movies where everything is timed to the music. Baby Driver takes this UpToEleven and does it for most of the movie.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: Loves treating simple tasks like filing paperwork with the same amount of fast-paced cinematic ecstasy as he would a car chase.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Is in his forties; you couldn't tell by that (relatively recent) picture up there, could you?
** When him and Creator/AnnaKendrick were out together they looked like a pair of college kids, and the shyness about Adorkable simply holding hands did not help.
* SignatureStyle: Creative, stylized, GenreBusting films with at least a bit of satire and clever editing. Main characters are likable whether their NiceGuy's or they are JerkWithAHeartOfGold. He homages clips from films into his own. He also takes old fashioned cliches into something overblown and fresh. Main action is not super realistic but creates a awesome movie experience. Also at least one MickeyMousing scene where the action ties into the rhythem of the soundtrack, especially in Baby Driver
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism: Its pretty clear his movies lean a little more towards the idealistic end.
