Edward James Begley Sr. (March 25, 1901 – April 28, 1970) was an American actor, best known for his performances in the films 12 Angry Men (1957); Sweet Bird Of Youth (1962), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; and Hang 'Em High (1968).
Prior to his acting career Begley served in the U.S. Navy during World War I, from 1918 to 1922.
He was married to Amanda Huff, Dorothy Reeves, and Helen Jordan and he had three children, including Ed Begley Jr..
Begley died in 1970 at the age of 69 following a heart attack.
