Derek Yee Tung-Sing (尔冬升; 爾冬陞; born 28 December 1957 in Hong Kong) is a producer, director, actor and alumni of Hong Kong's prestigious Shaw Brothers studios. He is best known as the half-brother (they have the same mother) of David Chiang (which he co-starred in several movies), although he became a star in his own right after winning the Best Actor Award for Death Duel, in which the then 20-year-old Derek made his debut as lead character.
Born in a family focused on film-making, with over 20 of his siblings and relatives being actors, producers and directors, initially Derek wanted to further his studies overseas at 17 years of age. But inspired by his half-brother, David Chiang (then a leading man of Shaw Brothers), Derek instead decide to follow the traditional family business, as per the norm and land his first acting role at age 19. After Death Duel, Derek will then star in a wide range of movies alongside his half-brother and his half-brother's best friend, Ti Lung.
In 1986, Derek released his directorial debut, The Lunatics, starring Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. However, he didn't receive recognition as a director until 2004's One Night In Mongkok, a movie that marks a career-turning-point inspiring him to stay behind the camera while making movies instead. By 2017, Derek Yee as a director is elected as chairman of Hong Kong Film Awards Association.
