William Dennis Weaver (June 4, 1924 - February 24, 2006) was an American actor, best known for his TV roles as Chester B. Goode, aka "Proudfoot" in the long running CBS western Gunsmoke, and Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud in the NBC detective series McCloud. He also appeared in Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, and was the lead in Steven Spielberg's first major film Duel. For three years he was the president of the Screen Actors Guild.
