- "How famous was I? When I was a somebody, Jackie Chan was a nobody."
Angela Mao Ying (born Mao Fuching 茅復靜; September 20th, 1950) is a Taiwanese actress and martial artist, and one of Taiwan's most prominent icons of early kung fu cinema, with a variety of nicknames bestowed upon her by her fans including "Lady Whirlwind", "Lady Kung Fu" and "Deadly China Doll".
A trained performer of ballet, dance and Peking Opera since a child, Angela Mao started her career at age 17 in the film Angry River, playing a naïve young kung-fu student. Her short role in Enter the Dragon as the onscreen sister of Bruce Lee, despite having really limited screentime, would allow more of her films to be released into western markets, where she was considered the Distaff Counterpart to Bruce Lee during the 70s.
She retired from the film industry in 1993 after moving to New York, focusing on a new career as a restauranteur and owner of three restaurants instead. Including the Taiwanese-themed Nan Bei Ho restaurant in Queens (which she co-owns with her son who acts as her translator).
