Issue #1 Raiders of the Abyss
The age of Leviathan's absolute rule is at an end.
Prepare for the coming of the goddess, Morte Mamme, imprisoned for centuries, now freed as mankind's final salvation against the hordes of hell. She will lead the seven, as the prophecies have foretold, as her Harrowers—-into the depths of hell; as warriors, rebels, anarchists and heroes.
— Promo from Spinoff source issue #17 Clive Barker's Hellraiser

The Harrowers was a Spinoff series from Clive Barker's Hellraiser, published by Epic Comics in 6 issues from 1993 to 1994. Clive Barker, who inspired the Hellraiser franchise, was a contributing writer.

Hellraiser's Cenobites are ruled by Leviathan, "Lord of the Labyrinth". The Leviathan is a Dimension Lord who rules over the hellish Cenobite dimension named the Labyrinth. Leviathan is obsessed with law and order, and views the human realm of flesh as chaotic and wrong. The Cenobites are soldiers in Leviathan's war against chaos and flesh. The Labyrinth which it presides over represents the maze of the mind.

The Leviathan has an opposing deity, a sister goddess named Morte Mamme, who had been imprisoned for ages. There is a Balance Between Good and Evil between Leviathan and Morte Mamme, who acts like a good The Anti-God to the Leviathan's evil. Morte Mamme provides a Hope Spot for the Hellraiser franchise. She'll definitely free and help people even if you're not sure she'll win a war against Leviathan.

The Harrowing series tells the story of how Morte Mamme was released from prison, and how she recruited 6 mortals to be her champions on Earth. Morte Mamme gives each of the 7 mortals powers and a special weapon. For instance, one mortal champion Vera Wyshak has a magic boomerang, but another gift is that her body fluids (spit, blood) burn the Cenobites like acid. The Harrower's are Morte Mamme's emissaries. Most stories in The Harrowers series are how the 7 mortal champions free humans from the Cenobites. But the full story of The Harrowing begins during another comic series, issue #17 of Clive Barker's Hellraiser.

Tropes:

  • Hereditary Curse: In the "Raiders of the Abyss" series, the Johnsons were a family who was cursed by the cenobites from the Hellraiser franchise. In 1620, the Johnson patriarch tried to save his son by cheating the cenobites and failed. Since then every Johnson descendant is claimed by the cenobites when they turn age 25, where they are tortured with bee stings for eternity. Eventually, one of the harrowers, Vera Wyshak, rescues the Johnson clan from their cenobite hell in a story named "Death where is thy sting".
