'''Species:''' Spirit Being\\
'''Main Power:''' Healing]

-->''Now I understand what kind of person you are; it's in my guidebook! Rather than be scared or surprised, you yell a lot and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.''

->Voiced by: Sanae Miyuki (JP), Creator/CynthiaCranz (EN)

Chief ferry girl across the River Styx, Botan is the perky shinigami sent to retrieve Yusuke's soul after his unexpected death. She initially serves as his guide back to life and becomes his assistant upon his appointment as Spirit Detective.
* ActionGirl: Specifically in the Four Saint Beasts storyline, where she easily fends off possessed people with a baseball bat and then attempts to save Keiko.
* CatchPhrase: "Bingo!"
* CatSmile: Would often make this face... in every occasion too.
* CoolBigSis: To the team as a whole.
* DontFearTheReaper: Both in apperance (cute and perky) and in role (guide to the after life)
* GenkiGirl: Her liveliness and general energy is one reason why Yusuke didn't think she was a grim reaper.
* TheGrimReaper: A pleasant Japanese subversion. Yusuke was expecting the straight version (black robe, sycthe, stoic personality etc.) and that's why he was so surprised to a cute and cheerful girl in a pink kimono.
* HealingHands: Has this as a limited ability, and uses it on [[spoiler: Mitarai]] at some point.
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: She fits the personality type (minus crazy impluses) but her relationship with Yusuke was always platonic.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: In the English dub, she has a slight English accent which diminishes over the course of the series...then pops back up in random intervals.
* {{Shinigami}}: A Shinigami with character details (such as the oar she rides on and her blue hair) referencing the Japanese Buddhist myth of the Sanzu River, analogous to the Western River Styx. Her primary function is as a psychopomp, although that appears less and less as the series focuses more on Yusuke's battles with demons. The English dub has her call herself the Grim Reaper and Guardian of the River Styx instead.
* TeamMom: Tends to mother Team Urameshi around. Then again, one of its members is [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Yusuke]] of all people.
* ThemeNaming: Ferry girls have names based on flowers of which in Botan's case is based on peony.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Or baby blue hair.

[[WMG: Keiko Yukimura]]
'''Species:''' Human\\
'''Main Power:''' One hell of a slap!]

-->''Yusuke, you perv! People like you should be strung up in the street! Dumb boy! Hasn't grown up a bit since he was 4 years old!''

->Voiced by: Creator/YuriAmano (JP), Creator/LauraBailey (EN)

ClassRepresentative of Sariyashki High and Yusuke's childhood friend, Keiko is his LoveInterest throughout the series.
* ActionSurvivor: Has [[{{Muggles}} no supernatural powers]] to defend herself from demonic and powerful forces. She gets by by being {{plucky|Girl}} and resourceful, shown especially when she and Botan are up against zombies controlled by insects.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Her and Yusuke. [[SubvertedTrope Justi]][[JustifiedTrope fied]] in that while the rest of the school thinks he's some kind of mob boss she knows he's not as bad as he seems because they grew up together, therefore she ''does'' know his HiddenHeartOfGold very well.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Especially when Yusuke touches her inappropriately. Yusuke says it hurts more than Kwuabara's punches.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Her and Yusuke.
* BrainyBrunette: The invesigator from spirit world says "Her marks are next to perfect."
%%* BrownEyes
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Yusuke.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: Played for laughs. Yusuke gives her one right before going to the Spirit World to meet [[spoiler: Raizen]], she's baffled by it... and then Mr. Yukimura laughs cheerfully and says "he did that every time he gave you grief when you were kids, remember?"
%%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* DistressedDamsel: Not her fault, as it's a consequence of having no magic or spiritual powers.
%%* GirlNextDoor
* HeroicBSOD: Has a pretty big one when Yusuke gets the tar beaten out of him by Younger Toguro.
* IWishedYouWereDead: After being irritated by Yusuke yet again, she furiously snaps "Why don't you just ''die''?!" Shortly after, Yusuke performs his HeroicSacrifice to save a kid, and Keiko's resultant breakdown is part of what convinces him to work his way back.
* MoralityPet: To Yusuke. Seeing him caring for, and being bossed around by, her shows he's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
* {{Muggle}}: Keiko and Atsuko are the only characters listed here without any kind of supernatural powers.
* OfficialCouple: With Yusuke since his revival more or less. Cemented at the end.
* PluckyGirl: Hiei's Shadow Sword, insect-controlled humans, the Dark Tournament...she's been able to handle it all pretty nicely. Borders on BadAssNormal sometimes (the girl's willing to ''douse herself with water and go through fire'' to rescue Yusuke's body!)
* {{Shorttank}}: Even if she ''is'' fond of wearing dresses.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Television closed captions for the English dub spell her name as "Kayko".
* TraumaticHaircut: Averted. Getting parts of her hair singed off after rescuing Yusuke from a fire leads to no angst on her part.
* {{Tsundere}}: Often tsun-tsun towards Yusuke (particularly when he's praising her body), although it's clear she does worry about him. The brief dere-dere momments are when he gets out of a particularly dangerous situation. She's a ''little'' harsher in the manga.

[[WMG: Koenma]]
'''Species:''' Spirit Being\\
'''Main Power:''' Shapeshifting / Ma Fū Kan]

-->''Actually, I'm proud to say that in addition to knowing the greatest secrets of the universe, I am also quite potty-trained.''

->Voiced by: Creator/MayumiTanaka (JP), Sean Michael Teague (EN)

Chief administrator of the Spirit World and son of King Yama, Koenma resurrects Yusuke and becomes his employer.
* BadBoss: Played for laughs as he treats the narrator like dirt.
* BerserkButton: Being laughed off for resembling a toddler.
* BigGood: He is Yusuke's boss and the administrator of the Spirit World.
* {{Bishonen}}: In his adult form.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler: His pacifier is a device that creates a barrier strong enough to hold S-Class demons.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: The Chapter Black Saga forces him out of the sidelines, and into the front field for the first time.
* CowardlyLion: Him being a bit of a coward is often played for laughs, even in serious situations. But in the Sensui arc, [[MyGreatestFailure he was willing to die to resolve an issue he had a personal stake in.]]
* CrossdressingVoices: Voiced by Mrs. Mayumi Tanaka in the original Japanese. Is also often voiced by female actresses in the dubs. In the Latin American dub, Child!Koenma was voiced by a woman; older!Koenma, by a man, and he's also voiced by a man in the English dub, much to Sean Michael Teague's vindication. He talks on the commentary track about how his voice is so high that he's constantly being mistaken for a woman at drive-throughs, so getting a job ''because'' he has a higher-pitched voice was great.
* DeadpanSnarker: In his older form.
* FailureKnight: [[spoiler: Is extremely guilt-ridden from his involvement and appointment of Sensui. Enough for him to [[LovableCoward face him personally]], and betray his own father.]]
* [[SheIsAllGrownUp He Is All Grown Up]] / OlderAlterEgo: Has a ''very'' bishounen adult form.
* ImmortalImmaturity: More in the anime than the manga, and usually when he's in his baby form.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's snide, condescending and rude, and he generally presents himself as a childish blowhard and LovableCoward, but from the start Koenma had Yusuke's interests in mind (even if he didn't ''always'' think he would survive) and helped where he can, and he has just as many moments where he shows he actually does care as he does being a brat. He even [[CowardlyLion put his life on the line when the chips are down once or twice]].
* KingOfAllCosmos: More like prince, but still he's a toddler.
* MrExposition: Particularly in the anime, where he has a video screen that lets him see everything and a clueless assistant who needs things spelled out to him.
* NonActionGuy: The Koenmatron jetpack is his solution to fighting.
* OralFixation: His pacifier. Even as his [[OlderAlterEgo Older and]] SexierAlterEgo, he keeps the pacifier.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: [[spoiler: Behind the scenes, during the Demon World Unification Tournament, Koenma impeached and overthrew his father for the crimes of manipulating Demons to cause crimes in Human World for centuries.]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Is exactly 700 years old, and appears to be a toddler. He can transform into a bishonen teen form for a few minutes at a time... but doesn't remove his pacifier when he does so. Stays in teenage form continuously later in the series when it gets more serious. Eventually the pacifier is [[ChekhovsGun revealed to be a device to store energy]]. He keeps the the pacifier in his mouth even after using up its stored energy, presumably because that's how he recharges it.
* SexierAlterEgo: Koenma (usually in the form of an infant with a pacifier) is able to take on an older, more {{bishounen}} appearance.
* ShoutOut: He is disguised as [[spoiler: [[Franchise/SailorMoon Tuxedo Mask]]]] at the Makai Tournament, probably because Togashi and Takeuchi were dating at the time.
* SpoiledBrat / SpoiledSweet: On his bad days, he'll come off as (particularly) insufferable and bossy, but he's still a fairly responsible leader in general.

[[WMG: Genkai]]
'''Species:''' Human Psychic\\
'''Main Power:''' Spirit Wave]

-->''I fight to get what I need, and I kill whoever gets in my way. I always have.''

->Voiced by: Creator/HisakoKyoda (Older) and Music/MegumiHayashibara (Younger) (JP), Creator/LindaYoung (EN)

A legendary human psychic that holds a tournament to choose an apprentice to pass on her power to in her old age. With Yusuke's victory, she becomes his mentor, determined to beat skill into him even if he doesn't want it. Unknown to everyone (though not above suspicion), she's also the fifth masked fighter for Team Urameshi during the Dark Tournament. Has something of an ''interesting'' past with the younger Toguro brother.
* ActionGirl: She is still one of these [[NeverMessWithGranny as a 70+ year-old woman]], and, when she was younger, [[spoiler: she helped Team Toguro with the Dark Tournament, her being the only girl on that team]].
* {{Affectionate Nickname}}s: Yusuke calls her an assortment of names ranging from "old hag" to "Grandma." She, in turn, calls him "dimwit," among other things.
%%* BackFromTheDead
%%* {{Badass}}
* BroughtDownToBadass: The li'l ol' hag still manages to hold her own quite well against Doctor's territory. Prior to that, she also took out [[spoiler:Suzuki]] and [[spoiler:Shishiwakamaru]], two C-class demons, with little effort, as well as became the first character on-screen to actually manage to [[spoiler:injure Younger Toguro]].
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:The ultimate secret of the Spirit Wave is the Spirit Wave Orb, which she has to pass down to her apprentice. This makes him stronger while it makes her roughly 90% weaker]].
* ChekhovsGun: Her gaming skills become very useful against one of Sensui's men who can [[IKnowMortalKombat manifest video games into reality]].
--> ''Genkai'': "What? You think I've been playing Solitaire for the past 50 years?"
%%* CoolOldLady
* DeadpanSnarker: Sarcastic quips are her specialty, though she laces it with bitter cynicism.
* GamerChick: Because she doesn't have much to do when she's not training besides playing some arcade game she owns. Really.
* HealingHands: Though she doesn't use them often.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: As a SinkOrSwimMentor enforcing TrainingFromHell on Yusuke, she can come across as unfeeling. Well it's clear later on that she cares just as much as anybody else, but don't expect her to show it though.
%%* HonestAdvisor
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: With her old friend [[spoiler: Younger Toguro]].
* IWasQuiteALooker: Was [[CuteBruiser VERY cute]] when young. [[spoiler: Her choosing to be old rather than [[DealWithTheDevil become a demon like Toguro]] is what drove him to kill her.]]
* KilledOffForReal: In the manga, she already passed away at the start of the last chapter. She died after Team Yusuke's last mission at the Gates of Judgment hostage situation. Unlike the first time she died at the end of the Dark Tournament, she didn't come back.
* LittleDeadRidingHood: Was killed by Younger Toguro in her usual red attire. She recovered.
* MeaningfulFuneral: In the manga.
* MeaningfulName: Genkai generally means "limit" in Japanese. Has quite a few meanings in context of the show, huh? It's a homonym too; her name is written with the kanji for "illusion" and "sea"- "sea of illusion", which is also meaningful as she's an OldMaster with a lot of secrets.
* {{Miniature Senior Citizen|s}}: Although she is seen in flashbacks to have always been that height.
* NeverMessWithGranny: As someone who is a former champion of the Dark Tournament, her fighting skill should be without question. That doesn't stop glory-seeking demons from trying to fight her...
* NotSoStoic: Is harsh, disparaging, and domineering to Yusuke to a fault, but almost has an HeroicBSOD [[spoiler: when he dies in the Chapter Black saga.]]
** Also, [[spoiler: she yells at Toguro-ototo when he's literally about to go to Hell.]]
** [[spoiler: And when he continues to deny she is the same person that fought alongside him 50 years ago, she is VERY UPSET.]]
* TheObiWan: [[spoiler: Toguro kills her to make Yusuke stronger. She's revived later by Koenma.]]
* OldMaster: The "just wants a break" version, and badass grandma.
* PaperThinDisguise: Doubly subverted. [[spoiler: Her disguise is her usual outfit with a head covering bandage. Underneath is her younger appearance.]]
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She's barely taller then Hiei. In her first episode, she knocks two rude and huge men into a wall just by blinking a wave of energy at them. Be polite to your elders.
* ProgressivelyPrettier: When she first appeared, she was downright toad-like, with yellowish skin and gigantic eyelids. As her role expanded, she started letting her hair down, grew eyebrows (??), and dropped a few obvious wrinkles. She still looks worn down and ragged, but you can tell that she was once very pretty.
* RenownedSelectiveMentor: Holds a tournament to determine her successor. However, she also points out that she doesn't consider morality a factor when selecting a successor, and part of Yusuke's entering is so that Rando will not receive her techniques.
* SelfDeprecation: She's not afraid to make fun of herself in the pursuit of snark.
--> '''Shishiwakamaru''': I'm surprised my sword's sound alone didn't kill you, you withered old hag.\\
'''Genkai''': Yes, silly me, I must have forgotten to turn my hearing aid on. When you get to be a washed-up old lady like me, the memory is the first to go.
* ShesAManInJapan: In the Filipino dub, she was given the name Jeremiah, which fortunately is unisex, although usually used by males.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: "Use your spirit energy to float above the spike."
%%* SternTeacher: Very stern.
* TrainingFromHell: For Yusuke, herself. [[spoiler: and the Six Fighters, in the Three Kings arc.]] For instance, one of her practicies is "Use your spirit energy to float above the spike. We will hold this for twelve hours."
%%* TricksterMentor: Sometimes, as part of Yusuke's TrainingFromHell.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Yusuke loves and is totally loyal to her. They spend most of their time with him threatening to kill her for all of her TrainingFromHell sessions and with her telling him in excruciating detail every one of his faults.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Pink hair, which grayed over time.

[[WMG: Yukina]]
'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Ice Manipulation]

-->''Go Kuwabara! You can do it!''

->Voiced by: Creator/YuriShiratori (JP), Jessica Dismuke (EN)

Hiei's twin sister, a fact lost only on Kuwabara and Yukina herself. An ice demon, and the object of Kuwabara's affections. She was kidnapped and kept imprisoned for a time by Tarukane because her tears, which transform into jewels, fetch a high price on the black market.
* BewareOfTheNiceOnes: She once told Hiei her ''real'' reason for searching her brother: [[spoiler: reminding him his promise to kill all the Ice Maidens and lead him where they lived]].
* BodyToJewel: Her tears become valuable jewels, which has people trying to make her cry through [[ColdBloodedTorture incredible cruelty]].
* BreakTheCutie: She experiences this briefly after watching her only two friends, a pair of bluebirds, get murdered in cold blood.
* CutenessProximity: Her very ''appearance'' is enough to turn anyone into a doting big-brother and CoolBigSis who wants to hug her all day long.
* DefiantCaptive: She faces torture with as much dignity as she can unless ''others'' are threatened/tortured/killed in front of her. Which [[FridgeHorror hits you like a sack of bricks]] when you think of how ''long'' the poor girl has been tortured until the point of desensitization.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Portrayed this way in her first appearances. The manga has an off-hand mention of the birds being Reikai messengers, however, and later, one of Hiei's [[WholeEpisodeFlashback Whole Episode Flashbacks]] has her make an interesting statement...which makes her a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]] of the trope, if anything.
* HealingHands: But not TheMedic. Her powers are good, but she doesn't appear often enough for that.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: With Kazuma who is easily twice her size.
* AnIcePerson: She's a lot nicer then Seiryuu at least.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: Of Kuwabara by the end of the series.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: Kuwabara's ''first'' reaction upon seeing her in Koenma's mission video, and just about every ''good'' person in the cast when they meet her for the first time. By the end of the series [[spoiler: Kuwabara's family ''does'' take her home, whether as a little sister or as Kazuma's girlfriend/wife is left uncertain.]]
* TheIngenue: Kind, innocent, gentle, etc.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler:With Kuwabara.]]
* MercyKill: Seems to want this to happen to the Ice Maiden society.
-->'''Yukina:''' "If survival means becoming as cold as ice... then I don't see the point."
%%* NiceGirl
* {{Protectorate}}:

** Also of Hiei. In the second movie, one of the villains admitted having harmed her, and Hiei ''[[NoKillLikeOverkill disintegrated]]'' him. Then there's his CruelMercy to Tarukane...
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Averted. She has deep red eyes yet she's anything BUT evil. [[spoiler: Then again, she's searching her brother to have him commit a genocide...]]
%%* RedStringOfFate: With Kuwabara.
* SeparatedAtBirth: With [[spoiler: Hiei]]. So separated that [[spoiler: he was ''thrown off the Ice Demon's floating city'' few hours after he and Yukina were born, despite their mother's cries and pleas to get him spared.]]
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Her and Kuwabara. And the finale [[spoiler: [[StatusQuoIsGod keeps the status quo]] even though there are some hints that Yukina [[MaybeEverAfter just might reciprocate]].]]
* WomanInWhite: She always shows up dressed in a pure white kimono.
* YamatoNadeshiko: In both appearance (long hair, kimono, moderate height) and personality (dignified, strong willed, polite, loving) and [[spoiler: just might have become Kuwabara's wife at the end.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Sea green in this case.

Yusuke's alcoholic mother, unaware of his Spirit Detective job

* AlcoholicParent: She is almost always shown drunk, and more than once toasted to the point of sleeping in.
%%* AmicableExes: With Yusuke's dad.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: She may not be the most responsible parent, but she genuinely cares for Yusuke.
* DemotedToExtra: She kinda disappears after the anime's Spirit Detective arc. Notably, when Keiko, Botan and Shizuru are discussing the Dark Tournament in the anime, Atsuko is passed out drunk. In the manga, the scene is never shown, but all four show up there together.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: She never appears to wear any in the anime. In the manga as she also wears her [[BadassInANiceSuit business attire]] from time to time.
* DragonLady: Not shown in the anime, but she seemed to have ties with Yakuza. She and her group threatened the school's principal to let Yusuke come back to school after he came back to life. She also got Yusuke set up a business of his own through her connections at the end of the manga.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She often draws others in.
%%* {{Muggle}}
* OneOfTheBoys: Her pals outside of Yusuke's circle in the manga are men.
* ParentsAsPeople: While she does clearly love her son, she is just as clearly unprepared for motherhood.

* TeenPregnancy: She had Yusuke when she was 15.

'''Species:''' Human\\

Kuwabara's DeadpanSnarker sister, even more spiritually aware than him.
* ActionSurvivor: The girl isn't a fighter, but manages to survive this very action-packed story. That's pretty badass in itself.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Her and [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Sakyo]] in the anime. Though she's GenreSavvy enough to not harbor ''any'' illusions about him turning to the side of good, she ''does'' listen to his really creepy backstory and show him far more compassion than he deserves. %%* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
%%* DeadpanSnarker
* EducationMama: In the final arc, puts pressure on Kuwabara to study, which results in him getting into a good high school, albeit barely.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She does care about her brother, but you're not gonna find her admitting or showing that any time soon.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Has a high spiritual awareness like her brother.
* PsychicPowers: Is much more powerfully clairvoyant and can actually see ghosts.
* SmokingIsCool: She even puts her cigarette out on an apparition's tongue to shut him up.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler: Sakyo's lighter]].

'''Species:''' Spirit Being\\
'''Main Power:''' ???]

->Voiced by: Creator/YoshikoKamei (JP), Creator/EliseBaughman (EN)

A shinigami like Botan whose primary duty in Spirit World seems to be doing research for Koenma.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: As can be seen [[http://yuyuhakusho.wikia.com/wiki/Ayame here]].
* DemotedToExtra: She is one of Koenma's chief assistants in the manga. In the anime, her only appearance was in Episode 66 to provide a summary of [[spoiler: Younger Toguro's]] life for him to decide on [[spoiler: his]] fate in the afterlife.
* KimonoIsTraditional: She always shows up in her black kimono, and unlike Botan she never changes into anything else.
* LoveInterest: In the manga, Koenma is shown to have an infatuation for her. Whether she has any feelings for him in return is ambiguous.
* ThemeNaming: As with her fellow Ferry girls, her name is based on that of a flower. In Ayame's case, hers is iris.
* TheWatson: She is the one who primarily serves as this in the Manga, but gets replaced as this by Ogre in the anime.

'''Species:''' Spirit Beast\\
'''Main Power:''' Psychic link with Yusuke / Flight]

->Voiced by: Creator/YuriShiratori (JP), Creator/JustinCook (EN)

A Yusuke's Spirit Beast who hatched from the egg given to him by Koenma.
* {{Bond Creature|s}}: Yusuke received an egg that would hatch a spirit beast. If he's good it will be this. If he isn't, the beast will eat his soul. The egg would have been the latter but he sacrificed it to save Keiko. Thus because of this, it ends up hatching a good spirit beast, Puu. The nature of the creature produced was supposed to be determined by the type of energy Yuusuke gave off. If bad, he'd get eaten and the filing problem he represented would be over; if good, he'd earned resurrection. But then scheduling issues caused Koenma to ditch that plan and just resurrect him, and the egg presumably hung around in spiritual form being ignored until ready to hatch. Puu originally resembles a blue Furby with huge floppy ears, but evolves into a sort of phoenix thing [[spoiler: after Yuusuke is resurrected again as a Mazoku.]]
* CessationOfExistence: What it could have done to Yusuke had it hatched earlier.
* ChekhovsGun: The egg Yusuke throws into the fire to save Keiko early in the series is Puu! It gets lampshaded when Koenma has to remind Yusuke about the egg during the Dark Tournament arc, as he'd completely forgotten about it after he came back to life.
* EmpathyPet: Whatever Yusuke is feeling, Puu will also feel and vice versa.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: During the final match against Toguro Yusuke's spirit energy takes the form of a giant bird and flies around the stadium before it settles back into him, foreshadowing the form Puu (who is a representation of Yusuke's spirit) will eventually take. (Puu also settles down around Yusuke right after taking that form, just like the energy did.)
* HeadPet: Until he was too large to stay on Yusuke's head.
* ThePhoenix: His true form.
* {{Synchronization}}: With Yusuke by virtue of being his bond creature.

* AscendedExtra: His first appearance was as one of several Ogres trying to get paper work to Koenma during the Genkai Tournament arc in which he provides some small amount of commentary. He made his next appearance during the Maze Castle arc unaccompanied by any other ogres and [[EnsembleDarkhorse the rest is history]].
* ButtMonkey: He gets abused by Koenma even when he doesn't do anything.
* CanonForeigner: Doesn't appear in the manga, where his function is usually served by Botan or Ayame.
* NarratorAllAlong: It is discovered in the last episodes, although hinted at shortly before, that he was the narrator of the show- since it is revealed that the show itself is the records of the protagonists' adventures that Koenma kept (hence the title, which, while using the original Japanese name, is nonetheless translated by Creator/FUNimation as "Ghost Files").
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname / NoNameGiven: The dub credits him as "Blue Ogre" up until Chapter Black, and Koenma addresses him as "Ogre." The Japanese version reveals his name during or near the end of the Dark Tournament, and Koenma just calls him "[[HeyYou you]]" before that.
%%* OnlySaneMan: ''Painfully'' obvious...

His signature move is to spin his forearm at high speed, creating a tornado around it, making his punches more powerful, even causing damage when he misses. He enjoys his battles, especially when he has a worthy opponent. He states that when he gets excited about a fight his ears twitch. During the fight for control of the Demon World, Jin is one of the demons that Kurama trains to fight for Yomi, though they disband to fight individually in the Demon World tournament.
* {{Badass}}: The strongest of Team Masho to the point Yusuke had to expend all of his spirit energy to beat him.
* BlowYouAway: his powers involve the use of wind to the point he can even glide seamlessly and much of his strategem is diving down at the enemy like a hawk snatching his prey.
* BloodKnight: Jin loves to fight just as much as Yusuke.
* CuteLittleFangs: See [[http://quizilla.teennick.com/user_images/S/SH/SHU/shuichisgirlfriend/1165021852_8screencap.jpg here]]
* FriendlyEnemy: ''Very!'' He and Yusuke get along remarkably well.
* FunPersonified: Yusuke can't keep his angry mood for half a minute when holding a conversation with Jin - which is just what Jin wanted: he hates going into battle with grudges.
* {{Keet}}: This is not helped by the fact that he has the same [[Creator/KappeiYamaguchi Japanese voice actor as Ryuichi Sakuma]].
* {{Oireland}}: in the English dub, speaks with a nearly impenetrable Irish accent for some reason.
* SpiritedCompetitor: A memorable one, because he also lacks the BloodKnight tendencies of some of the other characters Yusuke meets. He encourages Yusuke to focus on the thrill of fighting someone as powerful as he is, clean and fair - and he's noticeably even more disgusted by the unfair attempts to rig the fight than Touya was, losing interest in the battle entirely until seeing Yusuke in action.
--> ''Yusuke:'' "Here we go, Jin! I can't say my ears are pointing up, but I'm looking forward to this challenge!"
--> ''Jin:'' "That's the spirit! Now let's have some fun!"
* WorthyOpponent: Views Yusuke as one.

'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Drunken Fist]

-->''Right! Before we get this thing started I just want to say I'm a great guy and the only thing I suck at is Rock, Paper, Scissors!''

->Voiced by: Creator/NorioWakamoto (JP), Creator/KentWilliams (EN)

Chu is the strongest fighter and leader of team Jolly Devil Six, but ends up as the team alternate after losing at Jan-ken-pon. Chu specializes in the "Drunken Fist", which fuses the alcohol he drinks with his aura. During the fight for control of the Makai, Chu is one of the demons that Kurama trains to fight for Yomi, though they eventually all disband to fight individually in the Makai tournament. At the end of the manga, he begins training with, and falls for, Natsume, the female demon who defeated him in the Makai tournament.
* TheAce: To his team.
* AddictionPowered: The drunker he gets, the stronger he becomes.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Zig-zagged, it seemed Zeru, the proxy leader was the real threat, however the only reason Chu wasn't in the roster initially is that he lost at RockPaperScissors. He proves his strength soon enough.
* BloodKnight: When Yusuke tells him he wants to see if he has more than his drunken fist, he gets very interested
* BoisterousBruiser: He's by far the tallest guy Yusuke hangs out with, he [[TheAlcoholic drinks like a fish]] and only becomes that much stronger when he does it. Helped by [[Creator/NorioWakamoto who voiced him as well]].
* CasanovaWannabe: Shown in his EstablishingCharacterMoment with Koto (the cat commentator). He mellows out a bit later on, mainly directing the unwanted affections toward his IceQueen love interest.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He shows up tripping over everything, acting dumbly and lazily, and looking like crap. Boy, does he ever turn out to be ''total badass''. It's pointed out soon afterward that he's only the "alternate" because he lost in rock paper scissors.
* DrunkenMaster: Became more dangerous after taking a swig of Ogre Killer. Taken to whole new levels when his most powerful attack actually involves mixing his energy with alcohol to make an energy ball powerful enough that two shots of Yusuke's Spirit Gun couldn't equal it. The first shot weakened the attack and the second shot burst through it, punching a hole in the middle, but not stopping it. Even better, he has a special kind of alcohol that... well... induces vomiting. Once he's emptied his stomach, he gets drunk even faster, which summons more of his demonic energy for him to use. (Tequila?)
* FriendlyEnemy: Right up there with Jin as one the friendlier opponents Yusuke faced though this was probably due to their mutual BloodKnight tendencies in the beginning. During the Three Kings saga later on however, he and Jin did share hugs and laughs with the latter upon being reunited.
* HeelFaceTurn: Though let's be fair, it's not like he was '''that''' evil to start with.
* LargeHam: What did you expect of Creator/NorioWakamoto? And surprisingly enough, Kent Williams manages to up the ante with a hammy Australian accent!
* LoveAtFirstPunch: With [[IceQueen Natsume]].
* WildCard: He appears without any foreshadowing, and gives Yusuke who had [[TookALevelInBadass taken training]] what was intended to be a CurbStompBattle and change it into an equal fight. Even their sponsor lampshades it.
* WorthyOpponent: Views Yusuke as one.

'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Serpent Yo-Yos]

-->''I know a fun new game. I'll throw my yo-yos and you try to stay alive.''

->Voiced by: Yoshiko Kondo (JP), Kimberly Grant (EN)

Rinku is a young demon who uses yo-yos to attack. Rinku is childish and playful, and often annoys those around him. He controls his yo-yos by channeling his aura through the strings. During the fight for control of the Makai, Rinku is one of the demons that Kurama trains to fight for Yomi, though they eventually all disband to fight individually in the Makai tournament. At the end of the manga, he becomes stricken with Sasuga, a female demon who defeated him in the Makai Tournament, and it is hinted that they are in a relationship together.
* CreepyChild: Very creepy, at first. It faded away with time. After befriending Team Urameshi, he stopped the psychotic grins.
* EnfanteTerrible: He started off as a sadistic opponent who enjoyed every bit of the CurbStompBattle he was giving Kuwabara.
* KillerYoYo: Rinku can control four yoyos in each hand and each one attacks independently of the other and obey his will. After his TrainingFromHell, he can use eight yoyos.
* LikesOlderWomen: Though its hard to tell his age, he did have a crush on a taller and teenage looking demon.

'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Shapeshifting / Banshee Shriek]

-->''Well, I think the end of the world would have to make a bit of noise.''

->Voiced by: Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa (JP), Creator/ChristopherBevins (EN)

Shishiwakamaru is a tiny imp demon who can transform into a full human appearance. He is a swordsman who seeks to make himself famous. Suzuki gives him the Sword of Trials, a sword hilt that changes into whatever weapon suits the wielder. For Shishi it becomes the Banshee Shriek, a sword which channels the souls of the dead and materializes them to devour his opponent. During the fight for control of the Makai, Shishi is one of the demons that Kurama trains to fight for Yomi, though they eventually all disband to fight individually in the Makai tournament.
* AffectionateNickname: Occasionally called "Shishi" or "Shishiwaka" for short. Suzuka tends to use it a lot in the final arc, particularly when Shishiwakamaru's life is briefly in danger during the tournament preliminaries. His fangirls call him "Waka-sama."
* ApatheticCitizens: Is the only one of Kurama's Six Fighters to not express much passion in the Yusuke vs. Yomi debate, instead marking his vote as "undecided". Suzuki is quick to scratch out his vote and change it to "Yusuke".
* BigBadWannabe: For a minute there, it really looked like he'd be the next tough opponent. ...''He wasn't.''
* BreakTheHaughty: On the receiving end of this from Genkai.
* HeelFaceTurn: Once retconned into surviving his battle with Genkai.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He sort of acts like a celebrity and is obsessed with fame.
* MakeMeWannaShout: His sound's wailing can steal the souls of weaker beings who hear the sound and his attacks are based around sound in general.
* MrFanservice: Very much both in-universe fangirls and out.
* {{Retcon}}: Shishiwakamaru was clearly meant to be dead after Genkai defeats him. In the original Japanese version, Genkai even refers to him as "the late Shishiwakamaru" in her battle with Suzuki. But in the final TournamentArc, he's inexplicably alive and a good guy. One wonders if his real-life fangirls had some sort of influence on this decision.
* {{Samurai}}: Shishiwakamaru, patterned after the legendary hero [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minamoto_no_Yoshitsune Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, aka Ushiwakamaru]], the samurai that was said to originate the term {{Bishonen}}.
* SleepModeSize: Maybe. When he reappears to train with Kurama, he's in an inexplicable bird-like form small enough to fit on Suzuki's shoulder. This form and its relative power/use compared to his bishie form are neither commented on nor explained.
%%* SmugSnake
%%* SplitPersonality: Shishiwakamaru fluxuates between a smug warrior and a bloodthristy berserker.
* TeamPrimaDonna: To both Team Uraotogi and the Six Fighters.
* TookALevelInBadass: With some training from Kuarama, he becomes an S class thus far Genkai who defeated him in a curbstomp battle.
* VillainousBreakdown: Shishiwakamaru goes ''ballistic'' once he realizes Genkai has the upper hand in their fight.

!! Onji [[spoiler:/ Suzuka / Suzuki]]
'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Shape Shifting / Space Manipulation]

-->''Better watch yourself, simple human boy. It's against Spirit World law to say my name without putting a 'beautiful' in front.''

-> Voiced by: Takashi Taniguchi (JP), James Fields (EN)
->[[spoiler: Suzuki voiced by: Creator/KazuyukiSogabe (JP), Jeremy Inman (EN)]]

A crafty and mysterious old man who's the true leader of Team Uraotogi. No one's really sure ''who'' he even is, or what his real game is...
* BoisterousWeakling: [[spoiler: Summed up by Genkai that while he had plenty of tricks that helped him win fights, it was all a smokescreen to hide the fact that he had jack in terms of genuine strength or firepower. She punctuated the fact by beating the crap out of him.]]
* CurbStompBattle: After Shishiwakamaru was efficiently disposed of, ''then'' it looked like this guy would be the next tough customer... [[spoiler:He was even weaker.]]
* EvilerThanThou: Backed down scared rather than face Toguro at a fraction of his full strength (to clarify, Toguro was only powered at 3%).
* TheFightingNarcissist: Such is his vanity that he'd actually ''prefer'' to be made a legend without his face being shown, so those in the future would forever wonder how "the beautiful Suzuki" looked.
%%* HeelFaceTurn
* InsistentTerminology: Suzuka demands to be addressed as "the beautiful," and throws a razor playing card at one of the commentators, decapitating an audience member behind her, when she fails to call him that. Also blasts a portion of the stadium that mocked him for not using this. He still insists on this, even after his HeelFaceTurn.
%%* ItsAllAboutMe
* JokeCharacter: Both [[ButtMonkey figuratively]] and literally, haha. When his true form is revealed, even the ''demon audience'' is embarrassed. Keep in mind, the people who have spent the entire tournament calling for Team Urameshi's heads on a pike are so turned off by [[spoiler: a flamboyant clown demon]] that they openly say that they have no idea what team to hate ''more''.
-->'''Hiei''': This idiot makes Kuwabara seem smart.\\
'''Kurama''': I admit, I'm embarrassed listening to him.
* TookALevelInBadass: Goes from a complete utter joke who had a team that almost completely relied on tools that provided gimmicks rather than genuine battle skills to a mid-tier S Class demon after being trained by Genkai who's able to hold off his own against other demons far more powerful than Toguro.
* TookALevelInKindness: Unlike Shishiwakamaru, who switched to the side of good while maintaining his prima donna attitude, Suzuka seems to be a lot more dedicated to Team Urameshi's cause following his defeat. He starts out by giving Kuwabara and Kurama vital devices to help hone their energy [[EnemyMine for the fight against Team Toguro]], and then is quick to express his support for Yusuke alongside Rinku, Chu, Jin, and Toya when Kurama asks how they feel about Urameshi facing off against Yomi (their boss). He even goes so far as to enthusiastically override Shishiwakamaru's vote of indifference on the matter, forcing the latter to side with Yusuke like the rest of them.
* TheTrickster: He's actually ''very'' powerful and tricky. He just has no Godamn idea how to properly use that power...
* TrueCompanions: Appears to have this feeling with [[spoiler: Shishiwakamaru, showing genuine fright when he thinks the latter was killed after getting swallowed whole in the preliminary round for the final tournament. The sight literally causes him to freeze up onscreen]].
* VillainousHarlequin: [[spoiler: Suzuka, who would be a MonsterClown if he wasn't such a source of comic relief. At least until his HeelFaceTurn.]]
* WeakButSkilled: He has an amazing capacity for spiritual energy--unfortunately, [[DeconstructedTrope he thought this was enough to make him strong.]] Grows out of this after his HeelFaceTurn.
* WritingAroundTrademarks: Suzuki was renamed Suzuka for the dub, so as to not offend the car company. He was changed back to Suzuki in the Blu-Ray re-dub.

!!Yu Kaito
'''Species:''' Human Psychic\\
'''Main Power:''' Taboo]

-->''I drew this by hand. And yes. It IS to scale.''

->Voiced by: Creator/IsseiFutamata (JP), Jakie Cabe (EN)

Yu Kaito is a human who develops superhuman powers as a result of the demon plane hole opened by Sensui. He is a student at Meioh Private Academy where he constantly attempts to outdo Kurama for top grades. He is a master of the written word, having written several books and enjoys word puzzles.

His ability is "Taboo" which allows him to create word games that those within his territory must adhere to or their soul will be extracted from their body. While testing the limits of his power, Kaito breaks his Taboo and has his own soul sucked from his body, prompting Kido and Yanagisawa to consult Genkai to help him and explain their new powers.

In the manga, his last appearance shows him spending his day off mostly playing video games and writing.
* BadassPacifist: ''Literally''. His power completely bans violence of any kind, and the only way to beat him is to outsmart him in word games. Considering just how freaking intelligent the guy is, ''good luck.''
* BadassBookworm: While he's not exactly a fighter, he can keep his wits when 'fighting' others and is very, ''very'' booksmart.
* EvilGloating: Constantly gloats throughout his battle of wits, mockingly challenging Kurama to use words that they're about to lose access to, showing off his wide vocabulary and in general lording over the fact that he can speak normally with no effort despite losing more and more of the alphabet. However, this isn't a sign of foolishness as it usually would be - though Kurama half-heartedly suggests that he could get too excited showing off and make a mistake, they both know that Kaito is far too intelligent to actually mess up. Instead, the gloating itself shows of that he is far too skilled to defeat by his own rules, requiring drastic action.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Seems this way when he first appears, [[spoiler: but proves to be more benevolent.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His taboo power also applies to him. Also, the plants he intended as mockery were essential to his defeat.
* InsufferableGenius: A villainous one at first, which probably came with the whole [[spoiler:"evil act" business]].
* MeaningfulName: Yu means ghost and Kaito means thief. One can only wonder why he steals the souls of up to three of our main characters.
* TheProblemWithPenIsland: If he makes a word taboo, anyone who says the syllables for it in succession loses their soul, regardless of whether it's two words formed together, such as "eac'''h ot'''her" for "hot".
* RealityWarper: His territory bans violence and imposes linguistical taboos which must be cleared.
* TheRival: Academically, to Kurama.
* TheStoic: He is extremely impassive and rarely panics or shows emotion other than mild amusement. Kurama ultimately defeats him by proving he is NotSoStoic and making him laugh at the worst possible moment, but [[spoiler: even afterwards he's the least affected of the human characters by the extraordinary or horrible things around them - in fact, when Kurama is forced to kill Amanuma, unlike everyone else - who are clearly bothered - the only reaction we see from Kaito is the shine from his glasses as he looks on as stony as ever. Only ''Hiei'' remained so cool in the same scene.]]
* TheScottishTrope[=/=]WordsCanBreakMyBones: If you say the Taboo word, you lose your soul.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler: He is the only human who knows Kurama's whereabouts in the last arc.]]
* VillainBall: Though [[spoiler: the "villain" part is largely an act]], he puts a garden of exotic plants in his arena for no reason other than to mock Kurama's abilities - and despite usually being very careful, it seems to slip his mind that Kurama should still have access ''to'' those ablities. Since only ''violence'' isn't allowed in his territory, Kurama then uses those plants repeatedly to non-violently dismantle his plan.

!!Asato Kido
'''Species:''' Human Psychic\\
'''Main Power:''' Shadow]

-->''You've made a lot of friends and enemies, Yusuke, and now we're doing one of them a special favor.''

->Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (JP), Iman Nazemzadeh (EN)

Asato Kido is a human who develops superhuman powers as a result of the demon plane hole opened by Sensui. His ability, "Shadow", allows him to step on someone's shadow and incapacitate them. Along with Yu Kaito and Yanagisawa he seeks the aid of Genkai when his powers appear. It is shown that he also has limited control over his own shadow, using it to spell out his attackers name after he is paralyzed by Doctor. In his final manga appearance, Kido is shown to have been stood up by his date in a cinema while the narration says he is far too forgiving.
* TheBusCameBack: The doctor likely healed him.
* CouldntFindAPen: Uses his Shadow for this to tell Yusuke that Kamiya is the Doctor.
* CurbStompBattle: As Genkai [[DeadpanSnarker so kindly puts it]], if Yusuke's fight with Kaito was for real, he would've been deader than dead. Also receives one from Murota and one from Doctor.
* KnightOfCerebus: Two-ways. His appearance marks the point when the series takes a ''much'' darker and more mature turn, and when Yusuke comes to the realization that brawn and power alone hardly wins every fight.
* NiceGuy: He's actually the nicest member in the group, despite [[FaceOfAThug appearing to be a tough thug]].
* PutOnABus: Spends most of the Chapter Black saga offscreen in the hospital.
* RedemptionDemotion: Beaten up by Murota and paralyzed by Doctor within two episodes. (Not that he was really so bad before...)
* ShadowPin: Could paralyze people by stepping on their shadows, and managed to hand Yusuke an embarassing defeat by doing just that. He can also control his own shadow independently of the rest of his body.

!!Mitsunari Yanagisawa
'''Species:''' Human Psychic\\
'''Main Power:''' Copy]

-->''So you picked my pocket with some greenery? You really are a first class freak!''

->Voiced by: Creator/MitsuakiMadono (JP), Creator/TravisWillingham (EN)

Mitsunari Yanagisawa is a human who develops superhuman powers as a result of the demon plane hole opened by Sensui. His power is "Copy" which allows him to copy the appearance, memories, attributes, abilities, and spirit print of anyone he touches. In his last appearance in the manga, he is too shy to ask an attractive girl out, and it is revealed that ten years later, he marries the girl that tries to cheer him up.

* DareToBeBadass: During Yusuke's fight with Doctor he [[spoiler: manages to burn Doctor with chemicals.]]
* EightiesHair: That's some epic hair, man.
* MasterOfDisguise: As said above, his psychic powers allow him to acquire someone else's looks, memories, skills, etc. after touching him or her.

'''Main Power:''' Tapping]

-->''I don't have any heroic aspirations. I'm much more interested in starting my fighting career.''

-> Voiced by: Nobuaki Fukuda (JP), Creator/SeanSchemmel (ENG)

Murota is a human who develops physic powers as a result of the demon plane hole opened by Sensui. He is recruited by Yusuke, Genkai, Kido and Yana when they arrive in Mushiyori City, using his abilities for Team Urameshi to gather information on the Sensui Seven. His power is Tapping, which allows him to read the minds of anyone in a 30 mile radius. [[spoiler: He's eaten by Gourmet after Kuwabara was captured]]

* BoxingBattler: Is a boxer. His mind reading power gives him a distinct advantage in fights, albeit not nearly enough to beat Yusuke.
* TheChewToy: Punched out by Yusuke, shot in the head by Sniper as intimidation, and infected by the Doctor's disease all within the space of three episodes.
* CombatClairvoyance: Seeks to use his mind reading skills to become a successful professional boxer.
* DareToBeBadass: During Yusuke's fight with Doctor [[spoiler: he reads the Doctor's mind to save Yusuke from his bluff.]]
* TheDragAlong: The heroes basically drag him into helping them kicking and screaming, and by the time they stop he's already too involved to leave.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: He's killed by Gourmet for both his ability and that he knew too much about the plan.
* HeroicBSOD: Has a full-blown ''psychotic breakdown'' after reading [[AxCrazy Sensui's]] [[OmnicidalManiac mind]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Is an obnoxious, lecherous jerk who beats the tar out of one of the heroes (when only a single reaction would do) just to prove that he can and only cares about using his powers to get rich cheating in professional boxing matches. [[NotInThisForYourRevolution He has to be forced to care about saving the world]], and even so it's initially just to protect himself. He does show a bit more heroism during the incident with Doctor, [[spoiler: but he is killed by Gourmet before it can grow into something more.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: He is eaten by Gourmet right after Kuwabara was kidnapped]].
* NotWhatISignedUpFor: Says this after reading Sensui's mind and being shot by Sniper.
* {{Telepathy}}: His power.

Impressing Yusuke in a fight, Hokushin goes back to demon world waiting for Yusuke's arrival so they can get to training. When Yusuke arrives, he begins training and preparing him towards his true destiny.
* BaldOfAwesome: As said below, he's incredibly badass. And has no hair on his head save for his brows.
* {{Badass}}: He is an S-Class demon. His debut even has him beat Yusuke in fight.
* CoolOldGuy: He doesn't exactly look like it, but he's ''several'' centuries old and is a pretty chilly guy when you get to know him.
* TheDragon: Initially to Raizen. Later becomes Yusuke's right-hand man.
* IAmAHumanitarian: During their initial fight Yusuke states he smells humans on Hokushin's breath.
* ManlyTears: Cries these during the Yusuke and Yomi's fight.
* TheMentor: To Yusuke once he arrives in Demon World although Yusuke quickly surpasses him.
* NotSoStoic: When [[spoiler: Yusuke used all of Raizen's treasury to suggest the Makai Tournament, Hokushin freaks out.]]
* TheRival: Initially to Yusuke during the Three Kings Saga but quickly becomes more of a mentor figure to him.
* RubberMan: Hokushin's main power used effectively in his fights.
* TheStoic: Everything he says he says with a straight face on.

* BeamSpam: Used against Yusuke.
* BloodKnight: Yusuke helps bring this out of him, and Yomi admits that for all his planning and status, he's always wanted to fight against [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter Raizen]].
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes through a lot of it, both on and off screen. Before the series even began he went from a hotheaded glory seeker to a calm, calculating ManipulativeBastard to rival Kurama. Then during the Makai Tournament his warrior's spirit is reawakened, and he decides that he now only wants to achieve his goal of unifying the worlds if he can earn it. [[spoiler: when he loses, he goes on a journey with his son to parts unknown, forsaking his empire.]] It's a lot of growth for a character who appears so late in the series!
* TheChessmaster: This guy managed to checkmate '''Youko motherfucking Kurama'''.
%%* CurbStompBattle: Against Shura.
* DisabilitySuperpower: Yomi has grown two extra sets of ears, giving him six in total. His hearing is so acute that he can hear everything within the borders of his country, hear heart rates spike and decrease, as well as accurately guess facial expressions. Oh, and he can fight just fine. You don't need eyes when you're this guy!
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: The reason Yomi was able to win against Yusuke during their CrossCounter was he was able to hear his son's voice encouraging him not to give up. Otherwise it would have been ended in a double KO.
* FriendlyEnemy: He has to scheme and manipulate (because of the demon realm being a CrapsackWorld), but still always places emphasis on civility and negotiations before violence and plotting. After his fight with Yusuke, he pulls a HeelFaceTurn and even seems to respect him as a friend and rival of sorts.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Was once the hotheaded underling of a powerful demon criminal, [[NumberTwoForBrains who kept screwing up his boss' plans with his incompetence and glory seeking.]] [[YouHaveFailedMe After failing him one too many times,]] his boss arranged to have him taken care of, and left him blinded and left for dead. Centuries of manipulation and growth later, he is one of the most powerful demons in existence, an intelligent and calculating force to be reckoned with, and a king in the Demon World that has forced his former boss under his thumb. Kurama's first meetings with him are, understandably, tense.
* HandicappedBadass: Was blinded by an assassin hundreds of years ago [[spoiler:sent by his former partner, Yoko Kurama, as punishment for being a LeeroyJenkins]]. To counteract this, he grew four extra ears to allow him to "hear" his surroundings. Despite his blindness, he manages to grow in power from A to S Class, take over a third of the Makai, curbstomp his cloned son Shura in a fight, and [[spoiler:defeat Yusuke during the hero's final fight in the series—credit to Yusuke, though, his fight drained Yomi's Badass tank, causing him to lose in the next round]].
* HeelFaceTurn: In the end, he comes to some agreement with the heroes and decides to spend more time with his son.
* IHaveYourWife: Uses this on Kurama to get his cooperation. Replace "wife" with "mother" and "stepbrother" and there we go.
* JerkassFacade: To his son, to make him stronger and more self reliant.
* LeeroyJenkins: He used to be one of these, until he lost his eyes. He seems to imply that he has not once, in a full 1000 years ever again relied on impulse.
* ManipulativeBastard: This is pretty much the only character who can outsmart [[spoiler: Kurama]]. And does so flawlessly. [[KarmaHoudini And gets away with it.]]
%%* NobleDemon
* PyrrhicVictory: [[spoiler:He wins against Yusuke in their match, but gets defeated in the next round because he exhausted himself]].
* RedOniBlueOni: [[spoiler: When he was younger, he was the Red Oni to Yoko Kurama's Blue Oni. However, he starting developing Blue Oni traits after he lost his eyesight.]]
* SelfMadeMan: Centuries ago during Kurama's original lifetime, Yomi was a simple impatient and headstrong thief who's recklessness eventually caught up with him ([[spoiler:partly on Kurama's account]]). Now after learning from all his mistakes along with centuries of fighting and experience he's one of the three most powerful and feared demons alive, with all the power, status, and strength he dreamed of back in his old days.
* TrulySingleParent: Shura is both his son ''and'' his clone.
* VisionaryVillain: Wants to unite all of Demon World and then launch an assault on the human world to take it over. What his plan is after that is unknown, though it's hinted that he wants to use the combined strength of both worlds to defeat Spirit World and end their meddling.
* WorthyOpponent: Views Yusuke as one after [[spoiler:Yusuke finds a way past his DeflectorShields]].
* WouldHurtAChild: Yomi has no problem at all kicking the ever loving crap out of his own son in battle. Although given how much of a cocky smartass Shura is, it's kind of hard to feel sorry for him.

Mukuro is one of the three kings of the Demon realm - despised by Yomi as a "chaos preaching tyrant", somewhat liked by Raizen, but more or less feared by ''everyone'' for being shady and unpredictable. Discovering Hiei while preparing for war and, after testing his strength against Shigure, Mukuro placed him as second in command. Mukuro is quick to agree when Yusuke proposes the demon world tournament, battling with Hiei and winning but then ending up up losing to Enki in the final round.
* AuthorityEqualsAssKicking: S+ Class demon.
* {{Badass}}: The STRONGEST female in the entire series. If that's not enough, she's also tied with Yomi and Raizen as the STRONGEST being in the entire franchise and potentially she may be the only person who could come close to being second to Raizen when he was at his peak power in his prime. It's telling that she's one of the few people Hiei respects the most.
* BarefootPoverty: The anime invokes this with some scenes focusing on her running feet as she escapes slavery in her youth.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Lampshaded by Kurama himself. [[spoiler: He made notice that Hiei and her were enjoying maybe a little too much fighting with each other during the tournament.]]
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:Half of her body is horribly scarred and deformed from sexual abuse and self-inflicted acid burns, and one of her legs is prosthetic.]]
* BrokenBird: Her past was sincerely horrific, and it left her mentally '''and''' physically scarred. See BodyHorror for the reason why.
* DarkActionGirl: Less evil than usual examples though.

Though Mukuro is different from most examples, being [[DarkIsNotEvil a not-so evil demon]] (given a choice between [[ImAHumanitarian Yomi]] and Mukuro, Raizen told Yusuke to side with Mukuro) and [[spoiler: being female]]. Besides, said scars [[spoiler:were self-inflicted, as she figured that uglifying herself would be the only way to escape her abusive caretaker (who did abuse her sexually, too).]]
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: With Hiei. She is OneHeadTaller than him.
* WorldsStrongestMan: According to Yomi's data, she is the world's strongest demon, at least now that Raizen is starving. Got defeated by Enki, but at the time she couldn't give it all in such a peaceful contest.

'''Species:''' Demon\\
'''Main Power:''' Raw Demon Energy]

-->''You should be careful what you call a fortunate opportunity. Your luck could run out.''

->Voiced by: Creator/TakayukiSugo (JP), Creator/ChristopherSabat (EN)

Raizen is one of the three kings of the Demon World (in fact, he was considered the strongest of the three) and Yusuke's ancestor. After Sensui is defeated, Raizen summons [[spoiler: his descendant]] Yusuke to the Demon Realm as he is on the brink of death from starvation and requires someone to take his throne.
* AttackAttackAttack: Combined with CombatPragmatist. If his fight with [[spoiler: Sensui while possessing Yusuke's body]] is any indication, Raizen's fighting style consists of a complete and overwhelming offense, leaving his opponents no chance to properly counter-attack or even defend. During what little is shown of his first "fight" with Yusuke, Raizen delivers another merciless assault, leaving no room or Yusuke to even counter.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: S+ Class demon.
* BadassGrandpa: At his peak, Raizen is stronger than everyone in the series! According to Yomi's informants, his offensive power is ''still'' the strongest even when almost dead of starvation, and the only reason Yomi and Mukuro can take on him is that his defensive abilities are sub-par due the starvation.
* BigDamnHeroes: During Chapter Black, Raizen [[spoiler:directly intervenes and temporarily possesses Yusuke's body so that he can defeat Sensui. Yusuke was ''mad pissed off'' about this, but when looking at it in hindsight, if he didn't do that, [[OneManArmy Sensui]] would've likely killed Yusuke. ...Again.]]
* CurbStompBattle: His three shown "fights" in the series consist of beating the piss out of [[spoiler:Sensui]], nearly killing Yusuke without even moving, and once again overwhelming Yusuke despite being [[spoiler:literally minutes away from death]]. Only during the third one did his opponent even have a chance at taking him.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: ''After'' going completely berserk first...
* HandicappedBadass: A couple centuries of constant absolute fasting, and he's ''still'' the best around.
-->'''Eniki''': If Yomi and Mukuro saw Raizen in his prime, they would have peed their pants.''
* GlassCannon: According to Yomi's informants, his offensive power is ludicrously high even by the Three Kings' standards, but the starvation weakened his defensive abilities a bit too much.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Or perhaps a HiddenHeartOfGold. He's a demon who acts uncaring and hard-boiled but it isn't difficult to sympathize with his plight and good intentions underneath (but he doesn't exactly warm up to Yusuke until the end).
* LightningBruiser: Back when he had no problem eating humans, he had enough power to dispatch Yomi and Mukuro simultaneously.
* NoSell: Yosuke fired the Spirit Gun at him. It destroyed the wall behind him but he himself was unharmed.
%%* NobleDemon

* WalkingSpoiler: Due to being Yusuke's ancestor.
* WorldsStrongestMan: At his peak he was the world's strongest demon, ''and still is'': the only reason Yomi and Mukuro can compete with him is that being almost dead by starvation made his defenses subpar.

[[folder:Other Dark Tournament Participants]]

!!''Teams in General''

For details about Team Urameshi and Team Toguro, look under Team Urameshi and Main Villains respectively
* OpposingSportsTeam: Most of the Teams that the heroes go up against are not motivated by evil desires and for the most part participate for the [[BloodKnight joy of fighting]] and the right to get a wish granted by the Dark Tournament Committee. The few genuinely evil people they go against, aside from Toguro's team, are Dr. Ichigaki (read his entry [[Monster/YuYuHakusho here]] for details) and possibly, if not evil then certainly amoral jerkasses, Roto and Bakken.
* TheTeamBenefactor: Each team is sponsored by a member of the Black Book Club with the exception of Team Urameshi which is sponsored by Koenma. However, two teams, those being Team Ichigaki and Team Uraotogi, are self-sponsored.

!!''Team Jolly Devil Six/[[DubNameChange Team Rokuyukai]]''

The first team of Fighters that Team Urameshi fought against in the Dark Tournament.

For tropes about Chu and Rinku specifically, see their entries under the Allies section above
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Roto can form a blade on his hand from one of his fingers.
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: In-universe non-video game example. Roto's only strategy to winning involves threatening to kill an opponent's loved one if they retaliate.
-->'''Roto''': "Why go through all the hard work of becoming a better fighter when all you have to do is to press a button?"
* DirtyCoward: Roto who stoops as low as to try to try to have relatives of opponents killed via a Familiar. Though at least he did make an effort in contrast to Gaou and Imajin who fled the moment Hiei incinerated Zeru.
* DragonInChief: Zeru acted as the leader of the team in Chu's stead due to the latter's habitual drunkenness.
* HostageSituation: Roto tries doing this to Kurama by using his human mother as the hostage during their fight in the Dark Tournament. It doesn't work for long.
* IHaveYourWife: Mother in this case. Kurama is forced to not retaliate against Roto lest Roto order the demon stalking his mother to kill her. Kurama manages to immobilize Roto, steal the trigger to signal the demon, then kill him.
* OffWithHisHead: [[PapaWolf Chu]], angry at Gaou and Imajin's cowardice in abandoning Rinku to fight Team Urameshi all on his own, took off their heads in one swift attack. The anime alters their death at Chu's hands as being beaten to death.
* PlayingWithFire: Zeru's special ability, but it doesn't exactly hold a candle to Hiei's Dragon of the Darkness Flame.
* PunnyName: In addition to being a reference to a song (see Shout out below), Imajin's name is a play on the word "Majin" (meaning either "Demon" or "Evil person" depending on context).
* RagTagBunchOfMisfits: Consisting of among other people a [[ImprobableWeaponUser yo-yo wielding]] [[KidHero Child fighter]], a DrunkenMaster, a [[AmazingTechnicolorPopulation Blue-skinned]] murderer and extortionist, and a blond fire wielder (and also an [[Literature/{{Twilight}} Edward Cullen]] fanboy [[HilariousInHindsight before he even existed]]).
* ScaryBlackMan: Gaou looks like one.
* ShoutOut: Imajin has a strong resemblance to Musician Music/JohnLennon and his name is an allusion to his song "Music/{{Imagine}}".
* VillainsWantMercy: Roto certainly wanted mercy, but Kurama wasn't going to let him go [[KarmaHoudini unpunished]].

!!''Team Spirit Warriors''

A team that Younger Toguro fights and slaughters single handedly.

* AdaptationExpansion: Topaz gets more screen time and characterization in the anime.
* BaldOfAwesome: Topaz. He may also qualify as an [[InvokedTrope invocation]] of BaldBlackLeaderGuy.
* CanonForeigner: Rugby, an alternate for the team, is a character that was created for the anime.
* TheCaptain: Topaz is the leader of the Spirit Warriors.
* IntriguedByHumanity: Rugby states this and more specifically says he has a liking of Human sports, particularly Rugby.
* LargeAndInCharge: Each of Spirit Warriors' members dwarf Younger Toguro, who himself isn't small in stature. Though that [[CurbStompBattle ultimately doesn't help them]] [[KilledOffForReal in the end]]. [[CanonForeigner Rugby]] however averts this being of about the size of an average Human.
* NobleDemon: Topaz objects to Rugby's attempt to kill Yusuke outside of the ring and for that kills him.
* RedShirt: The entire team is this, though Topaz at least gets upgraded to MauveShirt in the anime.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Topaz wears a collar with spikes on it.
* StoutStrength: Dosukoi by default of being a sumo wrestler.
* WeaponOfChoice: Topaz's is [[AnAxeToGrind an ax]], Gorira is armed with a [[DropTheHammer hammer]], Babaki uses a [[ProngsOfPoseidon trident]], and Gagaki wields a [[CarryABigStick mace]]. Dosukoi is the only member who doesn't use a weapon. [[CanonForeigner Anime-only character]] Rugby can create rugby balls.

!!''Team Ichigaki''

The second team of Fighters that Team Urameshi fought against in the Dark Tournament.

* BlindingBangs: Yen (AKA M1).
* BraidsOfAction: Kai (AKA M2), a male example of this trope, wears his hair in a Mandarin Queue.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: What Dr. Ichigaki has done to three humans, via implanting berukis onto them, to use them as test subjects [[DealWithTheDevil in exchange for healing their ill master]] [[ParentalSubstitute Mitamura]] [[spoiler: of which he was responsible for poisoning in the first place to force his students into accepting his deal]].
* TheCameo: Yen, Kai, and Ryo (formerly M1, M2, and M3 respectively) are briefly shown [[spoiler: in the bleachers watching the Final round of the Dark Tournament]].
* {{Cyborg}}: Gatasubal, a [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot cyborg demon]] to be more exact.
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler: Ichigaki]] is strongly implied to have been killed in the anime, but the manga shows that he was still alive and witnessed the fight between Yusuke and Toguro. Inverted in the case of M5 who was killed in the Manga by Hiei and Kurama but is spared in the anime after getting them to the ring.
* EvilRedhead: Yen (M1). Subverted in that he is not inclined to evil but has been [[BrainwashedAndCrazy mentally enslaved]] by Ichigaki.
* HumansAreSpecial: Ichigaki is one of the few Demons to recognize the potential of Human Spirit power rather than belittling Humans as being inferior. However he fails to realize the [[RousseauWasRight potential of emotions]], and firmly believes that VirtueIsWeakness.
* LizardFolk: Minor characters M4 and M5 are reptilian humanoids.
* MadScientist: Dr. Ichigaki. We're not sure what university he got his [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate doctorate]] from, but where ever he went really [[Series/TheBigBangTheory should do a better job of screening those people out]].
* MercyKill: What Yen, Kai, and Ryo, upon being able to temporarily break though the control of their berukis, ask Yusuke to do to end their suffering, which he obliges. [[spoiler: However it is subverted when Genkai intervenes and uses the Spirit Wave technique's Mortality Fatality function to destroy the Berukis without killing the fighters themselves.]]
* MindControlDevice: The function of the Berukis.
* MustMakeAmends: [[spoiler: The three martial artist have stated that they wish to make up for having killed people while under Ichigaki's control. Ryo in particular offered to fight for Team Urameshi as his way to atone for his past actions]].
* OneWingedAngel: Upon M1, M2, and M3's defeat, Ichigaki injects himself with a serum to take out retaliation against Yusuke. Instead, [[ClippedWingAngel the doctor gets his ass handed to him]].
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler: Upon being freed of Ichigaki's control, they return to train with their master and [[ParentalSubstitute adoptive father]] Mitamura. Aside from a cameo of them cheering Team Urameshi in the final round of the Dark Tournament, this is their last appearance in the story]].
* ShoutOut: Kai (M2) was modeled on [[VirtuaFighter Lau Chan]].
* SlasherSmile: Ichigaki shows sadistic glee in seeing others suffer.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: [[spoiler: Inverted in that it is the previously antagonistic Yen, Kai, and Ryo who call themselves out. However Master Mitamura quickly tells them that they shouldn't blame themselves for being [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Mentally Enslaved]] by Ichigaki.]] Though this is certainly played straight against [[HateSink Ichigaki]].
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Ryo (AKA M3) and thus has his Beruki in open sight in contrast to his teammates who wear shirts over theirs.
* WeHaveReserves: He says this about M1, M2, and M3, [[spoiler: considering that his real target is using Yusuke as a subject for his experiments]]. He doesn't care whether they will survive and that even if they were to win the Dark Tournament that he would simply [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness kill them himself anyway]].

!!''Team Masho''

The third team of Fighters that Team Urameshi fought against in the Dark Tournament.

For tropes about Jin and Touya specifically, see their entries under the Allies section above.
* AntiVillain: The Shadow Channelers only wish to compete in the Tournament to, in Touya's words, "step into the light" to make a new home in the Human world. They qualify as [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type IIs]] in that they regard themselves as TrueCompanions. Completely averted in [[HateSink Bakken's]] case, though.
* AvengingTheVillain: Not any of Team Masho's members' objective, but their [[TheTeamBenefactor sponsor]], Butajiri, wants to get back at Tarukane's killers. Subverted in that he didn't give two craps about [[AssholeVictim Tarukane]], but Butajiri is a pompous Plutocrat who is pissed off at the audacity of a bunch of [[WorkingClassHero downtrodden]] Delinquents taking out a fellow CorruptCorporateExecutive and now wanting to "put them in their place". Though Sakyo corrects him that he was the one who ordered Toguro [[KickTheSonOfABitch to kill Tarukane]] [[spoiler: just before Toguro gave him a well deserved death as well]].
* BloodyMurder: Gama's enchanted body paint is made from his own blood.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Risho.
* DishingOutDirt: Risho can create a [[InstantArmor suit of armor]] by coating his body with clay from the ground.
* TheDragon: Jin serves as this for Risho.
* ElementalPowers: Gama's is [[BloodyMurder blood based]], Touya is AnIcePerson, Jin's is [[BlowYouAway wind based]], and Risho's is [[DishingOutDirt Earth based]]. Bakken seems to have no particular elemental power.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Again, Risho. Makes for a pretty creepy look, overall.
* EvilAlbino: Gama, though antagonistic albino would be a better description for him.
* HeelFaceTurn : Touya and Jin do this after the team's defeat.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble : Jin is sanguine-phlegmatic, Risho is choleric, Touya is melancholic.
* HeroicSacrifice: Gama may not exactly fit the definition of heroic, but he nonetheless sought to use his dying breath to place a concealment spell on Kurama to help his team achieve victory.
* HonorBeforeReason: Toyed with. While Touya [[EvenEvilHasStandards keeps to his principles]] demanding that Risho fight honorably in the face of blatant bribery and rigging of the match in their team's favor, the latter subverts this by choosing to be pragmatic and accept the ruling so that they can get closer to their goal of winning a new home in the Human world.
* {{Jerkass}}: Bakken is an unrepentant thug who is willing to [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown beat down people who can't defend themselves]] and happily gloat about it. His personality is so grating that even his own teammates regard him as the TheScrappy in-universe. Thankfully, [[HateSink Bakken]] gets [[CurbStompBattle what he deserves]] from Yusuke.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: Bakken does this to an unconscious Kurama. Once in the ring himself, Yusuke returns the favor and beats on Bakken for a bit after clearly winning.
* LeanAndMean: Both Gama and Risho.
* NobleDemon: A standout example in the Dark Tournament arc. Team Masho are the only team besides the heroes [[VillainousFriendship who seem to care to an extent about each other as a whole]] (as apposed to individual friendships like Chu and Rinku) - [[TheFriendNobodyLikes with the exception of Bakken]]. They are willing to fight and sacrifice themselves for the sake of their comrades, are dedicated to a cause rather than BloodKnight tendencies, [[AffablyEvil are generally respectful and are all in all more honorable than most]] - though Risho ultimately proves himself willing to drop honor like a rock if it means achieving his goals.
* {{Ninja}}: Or the "Shinobi of Spirit World" to be more exact.
* RealMenWearPink: Gama is referred to as being a "Master of Make-up," though he detests the associations that humans have made with his art.
* SmokeOut: Bakken can create a smoke screen with the vapor of his sweat.
* SmugSnake: Risho.
* {{Stripperific}}: Gama and Bakken wear little else than loin clothes and sandals. Justified as their abilities require their skin to be exposed in order to perform their techniques.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: In-universe example. This is the reason Bakken's Wounded gazelle gambit failed miserably.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Bakken attempts to pull this on Yusuke once the latter gets the upper hand. Bakken pleads for mercy claiming that his ribs are broken and that he can't remember about the beating he gave to Kurama minutes earlier, in which he then tries to smash Yusuke's head with some debris. Yusuke never lowered his guard based on how inauthentic his pleas were and decided to "[[PayEvilUntoEvil help remind]]" Bakken what he did to Kurama.
* VillainousValor: After being critically injured, rather than use what little energy he had left to heal himself and save his own life Gama is willing to bleed to death to weaken Kurama, assured that his death will mean the eventual defeat of his enemy. It doesn't, of course, but you have to respect his dedication.

!!''Team Uraotogi''

The fourth team of Fighters that Team Urameshi fought against in the Dark Tournament.

For tropes about Shishiwakamaru and [[InsistentTerminology The Beautiful]]... [[DontExplainTheJoke Onji]], see their entries under the Allies section above.
* AdaptiveAbility: Kuro Momotaro uses Steaming Spheres to gain an immunity to whatever attack was last used against him.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Makintaro's only shown ability was being able to turn his hands into blades.
* TheDragon: While Shishiwakamaru appears to be the team's captain, he is revealed to simply be the [[TheHeavy Frontman]] for [[spoiler: Suzuki]].
* FracturedFairyTale: Its members are based on heroes from Japanese Fairy tales and folklore. Makintaro is based on Kintaro, Kuro Momotaro is based on Momotaro, Ura Urashima is based on Urashima Taro, and Shishiwakamaru is inspired by Oniwakamaru. Onji is the notable exception as he wishes, to paraphrase him, to make his own story. In an interesting coincidence Onji/[[spoiler: Suzuki's]] name in the Funimation English dub, "Suzuka", is similiar to that of the Mythological Suzuka Gongen. In addition, the team's name almost literally translates into English as "Team Fractured Fairy Tales".
* FullBodyDisguise: Two of its members are disguised. Ura Urashima is revealed to be a hairy canine-like humanoid shortly after he is killed by [[spoiler: Shishiwakamaru]] and Onji is actually [[spoiler: [[VillainousHarlequin Suzu]]-ahem! The Beautiful Suzuki]].
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: Makintaro, Kuro Momotaro, and Ura Urashima]]. Subverted in the case of Shishiwakamaru who [[WordOfGod Togashi]] [[WhatCouldHaveBeen intended to have been killed off]] at the conclusion of his battle against [[spoiler: Genkai]], but with the [[PostScriptSeason additional Three Kings saga]] his death was retconed as him being knocked unconscious.
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler: Onji/Suzuki]] is the true leader for Team Uraotogi.
* ManipulativeBastard: Ura Urashima claims that he was forced into villainy on the pain of his mother being killed during his fight against Kurama in order to get him to lower his guard to use his Idunn Box on him.
* MerlinSickness: What Ura Urashima's Idunn Box inflicts on its targets [[spoiler: and unwittingly brought about his defeat and near death when Kurama reverted to Yoko Kurama]].
* RagTagBunchOfMisfits: Who are empowered thanks to the weapons and equipment made for them by Onji.
* {{Reincarnation}}: Four of its members (See Fractured Fairy Tale above) claim to be the reincarnations of famous individuals as Demons.
* {{Telepathy}}: One of Ura Urashima's abilities.

[[folder: Other Characters]]

->Voiced by: Creator/AiOrikasa (JP), Amber Cotton (EN)

The more prominent of the two hostesses of the Dark Tournament. Koto resembles a cat or a fox. At the end of the manga, the two and Ruka, the nurse of the Dark Tournament, become the "Cult Trio" and become widely popular on human television. She also has a crush on Toya.

* CatGirl: Or Fox Girl (its ambiguous as to what animal-type demon she is).
* CombatCommentator: She first provided media coverage for the Dark Tournament.
* CuteMonsterGirl: A cat-girl announcer.
* DubText: The dub gave her a crush on Kurama, or at least on his demon form.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Although she usually comes off as amoral, she does object to the dirty methods used by two of Team Masho's members, expressing particular disgust at the way Bakken beats up on Kurama when the latter was clearly not in a condition to fight. She also goes surprisingly out of her way to save Juri from the Dragon of the Darkness Flame during Hiei and Bui's fight.
%%* LittleBitBeastly
* PluckyGirl: Koto takes her job VERY seriously and continues to commentate even when the arena is falling apart around her.

->Voiced by: Katsuyo Endou (JP), Creator/JamieMarchi (EN)

The second of the two hostesses of the Dark Tournament, introduced in the Semi-finals. Juri resembles an amphibian. At the end of the manga, it's revealed that she has a crush on Suzuki.

* BareYourMidriff: Wears a one-piece outfit with a large section around her belly cut out.
%%* ButtMonkey
* CombatCommentator: She also provided media coverage for the Dark Tournament.
%%* CryCute: Oh, cry very, ''very'' cute.
* CuteMonsterGirl: A dragon-girl referee.
* PunchClockVillain: Doesn't enjoy the job too much (given her [[LovableCoward cowardly]] nature), and prefers to look out for herself when the collateral damage becomes dangerous.

!! Ruka

->Voiced by: Creator/ChiharuSuzuka (JP), Creator/LaurieSteele (EN)

Part of Team Mashōtsukai more or less. She can create barriers and tries to restrain Hiei and Genkai for several matches.

* BreakTheHaughty: Starts out arrogant but as Hiei gathers strength her nerve starts leaving her, then her cords start shreading.
* DefeatByModesty: Started to go this route but sadly Kuwabara won before all of Ruka's cords were destroyed.
* EvilRedhead: Though more like Jerkass Redhead as she was simply a PunchClockVillain overall.
* HelloNurse: About every man's reaction to first seeing her. Even better she first steps out in a nurse uniform.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Or in her case Hoist by her own cords, but narrowly averted. While she was able to able to restrain Hiei and Genkai behind her barrier, it also had an unbeknownst healing effect which Hiei benefitted from. Had [[MoralityPet Yukina]] not shown up at the right time, Ruka's life would have ended almost immediately after.
* {{Irony}}: She isn't a nurse at all, but her barrier ability happens to have healing properties she wasn't aware of.
* MsFanservice: She even becomes a model (in-universe) as part of the "Cult Trio" with Koto and Juri.
* SquishyWizard: While she can create barriers to protect herself or contain others, but if her cords are destroyed she will be left vulnerable to being killed.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Starts out in a nurse uniform, strips it off to just cords around her chest and hips, along with high heels and hat. Apparently they can only work uncovered.

* ActionGirl: Among the old drinking and fighting pals of none other than [[spoiler: Raizen, a Demon King just like Mukuro]]. [[DrunkenMaster Chu]] [[AmazonChaser is completely smitten with her]]!
* HalfIdenticalTwins: She and her brother.
* {{Tsundere}}: After defeating Chu in a fight she turns down his offer for a date because [[AllAmazonsWantHercules she doesn't like weak men.]] In the manga epilogue, it turns out she's frequently sparring with Chu so that he can get stronger, but furious downplays [[BestHerToBedHer her motives]] when her brother asks?

* ActionGirl: Among the old drinking and fighting pals of none other than [[spoiler: Raizen, a Demon King just like Mukuro]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: Implied to be one since [[spoiler: she still resents the Lady Doctor for snatching a place in Raizen's heart.]]
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: As Yusuke could tell the very moment he first met her based on the poignant smell of alcohol on her breath.
* {{Tsundere}}: She treats her husband Enki rather harshly, but then she [[CryCute breaks down crying]] in front of [[spoiler: Raizen's tomb.]]

* BattleCouple: He and his wife Kokou are not just married, but also fighting partners.
* BigFun - NiceGuy: Despite being a demon, he's very jolly and nice, and a good {{foil}} to his TsunDere wife. See also NobleDemon.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Is much larger than Kokou.
* NobleDemon: Wins the tournament and ends up making it the most peaceful place in ages, and yes he is a demon. Might be a subversion though, since he may not even count as a villain.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He's officially the World's Strongest Demon after defeating Mukuro and winning the tournament.

!!Maya Kitajima

-->Voiced by: Creator/YukiMatsuoka (Drama CD's)

Kurama's underclassman who seems to have a crush on him and gets accidentally caught in the middle of his struggles. She only appears in the manga and the Drama CD's.

* AscendedExtra: Her very first appearance was during the Dark Tournament in a cameo in Kurama's flashbacks ([[AdaptedOut not shown in anime]]) of his childhood in the middle of his fight against Ura Urashima. She later appeared in the Two Shot Special as a somewhat more prominent character.
%%* BoyishShortHair
%%* TheCutie
* DamselInDistress: While she does have slight spiritual powers, she cannot fight against demons ans has no martial arts knowledge.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Kurama wipes out her memories of her abduction at the end.
* PsychicPowers: She tells Shuichi Minamino (AKA Kurama) that she possesses spiritual awareness and could tell that he was special. However, [[spoiler: she fails to detect the demon who apprehends her]]. Though this lapse could be justified in that she was distracted due to Kurama and Hiei's fight at the time.
* SempaiKouhai: Wants to have a romantic relationship of this kind with Kurama.

-->Voiced by: ??? (Drama CD's)

The antagonist of the Two-shots Extra Chapter that explain how Kurama and Hiei met for the first time.

* AdaptedOut: He makes no appearance in the anime, though a brief moment showing Kurama's and Hiei's first meeting from this special chapter is depicted in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene.
* CannibalismSuperpower: He can gain power, and possibly specific abilities, from consuming other live organisms. He particularly seeks to eat [[spoiler: Kurama]].
* DevourTheDragon: The "reward" he gave to the demon who captured Maya.
* IHaveYourWife: Or in this case, I have your classmate and an Ice Maiden. Subverted in the latter case as that was merely him taunting Hiei.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: He has six arms in total of which two protrude from his head.
* PosthumousCharacter: He was killed prior to Yusuke's death at the beginning of the story.
* PowerCopying: Says he has this ability with his dying breath. He claims that if he had consumed an [[AnIcePerson Ice Maiden]] he wouldn't have lost.
* SkeletonsInTheCoatCloset: He wears a belt consisting of skulls, of which are presumably those of his victims.
* UnskilledButStrong: He is recognized as being powerful by Kurama, but demonstrates that [[DumbMuscle he is not a good tactician]] which gets him killed.

->Voiced by: Takashi Taniguchi (JP), Pete Webber (EN)

A very powerful and eccentric warrior and combat medic from the Demon World.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Very efficient at work. His fees and charges are ''very''... personalized. [[spoiler: In the case of Hiei, he first demands to listen to his life story and reasons, and then makes him promise that he will ''never'' tell Yukina of their bond.]]
* CombatMedic: Both a badass combatant with his RingsOfDeath and an extremely efficient surgeon [[spoiler: who actually implanted [[MagicalEye the Jaganishi]] in Hiei's forehead.]]
* DeathByAdaptation: He's killed off in the anime, whereas he survives in the original manga.
* DrivenToSuicide: Anime only, since he pretty much throws himself off the huge tree grown in the stage after [[spoiler: Kurama]] defeats him.
* GoOutWithASmile: At least he wasn't that unhappy as he kicked it.
* RingsOfDeath: His WeaponOfChoice.
* WalkingSpoiler: More exactly, what he did in the past completely shaped [[spoiler: Hiei]]'s motivations and storyline.

!!The Lady Doctor

->Voiced by: Creator/MikaDoi (JP), Creator/ColleenClinkenbeard (EN)

A human woman from [[spoiler: Raizen]]'s past. [[spoiler: And Yusuke's ancestress.]]

* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She was a tall and beautiful woman with long dark hair and a no-nosense attitude.
* DeathByChildbirth: The Lady Doctor was impregnated by [[spoiler: Raizen]] in their first and only time, then died when their baby was born.
* DressHitsFloor: When [[spoiler: Raizen]] shows up at her home with the clear intention of eating her, she pulls this on him with her kimono... [[spoiler: but in a subversion, it's to show him how her body had been ravaged by disease and prove him that, should he eat her, he would '''regret''' it. [[SceneryCensor Not that we actually get to see that]].]]
* HotWitch: Some translations of the manga have referred to her as being a [[http://www.pojo.com/yuyu/bios/w.shtml "witch"]], though the "Hot" is not as disputed in-universe at least. Thus when her lover awoke to justice, the Dark Knight Spar-[[Franchise/DevilMayCry Oh, sorry, wrong story]].[[note]]For those unfamiliar with Devil May Cry and [[DontExplainTheJoke possibly don't understand]], Eva (the one from the classic continuity, not to be confused with her [[OurAngelsAreDifferent angelic]] counterpart in VideoGame/DmCDevilMayCry) was a witch who fell in love with the Demon Sparda, [[spoiler: of whom the protagonist is one of two products of this union]], [[CounterpartComparison somewhat like]] the Lady Doctor's relation to the spoiler protected individual.[[/note]]
* InterspeciesRomance: [[spoiler: With the super powerful descendant to show it, too.]]
* TheLostLenore: For [[spoiler: Raizen]]. After their single night of sex, he swore off his demon-womanizing (much to the displeasure of Kokou) and, having learned about her DeathByChildbirth, he decided to never eat any humans until she was reincarnated and he found her again.
* TheMedic: Said to be a skilled healer.
* NoNameGiven: We never learn her name, in fact "Lady Doctor" is her FanNickname.
* PoisonousPerson: She was a "shaman cannibal" who willingly consumed the flesh of people who died of illness so her body would develop antibodies and eventual cures, which doubled self-defense against human-devouring demons. If any demon had a piece of her, they'd die painfully and slowly since her flesh was ripe with disease.
* PosthumousCharacter: As she is a human who lived centuries before the present of Yu Yu Hakusho.
* RegretEatingMe: She told this to [[spoiler: Raizen]]. The reason is resumed in one trope: [[spoiler: PoisonousPerson]]
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Her role in [[spoiler: Raizen]]'s life pretty much ''put the whole story in movement''.
* {{Tsundere}}: [[spoiler: Raizen]] has described her as having a fiery temper and says that [[spoiler: Yusuke]] inherited that [[HotBlooded personality]] [[ByronicHero trait]] from her.
* WalkingSpoiler: Because, as said above, her small role was '''vital''' in the story.

!!''Sei-Sei Shinto (AKA The Armed Church of the True Disciples)''

The last enemies that Team Urameshi fought against in the story.
* AdaptedOut: The [[http://makai666.blogspot.com/2011/12/episode-112.html Sei-Sei Shinto]], which appeared in Chapter 174 (the next to last one) in the manga, doesn't appear in the anime.
* BigBadWannabe: [[spoiler: Ōtake, the former Captain of the Special Defense Forces who was removed by King Enma for failing to kill Yusuke]], is the leader of the Sei-Sei Shinto.
* TheCoup: In this case, the True Disciples goals is to [[spoiler: to restore the Deposed ruler Enma back onto the throne]].
* DeathRay / WaveMotionGun: What they plan on using as their FinalSolution against [[spoiler: Sarayashiki, Japan]] if their demands are not met.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Their opposition to the changes brought about by [[spoiler: the new Spirit World government led by King]] Koenma is strongly reminiscent of {{Right Wing Militia Fanatic}}s that were active during TheNineties. In addition their head grabs closely resemble [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keffiyeh Keffiyehs]] that are worn by people of the Middle East. Their goals are described, via the Creator/VizMedia English translation, as follows: "They believe they are on a Holy mission from god to purify the Human world. The True Disciples follow the most extremist (sic) version of their teachings".
* EvilReactionary: Now that the status quo has been changed [[spoiler: following King Enma's impeachment and removal from the throne]], they seek to restore the previous order at all costs.
* FantasticRacism: Against Demons who they still regard as being AlwaysChaoticEvil even after that was [[DarkIsNotEvil definitively disproven]]. The Sect also has some contempt for Humans in viewing them as being [[HumansAreBastards immoral]] and [[HumansAreMorons undeserving of running their own lives]]. Team Urameshi [[ScrewYouElves would beg to disagree]].
* GasMaskMooks: Most of the Terrorists wear Gas Masks.
* HostageSituation: Of whom notable individuals they are holding at gun point include Koenma and Botan.
* IRejectYourReality: They refuse to accept that [[spoiler: King Enma was responsible for brainwashing and using Demons to [[EngineeredHeroics justify his so-called "protection" of Humans]] ]] and now wish to restore [[EvilReactionary Status Quo Ante]] regarding that revelation as [[FanonDiscontinuity never having happened]].
* KnightTemplar: The Sei-Sei Shinto are a radical Spirit World religious sect that take over the Gates of Judgment in the Spirit World to "[[PureIsNotGood purify]]" the Human world.
* LightIsNotGood: Spirit beings, such as Koenma and Botan, have for most of the series been portrayed as [[LightIsGood allied with the forces of good]] against Demonic threats. In this instance it has been flipped with some of Spirit World's Denizens as the antagonists.
* TheMagicVersusTechnologyWar: In this case, Sei-Sei Shinto's Spirit World {{Magitek}} against Team Urameshi's members' SupernaturalMartialArts. Despite outnumbering the heroes thirty-three to four, the True Disciples were easily beaten. [[spoiler: The Interdimensional laser, on the other hand, remained as one thing Team Urameshi could not over come with brute force]].
* OrderVersusChaos: They are the order to the [[DesignatedVillain perceived]] anarchy of Demons. Though the order that Sei-Sei Shinto wishes to impose would better be described as [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans Tyranny]].
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: Of a more Fantastic variety.
* SuperiorSpecies: What they believe to be the case with Spirit World in regard to its inhabitants' [[WhiteMansBurden "right" to rule over Humans]].
* UndyingLoyalty: For the ultimate villain of the series [[spoiler: King Enma]].
