* CorruptedCharacterCopy: Of Jen Masterson from ''{{WesternAnimation/Sixteen}}''. Most of the first-generation "Total Drama" contestants share a character archetype with someone from "[=6teen=]", the show's predecessor. Courtney fills a similar niche to Jen as the uptight, rule-following, ambitious, and studious member of the cast. But, while Jen can be bossy and a control freak at times, her intentions are almost always good, and she cares about her friends and family more than she cares about winning or always being right. Courtney adopts a controlling attitude toward her team because she believes she knows what's best, no one else, and won't tolerate challenges to her self-imposed authority. And it's not much of a stretch to say she has no real friends in her personal life (according to her bio, Courtney stated that she had plenty of friends, but those so-called friends were never mentioned in the series). Courtney was one the most unpopular contestants with her casemates, even in season one when she was the most polite and helpful. Well, she tried to be civil to her cast mates and has made a few friends; she'll backstab anyone and everyone -- allies, teammates, boyfriends -- if there's even the slightest chance of it getting her what she wants. As a result, she destroyed every friendship and relationship she had in the series, and by the end of the series, she had no friends or a boyfriend left by the end of her run on the series. And since Courtney never won the series, she departed the series with nothing but hatred from her cast mates, former friends, and former boyfriends.

(TDAS)

A haughty, uptight,
and strength fool you, DJ perfectionist overachiever who will do anything for success. As the only contestant with CIT (counselor-in-training) experience, Courtney is a sensitive, gentle, natural leader with many strengths, but her bossy demeanor and soft-hearted MamasBoy who loves animals. He is very timid and gets scared quite easily, but his compassionate personality and superb cooking skills endear him ruthless drive to even the most unpleasant people.win make her a polarizing individual.

* AcademicAlphaBitch: A haughty perfectionist overachiever whose motto is "If you can't come in first, don't come in at all." [[TookALevelInJerkass She gets worse as the series goes on]].
* AcademicAthlete: She is both scholarly and athletic.
* TheAce: As part of being a perfectionist she prides herself in being a straight 'A' student. Her ''Island'' bio claims she's a published author, having written the award-winning book ''Total Triumph for Teens'' and that her bedroom is covered with trophies, ribbons, and plaques; she's apparently never lost anything in her life before ''Total Drama''.
* ActionGirl:
** Especially in ''Action''. Courtney has exceptional athletic abilities and is also capable of lifting amounts of weight much greater than her own.
** Averted in ''Island'' where she generally did poorly in challenges, though she did rip a light post out of the ground and swing it as a weapon pretty easily.
* AesopAmnesia: About how bad an idea it was to try and change Duncan to make him "perfect".
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Duncan until he left her for Gwen. Later on in ''All-Stars'' she gets close to Scott, the former antagonist of ''Revenge of the Island''.
* AlphaBitch: On the Killer Bass, Killer Grips, and Heroic Hamsters. She became the show's main Alpha Bitch in ''Action'' and ''All-Stars'' after Heather's elimination. On Team Amazon, however, she clashes with Heather for the position.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She had a romance with Duncan the first three seasons before flirting with Alejandro and then starting a brief romance with Scott. However, she's had tons of LesYay with Gwen in ''All-Stars'' and ''World Tour'' and even went as far as to complement Gwen's hair in one episode.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: [[WordOfGod Todd Kauffman]] confirmed that Courtney is Hispanic. However, Tom [=McGillis=] previously stated that Courtney is Asian. The confusion comes from her biography from Total Drama Action and Total Drama All-Stars which states that she is Asian but was later confirmed to be a mistake.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Courtney is an ambitious, competitive and determined young woman and she's also a ruthless, aggressive and antagonistic person to be around.
* AntiHero: In ''Island'' and the first half of ''World Tour''. She strictly follows rules and order, but she can be very mean and aggressive. However, something will cause her to snap and she becomes a villain.
* AttentionWhore: Any time she mentions that she was a CIT, it's practically a cry for attention.
* AxCrazy: When she gets enraged, she becomes extremely violent. In ''World Tour'', Heather says that Izzy has been replaced by Courtney.
* ArcVillain: During the second half of ''Action'', after she boots first-half baddie Justin.
* TheBaroness: During the second half of ''Action''. While she dresses more conservatively than Heather, Courtney is very much of the Sexpot subtype.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: With her sleep-wear and swimsuit.
* BeingEvilSucks: Courtney might be one of the show's strongest, most determined competitors who will do anything to win, but at the end of the day, her over-aggressiveness, arrogant attitude, and willingness to betray everyone and anyone in her pursuit of the million dollars eventually makes her hated by the entire cast, including her former friends and boyfriends who really did care about her but broke things off as soon as it came out she was plotting to take them down too. When she can't win the prize in spite of all her efforts, she's ultimately left with nothing and no one.
* BetaCouple: With Scott in ''All-Stars'', to the pre-established relationships of Heather and Alejandro and Mike and Zoey from the previous two seasons.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Veronica to Gwen's Betty and Duncan's Archie.
** BettyAndVeronicaSwitch: Downplayed in that Duncan didn't show much attraction to Gwen until after the switch, but in ''Island'' she was incredibly uptight, obsessive and strict about following rules while Duncan and Gwen bonded post-merger due to her more laid-back nature and their mutual interest in horror movies.
%% * BelligerentSexualTension:
%% ** With Duncan in ''Island''.
%% ** Develops some with Scott in ''All-Stars''.
* BigBadSlippage: In season 1 she became more vindictive, competitive and unwilling to accept fault but happy to point it out in others as the series progressed. Then Harold rigged the votes to get her eliminated to get back at Duncan and she took it very badly. After that, while other contestants got over being eliminated, anytime we saw her she was either verbally or [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown physically]] attacking someone, and when given another chance to get the money she wasted no time betraying and backstabbing any friend or acquaintance she'd made over the course of the season. When even after that she failed to get the money and wasn't even allowed to compete for it in the second season, she sued Chris to be allowed to compete again and get special treatment and quickly became the main antagonist of the season.
* BigStupidDoodooHead: In "The EX-Files", she calls Duncan a "stupid jerkface" while throwing a sobbing fit over him cheating on her.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: In contrast to [[BitchAlert Heather]], Courtney comes off as civil and polite when she was introduced. However, as the series progressed, her being a {{Control|Freak}} and CompetitionFreak has alienated her from virtually everyone on the show.
* BrainyBrunette: She's pretty intelligent and scholarly, especially when it comes to legal matters. Heather specifically brings this up in ''Action'' when she's looking to steal someone's hair.
--> '''Heather''': I'm too smart to be Lindsay-blonde, but Courtney's? Hers would be ''perfect''.
* BreakTheHaughty: Repeatedly, usually having something to do with Duncan. She ultimately does herself in in ''All-Stars'' when her selfish intent gets the better of her, and ultimately runs out of excuses when the others make sure she knows they've had enough.
* BrokenAce: For all of her various talents, such as her intelligence and athleticism, as well as her [[ThePerfectionist perfectionist]] mindset which motivates her to succeed in everything she does, Courtney's [[NoSocialSkills complete lack of social skills]], [[ControlFreak desire to control everyone around her]], [[GoGetterGirl ruthless ambition]], and simply [[{{Jerkass}} unpleasant]] (sometimes even [[AxCrazy psychotic]]) behavior ruin her chances of winning, and ultimately result in her having nothing and no one by the end of the series.
* BrokenBird: Possibly counts as this as of her downfall in ''All-Stars''.
* BrokenPedestal: In World Tour she was infatuated with Alejandro and remained loyal to him in the finale even after he openly admitted to using her. By All-Stars, she's completely ambivalent to his existence and ended up agreeing to vote him off just to get out of an awkward conversation with Scott. Clearly seeing him confess his love to Heather snapped her out of it.
* CantTakeCriticism: Any time anyone calls her out on something, expect Courtney to whine about how she was a CIT.
* CatchPhrase: "I was a CIT!" or some variation thereof.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the first season, Courtney was a bit of a ControlFreak who just needed to lighten up. This went out the window during the second season, where she TookALevelInJerkass (though she was already showing signs of it by the end of ''Island'' with her behavior in ''Haute Campture'' and especially the special).
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Much like Heather, Courtney too has her fair share of betrayals throughout the series, ranging from friends, enemies and even love interests:
** In the special for the first season, Courtney briefly teams with Duncan but after she manages to retrieve the money and Duncan gets injured, she instantly abandons him without missing a beat.
** Near the end of ''All-Stars'', Courtney plans to betray Gwen some way along the way despite their promise to go the finale together. Instead, she plans to bring her new boyfriend, Scott, with her, believing that he will throw the match for her. Unfortunately for her, Mal reveals her plan to the others before she could carry it out. What makes her horrible is that after giving all sorts of crap to Gwen for her own betrayal two seasons ago, Courtney was all too happy to do the same.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She tends to get rather possessive of boys that she's romantically interested in.
** She was suspicious of Gwen and Duncan's friendship. Though she was eventually proven right in that regard, arguably she pushed that exact situation to happen by trying too hard to control Duncan. When she first began accusing Duncan of messing around with Gwen, there genuinely ''wasn't'' anything happening between them at that point.
** She got possessive and defensive of Alejandro when she suspected (correctly) that Heather was also into him. Though to be fair, she acknowledged that Heather was into him well ''before'' she began going after him herself.
* TheComicallySerious: Courtney is very uptight, ambitious and no-nonsense but she's also extremely energetic and crazy which is oddly amusing.
* CompanionCube: Her PDA in ''Action''.
* CompetitionFreak: She's hellbent on winning, and has no qualms with plowing through anything or any''one'' in her path.
* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: When she comes back in ''Action'', she is frustrated and harsh with her teammates because she really wants to put an effort in winning while her team normally doesn't try, resulting in her teammates trying to vote her off for being too bossy.
* ControlFreak: So much so that she drew up a 32-page contract for Duncan to follow in order to mold him into ''her'' idea of the perfect boyfriend. You can imagine how well that went over.
* CuteAndPsycho: Courtney is an attractive young lady, but she is mentally and emotionally unstable.
* CuteButCacophonic: Courtney's childish and high-pitched voice doesn't mesh very well with her uptight personality.
** In "Get a Clue", she whines to Chris about wanting a prize after she solves his first riddle then after she brought in two samples of DNA, with Chris giving her his bag of cheese puffs to shut her up in the latter case.
** In "The EX-Files", she laughed rather obnoxiously when Duncan got zapped with a laser while pretending to flirt with Tyler. Earlier in the same episode, she was [[TantrumThrowing throwing a tantrum]] like a kindergartner when she broke up with Duncan.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the GoGetterGirl and {{Determinator}}. Courtney is defined by her strong-willed ambition and her determination to win every challenge she's in, making her one of the show's most formidable competitors. However, while she sells herself as TheAce in terms of intelligence and athleticism, she is ''severely'' lacking in people skills, which is a massive handicap in an environment where teamwork is crucial and having a bad reputation can get you booted from the game. She alienates her teammates with her bossy attitude and seems to have little understanding of personal relationships, constantly expecting others to comply with her demands and getting upset when they don't. She has also betrayed or abandoned her friends and/or boyfriends multiple times, as well as endangered her fellow contestants, for personal gain. Her single-minded ambition costs her nearly every friendship and romantic relationship she has over the course of the series. What makes it worse is that not only has she never won, but she has never even made it to the top three during the competition at all. Her throwing away her friendships and relationships amounts to nothing, and she leaves the competition with nothing but the hatred of her castmates, former friends, and former boyfriends.
* DemotedToDragon: While she took the role of ArcVillain in ''Action'', after her breakup with Duncan in ''World Tour'' she takes the role of Alejandro's number-one supporter both before and after her elimination.
* {{Determinator}}: When she wants something, she will fight to the death to get it. However, sometimes her determination ultimately leads to her own destruction.
* DetrimentalDetermination: Courtney will go to any length to get what she wants, no matter what it is, and no matter what it costs her. And it costs her a lot; she backstabs or screws over her allies, friends, and love interests multiple times in pursuit of the million dollars, only to always lose in the end and come away with nothing.
* DirtyCoward: Used Sam as a HumanShield against the Villainous Vultures' leech-shots in "Saving Private Leechball". This promptly results in her being switched to the Villainous Vultures herself.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Usually does this to Duncan, especially in ''Action''. She has [[GroinAttack kicked him in the crotch]] numerous times because he annoyed and provokes her.
* DramaQueen: She behaves this way after the second half of ''Action'', especially when she breaks up with Duncan for the last time in "The EX-Files".
* DubNameChange: In the Canadian French dub, her name is changed to "Audrey."
* DudeMagnet: [[{{Delinquents}} Duncan]], [[MrFanservice Justin]], and [[TeamKiller Scott]] have all shown interest in her.
* EarlyPersonalitySigns: She's so obsessively organized that she was making her own to-do lists while she was still in diapers. Her control freak tendencies also emerged at a young age as she deemed herself a "counselor in training wheels" and gave trike-riding kids speeding tickets at the park.
* EasilyForgiven: Despite her anger issues and controlling behavior, to the point of going to custody battles, Duncan can't stay mad at Courtney in "Celebrity Manhunt" and makes out with her on the bus. However, he subverts it in ''World Tour'' when he cheats on her with Gwen, seemingly sick of Courtney's controlling attitude.
* EnemyMine:
** Courtney and Gwen's mutual dislike for Heather makes them bond in the first half of ''World Tour''.
*** Ironically, the roles are switched once Courtney finds out Gwen had kissed Duncan behind her back, with her siding with Heather (and Sierra) to eliminate Gwen instead.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: As competitive as she is, there are times where even she has shown limits:
** Even she thinks that Heather stealing Gwen's diary and reading it out loud to the whole world is "so uncalled for."
** While at her worst in ''Action'', there's a challenge where she has to make a shark act like her. During the challenge, she implies she turned her shark into sushi, but when Chef questions this she says she would never do anything that cruel. Instead, she made him cough up his lunch.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: In ''All-Stars'', she thinks she deserves to be on the Heroic Hamsters despite her actions in the past seasons. During her short tenure on said team, she has little patience for her team's niceness and pretty much acts as a villain. When she was transferred to the Villainous Vultures, she protests.
* EvilFeelsGood: Is tempted into breaking the rules by Duncan and once she did so it felt so good she just wanted more, leading to her StartOfDarkness.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: Whenever she's on the {{Heel}} side of the HeelFaceRevolvingDoor.
* FallenHero: She started out as a civil contestant who always followed the rules but as the series progressed she started going back and forth on the HeelFaceRevolvingDoor. This is invoked in ''All-Stars'', she starts out on the Heroic Hamsters but gets switched to the Villainous Vultures after she gets caught using Sam as a human shield.
* FatalFlaw:
** Her {{Pride}} is arguably her biggest flaw. Courtney expects others to follow her unquestioningly and gets violent when they don't.
** Courtney also has a pathological need to [[ControlFreak control everything and everyone around her]]. Whenever she's on a team, you can bet both your college and life savings that she'll appoint herself as the leader, and again, insist that people do her things HER way and her way only. This leads to her "pawns" trying to vote her off for being too bossy.
** Whenever Courtney has a choice between another person or the prize money, she'll ''[[{{Greed}} always]]'' choose the money, no matter how important that person is to her (as Duncan, Gwen, and Scott can attest to). Not surprisingly, this has been the final nail in the coffin for all of her relationships, romantic or platonic.
* FightingYourFriend: Courtney is rigged to box with Gwen in ''All-Stars'' just as their friendship seems to be repaired. This actually proves cathartic for both of them as their punches let out all the anger they've had for each other and ultimately strengthen their friendship.
* TheFinickyOne: Courtney was very fussy and had Type-A personality especially in season 1 and in the later seasons, she becomes a short-tempered, controlling and psychotic DramaQueen.
* {{Foil}}:
** Parallels Heather. Both girls are {{Alpha Bitch}}es who serve as the ArcVillain of a season, both formed multiple alliances (notably both with Beth), and both garnered a lot of hatred from their fellow campers. However, while Heather was a CardCarryingVillain who knew fully well what she was doing was bad, Courtney had a case of MoralMyopia and believed her actions were justified while having trouble processing that she was the villain. Heather started off unrepentant and ruthless in her crusade to win, before she gradually mellowed out and had a HazyFeelTurn. Courtney started off as a harsh but well-meaning girl, before being [[TheCorrupter tempted by Duncan]] and [[EvilFeelsGood turning to the dark side]]. Their antagonistic approaches are also quite different; Heather intimidated and [[ManipulativeBitch manipulated others]] to orchestrate eliminations, while Courtney exploits LoopHoleAbuse in conjunction with her [[ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections lawyers]], and demonstrates physical prowess to dominate in challenges that Heather fell short on.
** To Trent. Both of them were major characters in ''Island'' who had major romance arcs with one of the final four, with both being eliminated in the same way. Both of them promptly break up with their respective love interests, with said love interests (Gwen and Duncan) later ending up in a relationship with each other. However, Trent is substantially more considerate of Gwen's feelings and wants her to feel happy, while Courtney is more assertive and demanding in her relationship with Duncan. Both end up with their relationships ending, however Gwen and Trent remain on good terms after the breakup, Courtney becomes immensely hostile towards Duncan and constantly antagonizes him.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Her attitude in the season 1 special "Total Drama Drama Drama Island" provides a little preview of her characterization and relationships to come: she outright challenges Chris, getting "behind the scenes" and commandeering an air balloon that was only supposed to be for staff; she goes from being sweet and "in it together" with Duncan to abandoning him as soon as he sprains an ankle (and ''after'' he just wrestled an alligator for them); when DJ, Cody, Tyler, and Owen are in danger, she wouldn't hesitate to let them die; and the episode ends with her being a very SoreLoser over not being on season 2, vowing that Chris and company will be in huge trouble:
--> '''DJ:''' You wouldn't let us fall to our deaths!
--> '''Courtney:''' Oh yes I would! I don't even like you very much.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: In the ''All-Stars'' episode "Sundae Muddy Sundae", she refuses to eat her own sundae (which had burnt chocolate and bird vomit) because it was too "gross". But in Season 3's "Chinese Fake-Out", one plot point of the episode was Courtney revealing she had a cast iron stomach and was eating far worse meals for Alejandro.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Even in ''Island,'' when she is at her most civil, she doesn't get along with most of the other contestants due to her bossy nature and neuroses. When she protests that her elimination was unfair because Harold rigged the votes, the other eliminated campers give her NoSympathy.
-->'''Eva:''' Didn't see it. Don't care.\\
'''Lindsay:''' You just would have been kicked off in another episode. No one liked you that much.\\
'''Noah:''' You're here. You lost. ''Get over it.''
* {{Flanderization}}: Her competitive nature is greatly exaggerated in ''Action'' onward, [[DependingOnTheWriter often flip-flopping]] between her more civil self in ''Island'' and this by the end of each subsequent season; needless to say, her inconsistency is baffling.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Courtney may be a cultured preppie, but she has shown that she is very athletic and can kick butt.
* GoGetterGirl: She's a perfectionist who has ambitions to get into law school.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: She wears a purple princess dress in "The Princess Pride".
* GreenIsGross: She hates green jelly due to its resemblance to snot.
* HairTriggerTemper: Courtney started off a bit sane but she develops some extreme anger issues the more she gets invested in the game show.
* HatedByAll: She is considered to be one of the most hated contestants, considering how she treated the others and the number of times she [[ChronicBackStabbingDisorder betrayed those who are willing to put up with her]]. This is best shown at the end of ''Sundae Muddy Sundae'' [[spoiler: where after her deception is revealed to the others, she gets NoSympathy from almost anyone when she's flushed down.]]
* HazyFeelTurn: She supposedly had some degree of redemption in ''World Tour'' and ''All-Stars'', but it's questionable just where her morality gets placed after that.
* HerOwnWorstEnemy: Courtney shows many times that she has a chance to reach the finale but in the end, her pride and selfishness tend to be her downfall. She can be a team player but her necessity to be the team ''leader'' leads everyone else to find her bossy. She also is capable of being civil and making friends as well as being in romantic relationships but her tendency to betray everyone makes her one of the most hated contestants.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Eventually she becomes this with Gwen in ''All-Stars''. [[spoiler:[[ShaggyDogStory And then came]] "Sundae Muddy Sundae"]].
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Face in ''Island'', Heel in ''Action'', went back to face for the first half of ''World Tour'', then switched to Heel in the second half, stayed Heel for part of ''All-Stars'', went back to Face after reconciling with Gwen, and finishes off as Heel again.
* HotBlooded: She can be a little too passionate and competitive as she's too high-strung and neurotic to relax until she wins.
* {{Hypocrite}}: It seems that Courtney has a big case of MoralMyopia, not exactly holding herself to the same standards as she does everyone else.
** She spends most of "Phobia Factor" yelling at her teammates for not conquering their fears, but when her own turn comes around she's too scared to even ''attempt'' facing it. This incident seems to result in subtle CharacterDevelopment, as when Bridgette, Duncan, and Geoff later mock Tyler for failing to overcome his fear, Courtney tells them to stop.
** In ''Action'', Courtney unfairly gets herself put back into the show. Then she complains about how Owen returned "unfairly", but Chris gets it shoved in her face that he came back the same manner as she did, so she's in no position to criticize.
** In ''World Tour'' she flirts with Tyler (Lindsay's boyfriend) to make Duncan jealous right after criticizing Gwen for being a boyfriend-stealer.
*** For that matter, she and the rest of the cast treat Duncan cheating on her as the worst betrayal ever, while conveniently ignoring the times Courtney has betrayed Duncan (starting back in "Total Drama Drama Drama Island"), flirted with another guy (Justin) in front of him, and been fairly abusive to him (kicking him regularly in the kiwis, making lists of the ways he needs to change himself, etc) during their relationship.
** After giving Gwen a hard time for betraying her friendship, she intends to betray her in ''All-Stars''. It doesn't end well. She also tries to actively conceal the whole kissing fiasco with her, Cameron, and Scott from Gwen, while acknowledging that she's been giving Gwen a hard time about "the whole kissing thing" with Duncan.
* ICanChangeMyBeloved: In both ''Action'' and ''World Tour'', she makes lists of all Duncan's faults, insisting that "he will be perfect" once she corrects them.
* IconicItem: Her PDA in ''Action''.
* IdiotBall: Gets hit by this big time in ''All-Stars'' where she makes a chart showing her elimination order for the other contestants, which includes betraying her boyfriend and her bestie, then leaves it lying around for Mal to find.
* InelegantBlubbering: Whenever things don't go her way, Courtney has a tendency to [[CuteButCacophonic whine and cry rather loudly]].
* InformedAbility: Courtney's ''Island'' bio claims she's a published author, having written the award-winning book ''Total Triumph for Teens'', and that her bedroom is covered with trophies, ribbons, and plaques; she's apparently never lost anything in her life before ''Total Drama''. You would be forgiven for not believing that with her performances in ''Total Drama Island''. In Season 1, Courtney refuses to jump off the cliff into shark-infested waters as part of the first challenge; she claims to have a medical condition. When Chris warns her that she's risking the possibility of elimination, Courtney accepts the risk, believing the majority of the members on the opposite team won't jump. She was wrong, and the only people that didn't jump were DJ and Beth. Later, Courtney elects herself as project manager to lead the team in building the hot tub but fails to get her team to build it, and as Duncan points out Courtney's management skills have demonstrably fallen flat. It was clear that Courtney was going to be voted off and she was only saved by Ezekiel angering the whole team and getting voted off instead. In the "Phobia Factor" episode where the challenge was to face their fears, Courtney gave each of her teammates a hard time when they have trouble facing their fears, but when the time comes for her to face hers, she can't even go through with it. Yet for some reason, she was not voted off and Tyler was sent home, despite the fact he at least tried to overcome his fear.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Sometimes, when her strategies are failing. She calls Lindsay selfish for voting herself off since it left Courtney with only one other girl to try and ally with... but Lindsay wouldn't have been eliminated if ''Courtney'' hadn't voted for her too. Also pops up in ''World Tour'' when she argues about leading Team Amazon:
-->'''Courtney:''' I happen to like winning and being in first class, which happens to make me an ideal leader.
* InSeriesNickname: Duncan calls her "Princess" in a teasing but affectionate way.
* InsufferableGenius: Constantly boasts about her various skills and CIT experience.
* IronStomach: Zigzagged. In "Chinese Fake-Out", she claims to have a strong stomach, which Alejandro exploits to help him get past the gross Chinese food challenge, but in "Sundae Muddy Sundae", she can't bring herself to eat a sundae with bird vomit and burnt chocolate on it.
* ItsAllAboutMe: She gets more and more self-absorbed with her domineering nature and brattiness becoming some of her worst traits.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's hostile, egotistical and violent, but she can also be kind and helpful when she's not on the other side of her mood swings.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In ''Action'', she treats Lindsay to a spa day after berating her earlier, only to reveal that she only treated her to get ahold of her DNA sample for the challenge, and continues to treat Lindsay like dirt the rest of the episode with no reason to hide her true colors.
* KarmicButtMonkey: Much of Courtney's misfortune is often brought upon herself by her own arrogance.
* KickTheMoralityPet: There are a few people who are willing to befriend Courtney and while she cherishes them, she will not hesitate to stab them in the back in order to win.
* KnightTemplar: Unlike most antagonists, Courtney isn't a CardCarryingVillain. She genuinely thinks of herself as a hero and will usually make an attempt to justify her actions.
* TheLancer: On Team Amazon.
* LargeHam: When Courtney is angry, she makes sure everyone knows it, like when Harold's vote-rigging got her eliminated in ''Island''.
-->'''Courtney:''' I do not concede! I do not concede! I was your only hope! I was a Counselor in Training!
* LaserGuidedKarma:
** She eliminates Sadie for accidentally pelting her with crabapples, then gets eliminated herself when Harold rigs the ballot box in a misguided attempt to get revenge on Duncan. It's later mentioned in the first season special that she ''lost'' her first lawsuit despite the blatant rigging.
** Happens in ''Action'' too. After spending the whole episode bossing Duncan around and making him memorize a 32-page essay, karma bites her in the butt when a shark steals her PDA, making her spend the rest of the episode trying to get it back. And when she finally does, the challenge is over and in the end, she ends up getting betrayed and voted off by Duncan.
*** This can also be a case of delayed karma: in "Total Drama Drama Drama Island", she and Duncan team up to retrieve the case of money, up until Duncan sprains his ankle. Even though he just wrestled an alligator for them, Courtney promptly leaves him to fend for himself, saying the opportunity for her to win the money is more important than sticking with him.
* LeaderWannabe: She tries to take up the leadership position in every team she's on, with mixed results. In ''Action'', she mentions that she was once in an all-girl rock band called the A-Type Psychotic Crazies, but they broke up before their first performance because all of them wanted to be the lead singer and no one wanted to be back up.
* LeanAndMean: In "The Princess Pride", Leshawna refers to her as a "skinny, rich girl" in a written note to Harold, and Courtney has very bad cases of MoralMyopia and KnightTemplar.
* LegFocus: While acting as a bank teller in "Ocean's Eight - Or Nine", Duncan tells her she has "a great set of legs".
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Played with. Depending on which side of the HeelFaceRevolvingDoor she is on, Courtney can either be Light or Dark.
* LimitedWardrobe: Her bio mentions that for ''Island'', she packed five identical copies of her main outfit.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Duncan in a very warped way. He's fine with her loving him, he's fine with her hating him but when she shows apathy to him in ''All-Stars'', he has a complete breakdown.
* LoveCannotOvercome: Ultimately, her relationship with Duncan doesn't work out because they're just too different and can't compromise or agree on how much one of them has to change to please the other.
* LoveMartyr: To Alejandro. Even after he admitted he was just using her, she still supports him.
* LudicrousPrecision: She apparently outlined ''three hundred and seventeen'' minor transgressions in the 32-page "how to be a perfect boyfriend" contract she drew up for Duncan to follow. Later she makes another "small list" of an additional 46 things she wants to change about him.
* MaleGaze: Courtney gets a bunch of butt shots for no other reason besides {{Fanservice}} in every season in which she participates.
* ManipulativeBitch: Not to the extent of Heather or Alejandro, but she has her moments, especially in ''Action'' and ''All-Stars''.
* MoodSwinger: She can go from sweet and civil to devious and violent, or vice versa, on a moment's notice.
* MsFanservice: As mentioned above, she gets ''a lot'' of MaleGaze. It's especially noticeable when she does her Cheerleader bit. Her superhero outfit as the "Human Cricket" is also [[SensualSpandex notable]].
* NervousWreck: She gets super obsessive and uptight over everything, especially with game rules and relationships and if things don't go well, she freaks out.
* NeverMyFault: She rarely accepts her own failures, and when she does it's usually out of self-preservation rather than genuine remorse. Her profound lack of humility and constant excuses ultimately comes back to bite her in the ass.
* NewFriendEnvy: In ''All-Stars'', she becomes jealous of Zoey's friendship [[HeterosexualLifePartners with Gwen]].
* NiceMeanAndInBetween:
** In terms of the love triangle mess in ''World Tour'', she is the mean to Gwen's nice and Duncan's in-between.
** In ''All Stars'', she is the mean to Zoey's nice and Sierra's in-between on the Heroic Hamsters before Courtney gets switched over to the Villainous Vultures, where she is the in-between to Gwen's nice and Heather's mean, similar to their dynamic on Team Amazon in ''World Tour''.
* NightmareFace: In her angriest moments, she sports one of these, and it's usually a sign that things are about to get violent.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Has a lot in common with [[Characters/SurvivorVanuatu Eliza Orlins]], as they're both law students who are strongly outspoken about how they think their team should perform, leading to conflict and unpopularity with their teammates and being targeted at many votes. Interestingly, both of their highest rankings as competitors was 4th place.
* NoSocialSkills: She may be an effective competitor, but she doesn't really understand how to interact with people or make them like her. In ''Island'', her bossy and uptight attitude only served to irritate her teammates until Harold rigged the votes to have her kicked off. When she later protested her unfair removal from the competition, Lindsay straight-up told her that she just would have been voted off later, because nobody liked her anyway.
* ObliviouslyEvil: Judging by her reaction when Chris transfers her to the Villainous Vultures, Courtney has no idea that her actions throughout the three episodes she is in the Heroic Hamsters (or the past seasons) make her unfit to be a hero.
* ObliviousToHatred: She is shocked to hear from Lindsay in ''Haute Camp-ture'' that the rest of the contestants are no more fond of her than they are of Heather.
-->'''Lindsay''': You just would have been kicked off in another episode. No one really liked you that much.\\
'''Courtney''': ''(gasps)'' That is ''so'' not true! ''Everyone'' likes me! I used to be a CIT!
* ObsessedAreTheListMakers: She has a habit of obsessively making lists whenever she's stressed.
-->'''Courtney''': ''(furiously writing on a notepad)'' Okay. "Eliminating Heather" is now number 1, 2, 3, and 5 of my top 5 goals. "Ripping out Duncan's eyebrow ring" is number 4.
* OperationJealousy: She attempts to make her former love interest Duncan jealous by flirting with Tyler, then Alejandro. It doesn't work.
* OppositesAttract:
** With Duncan. Deconstructed in that their personality clashes and constant fighting make their relationship so unstable that it eventually breaks apart.
** During ''All-Stars'' she finds herself attracted to Scott, a simple-minded FarmBoy with little care for etiquette, heavily contrasting the strict and prim Courtney. Scott himself is very similar to Duncan, so it sort of makes sense that she would be drawn to him. This doesn't last either.
* OpportunisticBastard: In three out of the four seasons she competes in, she at least attempts to find some way to get some money regardless. In ''Island'' she sues the show, in ''Action'' she convinces Duncan to split the money in his ending and plans to sue again in Beth's, and in ''World Tour'' she tries to talk Alejandro into giving her 1/5 of the million in exchange for her help during the finale.
* ThePerfectionist: She ain't called "The Type A" for nothing.
* PetTheDog: When Courtney's competitive spirit doesn't get the best of her, she occasionally has kind moments.
** Her friendship with Bridgette in general.
** She defended Tyler when the other Killer Bass were taunting him after his elimination, even though she clearly didn't like him very much.
** She hugged Harold when he won the talent show challenge.
** She was one of the more vocal about liking Leshawna when the eliminated contestants were talking about her.
--->'''Courtney''': I can't say anything bad about her! And I ''excel'' about saying bad things about people.
** In ''Action'', she nicely asked Beth if she and Duncan kept her up with their relationship talk.
** In ''Jamaica Me Sweat'' she was concerned for Owen and Izzy when they got crushed by the plane.
* PimpedOutDress: Her princess gown in "The Princess Pride" and her wedding gown in "Niagara Brawls".
* PlotAllergy: In "[[Recap/TotalDramaDialMForMerger Dial M for Merger]]", Courtney claims to be lactose intolerant when she's sent on a trip to a local cheese factory. And in "[[Recap/TotalDramaHeroesVsVillains Heroes vs. Villains]]", she starts sneezing as an allergic response to flowers. Neither allergy comes up in any other episode.
* PomPomGirl: Briefly in "Action" when, for a challenge, she tries to teach her shark to cheer and start dancing with two pom pom like example.
* PragmaticVillainy: Sometimes Courtney will make rational decisions to further her goals. For example, in "The Ex-Files", Courtney sees Heather getting sucked into what seems to be a portal to a different dimension, but she decides to pull her out of the portal because Heather would be useful to her to vote off Gwen.
--> '''Courtney''': Hmm, she is a pain... ugh, but I need her vote to get rid of Gwen. (proceeds to pull Heather out of the portal)
* {{Pride}}: Her defining trait, and her FatalFlaw.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Her entire moral outlook.
* PsychopathicWomanChild: Courtney doesn't seem this way at first, due to her prim and uptight exterior, but as time goes on she shows many signs of psychopathy such as an inability to learn from her mistakes, a disregard for the feelings and even the lives of others, and having extreme difficulty prioritizing long term relationships over short-term gain. She resorts to leveraging people's lives for her own gain rather often: threatening to kill DJ, Cody, Owen, and Tyler for the million dollars in the first season special, holding the only means of escape from an exploding building hostage until the others agree to split the money with her if they win, and offering to feed one of the other contestants to a shark in exchange for it returning her PDA. As for the womanchild part, she has a tendency to throw destructive temper tantrums and whine childishly whenever things aren't going her way, most notably whining about wanting a prize for so long that Chris gives her his snacks just to shut her up.
* PunnyName: She often threatens to sue the show and her name's '''Court'''ney.
* RedOniBlueOni: Her short temper and overachiever personality make her 100% red to Bridgette's blue
* RelationshipRevolvingDoor: Her past relationships with both Duncan and Scott:
** Has an on-again-off-again relationship with Courtney, throughout ''Island'' and ''Action'', until ''World Tour'' where Duncan becomes more interested in Gwen and ends up forming a love triangle, causing animosity with Courtney.
** When she competes in ''All-Stars'': upon switching to the Villainous Vultures, she starts bonding with Scott, and they eventually hook up after an accidental kiss in "Zeek and Ye Shall Find". However, this relationship is short-lived when they break up after only two hours due to Cameron (manipulated by Mal) kissing Courtney. Scott forgives Courtney in the next episode and they become a couple again, only to break up an episode later due to Mal exposing Courtney's elimination chart.
* RevengeBeforeReason: Her primary motive in the second half of ''World Tour'' is to get Gwen eliminated any way she can, as revenge for Gwen betraying her and stealing her boyfriend. She eventually resorts to throwing her team's challenges, risking herself being eliminated in the process.
* RichBitch: A couple episodes imply that she's rich or at least well-off, such as when she filed a lawsuit (unsuccessfully) after getting eliminated in ''Island,'' and later hired a team of lawyers to successfully sue her way back into the competition in ''Action.'' "One Million Bucks, B.C." shows her indulging in lobster and Belgian chocolate. Also, in "The Princess Pride", Leshawna explicitly refers to Courtney as a "skinny rich girl" in her note to Harold as he was singing Courtney's princess song in the confessional.
* RidiculouslyHighRelationshipStandards: PlayedWith in that she wanted to change Duncan to fit her standards rather than break up with him for not meeting them. Being a [[ThePerfectionist perfectionist]], she placed many high standards on Duncan including forcing him to sign a 32-page contract agreeing to various terms of their relationship and making a LongList of things he needs to change about himself to make their relationship perfect
* TheRival:
** She often clashes with Heather, particularly during ''World Tour''.
** In ''All-Stars'', Courtney feels threatened by Zoey.
* RunningGag: In ''Island'', going on really long tangents in the confessional about how she can't stand Duncan, listing everything she hates about him, and denying that she would ever like him.
-->'''Leshawna''': ''(from outside the confessional)'' Yo! You still protestin' in there, or are you gonna let someone else have a turn?!?
* SamaritanRelationshipStarter: She finds out that Duncan is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold when she sees him tricking DJ with a replacement Bunny so DJ wouldn't be sad.
* ScheduleFanatic: Courtney reveals in an ''Action'' [[ConfessionCam confessional spot]], that she schedules ordinary daily activities ''years'' in advance.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: Her use of her lawyers on ''Action'', which has gotten her multiple immunities and preferential treatment by the producers. [[spoiler:As the show goes on, though, they eventually start to tire of her attitude. Her lawyers stop returning her calls near the end of the season.]]
* SecondLove: She falls in love with Scott after falling in love with Duncan. [[spoiler: They broke up after few hours though... and then got back together! And then broke up again when Mike (Mal) show to Scott and others her planned elimination order...]]
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: She practically ''lives'' by this rule. According to her official bio for the first season, her personal motto is, "If you can't come in first, don't come in at all."
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: Around the halfway mark of ''Action'' was when she started accusing Gwen of stealing Duncan away from her. Ultimately, she was partially responsible for making this come true herself by abusing Duncan so much that he cheated on her with Gwen anyway.
* SixthRanger: For the Killer Grips.
* SkewedPriorities: She desperately wants to win, and will do ''anything'' to achieve that, even if it means endangering her own friendships if it is convenient to her plans. Ironically, it's the fact that she places such little value on the well-being of her teammates that she ultimately screws herself over in the game, as her aggressive attitude and selfishness inevitably leads to her fellow competitors rallying against her every time victory seems within reach.
* SlapSlapKiss: With Duncan in ''Island'' and ''Action''. She ends this in ''World Tour''.
* SlasherSmile: She sports one in the ''All-Stars'' opening when she's seen fighting Gwen and Duncan with a burning jousting stick.
* SmallNameBigEgo: As part of her ''Action'' persona. Duncan even calls her "a high-maintenance chick with a superiority complex."
* SmugSnake: Courtney is incredibly power-hungry, egotistical and bratty and while she's very ruthless and competitive during competitions, she never wins because of her worst qualities and the fact she gets on people's nerves, especially in Total Drama Action and Total Drama All-Stars.
* SoapboxSadie: She does genuinely try to be a polite girl, and thanks to some character development in the first half of ''World Tour'' she does come across as genuinely nice at times. At the same time, she's overly preachy, blindly follows the rules, and tends to be an intolerably condescending and whiny brat.
* SoreLoser: She sues her way into ''Action'' after being disqualified from the competition in the final episode of ''Island''. Each time she loses a challenge, she whines to Chris, threatens to call her lawyers, and even visits physical harm on the winner (usually Duncan).
* SpicyLatina: According to WordOfGod, she is Hispanic, though her attitude isn't really spicy so much as uptight and shrill.
* SpoiledBrat: She's egotistical, entitled and gets whiny when she doesn't get her way. She uses her lawyers when she doesn't get her way. This trait gets even worse when she's in ''Total Drama Action'' when she gets more privileged than the other contestants and still acts childish and bossy.
* SpotlightStealingSquad:
** She becomes one in ''Action'' after she re-enters the competition under questionable means and serves as the new ArcVillain.
** She also becomes a more notorious Spotlight Stealer when she and Gwen get involved in a LoveTriangle with Duncan in ''World Tour''.
** Her [[spoiler:ultimately failed]] rekindled friendship with Gwen is a major plot point in ''All-Stars''.
* StepfordSmiler: Tries to become one after Duncan cheats on her in season 3. It doesn't work.
--> '''Courtney:''' ''(confessional)'' Well, at least I still have my...pride. ''(tries to smile at the camera, but then breaks down in tears)''
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: In "Haute Camp-Ture" she pulled a lamppost of it's hinges and beat Horold over the head with it, later in the same episode she struggled to win a WimpFight with him.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Her reaction whenever she's paired with contestants like Lindsay or Owen, especially in "Heroes Vs. Villains" where she screams in frustration when Lindsay forgets how to push.
* TantrumThrowing: Completely loses it in "The EX-Files" after finding out Duncan cheated on her, lying on the floor, sobbing and kicking her legs while throwing a bowl of spaghetti at him.
* TeamKiller: She attempts to throw challenges several times in ''World Tour'' just to get rid of Gwen.
* TeamMom: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. She sees herself as one, but she overdoes it to the point where she's viewed as being obnoxious.
* ThrowingTheFight: Once she finds out about Duncan and Gwen's kiss in "Greece's Pieces", she intentionally tries to lose the challenge so she can vote out Gwen.
* TooDumbToLive:
** In "Top Dog", she lunges at a man-eating shark because she was annoyed at it, and ends up in crutches.
** In "Sundae Muddy Sundae" not only does she betray her closest friends (Gwen and Scott), but she fails to secure her crudely-drawn chart showcasing her strategy to defeat her four remaining opponents. Her continued aggression in that same episode does ''absolutely nothing'' to dissuade the others from voting her out, and for her selfish act she leaves completely empty-handed.
* TookALevelInBadass: Back in ''Total Drama Island'', Courtney's had a poor record in challenges, even failing to compete in the very first challenge. Subsequent seasons shows her gaining many skills such as martial arts, acrobatics, cheerleading and among others and is tied with Gwen for winning the second most number of invincibilities. As for her leadership skills, she fails to lead her team properly in the first season but in the second, the manages to break the Killer Grips' poor record and win the last two challenges prior to the merge.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In ''Action'' she went from being a slightly stuck-up and haughty girl who was still civil enough to be the TeamMom, to a scheming, spoiled princess who uses her lawyers to cheat her way to numerous advantages on the show. She basically transformed from a significantly better version of [[RichBitch Heather]] to a straight-up {{Expy}}.
* TookALevelInKindness: She's actually quite nice during the first half of ''World Tour'' (at the very least, she was more tolerant of failure). It all gets ruined when she finds out Duncan cheated on her.
* TokenEvilTeammate: In ''All-Stars'', she's this to the Heroic Hamsters. Fitting, considering Gwen can (possibly) pass off as a hero but is with the Villainous Vultures instead. [[spoiler:She is forced to swap teams with Duncan, making her a villain]].
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Girly Girl to Gwen's (and to an extent, Bridgette's) Tomboy.
* {{Tsundere}}: Type B in ''Island'', Type A in ''Action'', with VERY heavy emphasis on the "tsuntsun" part.
* UncertainDoom: Was last seen floating into the atmosphere in a balloon filled with Owen's farts.
* TheUnfettered: When the chips are down, she will resort to any tactic in order to win, including betrayal, physical violence, and ''attempted murder.''
* UngratefulBitch:
** Duncan wrestles an alligator to retrieve a case of money for the two of them. Courtney promptly runs off with the money when, moments later, he sprains his ankle, saying that he'll just slow them down.
** In "Total Drama All-Stars'', Gwen put a lot of effort to mend their broken friendship, which includes saving Courtney from an angry deer and breaking up with Duncan. While Courtney cherished their reformed friendship, she also has no qualms about betraying Gwen for the sake of winning the season. Gwen is not happy when she finds out about this, even lampshading in the confessional how all of her efforts have gone to waste.
* UptightLovesWild:
** For Duncan... at first.
** For Scott in ''All-Stars''
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: People in this show are pathologically incapable of remembering that she [[OnceASeason always]] [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder betrays everyone.]] Even in ''All Stars'' when her antics got her switched into the [[LegionOfDoom Villainous Vultures]] people still acted as if she was a TokenGoodTeammate.
* WantingIsBetterThanHaving: This ends up being the case with Scott, who was everything she supposedly wanted Duncan to be. A JerkWithAHeartOfGold who was loving, affectionate, [[SingleTargetSexuality completly devoted to her]] and [[ExtremeDoormat willing to cater to her whims]]. In the end she turned out to have no genuine interest in him or if she did it was not enough to overcome her ChronicBackstabbingDisorder.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: To Duncan.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Admits in ''All-Stars'' that she's extremely bitter over what happened between herself and Gwen in ''World Tour'', even after the entire mess with Duncan. Unfortunately, even after they finally buried the hatchet she ''still'' tries to pull the rug out from Gwen when it is revealed she doesn't intend to take her to the finale as they promised; Gwen is quick to return this sentiment to her and Courtney is unable to talk her way out of elimination.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Fails to get over her fear of green jelly, costing her the much-needed triple score and more importantly the challenge. Comes up again in "Food Fright".
* WomanScorned: A major plot thread in the latter half of ''World Tour'' focuses on her vendetta against her boyfriend Duncan and friend Gwen after finding out that the two kissed.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Alejandro admits that manipulating her would've normally been very difficult... save that Duncan cheating on her and causing the end of their relationship has made her shaken and desperate.
* YouthfulFreckles: Has a few on her nose.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: When angry enough, her [[SuperStrength strength gets enhanced]] enough to rival Eva and [[spoiler:(mutated) Dakota's]]. In ''Island'', as part of the first challenge, she had problems moving a crate that Eva carried effortlessly, but later in the same season, when finding out that Harold cheated to get her eliminated, she rips off a light post and bends it around Harold's body to make him a human pretzel. In ''Action'', this strength-enhanced rage becomes more evident as she fights 3 sharks bare-handed and, before that, lifts a bed (with Lindsay on top) over her head.

A tough, aggressive, grade-A juvenile delinquent who has been in and temperamental girl interested in sports, fitness, and bodybuilding. Eva's physical strength is matched only by her bad temper, but out of juvie countless times. Duncan has the difficulty she has controlling her anger means tough-guy attitude that she usually ends up frightening others away from her.comes with those experiences, but underneath his brooding and rebellious bad-boy demeanor is a hidden heart of gold -- not that he would ever admit to it.

Added DiffLines:

* AbortedArc: In ''All-Stars'', he tries to get Courtney's attention and has some possible jealousy over her crush on Scott. Both of these plots get abandoned after "Moon Madness" when [[spoiler:Gwen breaks up with him]]. Additionally, he also tried to expose Mal while he was pretending to be Mike. This plot is dropped due to his elimination before being given to Alejandro.
* AbsurdPhobia: Despite his gruff and intimidating tough-guy image, Duncan is afraid of Celine Dion music store standees.
* TheAce: He excels at everything that involves breaking the law, be that theft, vandalism, stripping vehicles, hand-to-hand combat, or [[MasterActor pretending to cry]]. Heather once even calls him an EvilGenius.
* AffablyEvil: He's evil and does nothing to hide it, but can show streaks of politeness. He also does manage to get along well with some of the other contestants. Most notably with DJ, Owen, Geoff, Beth, Zoey, and [[spoiler:(formerly)]] Gwen. He also usually treats people with respect, until they wrong him.
* AffectionateNickname: He was once called "Dunkie" by Courtney after he got knocked out with a tranquillizer dart in "Dial M for Merger" from ''Action''.
* AntiHero: A mix between UnscrupulousHero and NominalHero. He enjoys being bad just for the sake of it but is never an outright villain unless he's an...
* AntiVillain: Type I, due to him being a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, and [[EvenEvilHasStandards never goes as far as the antagonists do]].
* ArchEnemy: Among the people he bullies, Harold is his favorite victim. They have had a conflict that has only intensified since day one. Duncan enjoys tormenting Harold for his geekiness, and Harold despises Duncan for this treatment, displaying a classic BullyAndWimpPairing.
* AttentionWhore: In ''All-Stars''. He becomes frustrated when Courtney refuses to acknowledge his existence and he got a little jealous when the rest of the Villainous Vultures kept trying to form an alliance with Gwen instead of him.
* AxCrazy: He loves to stab things, blow stuff up, burn things, you name it. But the one which takes the cake has to be when he blows up Chris's mansion and runs from it laughing, [[CardCarryingVillain just to prove how evil he is]].
-->'''Duncan:''' ''[[StabTheSalad (gleefully stabbing a bunch of bananas with his knife)]]'' Die! Die! Die!
* BadassArmFold: He often poses one before a challenge.
* BadassDecay: In-universe during ''All-Stars''. He's considerably gotten more remorseful (or, at least, calmer) since the beginning of the series; so Chris and the cast have been mocking him, labeling him a softy. Every attempt he makes to be bad seems to fall flat, as well; he always ends up doing good instead. However, he finally manages to get his badass reputation back when he blows up Chris's mansion.
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: In the first episode, he's seen giving a deer a noogie. Lindsay later cites this as why she doesn't want him to win.
-->'''Lindsay''': Anyone who treats deer or trees badly is not a friend to deer or trees!
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Courtney in ''Island''.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Being a mischievous CardCarryingJerkass striving to be evil might make him seem like a joke. However, he is none to be underestimated, as he can be a real threat when he wants to be. Especially seen in earlier seasons, where the other contestants are downright ''frightened'' of him.
* BigOlUnibrow: Duncan's unibrow, coupled with his mohawk and piercings, communicates his aggressive personality and criminal history.
* BirdsOfAFeather: He and Gwen get along due to their similar brooding, cynical personalities and love of horror movies.
* BlackSheep: Duncan comes from a long line of cops. His dad is a cop. His mom is a cop. His uncle, aunt, grandma and cousins are cops. Like them, Duncan spends lots of time in police stations. The trouble is, Duncan feels more comfortable on the 'opposite side of the law', so his police station visits usually include a jail cell and a parole officer.
* BoxedCrook: It's implied Chris pulled some strings to get him out of juvey when he started doing the show, Chris threatens to send him back to keep him in line when he first sees the camp.
* BrilliantButLazy: He makes a pretty good team leader, in fact, he's probably the best out of all the Era One characters, but he much prefers to be TheLancer and will usually passively accept whoever self-appoints themselves as TheLeader ([[EveryoneHasStandards unless it's Heather.]])
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: In a non-romantic example, he's the Brooding Boy (or so he tries to be) to Zoey's Gentle Girl in ''All-Stars''. He's a delinquent with a HairTriggerTemper and a HiddenHeartOfGold while Zoey is a NiceGirl who tries to see the best in everyone.
* BrutalHonesty: Don't expect him to sugarcoat anything. Though he ''can'' be a nice guy at times, he'll often respond coldly when being truly honest.
* TheBully: Duncan is the original example for the franchise, paving the way for many bullies after him. Harold is the primary target of his ire, but anyone who crosses his path is fair game. In the first season, he is even known [[ExaggeratedTrope to bully the wildlife]]. Duncan does slowly grow out of this over time and is gradually revealed to be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who hides a gentler side under a tough exterior.
* BullyAndWimpPairing:
** Constantly with Harold throughout ''Island'' and ''Action'', lampshaded when Chris forces them to work as a team in "Crouching Courtney, Hidden Owen", where they end up working very well together, that is until Owen comes and wrecks it.
** Also a bit of it with Cody in ''World Tour'', due to fighting over Gwen.
* CardCarryingJerkass: Constantly brags about how bad he is, his stereotype is even called "The Delinquent". Gets hilariously ineffective when he sticks to this label harder than ever in ''All-Stars'' despite rapidly [[TookALevelInKindness Taking Levels In Kindness]].
* CassandraTruth: His ex-girlfriends do not believe him when he warns them about Mal in ''All-Stars''.
* CatchPhrase:
** "Later, losers."
** "Whatever."
* CheatersNeverProsper: In the fire-making challenge of "One Million Bucks, B.C." he cheats his way to victory by using a lighter instead of sticks and stones; moments later he gets busted by Chris and the reward is given to the other team instead.
* CollaredByFashion: His spiked dog collar, which he also never takes off. Somewhat justified by the simplistic animation style.
* ComedicSociopath: He usually likes to see his fellow contestants frightened and often shows little to no regard of others, which often explains his criminal nature.
* CopCriminalFamily: Duncan is a juvenile delinquent whose parents are both in the police force.
* DarkIsEvil: Downplayed. He wears a black shirt and collar, enjoys punk rock, and is a juvenile delinquent. However, he can also be a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at times.
* DeadpanSnarker: He makes a lot sarcastic remarks given his delinquent attitude.
* DeadSparks: {{Implied|Trope}}. Although Duncan's relationship with Gwen did not deteriorate like it did with Courtney, they're shown to lack chemistry and affection at the start of ''All-Stars''. With them being moved to different teams, Gwen's attempts to make up with Courtney combined with Duncan's attempts to get Courtney's attention eventually causes [[spoiler: Gwen to break up with Duncan. It's telling that Duncan's more confused than heartbroken regarding the break-up]].
* DeathGlare: Gives these quite often to seem intimidating.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Duncan is a deconstruction of the CardCarryingJerkass and {{Delinquents}}. Thought out the first three seasons Duncan was a thug and bully who would often get away with his crimes. To be fair, Duncan can be a nice guy when he wants to be, cares for his friends (DJ, Geoff, Owen, Beth, Zoey, and Gwen) and girlfriend at the time, Courtney, and is not above being nice to people he dislikes, like his enemy Harold. However, Duncan often gets away with his dirty deeds like humiliating Harold and cheating on his girlfriend Courtney with mutual friend Gwen. While Harold and Courtney are not entirely innocent, Harold leaves his dirty underwear around, and Courtney becomes a controlling and unreasonable girlfriend to Duncan. Duncan would often go too far, and is remorseless for the harm he caused, and would get away with his actions. Duncan's bad actions catch up with him during All-Stars, and his previous characteristics are deconstruction. Courtney moved on from the drama of the last season and is now ignoring him; instead of being happy, Duncan's ego is so big he can't comprehend that Courtney is ignoring him. Duncan spent the season trying to get her attention even though he had previously cheated on her and could not stand her. Gwen, who comes back to make up with Courtney and could not believe Duncan's ego is so big that he can't handle Courtney over him, breaks up with him. Also, throughout the All-Stars season, Duncan is shown to become nicer; Duncan becomes afraid that becoming too nice would ruin his bad-boy rap to the point where he thinks Gwen broke up with him because he was becoming too nice. So Duncan blows up Chris's mansion, and not only does that get him eliminated, but he also is arrested. Duncan was fine with that, thinking that he'll go back to juvie only for Chris to reveal that since he's gotten older, and blowing up a building was an act of domestic terrorism, he will be sent to prison, which frightens him. So because Duncan is so obsessed with his identity as a delinquent and criminal, and his ego is so big, he gets himself sent to jail and destroys his once-close relationship with his girlfriend Gwen, who had no concern for him when he was sent to prison.
* {{Delinquents}}: Fresh out of Juvie.
* DelinquentHair: His [[NonconformistDyedHair green]] fauxhawk.
* {{Determinator}}: He'll stop at nothing to win.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler: In "You Regatta Be Kidding Me", he ends up getting arrested for blowing up Chris' mansion, his bad boy reputation is in ruins, both Courtney and Gwen now hate his guts, and is last seen in prison with the unfortunate implication that he may be [[PrisonRape raped by his cellmate]].]]
* DragonWithAnAgenda: He works with Alejandro starting from "Picnic at Hanging Dork", but doesn't trust him.
* TheDreaded: Most notably back in Island and Action, everyone was terrified of him. Even his best friends, DJ and Geoff.
* DubNameChange: In the Canadian French dub, his name is changed to "Hugo".
* EnfanteTerrible: His bio mentions him racking up suspensions and expulsions...[[EarlyPersonalitySigns pre-kindergarten]].
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: In ''All-Stars'' exclusive clip it's shown that when he's in prison that he is writing a birthday letter to his mother.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: As much as he enjoys being a bad guy, even Duncan is disgusted with the way how Chris or the antagonists plays.
** Knowing he once lost his own pet and didn't want DJ to go through the same, he actually helped DJ get his bunny back to him.
** He's the one to alert Chef that Harold is too sick to continue the challenge after Harold throws up mud.
** Looked quite pissed when Trent was thought to have cheated on Gwen with Heather and voted him off for it.
** Called out Heather for her betrayal of Lindsay, which he described as "cold". When Heather retorted that he had no room to talk because "all [he did] was go around scaring the crap out of everyone," his response was [[AtLeastIAdmitIt "At least I'm straight with people!"]]
** Was not happy to see Alejandro throw Cody to the sharks.
** He also refused to fight a defenseless bird.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Downplayed. He believes that his heroic status in ''All-Stars'' is the reason why Gwen dumped him.
* EvilGenius: He's the master of building complex things with ease. Even [[{{Jerkass}} Heather]] complimented him for being one.
* EvilVersusEvil: When against Chris or the season's ArcVillain, he is the LesserOfTwoEvils since he still has standards that he would not cross.
* ExactWords: In "Basic Straining", Chef makes the campers write 300-word essays about how much they love him. When he picks up Duncan's, it reads, "I love Master Chief Hatchet, because he is very, very, very, very, very, very..."
-->'''Chef Hatchet:''' This is just one sentence with five pages of "verys" in between!
-->'''Duncan:''' It's 300 words exactly! You can count them if you want.
* ExhaustedEyeBags: In "The Big Sleep" during the stay-awake challenge, and in "Top Dog", after staying up all night listening to Courtney bug him about the behavioral contract she wrote for him to read.
* FaceRealization: When tries to do bad deeds in "You Regatta Be Kidding Me", he ends up doing good deeds. He tries to subvert this as hard as he can by blowing up Chris' lakeside mansion.
* FatalFlaw: His inability to accept the good parts of himself leads to his SanitySlippage and arrest in ''All Stars''.
* {{Flanderization}}: ''All-Stars'' takes his [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold heart of gold]] and exaggerates it to the point where Duncan finds himself unable to stop being nice.
* ForTheEvulz: Mainly does bad things for fun.
* TheGadfly: He sometimes does things just to get under the others' skin, like when he told the Killer Bass a scary campfire story about a serial killer with a hook and then scared them by pulling out a hook hand from behind his back.
-->'''Courtney:''' Duncan! That was so not funny!!
-->'''Duncan:''' Oh, yes it was! I just wish it was all on camera! Oh, wait...it is!
* GenreSavvy: Serves him well in ''Action,'' especially when the movie genre is a sort of horror or monster movie. Duncan is also one of the more difficult characters to be manipulated.
* GodzillaThreshold: In "Dodgebrawl", he sleeps out the dodgeball game due to being exhausted from the previous challenge, warning his team that if they wake him up, it'll be the last thing they do. They leave him alone for most of the game and only wake him up when it looks like they're about to lose for the third time in a row.
* GoodHairEvilHair: His soul patch fits his NobleDemon role.
* {{Goth}}: Of the abrasive, sarcastic, and punkish type.
* GracefulLoser: He takes being OutGambitted by Alejandro and Heather surprisingly well. He's also fine with his elimination in Total Drama Island.
* GreenAndMean: His DelinquentHair is this.
* GroinAttack: Falls victim to it quite regularly, mainly from Courtney, who once nailed him in the nuts with a ''guitar.''
* GuileHero: He relies on his wit, street smarts, and tactics from juvie to win challenges.
* HairTriggerTemper: Duncan is super aggressive, moody and prone to violence, not a person to mess with.
* HandsomeLech: He winks at the girls in "Brunch of Disgustingness" and frequently uses pet names for the ones he finds attractive, including "princess", "sweetheart", "honey", and "darling".
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: He can be your ally or your worst enemy at times.
* HenpeckedHusband: During ''Action,'' he pretty much rolls over and lets Courtney do whatever she wants to him, [[spoiler:until he has enough and votes her off in the third-to-last episode]].
-->'''Leshawna:''' Duncan likes to think he's a bad boy, but when Courtney's there, she basically drags him around by his eyebrow ring.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He acts in an evil and callous manner, but he's a nice person beneath the machismo. His TDI biography claims that the social workers who have counseled him say that under all that bravado lies a misguided youth with a big, gooey heart.
* HiddenDepths: Action really did reveal a few things about Duncan:
** Revealed to be an extremely talented actor in ''Action''. Also, Courtney thinks he has a great singing voice.
** In "Full Metal Drama", he reveals that he always wanted to be a marine, on account of their tough reputation, awesome outfits, and their war cry. Given how his family is in the police force, him wanting to be a marine might just be in his blood in a sense.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The huge guy to Beth, the other finalist in Season 2's tiny girl.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** In the series premiere, he calls Ezekiel out for his sexist comments by saying that he has a lot to learn from the real world, even though, as a criminal delinquent, Duncan is in no position to refer to himself as a perfect role model for Ezekiel.
*** Furthermore, if we assume Duncan voted Ezekiel off in the premiere for the sake of explaining how Courtney survived the bottom two if there were five girls and six boys, Duncan calling him out for saying that is ironic given how Duncan makes occasional sexist comments towards Courtney and other contestants in later episodes.
** In ''Island'', he calls out Trent when he appears to be cheating on Gwen with Heather and votes him off. Yet, in ''World Tour'', he has no problem kissing Gwen behind Courtney's back.
** Also in ''Island'', his aforementioned "At least I'm straight with people" but in ''World Tour'' he claims that "Faking sadness is a gift" thus disproving the previous statement.
** A more blatant example in "The Princess Pride" where he steals the air kiss that Courtney gave to Harold, but when Justin steals the air kiss meant for him, he says this was uncool of Justin. Harold calls him out over this.
** In ''World Tour,'' he says about Courtney, "She doesn't have any [loyalty]! Trust a guy who's tried!" This coming from the same guy who kissed another girl behind her back. Though to be fair, he could be referring to when Courtney almost kissed Justin in ''Action'', or to the time when she abandoned him right after he wrestled an alligator for them.
* IconicItem: His knife and, to a lesser extent, his lighter and hook hand.
* IndyPloy: If there's one thing Duncan is good at, it is coming up with creative solutions on the fly.
* JerkassToOne: Of the "Crueler to One" variety. While he's regularly rude and insensitive to others, Harold is the only one he goes out of his way to torment, especially in ''Action''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Mostly in ''Island'', but still shows shades of this afterwards, mainly to Gwen. His heart of gold is amped up in ''All-Stars'' once he's put on the Heroic Hamsters, especially focused on in the episode "No One Eggspects The Spanish Opposition", where he tries to assure a mother bird that he's only borrowing her egg and tears up after the bird starts crying. It also plays an important role in "Suckers Punched", where he refuses to fight the same bird because he doesn't want to injure something so innocent. He tries to move away from this by blowing up Chris' cottage with dynamite but this gets him arrested, disqualified, and thrown in a big boy jail.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In ''Basic Straining'', he seems to [[BitchInSheepsClothing show remorse for bullying Harold]] throughout the entire episode and even offers him some apple juice to make up for it, but when Harold drinks and spits it out he reveals it's just kitchen grease, he gets called out by ''Courtney'' of all people for this.
* KarmicButtMonkey: Usually, this comes in the form of a GroinAttack, courtesy of Courtney. In ''All-Stars'', misfortune befalls him during his entire run.
* KnightInSourArmor: He doesn't like to be called a hero and tries to push it off to reclaim his evil status, but he gets heroic at the end of the day.
* KubrickStare: His default expression.
* LackOfEmpathy: Duncan has pulled this trope. When Leshawna got voted off in "[[Recap/TotalDramaSuperHerold Super Hero-ld]]", Duncan just kicks Harold instead of thanking him for helping the guys alliance or apologizing to him for [Harold's] loss. Later on in "[[Recap/TotalDramaRockNRule Rock n' Rule]]", Duncan was the only person laughing at Lindsay's mistake in voting herself off.
* TheLancer: While Duncan typically steers away from the leader spot as he deems it too much effort, he usually remains a ReasonableAuthorityFigure and a {{foil}} to the proper leader.
** In the first season, he is the most vocal member of the Killer Bass against Courtney's so-called leadership over their team, constantly questioning her orders. Arguably, Duncan is right as Courtney fails to lead her team properly many times and in episodes such as "Dodgebrawl", Duncan is required to step up in order for the team to gain the upper hand. Furthermore, Duncan at least tries to be civil with the team while Courtney never attempts to form any rapport with the others aside from Bridgette.
** Also in ''Island'', after the teams are split into boys and girls, while Geoff is the official leader, Duncan holds the most say in the Guys Alliance and overturns many of Geoff's decisions.
** In ''Action'', he is the first person Gwen chose to be on her team and is pretty much the best player, especially when Gwen is being distracted by her relationship with Trent. Once Gwen is eliminated, he more or less replaced her as leader, with even Leshawna and Heather allowing him to take the lead.
** On Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot. He takes up this mantle in ''World Tour'' once Noah is eliminated ([[SixthRanger coincidentally in the same episode he arrives]]), and becomes Alejandro's new biggest threat as well as the team's NumberTwo.
* LargeHam: At times. "It's a psycho with a CHAINSAW AND A HOOOOOKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
* LaserGuidedKarma: Duncan does suffer from plenty of pain and misfortune, often tied to Courtney. In All-Stars, however, Duncan becomes the season's biggest punching bag.
* LastOfHisKind: The last Killer Bass member remaining in Season 1 and the last Screaming Gaffer member remaining in season 2.
* TheLeader: Following Gwen's elimination in ''Action'', he pretty much becomes the new leader of the Screaming Gaffers, being the team's key player in winning most of the challenges.
* LeanAndMean: Has a very thin body, but it really depends on the episode of his {{jerkass}}ery varying.
* LesserOfTwoEvils: He always makes it to the final 5 of the first three seasons, and hence will always be this when put alongside the season's particular ArcVillain.
* LonersAreFreaks: He prefers for others to leave him alone unless it serves his interests. Duncan is also one of the more violent and intimidating characters.
* LovableRogue: He's snarky, destructive, law-breaking, shady, reckless, thieving and proud of being evil, but he keeps a social status and is a nice person if you earn his respect.
* ManipulativeBastard: Duncan is not above cheating to win, though he doesn't tend to be a [[FauxAffablyEvil silent manipulator]].
* ManlyTears: He tears up when [[spoiler: the Heroic Hamsters welcome him to their team]] and when he's forced to take an egg away from its mother bird.
* MistakenForCheating: Courtney accuses him of having cheated on her with Gwen in ''Action'' when he didn't. In ''World Tour'' he cheats on her for real.
* MysteriousPast:
** It's unknown what he did to get himself in juvie, he supposedly confesses off-screen to Heather, Gwen and Owen but we never get to hear it.
** In his video log from his parents, it appears his crime was doing a "Happy Nude Year" stunt, selling his father's hairpieces as pets, and holding a pool party at City Hall fountain.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: In the past, he was arrested for a "Happy Nude Year" stunt.
* NeverMyFault: In "3:10 to Crazytown", Duncan mentions that he picks on Harold because of [[Recap/TotalDramaBasicStraining how Harold got Courtney booted]]. Duncan did bully Harold to the extent that Courtney got eliminated as revenge.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween:
** Out of the DJ-Duncan-Geoff friendship, he's the mean to DJ's nice and Geoff's in-between.
** In terms of the love triangle mess in season 3, he is the in-between to Gwen's nice and Courtney's mean.
** Out of the final three members of Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot, he's the in-between to Owen's nice and Alejandro's mean.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: In ''All-Stars'', he just can't stop being nice; taken especially far in "You Regatta Be Kidding Me" where every one of his attempts to appear villainous gets interpreted as a good deed. He even literally fixes Chef's rundown jeep while trying to drive it into the ocean.
* NicenessDenial: He has shown himself to do good deeds towards the ones he's closest to, such as when he got DJ a new bunny. Courtney says that it was something very nice of him to do, followed by Duncan despertly trying to deny that it was so.
* TheNicknamer: He gives rude nicknames to almost every contestant, although some become InsultOfEndearment over time.
* NoBadassToHisValet: He's brooding, intimidating and in the earlier seasons, everyone was frightened of him. Courtney, however, makes everyone forget about that. Even himself.
* NobleDemon: He's mean, arrogant, capricious, and crude, but he always keeps his word, is [[VillainsNeverLie straight with people]] (by his own admission), and is loyal to the friends he makes, over the series, even if he didn't exactly come to make friends.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: Roguish to Harold and Alejandro's Noble. Although played with in the case of Alejandro, as he is more villainous.
* NominalHero: When he is first introduced in ''Island''. As he has no problem working alongside the more heroic characters, but keep in mind he was thrown into juvie for a reason. See AntiHero above.
* NonGameplayElimination: In ''All Stars'', he is taken out of the competition and put under arrest for destroying Chris's mansion.
* OddFriendship: Believe it or not, Duncan is good friends with people like [[NiceGuy DJ, Geoff, Owen, Beth and Zoey]], all whom are the polar opposite of him.
* OfficialCouple: With Courtney in the first, second and first half of the third season. Later with Gwen in the second half of the third season, fourth and fifth season until "Moon Madness".
* OppositesAttract: With Courtney. He is a snarky, rebellious, rude, laid-back bully. She is an uptight, over-achieving, irritable goody-two shoes. Deconstructed as their relationship fell apart.
* PercussivePickpocket: In "Are We There Yeti?" Duncan somehow manages to swipe night vision goggles off of Chef while pretending to grovel.
* PerpetualFrowner: He isn't exactly one to be smiling a lot.
* PetTheDog: Rare but Duncan has these moments which is what makes him less villainous when compare to the likes of Heather, Courtney, Alejandro and Mal.
** His friendship with DJ in general, despite their difference in personality. In the second episode, though Duncan points out DJ did cost their team the first challenge, Duncan redeems him over Courtney because DJ's strength will be helpful in the future. He also helped DJ to find another bunny after Geoff loses the first one.
** Is the only one to not be mad at Bridgette for burning the Bass' tent down in "The Sucky Outdoors", and even defends her when Courtney yells at her for it.
** Though Duncan finds pleasure in bullying Harold, he also sometimes shows respect for him during challenges and is even willing to end their feud had it not for Owen's interference.
** Shows concern for Chef alongside Beth when they notice he's acting differently in "Mutiny on the Soundstage", and later saves Beth from a toilet launched at her by Chris despite competing against her.
** Gwen is practically his MoralityPet and he has helped her in many situations, even once TakingTheBullet for her.
** Sure he laughs at Scott's misfortune but Duncan still helps him to get back up.
* PlotArmor: At the merge in season 2, everyone else team up to vote off Duncan since their hated enemy Courtney had immunity that night. Their plan to eliminate Duncan to infuriate Courtney would fail because of manipulation[[note]](Courtney managed to change Harold's vote by using flattery and intimidation.)[[/note]] (Leshawna's elimination) and sheer luck (more infamously Lindsay's elimination).
* ThePrankster: Can usually be found pulling these on Harold. Such as putting his hand in water while he's sleeping or putting hot sauce in his underwear.
* PragmaticHero: He tries to pass himself off as a villain but underneath it all he's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. See AntiHero above.
* PrisonRape: Implied to happen when he was imprisoned, after his elimination in ''All-Stars'', when he was writing a note to his mother and his cellmate gave him a creepy smile.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: His final fate.
* PyroManiac: Check the quote at the top of his character profile.
* RageQuit: In the first episode of ''World Tour'', Duncan becomes fed up that the two people he partnered with (Courtney and Gwen) can't stop arguing throughout the challenge while under the hot sun. He finally loses his patience when Chris demands them to sing another song, which Duncan strongly opposes, and angrily quits the season.
* RedemptionRejection: After being switched over to the Heroic Hamsters [[TookALevelInKindness he takes several levels in kindness]]. Accepting an apple from Zoey, helping Scott up, refusing to take an egg from a birdy and in the next episode refusing to fight said bird. Which horrifies him, wanting to regain his bad boy reputation he takes drastic measures and blows up Chris's cottage (mansion).
* RedOniBlueOni:
** The blue to Owen's red.
** He's also the red to Alejandro's blue when they team up in ''World Tour''
* RelationshipRevolvingDoor: He has an on-again-off-again relationship with Courtney, throughout ''Island'' and ''Action'', until ''World Tour'' where he becomes more interested in Gwen and ends up forming a love triangle, causing animosity with Courtney.
* RelationshipUpgrade: With Gwen until "Moon Madness" in ''All-Stars''.
* RememberTheNewGuy: A delayed version of this occurs in ''All-Stars''. Once he's forced to switch over to the Heroes team, he starts to notice that Mike sounds familiar and after a couple of episodes, realizes that he knows Mike from juvie as Mal when he hears him whistling "In the Hall of the Mountain King." However, Mike/Mal doesn't recognize Duncan since he steered clear of him in juvie.
* RiddleForTheAges: What did he go to juvie for, and why is he afraid of Celine Dion music store standees?
* SanitySlippage: Suffered this in ''All-Stars'' when he realizes how nice he's turning.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: He refuses to participate in singing and bails in the first episode of ''World Tour'' [[HesBack only to return in "I See London..."]], this time not letting his pride hold him back.
-->'''Duncan''': Girls sing, little birdies sing...Duncans do ''not'' sing!
* SecondLove: He falls in love with Gwen after falling in love with Courtney, and likewise, she falls in love with him after falling in love with Trent. [[spoiler:It doesn't last; they break up after Gwen learns that Duncan still has feelings for Courtney]].
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Accepting an apple from Zoey, which marks him as warming up to the other contestants.
* SecurityBlanket: The audio of the "TDA Caught on Tape" clip reveals that Duncan has a blankie named Mr. Bumblebottom. Duncan considers it the best thing he ever has stolen.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan:
** The manly man to DJ and Geoff's sensitive guys.
** He's also the manly man to Alejandro, Owen, and Trent's sensitive guys.
* SixthRanger: On Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot and the Heroic Hamsters.
* SkewedPriorities: {{Downplayed}} and {{Deconstructed}} in ''All-Stars''. Although Duncan is determined to stop Mal, he also wanted to prove he was still a bad boy, so he blew up Chris's "[[InsistentTerminology cottage]]", which got him booted from the competition and sent to jail.
* SlapSlapKiss: With Courtney in ''Island'' and ''Action''. He ends this in ''World Tour''.
* SlasherSmile: Anytime he gets a weapon in his hands, expect one. Especially when he picks up a chainsaw to [[ExaggeratedTrope catch a raccoon]].
* SoleSurvivor: Duncan is not only the last member of the Killer Bass and the Screaming Gaffers in the seasons the teams were formed, but he was also the last former Killer Bass in the first three seasons. The first season where Duncan is not the last Killer Bass in the game was ''All-Stars''.
* SpikesOfVillainy: His spiked collar, which he never takes off even when he goes to sleep.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: He is one of ''the'' most focused-on contestants in the series, making it to the merge in ''every'' season he competes in. He only goes OutOfFocus during the first half of ''World Tour'', in all but one episode of ''Revenge of the Island'', all of ''Pahkitew Island'', and all of ''The Ridonculous Race''.
* StickyFingers: He's a career criminal, so of course he'll steal anything at the first opportunity. He swipes a mug in "Who Can You Trust?" and pickpockets a pair of night vision goggles from Chef in "Are We There Yeti?"
* StreetSmart: Being a delinquent, he's very crafty and tactical throughout the competition.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: In his video message from home, it's shown that his father also has black hair and a square jaw, while his mother also has cyan eyes like him.
* SuperStrength: He's beaten an alligator in "Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island", and in " Haute camp-ture", DJ mentions that he's seen Duncan win a fight with a bear.
* SympatheticAdulterer: Considering the [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale way]] [[{{Tsundere}} Courtney]] treated him, it's no surprise he eventually got sick of it and left her for Gwen.
* TakingTheBullet: In "Saving Private Leechball", he took a leech fired by Cameron that was mend for Gwen. This action is deemed heroic by Chris, who transfers Duncan to the Heroic Hamsters Hamsters.
* TokenEvilTeammate: In ''Island''. Subverted in ''All-Stars'' when he gets put on the Heroic Hamsters when Mal returns.
* TookALevelInKindness: He becomes much nicer over the course of ''All-Stars'', much to his horror. Over the course of it, he goes back and forth between being nice and trying to hide that.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In ''World Tour'' he went from a JerkWithAHeartOfGold to a straight up {{Jerkass}}. He also made several deliberate attempts at this over the course of ''All-Stars'', because his [[TookALevelInKindness taking a level in kindness]] caused everyone to label him a softy. Unfortunately, almost all of those attempts ended up making him seem even nicer [[spoiler:except for his last attempt, where he blew up Chris's cottage...[[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor which got him arrested and sent to jail instead of juvie, along with being booted from the competition]].]]
* TooKinkyToTorture: Often throughout his relationship with Courtney, although he seemed to draw the line at {{Groin Attack}}s.
* TopHeavyGuy: His legs are less than a ''third'' of his total height. Even though he's actually rather short, his elongated torso means he towers over most of the other characters when they're all sitting.
* ToughSpikesAndStuds: This is one delinquent who never takes off his spiked collar.
* TroubledButCute: He is a brooding juvenile delinquent with a long rap sheet, but Gwen and Courtney find him attractive.
* {{Tsundere}}: He is this over the course of the series as he acts like a jerk a few seconds on entering Island and threatened to pierce Noah's lip. He bullies Harold a lot as well. His nice side first shows when he gets DJ a new bunny after Geoff accidentally loses DJ's old one. He reverts back to aggressive in Action as he punches a seagull in the face in Action but his relationship with Harold slightly improved and he started a good friendship with Beth. He also acted as a motherly figure towards DJ, Harold, and Justin as shown in a hidden clip in the finale when he helps all of them sleep better by placing teddy bears and adjusting sleep masks. His status as this trope fully blows over when he takes a hit for Gwen in the leech challenge and is forced to switch to the heroes team and he later cries over taking an innocent bird's egg.
* UnaffectedBySpice: In "Who Can You Trust?", during the rock climbing challenge, Chris shoots him with a squirt gun full of habanero pepper sauce, but Duncan just swallows it and asks, "Is that the best you can do?"
* VillainWithGoodPublicity:
** Despite his negative attitude, Duncan has a pretty easy time to gain allies that he even ends up befriending, and it also usually happens without him showing to these people that he has a HiddenHeartOfGold. It pays off for him as he ends up making it to the top 5 in the first three seasons, even winning ''Action'' in his ending. Even in ''World Tour'', while Duncan cheated on Courtney for Gwen, he doesn't get much flack from anyone other than Courtney herself and Tyler.
** Speaking of him winning ''Action'', real world example was that when Creator/CartoonNetwork conducted a public vote, Duncan ended up winning the vote in a CurbStompBattle with 77%, beating [[NiceGirl Beth's]] 23%.
* VitriolicBestBuds: As much as Duncan can't stand Heather and Harold (and the feeling is mutual) there are moments where he ends up being their ally, especially in Action since they were on the same team.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: In ''Island'', he ends up developing a friendship with Leshawna in "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon". However, this newfound friendship deteriorates in ''Action'' due to Duncan constantly picking on Harold (whom Leshawna as a soft spot for) and completely ends due to Leshawna fake crying to get the spa reward and insulting everyone in doing so which leads both of them to try and vote each other off in "Super Haro-ld".
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: His parents (both police officers, according to his character bio) are, unsurprisingly, not happy that he's decided to be a career criminal at 16.
-->'''Duncan's Dad:''' ''(after listing a number of his crimes)'' Come to think of it, ''do'' we love you?\\
'''Duncan's Mom:''' That's a terrible thing to say!\\
'''Duncan's Dad:''' Well, the boy's a ''criminal''!\\
'''Duncan's Mom:''' That hairpiece [of yours] is what's criminal.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He is afraid of Céline Dion music store standees.
* WildCard: He frequently drifts between phases of hero and villain, but it's very difficult to place where he ends up at any given time.
* TheWorfEffect: When the show needs to either show how badass someone is (Courtney) or how someone has TookALevelInBadass (Harold, Cody) the first stop seems to be beating up Duncan.
* WouldHitAGirl: He claims this in ''Action'', although he's beaten too quickly to prove it. He also throws a shoe at Courtney in an exclusive clip from "Hawaiian Style".
* WrongGenreSavvy: Originally believed that manipulative Heather was responsible for the rigged vote that got Courtney voted off. He finds out later that it was Harold.[[/folder]]
