    Michael McNamara
A former officer in the British Royal Navy, as well as a former fencing instructor, currently seeking a new beginning in Kingston, Jamaica.

  • Alliterative Name: Michael McNamara
  • Badass Bookworm: He's well-read, and he's been making a living as a fencing instructor since his expulsion from the navy.
  • Brave Scot: Not only is McNamara a native of Edinburgh, but the Act of Union that united England and Scotland is a key part of his backstory.
  • Charles Atlas Super Power: Although he certainly had a knack for the sword, it was through extensive training and combat experience that he mastered it.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: It doesn't matter whether your hassling his innkeeper or plotting the deaths of thousands - when someone is in trouble, his first instinct is always to come to their rescue.
  • Cool Sword: McNamara's sword of choice is a colichemarde, which is out of fashion but ideal for some of the fights he finds himself in.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: After his expulsion from the navy.
  • Honor Before Reason: Averted during the final duel with Captain Reynard - he's willing to team up with Catalina to fight him two-on-one.
  • Master Swordsman: Not only was he an excellent student, but he's spent a lot of time teaching others how to fence, and he's got plenty of combat experience.
  • Not So Above It All: For all his talk about being wary of blind loyalty and trust, he never once questions Reynard's motives - something he gets called out on hard later in the book.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: He really seems to enjoy bantering with Catalina and Captain Reynard.

Dona Catalina Moore Viuda de Caldeira
  • Circus Brat: Catalina's parents were both actors, and she grew up with a love of theater. The beautiful costumes she saw on stage inspired her to want to take up the needle so she could make clothes like that. It also triggered her interest in swordplay.
  • Lady of War: Classy, elegant, well-spoken, nearly a match for McNamara with a blade, and able to outfence most of Reynard's mooks. According to Word of God, the only reason she's not equal to the guys is less training and no combat experience. Otherwise, she'd easily surpass them.
  • Rape as Backstory: Subverted, as she was never sexually assaulted by any character. However, before the events of the book, a false assumption she'd been raped by her husband's killer led to some ugly rumors about her, and her eventual ostracization from Portugese society.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: She really enjoys bantering with McNamara.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Less extreme than most examples, but she's had some rough patches. Her parents died, she grew up discriminated against for her half-English heritage, her beloved husband was murdered, and some ugly rumors were spread about her after his death that prompted her to leave Portugal. And then the next man she finds love with, Captain Reynard, is just using her as a pawn in his grand scheme.

     Captain Stephen Reynard
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: In addition to being a cunning strategist and manipulator, Reynard is also a highly skilled swordsman who outfences Michael McNamara, Captain Brian Lancaster, and Captain Fairbanks (the last of those off-screen.) It takes both McNamara and Catalina to put him down for good.
  • Confusion Fu: Reynard's weapon of choice is a schiavona, which attacks and blocks from odd angles that can throw off opponents. (This is a case of Truth in Television, as the schiavona style really does come over like this.)
  • Death Glare: And quite a withering one too, when he's angry enough.
  • No Name Given: "Stephen Reynard" is an alias. His true name is never revealed.
  • Romancing the Widow: How Reynard won Catalina's heart.

The Crew of the Predator

     Niccolo "Nick" Sabatini
  • The Dragon: He's served as this to Captain Reynard throughout his pirate career, and is the only one unafraid to back-talk to him when necessary.
