Not what that trope means.

* DecoyAntagonist: Initially, he appears to be be the driving force behind the events of ''The Phantom Menace''. It quickly becomes clear that he's just a patsy for Palpatine while Darth Maul serves as the [[TheHeavy most difficult obstacle]] for the Jedi.

Added DiffLines:

* YouDontLookLikeYou: In ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'', he looks and sounds different from the preceding and following theatrical films. This is because the mask for Haako was lost after the filming of ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'', so they used the mask for Daultay Dofine instead. Because of the drastically different appearance, the Neimoidian seen with Nute Gunray on Geonosis was originally supposed to be Lott Dod, then because he didn't resemble Dod or sound like him, Lucasfilm renamed the character Gilramos Libkath... then for some reason chucked ''that'' and said it was Rune Haako, in open defiance of all evidence to the contrary.

* {{Greed}}: His main motivation in aligning with the Sith is the promise of wealth.

to:

* EvilLaugh: Delivers a cruel chuckle in ''Lair of Grevious'' when his Jedi pursuers, consisting of Kit Fitso and his former Padawan Nahdar Vebb, have stumbled into General Grevious' lair on Vassek 3 and found out he wasn't there all along.
-->'''Gunray:''' You have nothing, Jedi fools! I welcome you to your doom! Hahahahaha!
* {{Greed}}: His main motivation in aligning with the Sith is the promise of wealth. He even keeps demanding that Cad Bane pay him back after losing parts of the Trade Federation's fleet sent to him by Sidious.

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: At the end of ''The Phantom Menace'', he's arrested and tried four times for the invasion of Naboo, but the fact that he's still Trade Federation Viceroy by ''Attack of the Clones'' means he got off scott free. In ''The Clone Wars'', he is captured by the Republic on Rodia, only to be liberated by Asajj Ventress en route to Coruscant for trial. Karma eventually does catch up to him in ''Revenge of the Sith'', where Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader finally butchers him along with the rest of the Separatist leaders.

Added DiffLines:

* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: The Trade Federation is based off of the real world British East India Company and Dutch East India Company, both historical trading companies who were known for having their own private armies and fleets, and remembered for their wars against various indigenous groups, most notably on the Indian subcontinent. Not coincidentally, the people of Naboo have names taken from Sanskrit, an ancient and classical Indian language - thus furthering the parallels between the Trade Federation and the aforementioned trading companies.

* AlasPoorVillain: Downplayed in canon. When Darth Vader is sent to slaughter him as part of Palpatine's YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness on the Separatist Council, Gunray is completely surprised at the betrayal and feebly ''begs'' for mercy before being brutally cut down. However because he doesn't have the doubts and regrets along with the complex history with Palpatine he had in ''Legends'', he comes off as much more of a cowardly AssholeVictim.

* AdaptationalJerkass: In ''Legends'' (as presented in the ''Literature/DarthPlagueis'' novel), the Trade Federation actually started out with semi-legitimate reasons to distrust the Republic and amass their own army: their trading fleets were constantly besieged by pirates and terrorists (secretly moved by Plagueis and Sidious, which the Federation obviously didn't know), and the Republic government led by Chancellor Valorum was proving utterly unable to protect them due to political corruption and infighting about trade and taxation (again, fueled by Plagueis and Sidious), which Sidious later exploited to excite the Neimoidians' greed and attract them to the Separatist Alliance. None of the aforementioned traits from ''Legends'' get included into the canon, which effectively turns the canon version of the Trade Federation into a group of petty warmongers from beginning to end.
** However, ''ComicBook/DarthMaul'' recanonizes the pirate attacks, though it's after they've allied themselves with Sidious.
