Star Defenders

    Rosa Masahiro/Sola

Rosa Masahiro/Sola

The main protagonist of the story. A peppy and excitable girl from the town of New Temple, who’s been raising her younger siblings on her own ever since the death of their mother. After being abducted by aliens she accidentally absorbs a Neural Nexus, which unlocks in her powerful psychic powers. Donning the name Sola she decides to become a hero and protect her hometown from the alien threat.
  • Action Girl: With her new powers, Rosa can hold her own in a fight.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Her greatest character flaw, particularly during the first arc, where her tendency to jump head first into action alone at the first sign of danger leaves her drained after multiple encounters in a row.
  • The Nicknamer: Most of the Agents have gotten their “villain” names straight from her.
  • Promoted to Parent: Since the death of her mother (with her father already being dead/absent), she is the one looking after her siblings.

    Alice Fujisaki/Luna

Alice Fujisaki/Luna

Rosa’s best friend since childhood. Shy and timid girl who spends most her time learning to become the heiress her mother wants her to be. After being caught up in an Agent attack and helping Sola in battles she's able to stand up to her abusive mother. After confessing her love to Rosa in a moment of distress she’s able to take some of her powers and transform into a hero herself. As Luna her powers are based on the mages of her favorite RPGs.

    Marisa Kei/Mari Sa’Kei

Marisa Kei/Mari Sa’Kei/Pandaemonia

The student council president at Rosa’s school. Despite her charismatic appearance and being beloved by all she's never seen outside of school. Her real identity is the Locrian Mari Sa’Kei, a Class-2 Investigator of the Galactic Federation, who’s been working undercover to expose the machinations of Anathema, whom she has a personal grudge against. She supports Sola in the fight against the evil aliens with her laser gun marksmanship and limited psychic abilities of her own.

    Phoebe Maekawa

Phoebe Maekawa/Night Mary

A shy and introverted trans girl who is most noteworthy for her wild, unkempt hair and her preference to wear heavy clothing even in the desert heat. Having been ashamed of her body, she sheltered herself away and rather indulged in nerdy hobbies. This changed when Hilda and Sara decided to reach out to her and formed a friendship that slowly allows her to come out of her shell.

Night Mary is the Agent Phoebe is turned into by Manios. Going by the false belief Phoebe’s phobia of clowns means them to be powerful warriors, Night Mary can see and take on the shape of her opponent's biggest fears.

    Hilda Hirano

Hilda Hirano/DJ Heartbeat/Supernova

Tall, tan and blond, Hilda Hirano is the face of New Temple’s cheer squad. She hates being seen as vapid eye-candy though and is wary of the community and particularly her father pushing her into being an icon of beauty and sexuality. With her strong will and determination she rather wishes to pursue her own path in life through fitness and art.

DJ Heartbeat is the Agent Anathema turn Hilda into. Twisted by her desire to be seen as her true self and not the role the town forces her into, the songs she sings become of dominance and despair and have the power to control everyone listening to them.

    Sara Chokichi

Sara Chokichi/Aira/Nemesis/Nebula

A spry, energetic and constantly optimistic girl, who’s rarely seen leaving the side of her best friend and crush Hilda. Rarely lacking a smile on her face she always tries to be a positive force in the lives of those she holds dear. Having been abandoned by her birth parents when she was young, she was found and adopted by the rich Chokichi family, though it left her with a habit of quickly latching onto people and abandonment issues.

Airis is the Agent Anathema turned her into. A cyber fair, she turns those close to her into cybernetic knights she can guide to happiness, but also to protect her.
  • Stepford Smiler: One of her biggest flaws is her habit of hiding her own personal issues to not burden her friends and only focus on helping them.

    01/Lily Masahiro

01/Lily Masahiro

An alien girl solely referred to as Mental Manipulation Case Study 01 that's being held as a mind-controlled slave by Anathema for a side project. After learning of her existence the Star Defenders manage to successfully rescue her from their clutches and now hide her in New Temple. Due to the experiments her only remaining memory is of Anathema being responsible for her parents’ disappearance.

She is given the identity of Rosa’s made-up cousin Lily Masahiro and for her human disguise she chooses a form that combines traits of each of her three saviors. Now free she proves herself to be a kind soul who enjoys the simple things in life, though also wants to make herself useful, including when villains attack. Her singing has interesting effects on those suffering from mind-control, but also Rosa herself.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Anathema subjected her to so many mind-control experiments that it was noted her eyes were starting to turn into spirals on their own.

    Aurora Matoi

Aurora Matoi

A member of New Temple High’s theater club. A gentle and kind girl, who gets roped in with the Star Defenders by accident when trying to evade mysterious suited men shadowing her. She quickly grows a close bond with Marisa, describing her as her knight that protects her from the dark voices tormenting her. She suffers from a mysterious chronic chest pain.

Relatives

    Ricardo Masahiro

Ricardo Masahiro/Oblivion

Rosa’s younger but more mature brother. A star striker in New Temple High’s soccer team, who dreams of leaving the town behind one day. He constantly worries about Rosa and wishes she would allow him to take over some of her responsibilities.

His frustrations reach their boiling point when Anathema abduct him and twist his anger to transform him into Officer Fifth Class Oblivion. A dark copy of Sola they ensnare the town in their psychic thorns and fill its inhabitants with the same rage they feel against Rosa. By admitting her feelings Rosa is able to bring Ricardo’s mind back to the forefront, though it leaves him in a physically female body and a voice in his head that wants to help him.
