     Victoire de Marsanne 
  • Decoy Protagonist: Victoire and the Princess of Savoy is about the Princess of Savoy. Victoire herself doesn’t have much of a story outside of her friendship with her.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: In a less tortured version than the usual, Isabeau and charity work as the friend, and Marie-Adélaïde and the court as the idol. She chooses the idol, at least momentarily.
  • Lady-In-Waiting: To the Duchess of Burgundy, after her wedding.
  • Love Triangle: While she is a Celibate Hero for most of her book, she takes a liking to both Philippe d’Elbœuf and François d’Aumale. There is no resolution and she just decides to see what happens in the future. Also...
  • Oblivious to Love: While she is aware of the effect she has on some gentlemen of the court, she has no idea that Gilles, her own friend's brother, is in love with her.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her sickness shortly after arriving in Saint-Cyr distracts everyone in the infirmary, allowing Gertrude to steal the hemlock she used to poison Madame de Crécy.

  • Doting Parent: He is distant and most often away, but he does dote on his daughters and knows how to show them his love, even though he never really says it.
  • Kissing Cousins: He and his wife are second cousins.
  • The Mistress: He keeps one, the countess di Verrua, and shuns his wife.

  • Doting Grandparent: Now that she has left politics, she dedicates her time to her gardens and her granddaughers.
  • Red Baron: Known to the people of Savoy as ‘’Madame Royale’’.

The Duchess of Lude, the Countess of Mailly, the Marchioness of Dangeau, the Marchioness du Châtelet, Madame de Roussy and Madame de Montgon
  • Cool Old Lady: Madame de Lude has a hard time keeping up with her charge, but she likes her and the energy she brings to the aging court, and is among the few to make Victoire feel welcome in her household.
  • The Bully: Roussy and Montgon, the youngest of the group, don’t take kindly to Marie-Adélaïde’s favoritism towards Victoire and throw jabs at her about her education and poverty.
  • Historical Domain Character: The first four names were listed at the head of the duchess’s household.
  • The Confidente: Marguerite de La Borde, the duchess’s lady’s maid, becomes this for Victoire.
  • Lady-In-Waiting: They all are, to the Duchess of Burgundy.
