In part, this is to keep them from exploring and learning anything the people controlling the villages don't want them to know, but it's also to keep the {{Terraform}} effect directed outward by forcing their subconscious fears and concerns figuratively and literally in that direction.

* Really700YearsOld / OlderThanTheyLook: She's 267 years old. Apparently, this is a result of being able to regenerate her telomeres.[[note]]As cell division often fails to replicate the entire chromosome, often stopping before the end, telomeres are buffer nitrogen bases found at the end that protect the chromosome from deterioration. Without them, the cell would lose vital pieces of information instead. Because they don't code for any particular amino acid, they are essentially disposable, yet they do run out and research suggests that telomeres running out causes aging on the cellular level.[[/note]]

* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Episode 21 reveals his grand scheme. It turns out that he wants to give the humans a taste of their own medicine and make the ''bakenezumi'' the rulers, not the other way around. How does he do this? Simple: after killing Maria and Mamoru, he abducts their child and raises him to become an Akki. Then, as the Akki wipes out human villages, the hospitals would be kept intact so the armies could abduct human infants (as infants of a vanquished colony are considered spoils) and raise them to become Akkis as well. So even if his original plan fails, Yakomaru would only have to wait until the human children develop PK for him to overrun not just Japan, but Eurasia as a whole and ''quite possibly the world''.]]
** Episode 25 then goes one to reveal that he is motivated to defend his people, rather than a desire for personal power.

Added DiffLines:

* TheJuggernaut: The people of the future have genetic limiters ("Attack Control" and "Death Feedback") which would cause them pain if they even considered killing another human, and ''would'' kill them if they actually tried. Thanks to being raised by queerats, the Fiend's are wired to trigger when they attack queerats. This means that the Fiend can butcher people with impunity, tearing through them like a bullet through Jell-O, and anyone who tries to stop them or even ''defend themselves'' will die in agony as their limiters are triggered.

Added DiffLines:

* WeakWilled: There was a brief HopeSpot during the Fiend's attack when the chants of the priests (who were expert hypnotists) seemed to be affecting it--so Yakomaru destroyed the Temple of Purification, and then the Fiend was unstoppable.
