Grimoire Heart is the second and most powerful member of the Balam Alliance dark guilds. Headed by Hades (a.k.a. Precht Gaebolg, the second master of Fairy Tail), this guild believes the Black Wizard Zeref Dragneel to be in a [[SealedEvilInACan "sleeping" state]] in which he cannot use the full extent of his power. As such, they seek to "awaken" him to bring about the Great Magic World, where wizards may thrive while ordinary humans (i.e., 90% of the world's population) would perish. Their hunt for Zeref leads to them coincidentally crossing paths with Fairy Tail on the Tenrou Island in X784, resulting in a showdown that leaves Grimoire Heart in shambles.

* ArcVillain: The guild is responsible for all the danger in the Tenrou Island arc and Fairy Tail stopping his plans during the S-Class exam is their main mission.

* TheDreaded: They're touted as the most powerful dark guild of the Balam Alliance during the Tenrou Island arc.

* BigBadWannabe: He has all the makings to become the BigBad upon his introduction: immeasurable power and resources, a deeply rooted connection to the protagonists, a hand behind most of the series' major conflicts and being one of the most powerful foes they've faced. However, by the end of the Tenrou Island arc, Zeref emerges as the true BigBad and kills Hades.

* EvilPlan: His plan is to awaken Zeref's power so that Grimoire Heart can bring about the Great Magic World. He ultimately fails at the end of the Tenrou Island arc.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: After Hades has Azuma destroy the Great Tenrou Tree in an effort to drain Fairy Tail's power, the Exceed destroy his ImmortalityInducer and Ultear restores the tree, draining ''his'' own power and allowing Fairy Tail to defeat him. Then, Zeref gets back at Hades for his EvilPlan when he uses his Repent spell on Grimoire Heart's ship. In fact, while most of the ship gets destroyed, Hades is hit ''directly by the spell''.

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: After years of getting away with a lot of evil actions, he finally gets what's coming to him at the conclusion of Grimoire Heart's battle with Fairy Tail on Tenrou Island.

* NoSell: The final battle of the Tenrou Island arc consists of him getting up without a scratch every time he is apparently crushed. This is thanks to his [[ImmortalityInducer "heart"]], and it only stops when [[HoistByHisOwnPetard the "heart" is destroyed]].

* VillainHasAPoint: He refutes Makarov's claim that he was no match for his children, accurately noting they won thanks to outside help (Ultear restoring the Great Tenrou Tree) and [[WorfHadTheFlu his Devil Heart being destroyed]].

* TheDreaded: His own guildmates are intimidated by him, warning Fairy Tail that Tenrou Island will become an uninhabitable wasteland once he decides to step in.

* VillainBall: He has Gildarts on the ropes due to Azuma taking over theTenrou Tree and draining Fairy Tail of their magic, and could easily kill him whenever he pleases. Instead, he just stomps on Gildarts and gloats like an idiot before Erza manages to turn the power back on, allowing Gildarts to get back into the fight.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: In the Tenrou Island arc, he overwhelms Natsu and his friends on Sirius Island, and later he fights toe-to-toe with Gildarts. Eight years later, Natsu becomes strong enough to not only NoSell his gravity magic just like Gildarts, but to also take him down with one shot.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Almost all of the Kin are defeated as a result of having their own magic turned against them in one way or another: Zancrow by his flames, Zoldio by his body snatching, Kain by his doll, Merudy by her sensory link, Azuma by his decision to use the Tenrou Tree's magic, and Rusty Rose by defeating Elfman and allowing him to be used as Bickslow's trump card. Ultear's defeat, meanwhile, is a result of having [[CallBack helped melt Ur's ice back]] in the Sub-Zero Emperor Lyon arc.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: During his fight with Erza, he admits that he's uncomfortable with the underhanded methods of his companions and with his orders to destroy the Tenrou Tree, and the only reason he does so here is that he was ordered to by his master.

* HeroKiller: He doesn't really kill anyone, nor does he want to, but he still manages to take down Wendy, Doranbalt, Panther Lily, Carla and Mirajane, and pushes a full-powered Erza to the limit. The only thing that prevents their and several other deaths are the immortality-granting blessing of the Tenrou Tree, which he also robs from them.

* MyMasterRightOrWrong: He says he doesn't enjoy having to fight children or destroy the Tenrou Tree, but he does it anyway out of loyalty to his guild.
* NobleDemon: PlayedWith. He's an evil and ruthless dark mage, but still has a bizarre sense of honor. He doesn't care for using underhanded methods, finishing off weak opponents, or being unnecessarily cruel. He dislikes having been ordered to destroy the Tenrou Tree as he'd rather be a FairPlayVillain and defeat the Fairy Tail mages in a straight-up battle but is far too loyal to his guild to disobey. He does find a loophole by purposedly letting Erza keep her magic just so he could have a WorthyOpponent and makes a wager with her that if she defeats him, he'll restore the magic of her guildmates. When she does, he [[IGaveMyWord keeps his word]].

* VillainsNeverLie: Erza makes him promise to restore the Tenrou Tree's magic to her friends if she wins their battle. True to his word, he does just that right before [[{{Transflormation}} turning into a tree]].

* JetPack: He uses one to reach Tenrou Island from the airship.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Despite the lack of characterization and information on his account as a simple ArcVillain minion during the Tenrou Island arc, Zoldio made sure that neither Lucy nor any other celestial wizard obtained Capricorn's key for more than a decade. More importantly, Grammi's murder led to her daughter Brandish's final transformation into a villain.

Zoldeo is a Celestial Wizard and a former servant of Layla Heartfilia, who recieved Capricorn from her. He used his Human Subordination Magic to possess Capricorn in an attempt to control him.

* BodySnatcher: If he uses his Huma Raise spell on anything that's not human, he merges with it and remains trapped in that form, which is what happened when Zoldeo used it on Capricorn. The only way he can escape is by transferring to another non-human, which he does to Loke and [[HoistByHisOwnPetard leads to his undoing]].

* GlasgowSmile: Zoldeo has [[GoodScarsEvilScars stitches near his mouth]].
* IKnowYourTrueName: Saying his real name aloud causes Zoldeo to forcibly exit his target's body and fade to nothingness, which is the implied reason why he changed his name to Caprico when he possessed Capricorn.

* NoBodyLeftBehind: Zoldeo's body disintegrates into light after being ejected from Loke's body.
