Grimoire Heart is the second and most powerful member of the Balam Alliance dark guilds. Headed by Hades (a.k.a. Precht Gaebolg, the second master of Fairy Tail), this guild believes the Black Wizard Zeref Dragneel to be in a [[SealedEvilInACan "sleeping" state]] in which he cannot use the full extent of his power. As such, they seek to "awaken" him to bring about the Great Magic World, where wizards may thrive while ordinary humans (i.e., 90% of the world's population) would perish. Their hunt for Zeref leads to them coincidentally crossing paths with Fairy Tail on Sirius Island in X784, resulting in a showdown that leaves Grimoire Heart in shambles.

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:In General]]
* AllForNothing: Not only was Zeref never asleep in the first place, but the "keys" they sought after to awaken him were also just an old wives' tale made up by Zeref fanatics who were desperate to one day acquire his power.
* ArcVillain: The guild is responsible for all the danger in the Sirius Island arc and Fairy Tail stopping his plans during the S-Class exam is their main mission.
* AwakeningTheSleepingGiant: Their "awakening" of Zeref does eventually come back to haunt them in the Sirius Island arc; their atrocities prove to be the final straw for Zeref, who stops doing his best to avoid all life forms and proceeds to kill Hades. This, in turn, manages to draw the attention of Acnologia, a murder-happy dragon capable of destroying continents.
* BadassCrew: They are considered the most powerful member of the Balam Alliance pre-TimeSkip for a reason. Their weaker members like Yomazu and Kawazu are capable of taking on Gajeel and nearly winning; the Seven Kin of Purgatory fight on par with and defeat some of Fairy Tail's strongest wizards (with even Rustyrose who can easily overwhelm a large number of the enemies on his own); Blue Note could match blows with a semi-serious Gildarts for a time; and their guild master Hades is a former master of Fairy Tail who single-handedly defeated Makarov, the entirety of Natsu's team, and Laxus by his lonesome, only losing thanks to outside intervention.
* CoDragons: Ultear and Bluenote are Hades' most trusted right-hands, with the former serving as the leader of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, while the latter serves as the sub-commander of Grimoire Heart.
* CoolAirship: The guild travels around in one, which is fitted with its own [[WaveMotionGun Jupiter Cannon]].
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Their efforts to commit atrocities in Zeref's name and awaken his power does ''not'' sit well with Zeref in the long run.
* TheDreaded: They're touted as the most powerful dark guild of the Balam Alliance during the Sirius Island arc.
* EvilCounterpart: To Fairy Tail, as both are considered to be the strongest guilds, with Fairy Tail being the strongest legal guild and with Grimoire Heart being the strongest dark guild. Even some of Grimoire Heart’s members are this to some of the members of the Fairy Tail guild.
* FacelessGoons: In the anime adaptation, Grimoire Heart's {{Mooks}} are all given matching hooded uniforms with masks adorned with the guild's emblem, whereas the manga gives them all unique designs.
* ItsAllAboutMe: They commit mass genocide without remorse for the sake of reawakening Zeref's power, which they believe will create a utopia all for themselves.
* MeaningfulName:
** A grimoire is a textbook of magic. The books typically include instructions on how to create magical objects like talismans, how to perform magical spells, charms and divination. They also show how to summon or invoke supernatural entities such as angels, spirits, or demons.
** The heart could refer to either one of two things if you think about it. Hades' magical power is enhanced by a mechanical heart in his [[CoolAirship base of operations]], and the second is a reference to Fairy Heart, which Mavis's body contains.
* MythicalMotifs: Strongly associated with devils.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The strongest members of this guild are presented to us with offensive magical abilities so developed that they can destroy, with embarrassing ease, everything that falls within their visual range.
* PyrrhicVictory: Technically speaking, Grimoire Heart got exactly what it wanted, insofar as finding Zeref goes; they did indeed find Zeref, and seven years later, Zeref becomes active in the world. However, Hades and Zancrow are killed by Zeref in the process, two more of their members undergo a HeelFaceTurn, and the rest are [[UncertainDoom either dead or in hiding]] with Grimoire Heart as a guild now more or less defunct.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Being introduced after the Oración Seis, yet are said to be the strongest corner of the Balam Alliance, if only because no one knew anything about Tartaros.
* SuperSupremacist: Their EvilPlan involved creating a world where only mages would be able to survive.

Hades, formerly known as Precht Gaebolg, is one of the four founders of Fairy Tail, where he also served as its second guild master. Following a tragedy that left Fairy Tail's first master, Mavis, in a state between life and death, he turned to the dark arts to revive her, which led to him making a shocking discovery that threw everything he ever knew about magic into question. Tracing the origins of magic back to Zeref, Precht left the guild in Makarov's hands and formed Grimoire Heart as Hades to awaken the seemingly dormant Black Wizard's primordial power, determined to claim this singularity, the One Magic, for himself.
:
Despite his advanced age, Hades is a master fighter and genius wizard who "dances" with magic, as he puts it, with skills ranging from conjuring magic chains to drawing the most elaborate of runic spells in an instant. However, he cannot sustain his power without the mechanical "heart" aboard his airship, which harbors a deep connection to one of Fairy Tail's darkest secrets.
----
* AboveGoodAndEvil: When Makarov questions him about being the head of a dark guild, he responds that the world is full of things that cannot be measured as simply good or evil. Whether it's meant to represent him as [[EnlightenedAntagonist having outgrown such ideas in his pursuit of the One Magic]], or to highlight [[FaceHeelTurn the decay of his own morality from the man he once was]], can be argued either way.
* AbusiveParent: He's stated to have raised the Seven Kin of Purgatory (sans Caprico), making him their foster father. However, he only took them in so that he could mold them into his personal QuirkyMinibossSquad and doesn't seem to actually care about their safety, as he's downright ecstatic upon finding out that Kain and Zancrow have been defeated. However, it's also downplayed as neither him or any of the Kin seem to regard each other in a familial light (Ultear and Merudy's mother-daughter bond being the exception) and the narrative only treats him as an EvilMentor. {{Flashback}}s between him and Ultear show him being supportive of her talent with time magic, and he discourages her from learning Last Ages due to being a type of magic that will harm her.
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the manga, the younger Precht has light blond hair and wears a black outfit. In his initial anime appearance, his hair is black and he has a white outfit. The ''Fairy Tail Zero'' adaptation fixes the hair, but keeps the lighter outfit.
* TheArchmage: He's a self-professed expert at [[TheDarkArts the Black Arts]] developed and performed by Zeref himself, and passed that immense knowledge and power onto his followers, the Seven Kin of Purgatory. He's considered one of the strongest wizards in the story, definitely the strongest of anyone before the {{Time Skip}}s aside from Zeref and Acnologia, and could still be counted amongst that number even after them.
* BackFromTheDead: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He's among the dead characters briefly brought back as a clone through Neinhart's Historia of the Dead, based on Laxus's memory of him. However, Laxus manages to take him down again.
* BadassTeacher: He taught Makarov how to become a powerful wizard and guild master, and later taught the Seven Kin of Purgatory about Lost Magic.
* BeardOfEvil: His long beard is not just a reminder of his badassery, but also perfectly reflects his twisted personality.
* BigBadWannabe: He has all the makings to become the BigBad upon his introduction: immeasurable power and resources, a deeply rooted connection to the protagonists, a hand behind most of the series' major conflicts and being one of the most powerful foes they've faced. However, by the end of the Sirius Island arc, Zeref emerges as the true BigBad and kills Hades.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Before training to become a wizard, he fought using retractable chain blades fired from his sleeves, which aren't too far off from the VariableLengthChain spell he practices.
* BrokenPedestal: He was Makarov's mentor and the man who instilled within him the values of Fairy Tail that Mavis herself preached, in particular the idea of the guild being a family and TrueCompanions. Makarov in turn would teach those values to the current generation of Fairy Tail, and upon realizing that Hades has turned to TheDarkSide is left in utter disbelief that his mentor had fallen so far.
* CurbStompBattle: Defeats Makarov without breaking a sweat. Then, in the fight against Fairy Tail's Strongest Team, he [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown utterly trashes the group]] after they finish their "warm up". He finally winds up on the receiving end when his [[ImmortalityInducer heart]] is destroyed by [[BigDamnHeroes Carla and Happy]] and Ultear restores the Sirius Tree, turning the tables.
* CynicismCatalyst: In the backstory, Mavis's curse and decades of trying to resurrect her without any success made Precht slowly turn to TheDarkSide.
* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: Hades's immeasurable power and long life are supported by a mechanical "heart" aboard his CoolAirship. While destroying it doesn't kill him, it reduces his magic to practically nothing, turning him back into the feeble old man he really is.
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: His downward spiral into obsession with Zeref all started when he worked to lift Mavis's curse and revive her from her state between life and death, ultimately leading to his FaceHeelTurn.
* DeaderThanDead: Not only does Zeref kill him, his wandering soul gets harvested by [[YourSoulIsMine Franmalth]] from Tartaros. Once Franmalth is beaten, Precht's soul finally moves on.
* {{Determinator}}: He is a former member of Fairy Tail, after all. Despite everything Natsu and his team throw at him, he keeps coming back for more. While that can at least be partially attributed to his "heart", he refuses to surrender when it's destroyed, despite the ensuing NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, and attempts to cast [[UnholyNuke Grimoire Law]] to finish them all off in the anime. It takes Natsu hitting him point-blank with his strongest new move in order to finally put him down.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: His plan involves slaughtering innocent lives to obtain "keys" that will supposedly lift whatever seal has been suppressing Zeref's true power. The only problem is, the legend of these "keys" were just rumors started by cultists, holding no more water than the [[ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated rumors of Zeref's death]]; the real reason Zeref wasn't doing anything was because [[AllPowerfulBystander he just didn't feel like it]].
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Despite not being the BigBad, he's had a hand in many of the earlier arcs through his dragon Ultear's manipulations and he's by far the most powerful enemy Fairy Tail has ever faced before the first TimeSkip, as well as the personal connections he has to the guild as a former Master. With his defeat, the ''true'' BigBadEnsemble makes itself known with Zeref finally deciding to get involved in events (starting by killing him), and Acnologia making his first onscreen appearance at all due to being drawn to the fighting between Fairy Tail and Grimoire Heart.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Hades and his guild are among the few at the start of the series to know that Zeref never died in the first place, but in his attempts to parse the truth from his legends, he came to the conclusion that the weak and remorseful Zeref is just a result of his true power and evil "sleeping", and thus needs to be "awakened".
* EvilCostumeSwitch: He wears a light-colored uniform back when he was a founding member of Fairy Tail. After leaving Fairy Tail to form Grimoire Heart, however, he switches to a dark uniform with a black cape and adds a helmet.
* EvilCounterpart: He considers himself one to Makarov, believing the source of all magic can only found in the depths of darkness while Makarov seems to want to keep it in the world of light. He also has [[UnholyNuke Grimoire Law]] to counter Makarov's [[HolyHandGrenade Fairy Law]].
* EvilGenius: He devised a way to grant himself limitless power and long life through mechanical means, which he developed after his accidental discovery/creation of Fairy Heart, a limitless wellspring of magic power.
* EvilIsNotAToy: He thinks he'll be able to achieve his goals by [[SealedEvilInACan breaking Zeref's seal]]. Unfortunately for Hades, this comes back to haunt him when Zeref reveals he wasn't sealed after all and [[AwakeningTheSleepingGiant his actions have ushered in a greater force of evil]].
* EvilMentor: After his FaceHeelTurn, he raised the Seven Kin of Purgatory in the art of Lost Magic, forbidden spells that have serious ramifications on those who misuse them.
* EvilOldFolks: He's one of the vilest and formidable opponents Fairy Tail faces in the series, and he is much older than Makarov, pushing into his 100s.
* EvilPlan: His plan is to awaken Zeref's power so that Grimoire Heart can bring about the Great Magic World. He ultimately fails at the end of the Sirius Island arc.
* EvilSorcerer: A textbook example. He performs TheDarkArts inscribed within the Books of Zeref, and he seeks to acquire the source of all magic power. As it's later revealed, however, he did not begin this path out of a selfish desire, but rather to revive his friend, Mavis.
* EyepatchOfPower: He wears an eyepatch over his right eye. He originally started using it after [[EyeScream losing his eye]] in ''Fairy Tail Zero'', but after he replaced the eye with a MagicalEye that causes him to go OneWingedAngel when opened, the eyepatch serves a sort of PowerLimiter.
* EyeScream: His right eye was shot out during his team's disastrous first encounter with the Blue Skull guild in ''Zero'', resulting in his EyepatchOfPower.
* FaceHeelTurn: Precht spent most of his time with Fairy Tail as a heroic wizard, as shown in ''Zero''. However, his obsession with finding the source of magic to revive his friend Mavis led to his final transformation into Hades.
* FaceOfAThug: In the anime, he was noted for looking rather intimidating as a young man, frightening countless civilians simply for asking them the time of day, but was ultimately a MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold. Tragically, that kindness did not last for him in his later years.
* FallenHero: He was once a noble wizard who turned to TheDarkSide when he left Fairy Tail and organized Grimoire Heart in search of the source of all magic, leading him to hunt down the most powerful dark wizard in history and claim his magic for himself.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He appears [[ApologeticAttacker regretful for having to attack Fairy Tail]], trying to dissuade Makarov from fighting and expressing his apologies when Blue Note goes out to fight them against his wishes. When Makarov's "children" stand against him personally, however, he decimates them without a hint of remorse.
* GagNose: When viewed from the front, Hades's nose is shaped like an arrow pointing downward.
* TheGift: When he began training in magic with Yuri and Warrod under the tutelage of Zeref, he was particularly praised by the latter for having a sort of natural predisposition to become skilled and powerful in using more than one type of magic.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: His accidental creation of Fairy Heart, which he realized was partially brought about by the Curse of Ankhselam that Mavis unwittingly gained from using a spell she learned from Zeref, caused Precht's disillusionment with everything he thought he knew about magic, thus leading to his FaceHeelTurn.
* GoneHorriblyRight: While the actions he took to "awaken" Zeref were heavily misguided, they ultimately [[AwakeningTheSleepingGiant spurred him into action]] in a way far different and more horrible than he intended.
* HandBlast: He can shoot magic energy bullets from his fingertips. [[NotSoAboveItAll He also says "bang" while firing them]].
* HeroKiller: Though he doesn't kill anyone (not onscreen, anyway), he does leave Makarov on the brink of death and pushes Fairy Tail's Strongest Team to the point where they barely have enough strength to stand.
* HerosEvilPredecessor: To Makarov, though to begin with, he wasn't evil. By the time the two meet again on Sirius Island, Makarov is horrified to find his old master has fallen to TheDarkSide and started the most infamous dark guild in the world.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: After Hades has Azuma destroy the Sirius Tree in an effort to drain Fairy Tail's power, the Exceed destroy his ImmortalityInducer and Ultear restores the tree, draining ''his'' own power and allowing Fairy Tail to defeat him. Then, Zeref gets back at Hades for his EvilPlan when he uses his Repent spell on Grimoire Heart's ship. In fact, while most of the ship gets destroyed, Hades is hit ''directly by the spell''.
* HumiliationConga: Once his "heart" is destroyed, the rest of his battle with Fairy Tail consists of each wizard getting a hit on him and volleying him over to the next for more punishment before he's humiliated more by Makarov sparing his life and letting him leave, only for him to finally get casually offed by Zeref who didn't appreciate his interference.
* IcyGrayEyes: His gray eyes emphasize his stone-faced nature.
* ImmortalityInducer: "Grimoire Heart" actually alludes to a machine on his airship that sustains his life and magic, modeled after his research into the "Fairy Heart" he inadvertently created when trying to revive Mavis, which provides never-ending magic. This allows him to keep getting up no matter how many times he's knocked down, but reduces his magic to practically nothing when it's destroyed.
* InstantExpert: As shown in the anime, he was the first of his group to tap into his inner magic, and was praised by Zeref for his natural talent.
* InstantRunes: His Amaterasu spell seals, which are supposed to be ridiculously hard to do so quickly according to Makarov.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: After years of getting away with a lot of evil actions, he finally gets what's coming to him at the conclusion of Grimoire Heart's battle with Fairy Tail on Sirius Island.
* KnightOfCerebus: Hades is not the first EvilSorcerer or FallenHero to appear in the series, but his appearance indicates that Fairy Tail itself has some darkness in its past, and really sets the Zeref meta-plot in motion.
* TheLeader: He's the guild master and founder of Grimoire Heart, having created to dark guild to help him in his goal of finding Zeref and the source of magic. He even personally trained many of their strongest members since they were children.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: His love for Mavis, whether platonic or romantic in nature, led to him doing everything in his power to bring her back to life after she fell under Zeref's curse. The answer, he came to believe, required him to trample over everything Mavis stood for, which factored into his FaceHeelTurn.
* MagicalEye: His [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowing red]] Devil's Eye, which is hidden behind his EyepatchOfPower. When he opens it, his magic power increases exponentially and nearly drive the heroes into an emotional breakdown.
* MasterApprenticeChain: Given how he appointed Makarov as his successor, the latter is directly down the chain from him.
* TheMinionMaster: His Nemesis spell gives him the power to turn bits of rubble into ferocious monsters.
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: In the anime adaptation of ''Fairy Tail Zero'', Mavis surmises this about Precht after observing his interactions with other people. He was a SociallyAwkwardHero who had others' best interests at heart, but his [[FaceOfAThug intimidating looks]] and [[NoSocialSkills lack of social skills]] or [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace sense of personal space]] led many strangers to unfairly label him as a menace, and at one point [[AccidentalPervert a pervert]]. It's all but stated that this is what ultimately inspired Mavis to name him her successor in her will.
* MythicalMotifs: his appearance evokes a lot of devil imagery, having a horned helmet, spiked armour, and is empowered by his [[MagicalEye "Devil Eye"]], all on top of his Devil Heart.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Being named after the God of the Underworld in Myth/GreekMythology discourages anyone from screwing with him. Before this, his true surname is Gaebolg, after Gáe Bolg, the deadly, cursed spear of Cú Chulainn from Myth/CelticMythology.
* {{Necromancy}}: He dabbled in this for over 30 years in an effort to bring Mavis back to life. He failed, but he did manage to create Fairy Heart in the process, which also led to his creation of the artificial "Grimoire Heart" that sustains his life and magic.
* NoSell: The final battle of the Sirius Island arc consists of him getting up without a scratch every time he is apparently crushed. This is thanks to his [[ImmortalityInducer "heart"]], and it only stops when [[HoistByHisOwnPetard the "heart" is destroyed]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite his no-nonsense approach to his work, he has his own quirk in the form of an awkward naming sense. For instance, he unironically wanted Fairy Tail to be called the "Precht Brothers", and he was quite disappointed when Mavis ignored his suggestion that the newborn Makarov be named "Pippoco". He also takes to saying "bang" while shooting magic bullets from his fingers.
* OhCrap: His battle with Natsu's team is practically an exchange of shocked and horrified expressions between both sides; he gives an "Oh, Crap!" face each time Team Natsu pulls an impressive stunt, and he gets one in return for every time he {{No Sell}}s them. But his ultimate "Oh, Crap!" face comes when he realizes his "heart" is destroyed and later when Zeref is about to kill him.
* OneManArmy: Back when he couldn't practice magic, he could still single-handedly take out a bar filled with ordinary thugs. Taking on a whole unit of ''wizards'' without his own magic, however, [[EyeScream cost him his eye]].
* OrcusOnHisThrone: After defeating Makarov, he spends much of the arc sitting around on his CoolAirship without doing anything beyond drinking AGlassOfChianti until "Makarov's kids" who have defeated his subordinates just waltz right through his door.
* TheParagonAlwaysRebels: He was one of Fairy Tail's most respected wizards until he turned to TheDarkSide after tracing the root of all magic back to Zeref.
* PurpleIsPowerful: His magic has a purple aura, and he manages to deliver a CurbStompBattle on ''[[TheArchmage Makarov]]'', and later most of Fairy Tails strongest members.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Neinhart's Historia of the Dead produces an exact replica of him from Laxus's memories of him pre-mortem. He promptly vanishes once Laxus beats him.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: He's TheLeader of one of the most powerful guilds and a deadly fighter capable of using dark magic. Fairy Tail's master, Makarov, is no match for him in a straight-up fight and it takes nearly all of Fairy Tail's strongest wizards teaming up just to stand a chance against him.
* SinisterSchnoz: He has a hooked nose shaped like a downward arrow.
* StartOfDarkness: Precht's final transformation into Hades is when Zeref dropped Mavis, [[OnlyMostlyDead neither alive nor dead, at Fairy Tail's doorstep.]] In his attempts to revive her, Precht inadvertently created Lumen Histoire, which led to his obsession with discovering the source of all magic and, in time, Zeref himself.
* TheStoic: Back when he and the rest of the founders formed Fairy Tail, Precht was the most stony-faced and reticent of them all, which hasn't changed once in his old age.
* TermsOfEndangerment: He condescendingly calls Makarov "boy" when they encounter each other, despite Makarov being in his 80s. It actually began as an InsultOfEndearment back when Precht was Fairy Tail's master, using it when Makarov was in his 40s, though [[BrokenPedestal any semblance of endearment has long since vanished]].
* TragicVillain: His backstory in the series shapes him into a more sympathetic character after his death, presenting him not as a simple power-hungry villain who [[FaceHeelTurn fell from grace]] for the sake of it, but a beloved and trusted friend of the BigGood who lost sight of himself when he tried bringing her back to life.
* UnholyNuke: Grimoire Law, the EvilCounterpart to Makarov's [[HolyHandGrenade Fairy Law]]. Though it's never used in action, Hades claims the results would be cataclysmic should the two spells ever clash. In the anime, he attempts to cast it as a last resort to defeat Fairy Tail, but is unable to finish before Natsu unleashes his own FinishingMove to end the fight.
* {{Unperson}}: Hades reasons that Makarov had all records of him expunged from Fairy Tail's archives when the guild doesn't recognize him as their second master, with Natsu thinking he's lying until he utters the origin of Fairy Tail's name. The exact reasons for this are never stated, but it's implied to be because Makarov wanted to remove all traces of Hades's discovery[=/=]creation of Lumen Histoire, i.e., Fairy Heart.
* TheUnsmile: At one point in the anime, his damnedest attempt to give Mavis a warm greeting instead produces a terrifying SlasherSmile.
* VariableLengthChain: His signature spell involves latching onto others and throwing them around with magical chains of length.
* VillainousBreakdown: Hades loses his FauxAffablyEvil demeanor after Zeref refuses to help Hades in his EvilPlan and reveals that his guild unwittingly awakened Acnologia.
* VillainHasAPoint: He refutes Makarov's claim that he was no match for his children, accurately noting they won thanks to outside help (Ultear restoring the Sirius Tree) and [[WorfHadTheFlu his Devil Heart being destroyed]].
* VillainousCheekbones: They're hard to see behind his beard, but they're there.
* TheVoice: For a long time he was just Ultear's mysterious superior whom we heard her talking to but never saw. He's only properly revealed in "[[Recap/FairyTailTenrouIslandArc Sirius Island arc]]".
* WizardBeard: His BeardOfEvil stretches down all the way to his lower chest.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Despite still being able to wipe the floor with Natsu's group, Makarov, and Laxus with his "[[ImmortalityInducer heart]]" intact, his magic is nowhere near as strong as it once was, and he could barely withstand Natsu's barrage of Thunder Fire Dragon attacks. This is later proven to be the case in the Tartaros arc, when Franmalth is hardly affected by the same barrage.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He is the strongest dark wizard in Earthland before the first TimeSkip and Zeref returning. He was so strong he was able to defeat Makarov Dreyar who is one of the Ten Wizard Saints and Guild Master of Fairy Tail, overpower Team Natsu, and fight on par with Laxus who is one of strongest members of the Fairy Tail guild. His magic power was even stated to be so monsterous it terrified Team Natsu and he also has the Devils Heart which made him nearly invincible in battle, the heroes only managed to defeat him by having the Devils Heart destroyed making him vulnerable and Natsu gaining a NextTierPowerUp.

The sub-commander of Grimoire Heart, surpassing all of Hades' subordinates with his Gravity Magic, which crushes everything in his wake. However, he cares little for Grimoire Heart's goals and prefers to act in his own manner. After Grimoire Heart is destroyed, he becomes a leading member of the Orochi's Fin guild.
----
* TheAce: He's Grimoire Heart's sub-commander and the second strongest member. He's also strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Gildarts, the ace wizard of Fairy Tail.
* BadassLongcoat: Has one that he wears as a CoatCape.
* BattleAura: Like Gildarts', it can be felt across the entire island, and it has enough physical presence to affect the rain falling down on him.
* BloodKnight: He's enjoys being in the heat of battle, and only Hades direct orders keep him from immediately picking a fight with Fairy Tail. Even then, he disobeys orders and leaves to fight when half of the Seven Kin are defeated.
* TheBusCameBack: He returns after the second TimeSkip as a member of Orochi's Fin, only to be used as [[WorfEffect cannon fodder to show just how absurdly powerful Natsu has become]].
* CharacterCatchphrase: Due to him being a GravityMaster, he has a habit of taunting his opponents by asking them: "Can you fly?".
* ChunkyUpdraft: A deliberate use of this power, given his gravity fields.
* TheDragon: As the guild's sub-commander, Bluenote essentially serves as Hades's right-hand man. However, as Ultear [[TheHeavy is the leader of the Sin Kin and entrusted with various covert operations]] while Blue Note is never shown being entrusted with missions [[DragonWithAnAgenda that aren't self-motivated]], it's likely they [[CoDragons share authority.]]
* DragonWithAnAgenda: He technically outranks Ultear as TheDragon, but cares little for Fairy Tail and Zeref, the latter of which is his guild's goal. Rather, he independently seeks the grave of Mavis Vermillion, Fairy Tail's first master, in order to acquire the magic Fairy Glitter. Hades himself is aware of this but doesn't seem to mind in the slightest.
* TheDreaded: His own guildmates are intimidated by him, warning Fairy Tail that Sirius Island will become an uninhabitable wasteland once he decides to step in.
* DuelBoss: Once Gildarts shows up, everyone clears out to give them room to do battle. Natsu wants to stay and watch, but they drag him away anyway.
* EvilCounterpart: To Gildarts, as they are both ace wizards of their respective guilds.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has quite the deep, gravelly voice. This was deliberately done by the English dubbers who digitally altered Creator/ChuckHuber's normally mid-range voice to produce a deep, intimidating effect.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Much of his battle with Gildarts consists of just regular brawling.
* GravityIsPurple: In the anime, his gravity attacks and InstantRunes are a mix of purple, dark blue, and black.
* GravityMaster: His gravity magic allows him to produce fields of immense gravity that turns anyone unfortunate to get caught in them into a human pancake, and the entire area into a giant crater. Only incredibly powerful wizards can counter it with their own magic power, and of those exposed to it the only ones who can claim to have done so are Gildarts and Natsu post-second TimeSkip.
* GravitySucks: He can create a black hole with his magic, attracting and sucking everything surrounding it with extreme force.
* InconsistentSpelling: His name is usually written as one word, "Bluenote", outside the manga.
* InformedAttribute: While he's described as being the sub-commander of the guild, he's never shown commanding anyone or having any leadership abilities, being a OneManArmy that seems to work by himself. Hades even notes he's too destructive to be relied on.
* LargeAndInCharge: He's a feared leading member of both Grimoire Heart and Orochi's Fin.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Whenever he asks someone if they can fly, it's his way of asking if they can withstand his power. At the end of both his fights ([[OneHitKO if you can call the second battle a fight]]), he's the one who's sent flying.
* OneManArmy: He has a reputation of eliminating a regiment of soldiers while he was lieutenant colonel in another war, and anyone who can stand up to Gildarts for any length of time is someone to watch out for.
* PurpleIsPowerful: His magical aura is purple in colour, and he is considered the strongest member of Grimoire Heart short of Hades himself, including the Seven Kin of Purgatory.
* ATwinkleInTheSky: Gildarts sends him flying at the end of their battle.
* UnrealisticBlackHole: Somehow, Gildarts can not only keep his feet firmly planted when Blue Note creates a black hole, he can also shatter it to pieces.
* VillainBall: He has Gildarts on the ropes due to Azuma taking over the Sirius Tree and draining Fairy Tail of their magic, and could easily kill him whenever he pleases. Instead, he just stomps on Gildarts and gloats like an idiot before Erza manages to turn the power back on, allowing Gildarts to get back into the fight.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: In the Sirius Island arc, he overwhelms Natsu and his friends on Sirius Island, and later he fights toe-to-toe with Gildarts. Eight years later, Natsu becomes strong enough to not only NoSell his gravity magic just like Gildarts, but to also take him down with one shot.
* WalkingWasteland: He has a reputation of creating gravity fields so intense, that they purportedly prevent weeds from growing there ever again.
* TheWorfEffect: The only purpose of his return after the second TimeSkip is to get trounced by Natsu, demonstrating just what kind of power he's capable of.

!!!Seven Kin of Purgatory

The Seven Kin are Grimoire Heart's elite wizard unit, handpicked by Hades to master the Lost Magics, ancient spells that were erased from history due to their extreme power and dangerous side-effects.

[[folder:Seven Kin in General]]
* AntagonistAbilities: Their Lost Magic was erased from history due to how dangerous and powerful they are, and it shows: Rustyrose is practically a full-blown RealityWarper with his imagination-based magic, and Ultear is no less, considering that her Arc of Time allows her to manipulate the time of whatever element surrounds her. The other remaining members of the group turn out to be a challenge that is only beaten with the most unlikely of methods. If it were not that the excessive abuse of these ancient magics entail for all their users the considerable costs and/or side effects that may even be lethal, one could safely say that most of them won the SuperpowerLottery.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Almost all of the Kin are defeated as a result of having their own magic turned against them in one way or another: Zancrow by his flames, Zoldio by his body snatching, Kain by his doll, Merudy by her sensory link, Azuma by his decision to use the Sirius Tree's magic, and Rusty Rose by defeating Elfman and allowing him to be used as Bickslow's trump card. Ultear's defeat, meanwhile, is a result of having [[CallBack helped melt Ur's ice back]] in the Sub-Zero Emperor Lyon arc.
* LostTechnology: All of them use some kind of Lost Magic, which are stated by Hades to be the magic closest to the source of magic, erased from the annals of history due to their extreme power.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: The Seven Kin are extremely threatening, yes, but they fulfill the same role as Oración Seis while being much more allowing for comedy. Kain, in particular, is hilariously incompetent.
* TwoGirlsToATeam: Ultear and Meredy are the only female members of the Kin. Incidentally, they're also the only members to [[HighHeelFaceTurn fully switch sides]].
* {{Tykebomb}}: All of them are said to have been raised and trained by Hades himself to be deadly and nigh unstoppable wizards, with expection of Zoldio.

A battle-hungry wizard whose main concern is to defeat an opponent worth fighting. His Arboreal Arc gives him mastery over trees, which also allows him to harness magic energy hidden deep within the earth to use as he pleases.
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: He's one of the few dark-skinned characters in the series. His ethnicity goes unremarked upon, but he appears to have a Caribbean vibe to him.
* AntiVillain: Compared to his fellow Kin of Purgatory, Azuma is a NobleDemon who respects Fairy Tail's strength.
* BackFromTheDead: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. In the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc, Azuma returns as a [[ReplacementGoldfish reproduction created from Rustyrose's Arc of Incantation before being vanquished]]. Later, Neinhart's Historia of the Dead produces an exact replica of him from Erza's memories of him pre-mortem. A single DeathGlare from Erza causes him to vanish with his tail between his legs.
* BeardOfEvil: In keeping with the above, Azuma has a fairly decent-sized beard, and one befitting a dark wizard at that.
* BloodKnight: His blood boils whenever he's faced with a strong opponent and takes on Fairy Tail hoping they'll be worth his mettle. There's definitely a sexual undercurrent to his thrill of the fight, too, signified by his LecherousLicking.
* DreadlockWarrior: He looks vaguely Rastafarian, and is a full-fledged badass who can stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Fairy Tail's S-Class wizards.
* DubNameChange: His Arboreal Arc is called the "Arc of Trees" in the Funimation dub.
* EmeraldPower: Has green clothing, a green magical aura, and is the most battle-hungry of the Kin.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: During his fight with Erza, he admits that he's uncomfortable with the underhanded methods of his companions and with his orders to destroy the Sirius Tree, and the only reason he does so here is that he was ordered to by his master.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Azuma has an incredibly deep voice, fitting his height and musculature.
* FacialMarkings: A stripe from the top of his forehead to the middle of his left cheek.
* FanDisservice: Azuma is a handsome, well-built guy whose shirt disappears halfway through the arc. Unfortunately, when he's using his power of merging with trees, he gets all weird and veiny as branches start fusing with his body.
* GoOutWithASmile: The last we see of his face before he fully turns into a tree is [[FaceDeathWithDignity a content smile]].
* GracefulLoser: As he [[DeerInTheHeadlights stares in slack-jawed awe]] at his imminent defeat, he simply smiles and calls Fairy Tail an incredible guild, openly admiring their bonds and the strength of their conviction.
* GratuitousLatin: Several of his attack names are Latin, such as "Folium Sica" (Leaf Dagger), "Ramus Sica" (Branch Dagger), and "Terra Clamare" (Cries of the Earth).
* GreenThumb: His brand of Lost Magic, the Arboreal Arc, gives him control over trees and nature. He uses it to take control of the magical power of Sirius Island through the Sirius Tree, which gives Fairy Tail immortality and a boost to their magic.
* HavingABlast: He creates explosions by condensing the magic welled deep in the earth into explosive fruits.
* HeroKiller: He doesn't really kill anyone, nor does he want to, but he still manages to take down Wendy, Doranbalt, Panther Lily, Carla and Mirajane, and pushes a full-powered Erza to the limit. The only thing that prevents their and several other deaths are the immortality-granting blessing of the Sirius Tree, which he also robs from them.
* HonorBeforeReason: While [[IGaveMyWord keeping his word that he would return Fairy Tail's magic if Erza defeated him]] is certainly an honorable act, doing it in the middle of a war with them was not a very reasonable thing to do. Had Azuma robbed the magic of all Fairy Tail, Erza included, Grimoire Heart' s victory would have been more than certain.
* IGaveMyWord: He proves his honesty to Erza that he would return her guild's magic upon his defeat, despite how keeping their magic cut off would benefit his own guild.
* KickTheDog: Despite proclaiming to hate killing others needlessly, he places a timed explosion on Lisanna and tells Mirajane [[IHaveYourWife she has that long to defeat him]], just so he can fight her at full strength.
* KilledMidSentence: He spends his last moments explaining Grimoire Heart's motives for finding the One Magic to Erza, but is unable to fully finish saying what he believes would happen when they find it.
* LightningBruiser: Every one of Azuma's prerequisite physical abilities is monstrous. Strength-wise, he's able to punch Erza through several trees and have her gasping for breath. Speed-wise, he can keep up with and outdo Erza in her Soaring Armor. Reflex-wise, he was able to react before Doranbalt, who had teleported directly behind him to attack him, and noted it to be boring.
* MrFanservice: Azuma is an incredibly masculine man who spends the entire second half of his arc completely bare above the waist, and holds an extended fight scene as well as a scene in the rain that way. His muscles get a lot of focus when he uses his magic, too.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: He says he doesn't enjoy having to fight children or destroy the Sirius Tree, but he does it anyway out of loyalty to his guild.
* NobleDemon: PlayedWith. He's an evil and ruthless dark mage, but still has a bizarre sense of honor. He doesn't care for using underhanded methods, finishing off weak opponents, or being unnecessarily cruel. He dislikes having been ordered to destroy the Sirius Tree as he'd rather be a FairPlayVillain and defeat the Fairy Tail mages in a straight-up battle but is far too loyal to his guild to disobey. He does find a loophole by purposedly letting Erza keep her magic just so he could have a WorthyOpponent and makes a wager with her that if she defeats him, he'll restore the magic of her guildmates. When she does, he [[IGaveMyWord keeps his word]].
* NotSoStoic: His usual stone-faced expression fades away to glee when he's fighting a WorthyOpponent.
* OhCrap: He realizes his fate the moment his overuse of magic against Erza turns him into a tree.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: His destructive capabilities are greater than any of the other Seven Kind's abilities seen, as he blows up numerous Magic Council ships with ease at a distance.
* PetTheDog: Very slight, and directed at the same people he had a KickTheDog moment with earlier, but after Mirajane sacrifices herself to save Lisanna from him, Azuma silently leaves Lisanna to cry over her sister rather than finish them both off.
* PragmaticVillainy: An unusual example. While he enjoys nothing more than a fair battle with a WorthyOpponent, he's quite willing to use dirty tactics to ''force'' his opponent to fight him while giving them extra motivation to fight even harder. He holds Lisanna hostage with a timed explosion, just to force Mirajane to desperately fight him with Satan Soul before the timer runs out, and destroys the Sirius Tree while preserving Erza's magic, then making a wager that he'd restore the magic of her guildmates if she fought and defeated him.
* PunchClockVillain: Unlike several of the other Kin, Azuma doesn't have a bone to pick with any of the Fairy Tail members besides [[MyMasterRightOrWrong being told to attack them by Hades]] and [[BloodKnight fighting strong people]].
* ReplacementGoldfish: In the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc, Rustyrose creates an exact copy of Azuma with his Arc of Incarnation to storm Tartaros' guildhall, since the real Azuma was [[{{Transflormation}} turned into a tree]].
* ShirtlessScene: Once it starts to rain, he removes his top and holds a conversation [[{{Fanservice}} while water streams down his body]].
* TheStoic: He is typically a stone-faced warrior most of the time. However, he's not above [[NotSoStoic grinning with maniacal pleasure]] in the heat of battle.
* {{Transflormation}}: After Erza beats him, he turns into a tree as a result of burning out his magic and dies.
* VillainBall: {{Invoked|Trope}}; he's so eager to fight the exceptionally badass Erza that he gambles his guild's already secured victory in an all-or-nothing battle to the death, knowingly giving Erza a chance to save her friends. Not that this makes it any easier for Erza to win.
* VillainRespect: Azuma is one of the very few villains in the series to not merely acknowledge that Fairy Tail's skill and strength. When Erza is about to lose their battle, Azuma proclaims her to be such a WorthyOpponent that he will remember her name for the rest of his life.
* VillainsNeverLie: Erza makes him promise to restore the Sirius Tree's magic to her friends if she wins their battle. True to his word, he does just that right before [[{{Transflormation}} turning into a tree]].
* WorthyOpponent: His life's goal is to find, fight, and defeat opponents worth fighting. He gets his wish when he encounters Mirajane and Erza. When the latter defeats him, he is so satisfied with their fight that [[FaceDeathWithDignity he accepts his death graciously]].
* WouldHitAGirl: His opponents' sex means less to Azuma than their strength, skill, and conviction, as evidenced when he fights Mirajane and Erza with great excitement and no mercy.
* WouldHurtAChild: He blows Wendy and Carla away alongside Mest and Lily without remorse, deeming their survival unlikely.

A poetic and arrogant wizard with the ability to give physical form to anything from his imagination using his Arc of Incarnation.
----
* AnimeHair: His hair is styled in a massive, overly-gelled pompadour.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He thinks of his magic as invincible, and comes to believe that all of Fairy Tail is weak after he beats Elfman and Evergreen with little effort.
* TheBusCameBack: He makes a return in the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc with a much older and more disheveled look.
* EvilCounterpart: To Fried. Both are stoic {{Bishonen}} with a nigh-unbeatable power (and understandable pride in such) with epic hair. But while Fried is quiet and mostly a nice guy when he's not on the attack, Rustyrose is a douche who loves to talk.
* EvilIsHammy: He acts highly overdramatically, and his gradual loss of composure only makes it worse.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: He wears glasses and is quite on board with his guild's plan to reawaken the deadliest wizard on the face of the world.
* HatesBeingAlone: The anime reveals that, after surviving his close encounter with Zeref, he set out to find the other remnants of Grimoire Heart in the hopes of rebuilding the guild, unable to move on from his past. To drive the point home, he goes as far as creating ReplacementGoldfish for Azuma and Zancrow, two of his guild's confirmed casualties.
* IfICantHaveYou: His anime-only return in the Tartaros arc has him trying to take Merudy back by force, ultimately attempting to kill Jellal (her only guildmate at the time) to seal the deal.
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: His Arc of Incarnation can give physical form to anything he can imagine, from pegasus shoes to impenetrable shields, from giant towers of magical energy to eyeglasses, all without any need for resources or any noticeable side-effects. Because there's no obvious way to counter this ability, Evergreen and Elfman are utterly curb-stomped by him once he stops toying around, and it takes some seriously creative combination attacks for Fairy Tail to finally beat him.
* InconsistentSpelling: His name is parsed as "Rusty Rose" early on in the Kodansha translation.
* InformedFlaw: He claims that there are serious side-effects of his incredibly powerful magic, but they are never shown or explained, and they don't stop him from kicking serious amounts of ass. The only one that's shown is in the anime, when Kyoka uses her [[AgonyBeam Curse]] on him which [[NoOntologicalInertia results in his creations of Azuma and Zancrow vanishing as he loses concentration]].
* {{Jerkass}}: He has no respect for Fairy Tail and he takes pleasure in hurting others. Then there's the fact that he thinks killing off 90% of the world's population is a sweet idea.
* LackOfEmpathy: He thrills at the prospect of living in a world just for wizards while the rest of mankind bites the dust.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: He can imagine a golden shield into his left hand.
* MeaningfulName: Hiro Mashima says he is named after a certain drink, most likely Rusty Nail.
* MundaneUtility: Uses his powers to make a new pair of glasses. Given the situation, it's justified as it protects him from Evergreen's petrification spell.
* OneManArmy: His very powerful magic makes him this and he have such instant control that he not only [[CurbStompBattle easily defeats both Evergreen and Elfman]] but he would have been able to totally destroy the rest of the Fairy Tail's wizards at the camp if Bickslow had not exploited the surprise factor in time by controlling Elfman to beat the crap out of him.
* PsychoticSmirk: Pops up quite frequently once he fights Elfman and Evergreen.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Has a purple aura to his Lost Magic, which is a major winner of the SuperpowerLottery.
* TheRemnant: He returns after in the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc as one of the last remaining members of Grimoire Heart on the loose, and the only one desperately trying to restore his guild to its original status. When his attempt at negotiating with Tartaros blows up in his face, he resorts to trying to kidnap Merudy, who'd already moved on with her life when she joined Crime Sorcière. After being defeated a final time, he appears to abandon his ambitions once and for all, and is never heard from again.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Tends to happen whenever he decides to get serious.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: As a self-described poet, he apparently feels the need to engage in some of the most flowery, purple, overdone prose in the entire series.
* ShapeshifterWeapon: When it comes down for him to fight hand-to-hand, he transforms his right arm into an extendable black claw.
* ShipperOnDeck: He is under the impression that Elfman and Evergreen's bickering is a lovers' quarrel, much to their denial.
* SmugSuper: The guy's got quite the ego on him, and it's deserved considering he's one of the few of the Seven Kin to decisively win a battle, and how much effort it takes the heroes to take him down.
* SquishyWizard: Despite the massive amount of trouble his magic gives Fairy Tail, Evergreen isn't wrong to guess that his body isn't particularly well-suited for physical combat. Once Fried and Bickslow disrupt his magic long enough, a single strike is all it takes to beat him.
* TheStoic: He's fairly calm, if a little spacey when first introduced. That image is quickly [[NotSoStoic swept aside]] when he begins giggling madly at the prospect of the Grand Magic World.
* SuperpowerLottery: He can pull anything he needs out of thin air with no apparent drawbacks, despite his claims otherwise. His powers are so broken, it requires some serious creativity and teamwork on Fairy Tail's part in order to beat him.
* WarriorPoet: One of the most defining examples in the series because he uses his poetry to fight. The source of his magic is his "artist's soul", which allows him to use his imagination to create things. He is also horrified by the lack of elegance and beauty in his enemies.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: He [[OhCrap experiences fear for the first time in his life]] when Fried and Bickslow step up to fight him for hurting Evergreen. This fear actually proves beneficial for him, since it gives him inspiration for terrifying new spells. He has a more epic one later when, once Azuma restores the magical power of Fairy Tail, he gets his ass handed to him by the combined effort of Fried, Bickslow, Lisanna, and Elfman.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He is a silvery-haired poet whose goal in life is to create a world where his creativity can flourish while the rest of the world perishes in anguish.

A childish and obese sumo wrestler who wields the Curse of Vengeance, a voodoo-like cursing magic that lets him control others' bodies with his doll, Mr. Cursey.
----
* {{Acrofatic}}: He looks and fights like a sumo wrestler, but is deceptively agile. He can make himself stronger and faster by using Mr. Cursey on himself and changing the properties of the doll.
* AffablyEvil: He's nice enough to [[HoistByHisOwnPetard demonstrate how his magic works to his enemies]] when he's in a good mood, but he's evil enough to [[KickThemWhileTheyAreDown try and crush Lucy's head while she's incapacitated]].
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: His chalky white skin makes him stand out among the rest of Grimoire Heart's human members.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's the resident ButtMonkey of Grimoire Heart, a guild filled with deadly wizards who devastate all who cross their path. The thing is, [[NotSoHarmlessVillain Kain is just as dangerous a fighter as his guildmates]], and comes close to killing Lucy multiple times in one fight if not for Natsu's timely intervention.
* TheBrute: Is [[DumbMuscle incredibly dim]], but more than makes up for it in raw strength and brutality, managing to dispatch several of Lucy's Celestial Spirits and giving [[KungFuWizard Natsu]] trouble in a fight.
* ButtMonkey: Much of the Sirius Island arc's comedy from his hilarious pratfalls. It almost makes you forget [[BewareTheSillyOnes he's out to kill the heroes]].
* CallingYourAttacks: Being a sumo wrestler, most of his palm attacks are accompanied by a cry of "Do-Doskoi!"
* CasanovaWannabe: Has an ImagineSpot in the anime of holding a fawning Cana, Lisanna, and Levy in his arms in his fight.
* CompanionCube: Mr. Cursey, which is required to use his magic. In the anime, he's shown to keep spare dolls in case he loses any.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Kain is an honest-to-goodness moron, but as Lucy quickly discovers, he's still counted among Grimoire Heart's top seven elites behind Hades for a damn good reason.
* DubNameChange: The Japanese name of his magic, ''Ushi no Koku Mairi'', means "Visit at the Ox Hour", while the Funimation dub calls it the Witching Hour Curse.
* DumbMuscle: Much less intelligent than his allies, but the strongest in terms of raw physical power.
* FanDisservice: His obesity combined with a rather exposing outfit is already this, but the worst example has to be when we get an [[GrossUpCloseUp unusually detailed close-up]] of his bare nipple. And yes, he has man-boobs. And yes, this is the series with the NippleAndDimed trope applying to the females.
* FatBastard: He may look like a silly sumo wrestler, but he's also a remorseless killer.
* {{Gonk}}: Not helping that he shows a lot of skin under his shirt.
* InASingleBound: He can leap high into the air when he turns his doll into cotton.
* TheJuggernaut: He steamrolls after Lucy through the woods like a train when he turns himself to iron, which also allows him to NoSell any attack Lucy throws at him.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: When he first finds Lucy lying unconscious in the middle of the woods, he wastes no time performing a devastating stomp that likely would've killed her had she not woken up in the nick of time.
* LightEmUp: His Shining Do-doskoi attack, which he uses when he turns the doll to a light source.
* LightningBruiser: He's surprisingly fast and agile despite his bulk, and he can match Natsu blow-for-blow, only going down after getting his own magic used against him.
* NameOfCain: He's a baddie named Kain who worships the BigBad as a sort of DarkMessiah. While his name is actually written in kanji and follows the standard phonetic pronunciation "kah-een" in Japanese[[note]]it would rhyme with "pine" in English[[/note]], he has a connection to a later villain named Able, a deliberate reference to [[CainAndAbel Abel]]. The English dub straight-up uses the English pronunciation of "Cain" anyway.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Lucy jokes around with him for a bit when he [[IdiotBall hands her his own curse doll with his own hair on it]] to demonstrate its power. He quickly proves mettle as one of Grimoire Heart's strongest assets when said demonstration involves plowing after her while NoSell-ing every attack she throws at him out of the way.
* PsychopathicManchild: He's very evil and willing to use lethal force, but acts like a child all the time.
* SpeechImpediment: He speaks with a bad stammer, and at one point speaks so fast no one can understand him.
* StatusBuff: When Kain uses Mr. Cursey on himself, it gives him the consistency of whatever form the doll takes.
* StoutStrength: He's both the largest member of the Seven Kin, and the most powerful purely in terms of physical strength.
* SuperToughness: Turning Mr. Cursey into iron lets him deflect any attack Lucy throws at him.
* TearsOfFear: Happens when Zeref appears on their airship to accost them for their actions and kill their master.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: He's sometimes seen holding an ice cream cone with multiple stacked scoops.
* UncertainDoom: It's unclear whether he died alongside Hades when Zeref blew up Grimoire Heart's ship. In an anime exclusive scene, Rustyrose (who survived the event) admits he's likely dead although he doesn't know for sure. Mr. Cursey turns up in the possession of a Avatar member, leaving his status unknown.
* VerbalTic: "Oo-wey". Also, his stuttering.
* VoodooDoll: Or more accurately, Japanese curse magic. His primary magic requires the hair of his opponent and a curse doll ([[CompanionCube Mr. Cursey]]) which he then uses to [[PeoplePuppets control his opponent's movements]]. He can also use [[HoistByHisOwnPetard his own hair]].

Zoldio is a Celestial Wizard and a former servant of Layla Heartfilia, who recieved Capricorn from her. He used his Human Subordination Magic to possess Capricorn in an attempt to control him.
----
* AlasPoorVillain: His death is depicted more sympathetically in the anime where he pathetically wails out Layla's name in anguish as he fades away. The adaptation changes his PsychoticSmirk in a flashback to a more pitiful and submissive glance.
* AssimilationBackfire: He used his magic to take control of Capricorn, which wound up getting him stuck in the Celestial Spirit's body until he could find another to take over.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He took over the body of Capricorn, who already owned the "nice suit" look among his fellow spirits.
* BecomeARealBoy: After being stuck in a goat's body for almost 17 years, he decides to take Loke's body and kill Lucy, thereby becoming human again.
* BodySnatcher: If he uses his Huma Raise spell on anything that's not human, he merges with it and remains trapped in that form, which is what happened when Zoldio used it on Capricorn. The only way he can escape is by transferring to another non-human, which he does to Loke and [[HoistByHisOwnPetard leads to his undoing]].
* BodySurf: He jumps from Capricorn's body into Loke's in order to kill Lucy, but Loke is prepared and gives Capricorn his Regulus ring to use it against him.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: His eyes are quite sunken.
* CulturedBadass: He comes across as being rather polite compared to the other Seven Kin.
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: He wasn't always the wicked, lustful wizard willing to murder his master's daughter to become human again, in fact being a faithful servant who agreed to deliver Capricorn's key to Lucy. Layla's death drove him to murder his fellow servant Grammi, whom he blamed for it.
* DubNameChange: "Human Subordination" is translated to "Human Enslavement" in the Funimation dub.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: He was originally one of Layla Heartfilia's servants who consented to give Capricorn's key to Lucy when she came of age. However, he eventually fell to TheDarkSide and merged with Capricorn, becoming one of Grimoire Heart's elites.
* FunnyAnimal: When possessing Capricorn, he's a talking goat-man, and he knows the absurdity of this.
* GlasgowSmile: Zoldio has [[GoodScarsEvilScars stitches near his mouth]].
* IKnowYourTrueName: Saying his real name aloud causes Zoldio to forcibly exit his target's body and fade to nothingness, which is the implied reason why he changed his name to Caprico when he possessed Capricorn.
* InconsistentSpelling: His real name is spelled "Zordio" in the Funimation dub.
* JetPack: He uses one to reach Sirius Island from the airship.
* KungFuWizard: He is a very skilled hand-to-hand fighter without his magic.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: He loved Layla so much that he went over the deep end after Grammi's negligence left her deathly ill, murdering Grammi in retaliation.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: Zoldio's body disintegrates into light after being ejected from Loke's body.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: He has a history with Layla, the mother of main character Lucy; Hades, who has his own past with Fairy Tail; and Grammi, mother of one of the Alvarez Empire's [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Spriggan 12]].
* PetTheDog: Although he killed Grammi to avenge Layla's death, he at least honored her LastRequest to not harm her daughter, Brandish.
* PowerNullifier: His magic dampens the magical and physical combat abilities of humans, making it a challenge for Lucy, Gray, and Cana to fight him, but not spirits like Loke.
* PsychoticSmirk: His default expression when he decides to drop [[TheStoic the Capricorn act]].
* RedRightHand: In the DVD edit of the anime, Loke's skin turns pale blue while possessed by Zoldio.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Despite the lack of characterization and information on his account as a simple ArcVillain minion during the Sirius Island arc, Zoldio made sure that neither Lucy nor any other celestial wizard obtained Capricorn's key for more than a decade. More importantly, Grammi's murder led to her daughter Brandish's final transformation into a villain.
* TheStoic: He carries out his orders for Grimoire Heart with an icy calm. [[NotSoStoic That is]], until he realizes that Lucy is Layla's daughter.
* SummonMagic: Instead of spirits, he summons human warriors he has kidnapped and forced to be his subordinates.
* TragicVillain: He first appears to be a one-dimensional villain who fell to TheDarkSide before meeting Hades. The Alvarez Empire arc, however, fleshes him out as a pitiable man whose fall into darkness began with the death of his beloved benefactor, Layla.
* VerbalTic: He refers to himself in Japanese using the pronoun "''meh''", which sounds like a goat bleating. The Kodansha manga translation renders this as him simply saying "Bah!" while in the Funimation dub he makes goat-like noises when saying certain words such as "baaa-ttle". In every case, Zoldio's used the tic for so long that he has to remind himself not to use it anymore when he switches over to Loke's body.
* VillainousBreakdown: His cool and collected demeanor devolves into a frothing rage once he realizes that Lucy is Layla's daughter.
* WasOnceAMan: Zoldio is a human wizard who trapped himself in a celestial spirit's body after breaking the taboo of his magic.

A psychotic Flame God Slayer whose magic produces divine black flames that incinerate everything they touch.
----
* AlasPoorVillain: Zeref, either ignoring or not realizing the monster Zancrow was in life, closes the God Slayer's eyes when he DiesWideOpen, simply because his life was yet another he didn't mean to take.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Natsu finds he's unable to eat Zancrow's God Slayer flames, while Zancrow is fully capable of eating Natsu's Dragon Slayer flames, indicating that God Slayer Magic is on a higher level than Dragon Slayer Magic. However, Natsu manages to overcome this using the clever yet risky move of depleting his own magic first.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He scoffs at the idea of a "weak" Dragon Slayer like Natsu beating his God Slayer Magic, firmly believing that gods are inherently superior to dragons, and thus requiring more superior magic to slay them.
* AxCrazy: He's a cackling pyromaniac with a god complex who loves to burn people, including his own comrades.
* BackForTheDead: He makes a comeback after his defeat to snatch an unconscious Zeref, only to be soundly killed when Zeref wakes up in his arms.
* BackFromTheDead: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He appears in the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc as [[ReplacementGoldfish a reproduction created from Rustyrose's Arc of Incantation]], but is vanquished. He's also one of the Historias created by Neinhart during the Alvarez Empire arc, returning to torment Merudy a second time. Merudy manages to take him out with Juvia's help, though.
* BadBoss: He incinerates his own subordinates merely for stating that Natsu was too much for them to handle. In his own mind, it's his way of purging Grimoire Heart of weaklings.
* BarbarianLonghair: He has very long, unkempt hair befitting the deranged warrior he is.
* BerserkButton: He doesn't take kindly to weaklings or traitors in his guild, opting to burn them alive.
* BreathWeapon: His Flame God's Bellow, the God Slayer equivalent of Natsu's Fire Dragon's Roar.
* DiesWideOpen: He's left with milky white eyes after Zeref kills him, which compels Zeref to close them.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: He attempts to make a comeback after his loss to Natsu, only to be killed in one fell swoop by a wave of Zeref's death magic when he tries to recapture him.
* EvilCounterpart: He's essentially an AxCrazy version of Natsu who combines the weakling-hating elements of Laxus before his HeelFaceTurn, but with zero trouble actually taking lives.
* EvilIsBurningHot: He bursts into black flames while musing about all the lives he'll take in the battle on Sirius Island.
* EvilLaugh: "UHAHAHAHA!!"
* FangsAreEvil: He has razor-sharp teeth that especially stand out during one of his {{Evil Laugh}}s.
* FeedItWithFire: Zancrow can eat fire just like Natsu, except he has the advantage of being able to eat Natsu's dragon fire while Natsu at first is unable to eat his divine flames.
* AGodAmI: Played with. While he never calls himself a god, Zancrow claims to have been raised by one (since Hades named himself after the god of the underworld) the same way Natsu was raised by a dragon, but he still has quite the superiority complex all the same.
* {{Jerkass}}: As if it didn't need to be said enough times, he has absolutely zero trouble touting his superiority over Dragon Slayers and wasting his own allies for failing to live up to Grimoire Heart's name as the ultimate dark guild.
* KickTheDog: He torches his own allies as they retreat from Natsu because they stated Fairy Tail was too strong for them. He also delights in telling Merudy that her own mother figure was the one behind her DoomedHometown.
* KillItWithFire: His preferred method of purging his enemies and other people he doesn't like is by burning them.
* LaughingMad: There's hardly ever a single scene that shows him without an insane grin or cackle. He's even laughing when Natsu finally takes him down.
* MythicalMotifs: Gods, like most God Slayers, with one of his attacks being named Kagatsuchi, the Japanese god of fire.
* NoSell: He can eat any fire, including Natsu's. However, he's seemingly not immune to his own fire being turned back on him, and Natsu managing to combine his own with Zancrow's lets him unleash a finishing move that puts him down.
* PeacefulInDeath: The anime gives a better look of his peaceful face after Zeref closes his open eyes and mouth, a jarring contrast of his usual AxCrazy SlasherSmile.
* PetTheDog: He very briefly comforted Merudy when the latter made Ultear mad by calling her "Ur." Not that it stops him from attacking and [[KickTheDog revealing Ultear destroyed her hometown all those years ago]] later, but at that point he saw her as a traitor anyways.
* PlayingWithFire: He is a Flame God Slayer, whose magic is functionally a step up from Natsu's Dragon Slayer magic.
* PyroManiac: He loves burning things so much, he makes Fairy Tail's resident fire-nut Natsu look like a pillar of sanity.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He shares the same crimson irises as Zeref does when the Black Wizard has killing intent. In Zancrow's case, however, his eyes are like this by default.
* ReplacementGoldfish: During the anime adaptation of the Tartaros arc, Rustyrose creates an exact replica of a pre-mortem Zancrow with his Arc of Incarnation.
* SacredFlames: Played with since as a [[KillTheGod God Slayer]] Zancrow's flames are divine in nature but his [[{{Pyromaniac}} personality]] alongside what he uses those black flames for gives off connotations closer to that of {{Hellfire}}.
* ShapingYourAttacks: Can make a giant SinisterScythe out of flames, and his ultimate attack looks like a pair of jaws.
* SlasherSmile: It's his default expression, emphasizing how insane he is.
* SmugSmiler: Thanks to a nigh-unshakeable belief is his own superiority, he's constantly got a smug SlasherSmile on his face.
* SmugSnake: He boasts that Jellal and Master Zero of Oracion Seis are nothing compared to himself. In reality, the only real reason Natsu struggles as much as he does against Zancrow is because it takes him a while to figure out how to counter his magic, and even then, Natsu was only able to defeat those two with [[SuperMode Dragon Force]], something he doesn't need to take Zancrow down.
* TechnicolorFire: His God Slayer flames are black, a staple of any God Slayer's particular element.
* TooDumbToLive: It's not really wise to forcibly retrieve Zeref, talk condescendingly to other Dragon Slayers, kick Merudy out of Grimoire Heart and mock her for her hometown's destruction, and waste his own allies.
* UndyingLoyalty: His only positive trait is that he genuinely respects both Hades and Grimoire Heart, with his incidents of UnfriendlyFire being under the belief [[SocialDarwinist that the strongest dark guild doesn't need weaklings destroying their reputation]] and his attack on and mocking of Merudy, while cruel, are only done after he realizes she and Ultear are betraying the guild by taking Zeref for themselves.
* UnfriendlyFire: He indulges in this when he deliberately burns his own unit to a crisp for being too weak to fight Natsu.

Two of Caprico's subordinates. Yomazu is a dog-like samurai who uses an Eastern variation of Solid Script, writing kanji with his katana to produce different attacks. Kawazu is a giant rooster who fires explosive eggs from his mouth.
----
* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Yomazu, when combining his katana with his Solid Script magic phrase "pierce", is able to stab clean through Gajeel's metallicized arm.
* AmbitionIsEvil: During their return in the anime, they are quite shameless in their admission to get a MookPromotion to Seven Kin by taking out Fairy Tail's survivors.
* AscendedExtra: In the anime, they attempt to attack the injured Fairy Tail members one last time with Kain's help while Natsu and the others confront Hades, but are ultimately defeated by Fried, Bickslow, and Elfman.
* BashBrothers: They fight together and nearly prove to be more than Gajeel and Levy can handle.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Kawazu is definitely not one of Grimoire Heart's more threatening members appearance and ability-wise, but the fact that he can easily overwhelm two of Fairy Tail's most skilled fighters only reinforces Grimoire Heart's strength.
* EdibleAmmunition: Kawazu's magic of choice is weaponized egg bullets. The anime shows the eggs can be eaten when Elfman devours them to regain his stamina.
* EliteMook: Although they're fairly low among the ranks of Grimoire Heart, Gajeel is brought to near death taking the two of them down, and is horrified to learn they're nowhere near the Seven Kin's level. And in the anime, they prove themselves taking on Fried, Bickslow, and Elfman in a protracted battle (albeit with the three of them still weakened from the earlier fight with Rustyrose).
* EvilCounterpart: Yomazu is one to Levy, at least on a superficial level since they use different varieties of the same magic.
* EverythingsBetterWithSamurai: Yomazu wears a Japanese Samurai getup in a primarily European-esque setting.
* FaceFramedInShadow: It's easily overlooked, but Yomazu and Kawazu first appear in Chapter 131.
* FunnyAnimal: Yomazu and Kawazu are an anthropomorphic dog and chicken, respectively.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Yomazu uses his katana to draw his Solid Script magic.
* MagicKnight: Yomazu is as skilled a swordsman as he is a wizard. He also manages to fight well while disarmed in the anime.
* MoreDakka: Kawazu manages to do this with eggs instead of bullets. When Levy burns his eggs to a crisp, he responds simply by bombarding her with more eggs than she can deal with, which proves effective.
* OhCrap: Kawazu has one when Levy burns his eggs to a crisp. Yomazu has a bigger one when Gajeel starts munching on his sword, which gives him a massive power boost.
* {{Projeggtile}}: Kawazu's primary form of attack through his Egg Magic.
* RazorWind: Yomazu's attacks can slice thin air.
* SuperScream: Yowazu's "Gou" (Roar) creates a deafening noise.
* ThemeNaming: Their names share the ending "-azu".
* VerbalTic: Kawazu ends most of his sentences with "Peron!"
* WordsCanBreakMyBones: Yomazu uses Solid Script magic written through either his sword or hands. It's also much powerful than it looks as he manages to keep up with Fried's runes in a {{Filler}} battle, where he also reveals he can switch up the effects of his spells without needing to re-write simply by declaring different meanings to the ''kanji'', such as switching the effects of "Gou" (Roar) from a noun (where it acts as a deafening offensive noise) to a verb (where it enhances the power of another spell by making it "louder").
* WreckedWeapon: Yomazu's sword and armor get wrecked by Gajeel by the end of their fight, and during the fight with the injured Fairy Tail members in the anime he goes in with what's left of his armor and casting with his bare hands to compensate.
