* AuthorityGrantsAssKicking: The leader of the Yellow Scarves gang, and is the strongest of them all.

* DisabledLoveInterest: A variant. Celty can't talk, but not because she's mute; she doesn't even have a mouth. This isn't a problem for her and Shinra, since he usually doesn't even need to read her text messages to know what she wants to say.

* TalkingWithSigns: Via her PDA. This serves as her primary means of communication. When this isn't possible, she relies on a HandSignals.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Certy/Celty/Selty/Selti/Serti/Ceruti/Ceruty... this ''still'' happens after people have seen the second OP, given that ''every major character's name is displayed '''in English''' text on-screen''. It doesn't help that one of the earlier episodes shows a private chatroom with her name spelt as "Selty" despite the fact that Crunchyroll subs it as "Celty."

* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: A weirdly literal example, since her sword is an EvilWeapon and insane in its own right. One could say she's a [[IncrediblyLamePun Girl With Saika Weapon]].

* DecoyProtagonist: Despite the story opening with his arrival to Ikebukuro, and the subsequent hijinks he got involved into as he tried to fit in, Mikado is ''not'' the primary protagonist. Celty is.

* EvilCostumeSwitch: In season one, Mikado go-to outfit is a green and white shirt. Once his role shifts completely as [[spoiler:the leader of the Dollars and Aoba's faction, he starts wearing a dark blue jacket.]]

* TranquilFury: Since he isn't a kind of person who likes to express their emotions much, his anger always results in this. Yes, even [[spoiler: that scene with Namie]]. * CasanovaWannabe: He often flirt with girls, and many of his interactions with Mikado involve him inviting the latter to "pick up chicks" together.

* FatalFlaw: Kida is very bad with handling shame and guilt. [[spoiler:Part of the reason he drops out of school and disappears from Mikado's life is because he can't bear to face him after the whole fiasco with the Yellow Scarves]]. Izaya is fully aware of this and sometimes rubs salt in the wound by deliberately making plans that Kida could easily foil if he could only own up to his past failings and [[CanNotSpitItOut spit it out]].

* HandsOffParenting: His parents have an extremely laissez-faire parenting style and don't mind that their son has involved himself with a gang of delinquents or dropped out of high school. Mikado seems very aware of how his parents are, since even as a child, he was wondering how lenient they could be to let Masaomi wander around outside by himself at two a.m. in the night.

* LightningBruiser: As shown in his fight against Chikage, speed and agility is what he's all about - and some rudimentary martial arts skills. Despite Chikage's own freakish strength, Masaomi was dead even against him.

* MinoredInAssKicking: Masaomi usually does his ObfuscatingStupidity to glaze situations, with a hint of MagnificentBastard. However, underestimating him is very much an invitation for a serious ass kicking.

* OneManArmy: He's no Shizuo, but damn can he fight. He gets in many fights where he is heavily outnumbered, but always wins. Even Izaya outright admits you'd have to be either an idiot or ''very'' confident to pick a fight with him.

* SadClown: On the outside, he's cute, funny and always cracking jokes. On the inside, he's a complete and utter wreck.

* TranquilFury: [[spoiler: When he confronts Horada, he does it while acting like his cheerful self, even when talking about intending to kill him. This is in part because Kida sees the moment as a way to make-up for his failure to save Saki, and because he's something of a DeathSeeker at the time. That situation as well as the speech he made about the was anime-only, in the novels Kida had not known about Horada trying to take over the Yellow Scarves until he returned to the hideout.]]

* CelibateHero: Well, Heroine: She tries to avoid romance as much as possible, to the point of convincing herself that she's incapable to feel love. This is because she's the host of Saika and falling in love will make her vulnerable to possession by Saika.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Her mother killed her abusive father, and then killed herself, right in front of her]]; on top of that, immediately afterwards, she was possessed by Saika.

* DudeMagnet: Thanks to her assets, guys are always talking about her.

* ExtremeDoormat: To the extent that she considers herself a parasite feeding off the friendships she fosters with others, and to Saika as well.

* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mika, though Anri admits that both of them were just using each other as {{foil}}s. That is, until Mika went missing and got together with Seiji.

** To Mika. While Mika is a crazy stalker that only befriended Anri to have a {{foil}}, Mika has shown to truly care about Anri to some extent.

* SingleTargetSexuality: She eventually develops this for Mikado. Before falling for him, she thought she could never fall in love with anyone.

* ThirdPersonPerson: Her episodes tend to be narrated by other people, and even when she narrates, it's in third person. This serves to foreshadow her deep dissociation issues.

* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Has a difficulty with understanding this concept, and therefore she cannot tell apart the feelings she feels for Mikado, Masaomi, ''and'' Mika.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She has a passive, soft-spoken and gentle personality, although she won't let others push her around all the time. To seal the deal, she wears yukata on occasion.

* NonActionGuy: [[spoiler: Subverted later on in the novel.]]

* FreakinessShame: Celty is understandably ashamed of her lack of a head, but Shinra thinks it's rather sexy.

* ThreeAmigos: Mikado, Masaomi, and Anri quickly establish this dynamic.
