Jack Silk
A gifted carpenter who is confined to his house because of a curse. He is the father of Sadie and uncle to Gabriel Silk.- Curse: Was cursed by Cecily Fork years before the beginning of the book.
- Dark and Troubled Past: After his wife's death years ago, he was tricked into marrying an evil sorceress who wanted to use him to steal the Red King's cloak. However, when the cloak passed to Gabriel's father instead the sorceress was angry and cursed Jack.
- Stepford Smiler: Tries to be brave and optimistic despite his terrible situation. However, at times he is depressed and anxious.
Sadie Silk
Daughter of Jack Silk and cousin to Gabriel. She is a bright girl and helps Gabriel retrieve the lost cloak.
- Missing Mom: Her mother died in a car accident when she was six years old.
- Tragic Keepsake: An obsidian star necklace which was a gift from her mother.
Hetty Bean
Hetty Bean
Cook's assistant, and a new member of the Guardians. She has a warm and friendly personality.- Hero of Another Story: She only has a cameo role in the main series but plays a major supporting role in this book.
- Missing Mom: Her mother died in the same accident as Sadie's mum.

An evil sorceress who is after the Red King's cloak.- Black Widow: When she was younger she married two rich men and murdered them for their money.
- Dark Magical Girl: Is a powerful evil sorceress.
- Wicked Stepmother: Was one to Sadie before the beginning of the story, when she was married to Sadie’s father.
