Crew of the Enkidu

    Heorest Holt
Captain of the Enkidu and Liff's grandfather.
  • Ace Pilot: Flies a shuttle that is falling apart between the starship and the colony, over and over. Except that only happened in the simulation.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Holds himself together to hold the crew together, so they can hold the ship or the colony together. Makes hard decisions.

    Helena Garm
Chief of Security on the Enkidu.

    Gembel
Second Chief Scientist on the Enkidu. Cobbles together an ecosystem for the Imir colony. Except that only happened in the simulation.

    Esi
Classicist on the Enkidu.

    Olf
Chief Engineer on the Enkidu. Kept the ship running during the journey and designed low-tech machines for the colony.

Colonists of Imir

    Liff Holt
Granddaughter of the Enkidu's Captain Holt. Except when she's not, and is from the end of colony's history. For instance, in the base simulation.

    Uncle Molder
Liff's lazy, mean, and xenophobic uncle.

The starship Skipper

    Miranda
A Human woman who is a refugee from the out-farms, and Liff's favorite schoolteacher. She knows things nobody else does and doesn't know things everybody does. And she has strange ideas about the world and how it should be...

  • Brain Uploading: She's a copy of the original Miranda.
  • Cool Teacher: How Liff sees her.
  • Identity Breakdown: Is a human personality simulated by a horrifying alien assimilator, who remembers being horrified at said alien assimilator. She thinks she's over it, but she's really not. And that's where her trouble starts.
  • Split Personality. An alien version: thoughts and feelings from "Miranda"'s other recorded personalities leak into her awareness... which sometimes makes her Miranda personality lose coherence!
  • The Face: As the least strange member of the survey team, she does most of the talking.
  • Uncanny Valley: Miranda's body freezes while she breaks and pulls her mind together.

    Fabian
A Portiid wearing a human body. The version in the simulation is actually Miranda having an existential crisis.

  • Mr. Fixit: His role in the town of Landfall. He even names his shop Fabian's Fix-It.

    Portia
A Portiid wearing a human body. The version in the simulation is actually Miranda having an existential crisis.

  • Action Girl: As is common among Portiids.
  • Classical Hunter: Embraces this role, tracking down escaped hogs in the woods.
  • Tomboy: The townspeople notice how much she takes to hunting, guns, and manual labor.

    Paul
An octopus wearing nine human bodies. The version in the simulation is actually Miranda having an existential crisis.

    Kern
See her entry on Children of Ruin.

    Goethi and Gethli
Ambassadors from Rourke who join the expedition to Imir.

  • Clever Crows
  • Familiar: Liff interprets them as Kern's familiars. It doesn't help that they follow Kern's commands and perch on her shoulder.
  • Hive Mind: Each pair of Corvids form a complete brain.

Rourc

    RenĂ©e Pepper
Terraformer who survived the apocalypse of the ancients and made her best effort to get any life to survive on Rourke.

    Corvidsof Rourke
The intelligent and possibly sentient species of Corvids who became the dominant species on Rourke.
