!! Micheal Sanderson
!!! Works: Night Life
!!! Threads: Chatroom, Express, Chatroom II, Dig Site, City

Goes by Stiletto in the Chatroom threads, K-12Z-2 or K-14A-1 when in armor. A former cop with a specialty that might be termed "Robot Crimes SWAT" turned UN operative, Sanderson is one of the few people who survived his former employment, in the process gaining a great deal of combat experience. This made him valuable, to his surprise, and he was hired into the UN agency responsible for the control and policing of orbital and near-orbital weapons to help them fight their battles against people seeking to hijack orbital weapons, as well as test new equipment for that purpose.

* CharacterAlignment: Slides back and forth between LawfulNeutral and NeutralGood depending on circumstance and perceived seriousness of the situation/threat.
* CombatPragmatist: Close combat is for people with death wishes. Sit three blocks down the street from them and blast away. Shoot people with guns meant to stop combat androids. Shoot combat androids with guns meant to stop tanks.
* LastNameBasis: Even in the narration. Only Linna regularly calls him Micheal.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: Played with regarding Linna, who is fond of both Sanderson and Sanderson while he's at work in a suit of power armor, but seems to regard them as semi-separate people for reasons Sanderson cannot quite figure out.
* PoweredArmor: There is a Twelve-Zulu (K-12Z) or Fourteen-Able (K-14A) suit around somewhere if Sanderson is present. He's also made references to other marks with which he has experience.
* UnfazedEveryman: A survival trait from before his inclusion in the threads; Boomers are commonly disguised as people and the way in which they explode out of these disguises is designed for shock and horror value. Sanderson would not be alive if he was greatly susceptible to shock.

!! Linna Yamazaki (alias Saber Green)
!!! Works: Night Life
!!! Threads: Chatroom II, University, Mansion, City

Goes by SGLY in the Chatroom threads, and "Green" or "Saber Green" when armored up. A vigilante against the megacorps, with her own suit of power armor, and doubts about the efficacy of what she's doing and how she's doing it. Linna is looking for alternative means and methods now, and starting to clash with the vigilante team she's a part of. During her day job, she works for a stockbroker and has been quite successful. Linna tries to keep the halves of her life separate and tends to come across as normal to the point of superficiality when she's being the non-armored version of herself.

V2 Linna, who appears in Mansion and City, has abandoned her day job for a more officially sanctioned version of her night one as a permanent retainer and semi-member of the same organization as Sanderson. Nighttime Linna is the only one that exists, and she seems happier for it.

* DatingCatwoman: How she views her relationship with Sanderson, because she knows that it's exactly how the rest of the vigilante team she's part of would view it if they knew. V2 Linna does not have this problem, but has possibly gained enemies by losing it.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: Unless she's deliberately put her power armor on it might be hanging around like some kind of mechanical stalker.
* TheMasqueradeWillKillYourDatingLife: Something that genuinely scares Linna as possibility, and as such she is trying with increasing desperation to avert. V2 Linna no longer has this problem.
* PowerArmor: Saber Green's hardsuit.
* SecretIdentity: High-tech vigilante Saber Green.

!! Nara Rajinderpal
!!! Works: Night Life
!!! Threads: Dream, Dig Site, Mansion

Goes by K-12Z-5 or K-14A-7 when armored. An impossibly beautiful and frequently very abrasive woman of Indian descent, usually going by NR. Definitely not what she appears: Nara is actually a very advanced biomechanical robot, originally designed as the best sex toy money could buy. She escaped, and happened to land with an organization that didn't much care what she was, only what she knew. Her nature gives her a seemingly-instinctive aptitude for using technology that approaches her level of complexity, with the most prominent example being her skill with her K-suit.

* ArtificialHuman: The 33-S series is considered the best sex toy money can buy, and is utterly indistinguishable from human unless x-rayed or given a blood test.
* BrokenBird: At times appears this, but actually has better coping mechanisms. If she feels like using them.
* DrillSergeantNasty: NR is capable of using a superb voice with which to scream at people, and is not afraid to.
* GoodIsNotNice: In addition to going nuclear Jerkass without warning when she suspects someone is reacting to her looks, Nara is not shy about her desires for the graphic and painful deaths of personages from her early life, Genom in general, and anyone else who she feels is sufficiently soulless.

!! Samuel al-Faddil
!!! Works: Fanfic/InTheService, A Numbered Existence
!!! Threads: Cantina II, Cruise, City
!!! Inactive

A combat mage and cyborg, one of the first of a new type of soldiers for his nation. Born into the service and having always known that he would be a combat mage, he's come to terms well with the cybernetics and has lead a team in combat operations for several years.

His blade, Steelheart, is a minor character in its own right.

* AbsentAliens: His home universe runs this trope, but he finds the existence of aliens barely worth commentary usually.
* AbsurdlySharpBlade, via SharpenedToASingleAtom: Steelheart's mono-edged automatically-adjusting blade, which cannot be dulled or broken by contact with the cutting edge, is probably the least of the things it can do.
* AugmentedReality: Something else Steelheart has been touched on as doing.
* BioAugmentation: A relatively small version, intended mainly to toughen him up for the cybernetics, which if just dropped in an unaugmented human would kill them in a relatively short period through rapidly accelerated wear and tear.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: "I am the commander, and I am not allowed to fall apart." Always have a can-do attitude and a readiness to lead; even when you don't. Other emotions are something done in private.
* ChildSoldier: He enlisted at 12, spent a year in training, went to active duty at 13. And will defend to the death the fact that the Bureau does so, because they take care of their child soldiers so they will grow up sane and well-adjusted regardless.
* CombatPragmatist: One of the features that defines him to many people who've seen him fight is his willingness to do anything when not constrained otherwise by the rules of engagement.
* Cyborg: Unlike most such designs in fiction, he can expressly pass for human unless he's given an X-ray or weighed; he's roughly twice the weight he should be from body type. Aside from that, even poking or prodding him isn't going to give away what he is. Recently converted; not because his injuries made him unable to serve, but because he could get back into action quicker and serve better once he did. He was the test case for conversion. Apparently, he passed.
* FlyingBrick: A Bureau Navy combat mage isn't actually Superman. But they get by.
* KnightInSourArmor: He has occasional bouts with this, or something like it; his own description is "fears, rage, and despair". Due to TheChainsOfCommanding, he's usually careful to do it without an audience.
* SwissArmyWeapon: There is very little that Steelheart cannot do, via advanced dimensional mechanics allowing it to change shape or even swap out one form for another, and an onboard AI.
* SufficientlyAdvancedTechnology: And magic. It's not clear where the line between the two is drawn when dealing with Samuel.

!! Steelheart
!!! Works: Fanfic/InTheService
!!! Threads: Cruise, City
!!! Inactive

The AI built into Samuel's blade. It belonged to his grandfather originally when made, eighty years ago, and was at some point ordered to protect his descendants; it regards this order as binding above all others. The sensibilities of the blade are of a different time, and even Samuel finds it excessively bloodthirsty. Has been known to act without orders in accessing some of its more esoterically destructive functions, which it should technically not be able to do.

* ThePowerOfHate: Unlike more recently activated AIs, Steelheart is capable of a wide emotional range. Unfortunately, it's never met someone it much liked, and anyone who raises a weapon against an al-Faddil gets to experience what it actually means to have an AI hate them.
* SatelliteCharacter: Steelheart does not often interact with people aside from Samuel, apparently out of choice. When it does, it's frequently contemptuous of them.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: The Deathblow module causes causes a temporary breach to a dimension that can only be mathematically described; no effort to interact with the dimension physically or magically works. As such, every passive method of sensing perceives the breach as blackness; every active one does not register its existence.

!! Muhammad al-Faddil
!!! Works: Fanfic/InTheService, A Numbered Existence, Fanfic/LifeAfterHayate
!!! Threads: Dig Site

A professional intelligence officer, head of Naval Counterintelligence, which despite the name handles both spy-hunting and spying. As such, Muhammad commands immense personal power, able to start wars or sterilize planets with the right words in the right ears. He will never state this and to those who do not know him personally, appears as just another Navy combat mage. This has contributed to his reputation as the monster in the closet or under the bed.

Samuel al-Faddil is his son.

* AbsurdlySharpBlade, via SharpenedToASingleAtom: Smoke is very similar to Steelheart in this sense.
* AugmentedReality: As above.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Has a rigid code of personal behavior and politeness. It does not, however, mean he feels obligated to be more than verbally nice to those marked as enemies.
* CombatPragmatist: This code also does not extend beyond the point at which it is acceptable to draw a weapon.
* FlyingBrick: A Bureau Navy combat mage isn't actually Superman, though at times it can seem that way. Muhammad is less so than his son but still not to be trifled with.
* GoodIsNotDumb: Muhammad believes in the ideals the Bureau espouses. His job title, on the other hand, means he is not completely beholden to them.
* GoodIsNotNice: "The Bureau needed a man to do the terrible things it never wanted to, someone it could trust with the powers it had but hated. They chose me."
* SwissArmyWeapon: As Steelheart. Arguably much worse; most Devices are built in a way that deliberately limits their power. These features are not present in Smoke's design, which means it is possessed of abilities that, while not technically combat-useful, can be quite horrifying.
* SufficientlyAdvancedTechnology: As above.

!! Se
!!! Works: Fanfic/InTheService, A Numbered Existence, Fanfic/LifeAfterHayate
!!! Threads: Ren Island, Character Inn
!!! Inactive

An impossibly ancient combat construct, who has outlived the civilization that created her and now serves a different one. Tends to display somewhat predatory but not typically threatening behaviors.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality: The Knight's Code she lives by has very little in common with any similar institution, being primarily concerned with loyalty to one's lord or lady and the rapid and thorough destruction of the enemy, in that order.
* DeathIsCheap: If threatened, she will respond with "The worst you can do is kill me, and that has been done before." Se simply doesn't stay dead.
* TheFettered: A command from her current lord is unbreakable, quite literally.
* LivingRelic: Belka is dead. Se is not. Her attitudes and morality reflect a civilization that no longer exists and she's very much aware of it.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: At two levels of regress. The epithet she is going by is Se Ytruck Gjinchar, but she calls herself Se most of the time, aware that others would find the full name difficult to pronounce. This may or may not amuse her; it translates from the local dialect it's in as "blade in the night", so people are calling her "Blade".
* TheUnfettered: While she embraces some level of normal morality in situations that do not require the Knight's Code, creating one where it does apply results in her limits being whatever level of force and brutality she thinks she can justify to her lord. He is apparently willing to be flexible when the situation calls for it.

!! Rein
!!! Works: Fanfic/LifeAfterHayate
!!! Threads: Character Inn

Se's youngest relative. Almost. Possessed of a childlike curiosity, and arguably a child herself, though she doesn't always look or act it.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Unlike her nearest relatives, this is actually averted; Rein is not bound by the Knight's Code and subscribes to something like normal morality.
* EncyclopedicKnowledge: Rein is effectively the embodiment of the most extensive existing collection of mage and mage-related knowledge. And she's always learning more.
* ItAmusedMe: A relatively mild form, but some people have gotten contradictory behavior from her solely because their confusion seems to please her.

!! Priss Asagiri
!!! Works: Night Life
!!! Threads: Character Halloween

A sarcastic, confrontational, and sometimes hard-drinking power armored vigilante, whose day job (and night job) is as a rock singer. Despite her notable negative personality traits, she can be surprisingly self-aware.

* DoesNotLikeMen: If they make passes at her, anyways. Otherwise she's neutral (for her) towards them, but doesn't seem to bond.
* HiddenDepths: Lover of cyberpunk literature. Considering she lives in a cyberpunk world, this sometimes results in her being GenreSavvy.
* Music: Given her day job, touches a lot of tropes here. She also tends to make similes to various bands or express her opinions on any incidental music.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: She will protest this is why she signed up with the vigilante group, for the self-funding sideline. Actually, it's for the Revenge.

!! Tsukinoyo Higoshi

A somewhat confrontational woman of apparent Japanese descent with a rather single-minded focus on her job at most times, unless dealing with someone of perceived skill in her chosen profession: freelance starfighter pilot.

!! The Gluvpaki
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original and spinoff)
!!! Threads: N/A, species

A reptilian alien species somewhat resembling intelligent dromaeosaurids, the gluvpaki are neurologically wired such that they are almost uniformly religious. Their dominant government, the Gluvpaki Theocracy, is governed by a religion known simply as the Faith. The Theocracy has generally had poor relations with humans, but the gluvpaki are not an inherently hostile species.

Tropes applying to the gluvpaki in general include:

* AfterTheEnd: The original native sophonts of Gluvpakis, referred to as the ur-gluvpaki, were obliterated in a nuclear warThe truth is actually more complicated, but this never came out in the threads known as the Great Devastation that turned the planet, already somewhat inhospitable, into a desert hellhole. The modern gluvpaki are a true-breeding mutation of the ur-gluvpaki that adapted to live under these conditions. Very little of ur-gluvpaki culture has survived, and many modern gluvpaki are interested in learning more about it.
* LizardFolk: Unlike the qrtxians, the gluvpaki much more obviously physically resemble Earth lizards than humanoids, though their biology is in some ways closer to that of dinosaurs[=/=]birds.
* NamedAfterTheirPlanet: Inverted. The gluvpaki homeworld, Gluvpakis, is named after the Prophet who founded the Faith. And the Prophet Gluvpakis himself is named after the species, whose name translates as "followers of God the One". So the planet is named after the species.
* PlanetOfHats: Zig-zagged. The gluvpaki's uniformly theistic nature closely resembles the trope. But gluvpaki religion manifests itself in many different ways, and they are hardly unified politically.
* ScaryDogmaticAliens: Very intentionally subverted. The gluvpaki appear in many ways to resemble a stereotypical "religious zealot" take on the trope, being a physically intimidating, reptilian species with a religion that they fanatically follow and a dislike of humanity. However, the Theocracy's conflict with humanity is entirely based on territorial disputes and realpolitik; the Faith actively discourages conversion by the sword and the eradication of non-believers. The average Theocracy gluvpaki is no more evil (or good) then the average human. And the Theocracy is only the largest gluvpaki government, with some others having friendlier relationships with humans.
* SpaceColdWar: The Theocracy and humanity have been locked in one of these almost since first contact, due mostly to territorial reasons. Nearly 400 years later (the setting of the spinoff), this situation remains - though tensions have risen and fallen on several occasions, they are currently high again due to a brief "hot" war in 2396.

!! The Qrtxians
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original and spinoff)
!!! Threads: N/A, species

Effectively TheGreys with some reptilian characteristics, the qrtxians were the first species to make contact with humans, in the form of an abortive AlienInvasion. Their species was for a long time intensely monocultural and xenophobic. During the time between the original comics and their spinoff, however, this changed, and the qrtxians fractured into many subcultures, some of which are much more tolerant of aliens and internal dissent.

Tropes applying to the qrtxians in general include:

* AbsoluteXenophobe: The original qrtxian government, while not desiring to exterminate other species, was intensely hostile towards them, dismissing all other civilizations as inferior. Apart from a token ambassador to the Galactic Council - who other qrtxians tended to shun - and a few token embassies on their homeworld of Qrtx, the qrtxians largely avoided dealing with aliens and persecuted those of their number who did so. The events of the original comic caused this to change, however, and following the fracturing of the monoculture qrtxians of the 25th century are no more or less generally tolerant of other species than most species in the setting.
* CrystalSpiresAndTogas: This appears to be the standard qrtxian aesthetic, with their cities constructed from advanced materials that appear crystalline to the naked eye, and with most qrtxians dressing in robes or other loose garments made of "smartfabric" (programmable clothing composed of nanomachines). This is lampshaded by Qrlil in Resort, who comes close to directly referencing the trope by name.
* TheGreys[=/=]TheReptilians: The qrtxians are in many respects the standard greys of UFO mythology: grey aliens with large heads and eyes and elongated limbs. However, they are actually warm-blooded (though heat-loving) reptiles; their grey "skin" is actually fine scales and their eyes are obviously reptilian. Their culture also differs from most standard representations of Greys, and they wear clothes. Interestingly (and disturbingly to many qrtxians), while the qrtxians did in fact monitor pre-contact Earth and abduct some humans as test subjects, legends of "grey aliens" in-universe actually predate the first qrtxian surveys of Earth in the late 1960s.
* HigherTechSpecies: The qrtxians are more advanced than any other species in their setting (except perhaps the cthwui), possessing very advanced nanotechnology and other forms of advanced technology. Unknown to most other species, and even most qrtxians, this is based off of inherited Trjql Qrl'k technology that the qrtxians can reproduce but not entirely comprehend. As a result, they eventually lose their technological advantage.
* SpaceElves: A deconstruction of the "Enlightened Mystical Race" form, though they are more scholarly than mystical. The qrtxians are a highly technologically-advanced species with a fairly philosophical and utopian society. However, they are also extremely intolerant of internal dissent and xenophobic. As a result, most other species' attitudes to the qrtxians range from poor to hostile, and the qrtxians' own government is quite corrupt.
* TheUnpronounceable: Almost all qrtxian names (including that of their species) lack vowels. This seems to be mostly a transliteration artifact of some kind, however, as they are reasonably easy for humans to pronounce with the right guidelines and the qrtxian language sounds rather musical and birdlike.
* UpliftedAnimal: Though it's not widely known to outsiders, the qrtxians are actually an uplifted species. Around roughly 400 CE, a precursor species the qrtxians call the Trjql Qrl'k came to their homeworld and modified a species of pre-sapient, semi-arboreal, herbivorous reptiles into the modern qrtxians. Their motives are unknown, with speculations ranging from using the qrtxians as cannon fodder against an enemy precursor species, to using the qrtxians as a vessel for their culture, to seeking to create "middlemen" so that they would not have to deal with other species themselves. The one thing that seems certain (the official qrtxian party line to the contrary) is that their motives were not selfless, as most other information about the Trjql Qrl'k suggests they were AbusivePrecursors.

WMG:21st-Century Characters

Characters from my original comics, set in an alternate early 21st century. All of these characters have been retired from the [=CDTs=] with the conclusion of their original story, though Qrlil might show up again once and another incarnation of the Messenger could be created.

!! Alex
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Resort

An evil wizard from a parallel reality where magic works (though originally born on Earth). He's very much aware of his own stereotypical nature and intentionally plays it up for fun. The closest thing to a single BigBad for my comics.

* Asexual: This was only hinted at in Resort.
* CardCarryingVillain: Meant as something of a reconstruction, particularly in that he exists as one in a world with a solid fourth wall. He does not actually view himself as evil (believing there is no such thing) but is aware that most people do, so he feels he might as well play it up a bit.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Virgil gives him the creeps.
* EvilVersusEvil: Most of his actions so far in Resort have involved harassing the other "villains" present, though it's mainly just out of boredom.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Comes across as the real deal more often then not, since he only drops the act when genuinely angry - something that doesn't happen often.
* ItAmusedMe: Pretty much his motive for anything at this point (besides AGodAmI his long-term plans). He's easily bored, and powerful enough not to worry about most anything, so most of what he does is meant to keep him entertained.
* LackOfEmpathy: Another defining feature, and one of the primary reasons why he tends not to care about what goes on around him.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: Likes to affect this, though his appearance tends to be slightly out of date.
* Really Two Hundred Years Old: He was born around the turn of the nineteenth century, but is biologically thirty thanks to AWizardDidIt magical cloning schenigans.
* SorcerousOverlord: Within his home setting, he is generally either the wizard-tyrant of a small nation or striving to become so.
* TomTheDarkLord: As noted above, he is the closest thing to a primary villain for his original story, yet "Alex" is not a particularly intimidating name.
* VillainsOutShopping: All he wants to do in Resort is have some time off.

!! Havlak
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Resort

A priest (or technically "tribune-priest") of the Gluvpaki Theocracy. He was created specifically for the threads in an attempt to examine what the "average" gluvpaki is like.

* BadassPreacher: Subverted. The Faith's clergy were originally supposed to be like this, as demonstrated by their warlike attire and Spear. However, this has become largely ceremonial, and Havlak is neither a violent individual nor skilled at any form of combat.
* CallASmeerpARabbit: His translation software refers to his drink of choice as beer (always in italics), but it's not actually human beer or even alcoholic.
* CapitalLettersAreMagic: Makes extensive use of these when describing his religion (and you can hear them, too): he follows the Faith preached by the Prophet about the One...
* TheEveryman: The gluvpaki equivalent, anyway - he's hardly an everyman for human readers.
* GoodShepherd: Played with. He is apparently a benevolent leader to the people of his village, and is willing to try to help even the human (a species he dislikes) Retriever in Resort when he perceives her as a lost soul. However, when the Retriever interprets this as a cynical attempt to recruit her for his universe's human-gluvpaki conflict, Havlak is willing to propose that his superiors use her as a spy.
* SignatureDevice: His Spear, a spear that serves as the symbol of the gluvpaki Faith.

!! Clarence Jones
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Express

An agent for the United Nations Council on Xenotechnological Control (UNCXC), a quasi-sanctioned United Nations agency that is attempting to acquire various supernatural and technological artifacts from parallel universes. He is slightly mentally unstable due to precursor technology he's been enhanced with.

* ConsummateProfessional: He thinks he's this, but while he appears extremely stoic and unfazed by just about everything, his arrogance and occasional mental instability prevent him from truly qualifying.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Although cybernetics are a fairly normal thing in his original world, the precursor tech he uses to detect paranormal phenomena does not integrate well with the human nervous system. As a result, he's slightly unstable.
* ElectronicTelepathy: Via his implants.
* FearlessFool: He is extremely confident in his own abilities... probably overly so.
* IDidntMeanToTurnYouOn: In a bizarre case, the EM field generated by his precursor sensors produces FantasticArousal in the electromagnetic-sensitive Tasca.
* ImpersonationGambit: In Express, he attempts to pass himself off to the local UN agents as a member of another department who they weren't briefed on. Although he doesn't expect it to work, it seemingly does. In truth the other agents saw through him immediately (since the UNCXC doesn't exist in their world) but chose to play along, and both groups wind up working together well until Violet eventually comes clean.
* KnightTemplar: He believes that acquiring the artifacts he looks for will give Earth a significant edge over the other species in his universe, and he's prepared to do anything to get them.
* TheMenInBlack: Partially an InvokedTrope, partially the real deal. He takes more inspiration from some of the older aspects of the "men in black" stories then is usual.
* MrSmith: Although not actually an alias, the name "Jones" is meant to resemble this. Lampshaded in Express when he notes that it's his real name upon introducing himself to a fellow agent.
* TheNondescript: Subverted. Although he has no distinct physical features, his bizarre mannerisms and conspicuously-unusual attire make him much more noticeable than a more physically-distinctive person. (In his defense, blending in is not actually a priority due to the sort of places he and Violet are usually sent).
* TheStoic: Although a couple of things in Express do give him pause, except for the Spear's emanations nothing significantly fazes him, up to and including being taken hostage.

!! Violet Lee
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Express

A mercenary who serves as Jones' partner and bodyguard. She's more or less OnlyInItForTheMoney and more professional then he is, despite a habit of drinking on duty.

* Asexual: This was only hinted at in the thread, however.
* BerserkButton: Her attitude towards most of humanity is apathetic-to-mildly-negative, but she mentions that she deeply despises both "right-wing religious nuts" and Luddites. Both are implicitly for the same reason - a dislike of anti-science ideology.
* CoolShades: While she otherwise dresses in shabby, secondhand clothes, for some reason she wears a pair of expensive and stylish sunglasses at almost all times. Doubles as SinisterShades given her morally dubious nature.
* ConsummateProfessional: Like Jones, she views herself as this, and probably comes closer to qualifying. While she's extremely professional in the sense that nothing distracts her from the job, she still does have a number of personal quirks.
* DarkActionGirl: A PunchClockVillain version, who more or less wound up acting as one of the "good guys" in Express due to her desire to keep the situation under control and avoid wantonly slaughtering civilians.
* DepletedPhlebotinumShells: She keeps a number of special rounds (mentioned as including silver, incendiary, and others) for her custom-made pistol, explicitly to use on nonhuman threats.
* ElectronicTelepathy: Via her implants.
* HatesBeingTouched: More precisely, she hates being touched on her bare skin and keeps herself heavily swaddled in clothes at all times. Though not stated in the thread, this is actually because she is acutely germaphobic.
* Jerkass: She's fairly rude, most notably demonstrated in Express when she reacts to Noah saying he's dying by making fun of his DramaticPause and asking him to try not to bleed on anything.
* NeverGetsDrunk: The primary reason why she allows herself to drink on duty is a virtual immunity to the effects of even strong drink.
* NoodleIncident: She makes several references to these during Express, but in particular repeatedly mentions that she really hates Russia because of an unspecified incident in Leningrad during a past mission. Doubles as an CrypticBackgroundReference, as Leningrad no longer exists under that name in the real world.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: In Express, she takes advantage of her alcohol resistance by pretending to get extremely drunk while insisting she's perfectly sober, in order to get Isaac Rose to underestimate her. It works, though it winds up not really being relevant to the thread.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: She explicitly says that she'll work for anyone who pays her enough money, even people she hates.
* PunnyName: When spoken aloud, her name is meant to sound a little like "violently", which is how she usually handles problems. This may be deliberate, as it's possibly an alias.
* SirSwearsALot: About a third of her sentences in Express contain some form of profanity, usually "fuck".

!! The Messenger
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Dream

An artificial intelligence created by the precursor species the qrtxians refer to as the Trjql Qrl'k. It apparently has some kind of directive to watch over Qrlil.

* FantasticRacism: It is openly contemptuous of anything that isn't a transcendent intelligence (a term here meaning post-Singularity AI). Ironically, the Messenger itself would probably not qualify as one, though its creators do.
* FreudianTrio: It briefly forms a bizarre one in Dream, acting as TheSpock with Kokabiel as TheKirk and the Lost as TheMcCoy. The rivalry between the id and superego is taken to an especially ridiculous level, as the Messenger and the Lost both consider the other subsentient and refuse to even communicate except through Kokabiel.
* MindHive: Though functionally a single entity, it is actually a gestalt composed of numerous sub-personalities. A debate among these sub-personalities was briefly shown in Dream.
* MouthOfSauron: As the name suggests, it's nothing but a messenger and mouthpiece for the true Trjql Qrl'k - though the gestalt that makes up its personality consists of stripped-down versions of various Trjql Qrl'k personalities.
* SinisterGeometry: Its manifestation in Dream is as a perfect floating sphere, shot through with veinlike glowing lights.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Subverted: its voice does sound like many other voices speaking together, but unlike the trope they aren't speaking in harmony but at different volumes and times, making it hard for listeners to understand. This may be intentional, as the Messenger despises audible communication as "primitive and inefficient".

An "evil clone" of one of the main characters from his home canon, he has since undergone a HeelFaceTurn and now works for the government, though he still suffers from ScienceRelatedMemeticDisorder. He came to the Cantina thanks to a test of an inter-dimensional portal that did not go according to plan.

* ArbitrarySkepticism: DefiedTrope; in fact, he lectures Vincent on supposedly showing it.
* TheAtoner: Hasn't demonstrated it much yet, though.
* BeardOfEvil: He has a goatee grown specifically in honor of his origins as an "EvilTwin" of sorts. Subverted, though, in that he only grew it after his HeelFaceTurn.
* BerserkButton: He explodes into a rant over Vincent using the phrase "space is big" (a RunningGag in his home canon) and a significantly longer one when Iveya suggests that people are more interesting then science.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: His ultimate fate, thanks to the fact that he was not being written very successfully.
* GenreSavvy: The original Steven Phan was a science-fiction nerd, and as Doctor Steven's personality was designed to be closely based off of his, he has a lot of Genre Savviness about speculative fiction elements in the Cantina.
* InsufferableGenius: A mild case.
* MadScientist: Self-admitted, and with something of a sense of humor about it.
* MoralMyopia: He has very little respect for those with no interest in science.
* ScienceRelatedMemeticDisorder: Called "monomaniacal savant syndrome". He normally keeps it controlled with medication, but something about the Cantina is causing it to wear off faster then normal.
* TerseTalker: A side effect of the MSS, only appearing when the medication began to wear off.

!! Qrlil
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (original)
!!! Threads: Cantina, Cantina II, Chatroom, Resort, Dream, Capital

A qrtxian ambassador to the Galactic Council (effectively the UN in space). She is a highly unusual member of her species. Posted as "roswell61" in Chatroom.

Picture done here by Tropers/LoniJay.

* AlienArtsAreAppreciated: Has a fondness for other species' speculative fiction. She claims it's IReadItForTheArticles just for research purposes...
* BadDreams: She had vivid dreams almost every night in Resort; except for one that was implicitly an EroticDream about one of the Sunyo brothers, these all seem to have been nightmares. Other threads indicate she suffers from these fairly often in her home universe as well. Though the details weren't established, they're indicated to be why she finds discussions about the Eyes and Teeth and other Eldritch Abominations frightening.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Although this hasn't been shown very often in the threads.
* BiTheWay: Qrtxian sexual orientations don't equate to human ones, and Qrlil has a heterosexual preference, but she's certainly open to both possibilities.
* B-Movie Fan: Of both human B-movies and the equivalent in other cultures.
* Can't Hold Her Liquor: Although, to be fair, she did slam back the original GargleBlaster.
* CrossCulturalHandshake: Qrtxians incline their heads to greet each other, and she has had to learn what "handshaking" involves.
* CrypticBackgroundReference: Has made a few, especially in regards to the g'vek, another reptilian species she has visited.
* CulturalPosturing: She engages in this occasionally, particularly in the Chatroom, but does so to a lesser extent than many qrtxians.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Although it wasn't originally intended this way, the part of her character arc in the threads dealing with her attraction to aliens wound up being closely analogous to a ComingOutStory.
* FantasticRacism: Except at a subconscious level, she's free of the speciesism most qrtxians exhibit, but she is prejudiced against [=AIs=].
* FullNameBasis: She starts off this way with most people, but changes after getting to know them. She did keep it up with Vincent for a bit in an attempt to come across as "cute".
* GreenEyedMonster: She took an immediate dislike to Saliha[=/=]Angua after they met, which she pretty quickly identified as being jealousy. Saliha interpreted it as romantic jealousy over her relationship with Xavier, but it was actually caused by Qrlil's envy of Saliha's less repressed nature. Ironically, both of them did wind up in a love triangle with Xavier later on, but by that point Qrlil was too friendly to Saliha to feel very jealous.
* HowUnscientific: Her reaction to some of the posts on the Chatroom, especially those that related to interspecies reproduction. Averted in the Cantina, though, because she believed none of it was real anyway. Even when she did realize it was real, she's still been more intrigued than anything else by the supernatural phenomena she's encountered (except, strangely, telepathy).
%%* TheIdealist
* IncompatibleOrientation: Had a crush on Asexual Vincent for a while.
* InterspeciesRomance: She has what amounts to a fetish for aliens, and is currently in a relationship with Xavier.
* IntriguedByHumanity: Her attitude towards humans is ambivalent at best, but she is definitely interested in them (though not as much as she is in some other species... in multiple senses of "interested").
* InVinoVeritas: Drinking the Gargle Blaster in Cantina II brought a lot of aspects of her personality she doesn't widely advertise to the surface. She's been more open since then.
* KlingonsLoveShakespeare: Qrtxians - or at least this qrtxian - apparently love piano music. She's also demonstrated a familiarity with the works of Shakespeare himself and those of H.P. Lovecraft, though she finds the latter more unsettling than enjoyable.
* KlingonScientistsGetNoRespect: The qrtxian government needs ambassadors who like to deal with other species, but they don't think highly of them as people. As a result, she's fairly ostracized.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: She believed the other Cantina patrons were representations of human fictional concepts.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: With Xavier, though neither of them is dwelling on that part of it much.
* MoralityPet: To Sigmund, of all people.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: She disagrees extensively with much of qrtxian culture. Due to the highly collective nature of that culture, she feels pretty guilty about it, though less so over time.
* NeuralImplanting: Via her "backup", a cybernetic implant.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Even when she believes the waiter isn't real.
* NotAMorningPerson: Every single morning in Resort had her dragging herself miserably out of bed. She generally cheered up after getting some food and talking to people.
* PingPongNaivete: At least as far as human culture goes - she knows much more then most of her species (or the average alien of any species, in fact), but it's still very spotty.
* ProudScholarRaceGirl: Comes across as something of a nerd by human standards, in fact, though in this case it is normal behavior for her species.
* RoswellThatEndsWell: Her Chatroom username is an in-universe nod to the trope, though she says that it's just a joke and the crash really was just a weather balloon.
* SpockSpeak: An InvokedTrope.
** As of Resort, though she still speaks in a rather stilted fashion, she is no longer unwilling to use contractions.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: InUniverse. Vincent initially assumed she was male in the Cantina, and she also had to correct a post that called her "he" on the Chatroom.
* TheXenophile: While Qrlil mostly uses the word "xenophilia" to refer to her attraction to aliens, she is also a xenophile in the conventional sense, and likes meeting people from new species or cultures. This trait, unusual in the xenophobic qrtxians, is what led her to become an ambassador in the first place.

WMG:Flying Nerd Crew

The trio of crew-beings of the private starship Flying Nerd, consisting of the two original pilots and the qrtxian they rescued in the event that kicked off the story. "The" protagonists.

!!Harry Carter
!!!Works: Untitled Comics (spinoff)
!!!Threads: University, Dig Site, Mansion, Halloween

A human reporter for the 25th-century equivalent of a tabloid. He owns and pilots a ship called the Flying Nerd. Since being caught up in a series of adventures, he has become increasingly nervous.

* FanOfThePast: He's interested in the early 20th century and the post-FirstContact mid-21st century: both eras that saw a great opening up of the world to ordinary people. Unlike most cases of the trope, he is not familiar with the pop culture of the period his readers are living in, though he does have a little exposure to it thanks to Cecelia.
* GenreSavvy: Deconstructed: his knowledge of fiction, especially how often things go wrong for characters in it, is part of what fuels his paranoia.
* IntrepidReporter: Humorously subverted. He claims to be a "reporter" and tries to give off a dashing air; however, the nature of his job is extremely mundane (apart from the space travel), the media distributor that employs him is something of a sleazy tabloid, and his reaction to finding himself caught up in real adventures has been less than dashing.
* MultiethnicName: Indicative of the blurring of human cultures in the future, he has an American name despite looking vaguely Chinese.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: As noted by Priss in Halloween, for a reporter he seems to have relatively little interest in asking questions or following up potential stories. Of course, as mentioned above he's not really a reporter in the modern sense, and just tries to give off the impression of being one.
* ProperlyParanoid: Since meeting up with Krajn, he has become involved in a series of highly dangerous adventures that have led him to view each new situation with an eye for potential threats. Although he's often wrong, when danger really does strike he's increasingly unsurprised.
* RummageSaleReject: His favorite outfit is a bizarre mixture of clothing from the 20th, 21st, and 22nd centuries, to the point that it makes his Halloween costume (which is rather garish in its own right) look normal.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Exaggerated: he not only immediately leaps on any insinuations that he has a romantic interest in Krajn, but is quick to deny that they're even friends of any sort. Unusually for this trope, he's totally sincere - he is not physically attracted to qrtxians and (while he'll gradually grow to like her more) at this stage of his development doesn't get along well with Krajn.
* TotallyRadical: Played for laughs - he grew up on the planet New California, which deliberately encouraged a kind of surfer dude lingo among its citizens, which he periodically peppers his speech with.

!!!Works: Untitled Comics (spinoff)
!!!Threads: University

A cthwui who acts as Harry's partner and copilot, who currently identifies as female. She is much more than she appears.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Except in the broadest sense, all of her portrayal in University is now out of date.
* EccentricMentor: Underneath her bizarre behavior, she tends to be a pretty reliable mentor to Harry, and may be trying to steer both him and Krajn towards a larger goal.
* MetaGuy: She's fascinated - or at least pretends fascination - with early 21st century human science fiction, often comparing it to her current situation or even acting like she's in a sci-fi TV show. The meta aspect is purely from the audience's standpoint, however, as no one else knows what she's talking about and generally considers it just another of her quirks, and Cecelia herself certainly isn't aware of being a fictional character.
* SomeCallMeTim: "Cecelia" is certainly not her actual name, which is unpronounceable by humans. Its exact origins have not yet been specified, however.
* StarfishAliens: The cthwui are vaguely reminiscent of huge blue crayfish, and "see" through heat-sensitive nodules on their backs. They have three (or five, depending on how you count) distinct sexes that are only loosely analogous to human sexes, and can switch between them almost at will. Their mental processes seem to be very different from humans as well.

!!! Threads: University, Dig Site, Mansion, Archipelago, Halloween

A young female qrtxian agent for a mysterious organization called the Qvn Jxilkr. The protagonist of her story, more or less.

%%Will add more tropes here later.
* ActionGirl: Qrtxians don't draw gender lines when it comes to fighting, and she's an able if largely unpracticed combatant, though it's not the only role she's meant to serve as an agent.
* BiTheWay: Like most qrtxians, she is bisexual, though in practice she's only really been interested in one person - another female Qvn Jxilkr named Ghiln.
* PursuedProtagonist: While the full details haven't yet been established in the Character Development Threads, this is how she met Harry and Cecelia. It's also a bit of a subversion of the normal formula of the trope, as she's the main protagonist and Harry (the more stereotypical male human lead who rescues her) is just the deuteragonist.
* SkilledButNaive: Although she is smart and well-trained, she has had only a couple of months of practical experience with the real world. Unlike many instances of the trope, she's not a WideEyedIdealist, but she does have some difficulty adjusting her preconceptions to events.
* SmugSuper: She has fairly serious ego problems and takes a great deal of pride in her Qvn Jxilkr enhancements. However, it's downplayed in both that her abilities aren't significantly different from a baseline qrtxian and that she does have some self-awareness about it.

WMG:Agavhi Militarized Security

A duo of alien mercenaries with pretensions to being a full private military company.

!!Reyondh 'Rey' Agavhi
!!! Works: Untitled Comics (spinoff)
!!! Threads: Fair

An alien mercenary from a humanoid species called the orl. Details to be added as they come out in the threads.

* ActionGirl: She has at least twenty years of mercenary experience and skill with both ranged and hand-to-hand combat (though she vastly prefers the former).
* AlienBlood: While not directly seen in the threads yet, she's indicated that orl have blue blood.
* BadassLongcoat: She wears a long, faded-red smartfabric coat that she attaches her guns to.
* BloodKnight: She heads off to investigate a possible sniper in Fair mostly because she's bored and thinks a fight would be exciting, and it's implied that her whole mercenary career is driven by a love of combat as much as money.
* CoolShades: She wears huge metallic sunglasses that take up most of her face (since orl have very large eyes). They serve both as a HUD and scanner of some kind, and as literal sunglasses - her species comes from a much lower-light environment than Earth.
* GreenSkinnedSpaceBabe: The orl all have green skin in a deliberate usage of the trope. However, it's played with slightly: Rey's ethnic group have mottled green skin, which makes her look more like someone in camouflage paint than an Orion or the like.
* InsistentTerminology: She is a self-proclaimed colonel, insisting that her two-sophont team be referred to as a full-fledged military security company. This is actually more about abusing certain bureaucratic loopholes in her home setting than about ego, though.
* JerkassFacade: She acts like she's a hard-bitten and jaded mercenary, but while she definitely does have a ruthless side, it's kind of an exaggerated pose. Best shown so far in Fair with her aghast reaction to Dimitri's description of "dropping rocks" on planets as an acceptable tactic.
* LovelyAngels: She and Iris of Halstant seem to be heading in this direction in Fair after teaming up to investigate a possible threat, which has shown off both contrasting and similar parts of their personalities.
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: As noted, she is a mercenary - the head (and one of only two members of) an organization called "Agavhi Militarized Security". As the name suggests, they do both private security work and act as part of larger military operations. Currently she's been hired by the Gluvpaki Theocracy to guard some kind of excavation.
* TronLines: Her glasses have bright glowing blue lines on them. Their purpose has not yet been elaborated on in the threads, but is actually [[spoiler:entirely to look cool and techy - they have no actual function and she shuts them off whenever she needs stealth.]]

!!Kel Yuzgalan
!!!Works: Untitled Comics (spinoff)
!!!Threads: Fair

An alien mercenary from a vaguely avian species called the shvuim. He is Rey's partner.

* GeniusBruiser: A mild version of the trope. While not really a "genius", despite being a large and heavily armored mercenary, he's actively and eagerly interested in the world around him and how things work.
* GentleGiant: Downplayed: he's still an effective and ruthless mercenary, but he's nicer than he looks and certainly nicer than his partner.
* PoweredArmor: He wears a silvery suit of power armor in Fair. It has adjustable levels of strength enhancement and sensors that selectively allow it to transmit physical sensations to Kel as though he was not wearing it, but otherwise it hasn't really been detailed yet.

!!! Threads: Inn

A very eccentric, socially-stunted female gluvpaki conspiracy theorist.

Currently listing only tropes directly shown in the threads.

* AugmentedReality: How her cybernetic implants generally display information to her.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Played with. She's continually surprised by being treated politely in Inn, but it's not so foreign to her that it seriously affects her behavior. However, she actively attempts to befriend Akiel because she can tell that Akiel (who is not normally a nice person) is making an effort to be nice to her.
* CapitalLettersAreMagic: She is prone to capitalizing things that are important to her, such as "They" (see below) and "the Truth".
* Cloudcuckoolander: In addition to her belief in conspiracy theories (discussed below), she engages in many other bizarre behaviors including repeating words she finds interesting, switching between conversational topics apparently at random, constantly speaking her internal monologue aloud because she dislikes thinking, and generally disregarding conventional social tact.
* ConspiracyTheorist: She believes pretty much everything in her home setting is the work of a conspiracy or conspiracies. She considers there to be multiple possible candidates for their identities, so she generally refers non-specifically to 'Them'.
* EmbarrassingFirstName: In-universe, Havanar is also the name of a female gluvpaki character on a full-immersion show called Braintrust who is known for having a rabid fanbase prone to PerverseSexualLust. This has resulted in a lot of teasing for actual gluvpaki named Havanar. Due to Sesk-Ry's eccentricities and the fact that she's fairly unattractive for a gluvpaki, the jokes tend to have a nastier edge when directed at her.
* FriendlessBackground: She has virtually no friends at all in her home reality, with even fellow conspiracy theorists tending to not get along with her because of her preference to believe in a vague 'They' rather than subscribe to any particular theory. She's apparently not bothered by it, but does tend to react excitedly to even basic politeness as a result.
* GenkiGirl: She is extremely excitable and prone to rapidly shift topics, and when particularly excited, she speaks very rapidly.
* Hammerspace: She is apparently capable of storing a lot of strange, random things in her clothing. Partially justified by future technology, partially just RuleOfFunny.
* LonelyTogether: She and the equally (though for different reasons) socially-inept Akiel develop a relationship in Inn along these lines.
* MundaneObjectAmazement: In Inn, she's strongly fascinated by the color green, which is uncommon on her homeworld.
* NameOrderConfusion: Sesk-Ry is her surname. She generally introduces herself simply as Havanar to avert the trope, only having given her full name to fellow reptilian Akiel in Inn so far.
* NoSocialSkills: Downplayed. She is in different cases ignorant about and uninterested in bothering with many rules of normal social behavior, but she's by no means entirely oblivious to it.
* PardonMyKlingon: She has used a number of gluvpaki obscenities so far in Inn, only some of which are translated.
* SssssnakeTalk: Played with. Although this isn't one of her normal verbal tics, she does have a tendency to slightly stretch her S's when excited, and she occasionally stammers over words that begin with S when nervous; both of these traits are meant to be evocative of this trope.
* TeleportationSickness: She suffers a brief bout of this in Inn, due to being sent there by a misused Gatebuilder artifact. It's not serious and she eventually gets over it.
* VerbalTic: Several, most of which reflect her eccentricity. She has a tendency to repeat and draw out words she finds interesting, is prone to random bouts of humming, and for some reason has an excessive fondness for the word "rather".

!!!Threads: University, City, Archipelago, World's Fair, Frontier

A young man in his mid-late teens, living in a nice suburban community in Washington state, who was one night turned into a lizard-man under mysteriously average circumstances.
--> Additional Images: 1

* invoked AngstWhatAngst: Joseph is more often bothered by the things surrounding his being turned into a giant talking lizard than the change itself.
* BodyHorror: His change from human to lizard-man took about a half an hour to happen completely (which is still a very impressive, all things considered).
* FreakinessShame: Joseph is surprised at how welcoming the people at the University are, despite his appearance. He still tends to avoid strangers when alone.

!! Oswald (Ozzy) Prosper Léonard Orozco
!!!Works: Untitled Novel (1)
!!!Threads: University, Mansion, Inn, Halloween, Frontier

A man born with the appearance of a beast-like demon. He was raised in seclusion; well out of the public eye. Most of his childhood entertainment and knowledge of the world came from the large collection of movies and books that he would watch and read constantly. At age 19, his mother passed away. As time went on, he was seen as more-or-less a burden of limited practical use. Another mouth, feeding on his father's waning fortune. Finally, he was made to leave home; his only stomping ground of 20 years.

He was left to wander a strange and often desolate world, shrouded in heavy robes, traveling from place to place, working wherever he could get it for whatever he could earn. Sometimes asking questions, trying to find answers about himself or the world, and where the two fit together. Though physically fit and well built, Oswald is weighed down by a big heart and a head clouded by much more naivety and idealism than he would ever like to admit.

Oswald, though still very young and lacking in practical experience with most things, does his best to mask his shortcomings with lofty language, general courtesy, and, when it seems called for, bravado.

--> Additional Images: 1guest drawn 2 3 original more ragged robe design

* BigRedDevil: Underneath his extensive amounts of clothing, Ozzy has a reasonably large set of horns, a beast-like muzzle, light gray-blue skin (his arms and legs covered in Marks of the Beast), and a lengthy pointed tail. Some have likened him to a Minotaur, though he lacks fur or hoofed feet, and is only a little over 6 feet tall.
* HornedHumanoid: Far from the only difference Oswald bears from his fellow man, but the one trait he has difficulty covering up.
* Seekers
* WigDressAccent: Ozzy commonly wears a large amount of clothing to conceal his less human physical traits. Mostly so that he can establish himself with his voice and person before anything is assumed from his appearance.

His funding and private sponsorship come from Tucker Weller, in lieu of his late father.

Only tropes that are exhibited in the thread are listed. You're free to add any. Because I've been in the threads for a few years and my work evolves rather quickly, refer to this folder for up-to-date information on my worldbuilding and characters, not what I've written in the threads.

Common Manifestations (a now defunct concept) are born when a mage kills something (usually an animal) over a rune circle. Most of the Manifestations that show up in the threads are Elder Manifestations, which are tasked with maintaining the universe's supply of usable energy. They are forced to periodically make contracts with fleshlings to regenerate their unstable forms. In exchange, the fleshling becomes an extremely powerful mage and is alowed access to this power for as long as their soul can remain stable. Elders' personalities are primarily composites of traits shared by former Witches, but two exceptions, the "gods" Ren Yangchao and Mikio, still have the personalities of the Witches whose souls fused with the Elder long ago and refused to be integrated.

* BlueAndOrangeMorality

* VoluntaryShapeshifting: They can appear as ghostly images of whatever they want.

!!Agnesi/ Ren Yangchao (previously Marianne/ Fiona)

Ren Yangchao was an ancestor of Ren Island's noble family whose soul is still distinct within Agnesi despite being absorbed upon their death hundreds of years ago. They will occasionally make temporary contracts with Ren family members in order to regenerate, as well as dispense advice when asked nicely. They are known, however, to be a bit more bloodthirsty than is usually practical, and sometimes dismisses questions that they feel are too boring. Their Dream II appearance is the first to feature Ren Yangchao and not just the Elder.

* BloodKnight

!!!Threads: Dream, City

Lebhaft made a contract with Friedrich Ritter many years ago, but has stayed with him because his infrequent use of the Elder's full power has kept his soul extremely stable--ideal for Elder regeneration. Its previous iteration was bound to Wilhelm Ritter.

!!!Threads: Dinner Party

Lord Matthias Ren's companion. His Manifestation form is now defunct.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He is nothing like what he was in Dinner Party. For one thing, he now has a physical body.

A half derogatory, half affectionate term that Manifestations use for Vespers and humans. They can be referred to collectively this way because they are biologically identical. "Humans" was used in the past to refer to the people now known as Vespers, but after Geier fell, Vespers decided that "humans" should be used to refer to the fallen ones and "Vespers" for the humans that are still endowed with magic. This is why many Vespers still use the terms "mankind" and "human nature" and mean either Vespers or humans depending on the context. The Shijounese believe that these distinctions are pretentious and refer to everyone, mages and non-mages, as human.

!!Wilhelm Ritter
!!!Works: Entropy
!!!Threads: Titanic, Cantina (II), Heist, Chatroom (II), Memorial, Dream, City, Archipelago

An autistic piano player who is currently attending a conservatory on a scholarship. People and their emotions tend to amuse and/ or confuddle him, and his unintentional rudeness doesn't help, but he tries his best to show his true colors in socially acceptable ways.

* TheAlcoholic: Fond of whiskey.
* CharacterTics: Cleans his glasses when nervous, hums when he's deep in thought, there's usually some music playing inside his head, fiddles with the various trinkets stuffed inside his coat while talking to people, and uses his scarf to hide his mouth when embarrassed.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: He's become a little more bubbly and a little more of a Jerkass, but is also a lot more timid, feels worse about his jerkassery, and is more aware of it when it happens.
* CloudCuckooLander: His rants can get a little bizarre, especially to a non-musician.
* Determinator
* FaceOfAThug: He looks fine when he smiles, but his neutral expression is rather off-putting.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* KnightInSourArmor
* MadArtist
* MagicMusic
* NoSocialSkills: He can put on a pretty good act if he's lucky, but he isn't always sure why he has to do what he's doing.
* SirSwearsALot
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: He can be technically perfect when he wants to be, but he believes that a true artist "rewrites" what they perform, giving it new life and individual flair. This arose from a frustration with cookie-cutter compositions in his home country, which he discussed with Iris in Archipelago. The conformity-valuing institutions he's surrounded by are not happy.

!! Cyrus Fenrir/ Kito the Wolfram
!!! Works: Entropy
!!! Threads: Cantina II, University, Dinner Party, City, Frontier

The youngest member of the Fenrir family, and Seilaan's uncle on her father's side. He's timid and naive, but very optimistic and strongly believes in second chances. For reasons he is extremely reluctant to discuss, his lungs and ribcage are seriously damaged and he displays symptoms akin to severe asthma. He is considered a genius mage, runeologist, and engineer, but he grew up very sheltered and has only just begun learning how to navigate the "real" world. Currently lives on Ren Island and carries out research alongside Renesians in the Society of Magic and Natural Science. His soul-bonded Wolfram, Kito, usually accompanies him and they can switch bodies. Kito is a little more sardonic and pragmatic, but they consider themselves one person because of their souls' fusion. Kito is Cyrus's "true" name in the Fenrir language, as their culture makes very little distinction between human and Wolfram, despite their sometimes clashing personalities.

!!Rachel Pahlke
!!!Works: The Infection
!!!Threads: University, City, Archipelago

A teenage girl infected with a zombie virus that affected her body but left her mind intact. While not fond of her infection, she deals with it rather admirably.

* ActualPacifist: She detests violence, partly because she finds it repulsive and partly because, as an Infected, she believes that violence is a gateway to completely losing one's mind to the P-virus. It's sort of ironic, since the virus gave her a rather impressive set of claws that are just begging to be used for that purpose.
* CreepyLongFingers: While her fingers are actually the same length as an uninfected human's, the fact that they're all tipped with 1 1/2 inch claws (besides her thumbs, which are vestigial stubs) definitely invokes the effect.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Yet another physical oddity resulting from her infection.
* Cute Zombie Girl
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Her black hair is a result of her Japanese ancestry; her pale skin is a result of the P-virus.
* FantasticSlur: "Zombie," besides referring to the infected who actually behave in that manner, is used as an insult to P-virus infectees who weren't mentally affected. Rachel isn't quite as insulted by the term as others of her kind are; actually, she isn't above using the term to refer to herself when speaking with people unfamiliar with the P-virus.
* FreakinessShame: She isn't fond of her infection, but has gotten reactions contrary to her opinion about it various times.
* GreenEyes: A very pale, sickly-looking shade of green - yet another oddity resulting from the P-virus.
* MoralityPet: To Selena. Downplayed as Selena isn't actually a villain or even an anti-hero, though she is considerably less jerkish when Rachel's around.
* NaturalWeapon: Her claws, not that she would actually use them as a weapon.
* Nice Girl: If a little strange.
* NightmareFetishist: Despite openly disliking her own condition, she actually isn't bothered by people or creatures that other people would find terrifying unless said people or creatures are openly hostile.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: She's a 28 Days Later-style viral infected who, besides the obnoxiously large claws on her fingers and smaller claws on her toes, as well as the lack of thumbs, otherwise looks like a normal teenager who's rather sickly. She refers to herself and other zombies like her as "Infected," although she's not above calling the usual variety (or herself, for that matter) "zombies."
* ReluctantPsycho: As far as she knows, the P-virus didn't do anything obvious to Rachel's mind. Nevertheless, she's convinced that the virus is playing around with her and tempting her to give in to its suggestions of violence (though how much of this is due to the virus and how much of it is due to her own psyche isn't quite clear). Not quite the same thing as struggling with insanity, but it's close enough.
* TaintedVeins: Not a straight example; Rachel's veins are still naturally colored. However, her skin is pale enough for the veins closest to the surface of her skin to be extremely visible, especially around her wrists and ankles, which gives off this effect.
* ViralTransformation: What the P-virus did to her.
* WolverineClaws: Her claws - each of them are an inch and a half in length and resemble a straightened version of an eagle's talons. She has a claw on each of her fingers apart from her (vestigial) thumbs. They aren't made of metal - rather, they're keratin based since they used to be her fingernails before Rachel was infected.
* ZombieInfectee: Exaggerated; while she's obviously an Infected, she usually keeps her most disfigured parts (namely her hands) hidden from the eyes of other people out of a desire to not freak them out and possibly endanger them (or herself, for that matter).

* FullyEmbracedFiend: Of a non-malevolent sort.

* Lady Swears-a-Lot: Compared to Rachel, at any rate.
* MoralityPet: Has one in Rachel. Downplayed as Selena isn't a villain or even an anti-hero, but she is considerably less jerkish when Rachel's around.
* NaturalWeapon: Her claws, while smaller than Rachel's, are still capable of acting this way. Unlike Rachel, Selena will use them that way if she needs to.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: Like Rachel, Selena is a Film/TwentyEightDaysLater-style viral infected. She's more pallid than a normal human, she has half-inch claws instead of fingernails and toenails, and her eyes are an odd amber color, but she otherwise looks normal.

* OneWingedAngel: Yet another mirror-granted ability. She turns into a dragon when she personally is required to participate in combat.
* Pride: About her looks and status, and has plenty of it to spare.

* TheUnfettered: To her, the end justifies the means. What those means are is irrelevant.
* TheUsurper: Stole her position from Anne by murdering her husband (Anne's father) and cursing Anne.
* VainSorceress: Comes with the territory. Katharine actually is not a bona fide mage - she gets most of her abilities from her mirror.

Katharine's closest advisor and Court Mage of Theoland. Given his age and profession, he is very wise and not easily phased, but at the same time he seems to be rather weary of his Queen's ambitions and of life in general.

* CourtMage: Not that he gets the chance to use magic as part of his job very often - more often than not, he's acting as a normal advisor. When he is using his magic, it's to curse somebody on Katharine's orders.
* TheDragon: To Katharine.
* TheGoodChancellor: In stark contrast to Katharine.
* MagicStaff: Used to channel his magic. However, its secondary purpose is as a walking stick; Ulrich almost never participates in combat.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Unlike Katharine, he has a conscience and doesn't take too kindly to her orders, but as he's been working with the woman for years he feels obligated to follow them regardless.
* PunchClockVillain: He does a lot of questionable acts, but unlike Katharine he has a conscience and is only doing what he's told.

!!Kaguya Koizumi
!!!Works: The Odd Tale of Kaguya
!!!Threads: Archipelago, Halloween

The princess of Youkai who was raised by humans for most of her life. Is very quiet and reclusive; she strongly prefers reading the minds of others as opposed to actually trying to talk to them.

* AlliterativeName
* Don't Call Me Princess: She finds being referred to by her proper title of "Princess" to be a little embarrassing, mostly because she just isn't used to being referred to so formally.
* EmotionlessGirl: Of the "emotionally repressed" sort. While she feels the normal range of emotions for a teenage girl, she tends not to show them around strangers. She's more expressive around people she's closer to (or when she's alone).
* HappilyAdopted: Her adoptive family was a very close knit one and is the one thing she really misses from her human life.
* UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics: Her preferred honorific is "chan," at least when she's with people she feels comfortable around.
* MeaningfulName: She was named after the Kaguya in the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter both in-universe and out.
* MindOverManners: Something she hasn't quite grasped yet, and something Hayate is desperately trying to teach her.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent
* PokeInTheThirdEye: Between her mind-reading habit and her inexperience compared to other satori, she tends to be on the receiving end of these quite a lot. That being said, she's yet to get one that actually has long-lasting effects.
* TheQuietOne: A result of her preference for mind-reading and general shyness.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her eyes are blood red in color, but all they signify is that she's a youkai.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: Her usual outfit. Technically speaking, it's not actually a school uniform; it's actually a fashion style known as Kogal. However, it is based off a school uniform and looks similar enough to count.
* ShrinkingViolet: Most of it is likely due to the constant teasing she got while living among humans coupled with her telepathy. While seemingly not willing to talk to most people at first, she can open up surprisingly quickly assuming she's with someone she's interested in.
* Telepathy: She possesses the ability to read minds with her third eye, like all satori. Unlike most satori, however, she doesn't have much restraint in using it; in fact it's her primary method of learning about others. Unfortunately for her, she also isn't very experienced and anyone who's even slightly supernaturally attuned can likely tell when she's trying and respond appropriately.
* ThirdEye: Like all satori, she has one on her chest, right above her heart, that lets her read minds whenever it's open.
* You Gotta Have Gold Hair[=/=]ImplausibleHairColor: Her golden hair, while normal for a satori, is very unusual for a Japanese person (or a human in general, for that matter, as it's actually golden and not just a shade of blonde). It was probably the biggest reason why she got teased so much, though later on she tried to pass it as dyed to various degrees of success.

* ItAmusedMe: Some of his more...questionable actions, when they aren't geared towards teaching Kaguya something or otherwise helping the royal family, tend to have this line of reasoning behind them.
* UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics: Youkai culture has a slightly different view on honorifics than human Japanese culture does; they're notably much less common. That being said, Hayate is informal even by their standards and simply never bothers with honorifics unless he's speaking to the King and/or Queen.
* PsychicBlockDefense: One that isn't up all the time, but he is well aware of attempts to read his mind and raising it takes no effort on his part, with painful repercussions for the mind reader in question. One doesn't serve a family of satori without developing such a defense.
* TalkingAnimal: Considering he's usually in the form of an ordinary red fox....
* TricksterMentor: A mild one to Kaguya. He's never outright hostile to her, but he's not above messing with her if he thinks it'll help teach her a lesson.
* TheXenophile: Has a profound interest in learning about other races, whether they're human, youkai, or something else entirely.

She can interact with the physical world just fine for the most part and most are able to see her normally, at least if they're youkai, otherwise supernaturally attuned, or just in a place that's suitable.
* ShipperOnDeck: She fancies herself a "love expert," and upon making someone else's acquaintance she usually won't waste time in seeing if there's someone she can hook them up with.

!!Uffern, the Living Hell
!!!Works: Untitled
!!!Threads: City (Mentioned in Dinner Party)

A sentient otherworld that seeks to consume Briton, and quite possibly other worlds. Its main manifestation is an armored knight-like being called the Hellking.

* AchillesHeel: For all of its power, Uffern is incredibly weak to opposing AntiMagic. While stronger vessels can usually shrug it off, weaker vessels or mere extremities just get sacked or severed to prevent the anti-magic from spreading to the rest of Uffern.
* AndIMustScream: The poor souls that become Uffern batteries are forced into this until Uffern consumes their world, unable to do much of anything except maybe have a metaphysical conversation with Uffern. Fortunately for them, it's not for eternity - once Uffern has completely consumed their worlds, it grants them the peace of death.
* AntiMagic: Uffern possesses an immune response that is functionally this. Depending on the strength of the vessel/extremity, it could be anywhere from weak, but effective, to making magic essentially useless against it.
* BlackKnight: The Hellking, Uffern's Avatar in Briton and by far its most notable one, manifests as this. It's just in appearance, however; it definitely doesn't act like a knight.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Uffern is a world-devouring abomination and makes no pretenses of being otherwise. However, it considers its actions to be more in line with a predator-prey relationship than anything actively malevolent (everyone's got to eat, right?). Furthermore, it might even show something resembling compassion towards clients that have served it well.
* DarkIsEvil: When Uffern manifests in another world, its raw essence manifests as black shadows that cover possessed entities and taint whatever abilities it might use.
** DarkIsNotEvil: How it presents itself to potential clients, as the aforementioned reaction is involuntary (and Uffern doesn't see itself as "evil" anyway).
* DealWithTheDevil: Uffern's modus operandi; it seeks those who desire power, or otherwise in great need, and offers to give them its assistance. It's diligent about holding up its end of the bargain and is often honest about a particular requirement (to assist them, the client does need to give up their soul to Uffern given how it works), but that doesn't mean it (usually) ends well for the client.
* DemonicPossession: Uffern will eventually do this to anyone who it plans on making into a battery (that is, almost everyone who accepts a deal with it) or if the chosen client possesses the right qualities to become an Avatar.
* DraggedOffToHell: The fate of any world that Uffern manages to plant enough batteries in. It can also do this to individuals who wander too close to a battery, although it usually won't do so unless it sees that individual as a massive threat that not even an Avatar can deal with.
* EldritchAbomination / EldritchLocation: As a sentient Hell, Uffern qualifies for both of these.
* GeniusLoci: Exaggerated. Uffern is a sentient dimension.
* AGodIAmNot: In an odd sort of way. Uffern is insulted if it's called a god, but not because it's trying to humble itself. It's because it thinks itself as much more powerful than any god, and being lowered to a god's level is insulting.
* Hellgate: Uffern batteries are a mobile, one-way version of this. Based around the body of a possessed client, they are spots where Uffern eats away at the surrounding world and where Uffern-spawn can enter it from the main realm. The more powerful the possessed being, the greater the area a battery covers. Enough batteries let Uffern fully consume a world.
* ItIsDehumanizing: Inverted; Uffern actually prefers being called "it." In fact it gets insulted if referred to by a gendered pronoun; it considers itself far above such a mortal way of distinguishing things.
* LegionsOfHell: The Uffern-spawn, who are formed from the essence that composes Uffern molded around a soul.
* LovecraftLite: Uffern is incredibly powerful, being essentially a MedievalEuropeanFantasy version of Yog-Sothoth, but that doesn't make it unstoppable. Its vessels and batteries can be rooted out and destroyed if caught in time, and Uffern itself can be punched out if one knows where to strike.
* MagicIsEvil: The nature of magic drawn from Uffern, due to how it's usually acquired and what eventually happens to those who use it. Uffern would say otherwise about the "evil" part, however.
* MissionControl: To vessels it hasn't possessed yet.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Uffern is a Celtic otherworld whose name is often translated as "Hell." The Hellking as well, for reasons that are rather obvious.
* PlanetEater / SpacetimeEater: Uffern is somewhere in-between these two extremes. It eats other worlds. "World," in this case, can be anything from a country on a planet to an entire dimension.
* PowerParasite: Uffern's way of increasing its strength. Once it has claimed the soul of a vessel with desirable abilities, it will graft the soul onto itself to gain control of the vessel's powers permanently.
* RealityWarper: As an otherworld in its own right, Uffern has complete control of anything that goes on within itself.
* SoulPower: As a Hell, Uffern naturally has quite a bit of control over souls. It can form them into Uffern-spawn, it can graft souls onto itself to steal the powers of their original owners, and it grafts itself onto the souls of vessels to augment their powers.
* TheVoiceless: Uffern is capable of communicating, but it cannot speak on its own. It needs a speech-capable vessel for such a purpose. Even so, it tends to be quiet as the Hellking or other completely possessed vessels, only speaking when it's attempting a deal. However, it is very chatty with vessels it hasn't possessed yet.
* SuperWeight: Is quite variable. The usual, otherwise powerless mortal who gained the ability to use its power is usually a 3, though this can go up to a 4 should Uffern pull a VillainOverride. Avatars (particularly powerful vessels used for the purposes of leading the Uffern-spawn and eliminating particularly threatening targets) range from 5 to 6 depending on how many batteries Uffern has planted in that particular world, while it's is a full 7 when doing anything within itself as an otherworld.
* TinTyrant: The Hellking, again.
