Boyd "Bo" Pritchett

The show's main character, Boyd decided to stay in Boston upon getting a job as a maintenance worker at the university. Oh, yeah, and he met the woman whom he couldn't live without (Joy). Played by stand-up comedian Anthony Clark, whom, like his character, was born in Virginia, and spent some time living in Boston.

Tropes associated with Boyd:

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Bo" (only Wyleen called him this). Tasha contributed her own nicknames, like "Forrest Gump", "Mr. Happy Pants", etc.
  • Character Development: The early stages of Season 2 saw Boyd attempt to move past his feelings for Joy. He even attempted to date another woman named Lisa. He even called Joy, the woman he loved, the reason he stayed in Boston in the first place, a snob because she wouldn't get Wyleen into an exclusive women's-only group called the Sub-Rosas.
  • Chick Magnet: Boyd may have wanted Joy, but he could've had his pick of any woman at the university, thanks to his charm. Even a childhood friend of Wyleen's who came to Boston for a visit wasn't over her teenage crush on him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Boyd had two notable examples of this in the series:
    • In "Virginia Reeling" (Season 1, Episode 6), Boyd was so distraught over Joy's rejection of him, he seriously considered moving back to Virginia. Tasha talked him out of it, noting he had made a life for himself in Boston, and was very popular at the university. Of course, he and Joy finally sharing their First Kiss during a Convenient Slow Dance also helped.
    • In Roger Rees's debut episode as President Harrison Cross, "Commander-in-Grief" (Season 2, Episode 14), Cross fires Boyd after Boyd refuses to fall in line with some of Cross's ideas for the university. Left without a job, Boyd again faces the prospect of having to go back to Virginia, only to be elected the Student Liaison.
  • Large Ham: Boyd never minded yelling just about anything while making some wild gesture with his hands.
  • Love at First Sight: Once he saw Joy in the student union for the first time, nothing else mattered.
  • Love Hurts: Tried as he might, he just couldn't get Joy away from Jack. Check out "Mercury Retrograde" (Season 2, Episode 4). He gets pretty damn close.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Boyd was indirectly the reason Joy decided to break off her engagement with Jack. Helping out at the Student Crisis Center in his early days as Student Liaison, Boyd received a call from Joy, asking what she should do about her relationship. Boyd simply told her to "follow [her] heart". Joy didn't know it was Boyd she was talking to, though, as Boyd had a teeth whitening plate stuck to the roof of his mouth. This caused him to inadvertently offend a previous caller with a lisp.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Boyd may have been a country boy to the core, but he was no dummy. The number of times he made President Cross back off a certain position showed this.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Yeah, Boyd did some odd, and sometimes, downright creepy things just to talk to Joy, or see what was going on inside her head, even retrieve her mail. He showed some traits of this in Season 2, even when he was attempting to move past his feelings for Joy.
  • The Storyteller: Had many, many stories about his and Wyleen's strange backwoods relatives and friends back in Virginia.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Once rummaged through Joy's trash to find a note she'd written him, and then opted to throw away. He sat at the dining table in his and Wyleen's apartment, attempting to piece it back together. He told Wyleen what he was doing, and she was understandably creeped out.
