The Bat-Family

    Terry McGinnis (Batman)

The Dark Knight of Tomorrow

A former teen delinquent, Terry's life changed when he stumbled upon an elderly Bruce Wayne... and the Batcave. With Neo Gotham plagued with crime and no vigilante to stop it, and to avenge the death of his father, Terry took up the cowl of Batman.

  • Age Lift: Terry is usually depicted as a teenager, maybe college-aged at best. Here, he's decently into adulthood.
  • Legacy Character: As opposed to being the second Batman as per the DCAU, at the time of the Rebirth continuity, he's the fifth official Batman after Bruce Wayne, Jean-Paul Valley, Dick Grayson and Jim Gordon.

    Matt McGinnis (Robin)

The Boy Wonder of Tomorrow

Terry's younger brother who is a big fan of Batman. He assists his brother's Batman duties, eventually becoming Robin himself.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: DCAU Matt was bratty, whereas Matt here is a lot more mature and understanding, probably helped by him being in on Terry's secret.
  • Legacy Character: Becomes Robin after Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Damian Wayne (Stephanie Brown's time as the fourth Robin was retconned away).

    Elainna Grayson (Batwoman)

The daughter of Dick Grayson, formerly known as Robin, Nightwing and Batman. She dons the cowl of Batwoman.

  • Canon Foreigner: Unlike the other characters, who are all versions of DCAU or main DCU characters, Elainna has no counterpart.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Once she begins working with Terry, the red in her costume changes to blue. This has the benefit of making it easier to distinguish them while also being a Call-Back to her father's Nightwing colours.
  • Distaff Counterpart: To Terry, with promotions even dubbing her "Batwoman Beyond" to make it clear.
  • In the Blood: Takes after her father, who was a well-regarded superhero as Robin, Nightwing and Batman.
  • Legacy Character: Becomes Batwoman after Luka Netz and Kate Kane.

Supporting characters

    Bruce Wayne

The Dark Knight of Yesterday

The former caped crusader, now retired. Bruce was presumed dead after Brother EYE's attack, but resurfaces, ready to aid Terry once more.

  • The Bus Came Back: After he was killed off in Futures End, Bruce returns in the first arc of the Rebirth series.
  • Dented Iron: As usual for Batman Beyond, Bruce retired once his age and injuries caught up with him.
  • Not Quite Dead: Originally believed to have been killed by Brother-Eye, he was actually left in a coma and captured by Terminal.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bruce's reaction when he realizes the janitor working for Terminal is the Joker.
  • Old Superhero: Naturally. He can still kick the asses of untrained people, but otherwise he'll need some mechanical suit to back him up due to his age.
  • Retired Badass: Per the norm of Batman Beyond, Bruce has not acted as Batman for decades by the time Terry begins to.
  • Vague Age: It's unknown how old Bruce is actually meant to be. Beyond the typical superhero comic rule, the comic takes place "decades in the future", and Bruce during Rebirth is about 40 in the main DCU.

    Commissioner Barbara Gordon

The former Batgirl and Oracle, now the commissioner of Gotham's police like her father before her.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: DCAU Commissioner Babs had grey hair, whereas she's still a redhead here.
  • Happily Married: She ends up marrying Luke Fox, the former second Batwing.
  • Older Than She Looks: She somehow looks Terry's age and doesn't even have greying hair, when she must be at least 40.

    Dick Grayson

The former Robin and Nightwing, and the father of Elainna Grayson, the new Batwoman.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Matt from being killed by Heart of the Jokerz.
  • Papa Wolf: Don’t you dare think about harming his daughter.

    Dana Tan

Terry's ex-girlfriend from high school, now a reporter.

  • Age Lift: Like Terry, Dana is now well into adulthood in contrast to the teenager we usually see in the DCAU.
  • Secret-Keeper: She keeps Terry's secret, though she's none too pleased when she finds out he'd been lying to her for most of their relationship.

    Max Gibson

Terry's old friend from high school, who has only recently found out about his life as Batman.

  • Age Lift: Just like her former classmates.
  • Mission Control: Essentially fills Alfred's role.
  • Secret-Keeper: Keeps Terry's secret, except this time she learns it much later than she usually does (when they're classmates).

Villains

    Damian Wayne (Ra's al Ghul)

The new Ra's al Ghul, who has taken control of the League of Assassins... who also happens to be the son of Bruce Wayne himself, Damian Wayne.

After having stopped being Robin, Damian eventually suited up as Batman himself. However, his brief tenure ended in a bloodbath, accentuated by the lethality of the AI in his Batman suit, which pushed him over the edge. Being disowned by his father pushed him into fully embracing his al Ghul heritage.

  • Face–Heel Turn: Damian has completely assumed the role his mother's side always wanted for him.
  • Legacy Character: In addition to having been the fourth Robin, Damian was also briefly Batman and is currently Ra's al Ghul.

    Joker

The Clown Prince of Crime himself.

Batman's archenemy.

    Ra’s al Ghul

The former leader of the League of Assassins.

  • Killed Off for Real: Ra’s very, very old age finally caught with him before the events of the series, and not even the Lazarus Pits could save him this time.
  • Posthumous Character: He’s dead for good by this point, but before he died, he trained Damian to be his successor.
