Nerv Children

     Rei Ayanami

"Okay. Let me make it clear. The only way I would wear this god forsaken school uniform all the time would be if I was some quiet, emotionless, lifeless doll who was the sex slave of an old man who I would follow around all the time, only because I bore a passing resemblance to his deceased wife. If I was a freak like that, okay. Maybe I would wear this school uniform all the time, but that's not what I am and I don't want to be like that. Okay?"

The daughter of Satoshi and Kameko Ayanami, Rei was born on March 31st, 2001 and is the lead protagonist of the story.

After surviving a near fatal encounter with Naoko Akagi at the tender age of nine in the year 2010, Rei became very cynical as she entered her early teens, growing a strong interest in heavy metal and cult movies right to her joining Nerv to protect humanity.

While Rei is, for the most part level-headed, she can sometimes enter bouts of frustration deadpan sarcasm and sometimes even stark bitterness regarding the situation but all in all deeply cares for her friends and peers.

     Mari Illustrious Makinami

"Now excuse me, its time for me to bust some angel bollocks."

Rei's British-Japanese best friend, who often plays second banana to her friend's many of their operations and general off-time hijinks.

The daughter of the high ranking British politician and a deceased Japanese woman, Mari often displays a strong wit, a dry, snarky sense of humor, tendencies to pull pranks on her friends and even some traces of slight punkish anarchism, all neatly wrapped in a very British package.

She's the pilot of Evangelion Unit 05 and may or may not be a secret agent working on behalf of MI5

  • Ascended Extra: In Rebuild, she's an Ensemble Dark Horse with mysterious intents and goals. Here, she's a full-time member of Nerv frequently working alongside and conversing with Rei, Shinji and Asuka.
  • I Am Very British: Very notable due to her frequent usage of gratuitous British Slang, often to the bewilderment to others.
  • Little Miss Badass: Although Rei and Asuka have shown their own fair share of combat knowledge and special quirks both inside and outside their Evangelions, Mari greatly exceeds them both in many ways...especially when not piloting.
  • The Prankster: She's had her own fair share of pulling pranks on her fellow Evangelion pilots, especially in Chapter 13 when she deliberately told Shinji to visit Rei...only for him to come in as she took a shower.
