• While sitting at a gathering on Tertius, having been multiply seduced by beautiful men and women, seeing firsthand the effects of marvelous technologies including time travel, and getting a wonderful, magnificent, working, biological, human, feeling, walking, ticklish replacement for his missing foot, and getting pressured to go on a Suicide Mission by Lazarus Long in repayment for that foot (and the medical miracle that saved his life after a nasty attack in Luna), Richard works out that the foot he got came from Lazarus's clone and that the entire set up including marrying Gwen was part of a long con to get him to go on that Suicide Mission. So he stands up, tells everyone to go to hell and demands Lazarus cut the foot off, because he'll be beholden to no one for a favor he never asked for.
