• Chapter 6. Petra mentions that she manage to fight off a bandit attack and take all their supplies, tripling her cache by the time she reached Paris.
• Chapter 7. Ducky has been tortured for weeks, she actually died, but she still manages to threaten Tarvek the only way she can: She is going to make him like her, so that when he kills her (after not getting anything useful out of her) he'll feel absolutely terrible about it. Because she's a minion of the Heterodynes.
  Ducky: You can hook me up to your machines, you can try to divine the truth, you can even sic that marionette you call your sister on me. She seems like someone who knows how to wield a knife like an artist. But there's just some things you can't make a Mechanicsburger do. There's some things you can't make me do. We serve the Heterodynes. The rest of the world can burn.
• Chapter 10: After all that talk about being willing to die for the Heterodynes, Ducky escapes anyway. Or more specifically, she lets Tarvek "help" her escape, knowing full well it's a plot he cooked up with his father. But then she derails it by killing Aaronev, letting Anevka catch them, and forcing Tarvek to help her escape for real—partly by pointing out that even though Tarvek knows literally nothing about Lady Heterodyne, she's still obviously the better choice than Anevka.
  Tarvek: I suppose you guessed it wasn't a real escape. It's why you killed him.
  Ducky: No, that's not why I killed the old man. [suddenly serious] I killed him because he was a threat against the Heterodyne. And the only reason I didn't kill you when I had the chance is because you're not going to be any kind of threat to her.
  Tarvek: I promise I won't.
  Ducky: No. I didn't ask you to promise, I was telling you. You're not going to be a threat. She's not going to be as easy as me.
  Tarvek: Ducky, absolutely no part of dealing with you could be described as easy.
