• Chapter 15: When Sirius reveals his quest for revenge and tries to murder everyone, Maria decides to stop him. Cue boss battle.
  "Die with the nobles, Campbell!" he spat, wreathed in eldritch flame as dark as the abyssal cosmos. "I'll kill you all! I will have my revenge!"
  Maria closed her eyes. "Lady Claes, please stay with Lady Hunt," she said, and stepped forward.

• Chapter 16: As Maria is juggling Sirius around like a ball, he manages to use Dark Magic to start a Battle in the Center of the Mind. Of course, that just leaves a generic evil spirit fighting one of the most infamous bosses from a game full of them, finally able to access her full abilities again.
  Uncrossing her legs, she stood, a long weapon with a blade at either end in her hand. Raising it before her, she wrenched, and one weapon became two.
  "I will liberate him... from your putrid influence!"
  Spreading her arms out to either side, she impaled herself on her own blades, hunching over as their tips and more erupted from her back. As he stared, confused, she wrenched them free. Blood exploded everywhere as fire licked the edges of the swords, which had elongated with blades seemingly made from blood.
  "You are my prey... AND I WILL SLAUGHTER YOU LIKE THE BEAST YOU ARE!"

• The woman who kidnapped Maria's mother gets so angry she transforms into a covetous demon. The fight is both terrible and incredible.
  • First off, Maria has been resisting the urge to murder the woman for hours. She stops resisting immediately.
    Her sword slammed into the beast's back with all the fury of a daughter protecting her mother, the titanite-alloy blade glowing blue let out a roar of her own.
    It was later.
    And now Maria was going to kill her.

  • Once they get outside, the demon starts throwing trees at Maria. Maria, with only one hand free and slipping on the muddy ground, dodges every one and distracts the demon long enough for Rafael and Larna to escape with her mother.
  • The crazy Dark Magic wielder helps the demon, which makes things much more difficult for Maria... until Maria finally manages to conquer the Dark Familiar made from her mother's soul, creating a shadow copy of her beloved Rakuyo twinblade. And then she starts fighting back.
    As it spun to face her Maria joined both blades together and fell into a low stance, blade held level next to her head with both hands, pointed at the beast. As the beast charged she thrust.
    Dark Magic left her in a rush as a beam of darkness streamed from her blade, striking the beast full on.
    As it staggered, Maria quickened forward, twinblade held overhead as she leapt. Both blades slammed into the beast in succession.
    For the first time that night, the darkness and fire were filled with a scream of bestial pain.

  • Maria discovers she can shoot giant beams of Dark magic out of her sword, integrates this into her fighting style, and slaughters the demon.

• Mary, being the greatest social climber of her generation, of course has spies all over the Claes estate. When Katarina gets a week off, Mary immediately runs over, only to realize that the Duchess might be upset at her—after all, Mary appeared out of nowhere without calling ahead, and the Duchess literally wrote the book on etiquette. Instead, the Duchess thanks her for "accepting the invitation," and Mary finally realizes that she's not actually the best politician she knows.
  And then Mary understood.
  Her spies... were not really her spies.
  The Duchess' gaze sharpened ever so slightly as she saw the realization in Mary's eyes. Yes, she seemed to say. This is my house, and I tolerate your childishness.
  Mary considered how many souls she'd paid her 'spies' over the years to keep her appraised of her dear Katarina's activities and visitors...
• Following the above, it's mentioned that all of the Third Prince's spies in the Claes estate immediately went silent after the Duchess denounced him.
• Throughout the series, Katarina's friends and family (except for Maria and Matthew) have largely treated her squiring under Maria as a quirk she'll get over. But when the assembly is attacked, Katarina only has a brief moment of confusion and panic before she picks up her sword and protects the innocent bystanders.
  Katarina closed her eyes. She took a deep breath. Then she opened them again as Nicol turned towards the two of them, as her friends rushed towards her now that there was no more danger in their paths.
  "Everything's going to be all right. Because I'm here."
  I want to be a knight.
• Once the La Sablicans have been mostly routed, the heroes encounter a problem that there's no one left to interrogate. No one, that is, except for the people who Katarina fought. She left behind a pile of unconscious bodies, all men who were trying their hardest to murder her, without suffering so much as a scratch herself.
  "Katarina subdued all these men?" the Third Prince said as more and more unconscious men were retrieved from various piles, with the watching knights looking impressed. A few had additional injuries from being trampled.
  "Yes," Maria confirmed.
  "Katarina Claes?" Prince Alan said. "About this tall, eats like a hole in the ground, is friendly with everyone she meets, literally doesn't realize when people are being mean to her?"
  "If you know of someone else of that description, Duchess Claes would like to know, as she has been looking for a fake Katarina."
  "...How?" Lord Nicol said.
  "Lord Ascart, are you doubting my ability to teach my squire?"
  "We're not doubting your ability, I'm trying to reconcile history with what you just told me!" Prince Alan exclaimed.
  "That seems like a problem of comprehension," Maria said.
