Awesome / Ghostbusters: Afterlife

As an Awesome subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.

  • The teaser trailer: It opens on a lone barn on a stormy night. Electical zaps and flickering lights can be seen and heard through the open door. As the "spooky" Ghostbusters music starts up, the shot switches to a closer view of the barn, and starts moving closer still. Something can be seen covered by a cloth inside the barn. As the storm gets worse, the cloth cover billows. More electricity flickers as the camera gets closer, then mechanical ticking like something is being adjusted with tools. The light flickers again as the camera reaches the barn door, but this time it's a proton stream, accompanied by the iconic whine of a proton pack powering up and cycling down. The person working on the pack still cannot be seen, as the camera, now inside the barn, focuses on the shapeless lump covered in the billowing cloth. As the music builds and the camera gets close, a strong gust of wind lifts the cloth to reveal, lit by the proton pack's electricity, the rear bumper and hatch of Ecto-1, with the Ghostbusters' logo in full view before the cut to black screen with the sound of the proton pack powering up again.
  • Egon Spengler's Dying Moment of Awesome in the Action Prologue. He's got an invisible foe hot on his heels while he's carrying a loaded trap, and he races through the farm, burning through all the traps he can to slow the thing down. He succeeds in weakening it and almost was able to take it out solo... except the power grid on his farm was too weak to power the mass trap field. He then shows he has the Heroic Willpower to do what needs to be done to prevent his ghostly foe from possessing him and undoing the other ghost's capture, forcing the enemy (implied to be Zuul) to retreat.
  • Ecto-1 is practically a rolling moment of awesome all by herself, as she not only held together after decades of disuse, but helps the next generation capture ghosts and evade and defeat a pursuing terror dog. Imagine what she'll be like when Winston and his team restore her.
  • When Egon's ghost is guiding Phoebe to fix the proton pack, not only does she take his assistance in stride, but she also figures out exactly what she needs for work, including proper tools - Egon's brilliance is truly hereditary.
  • Phoebe, with Podcast assisting her, testing out the repaired proton pack, from the buildup of the reactor humming to life to the beam exploding from the rod for the first time in years to the junk she's gathered as targets being blasted into fiery oblivion. Podcast's sheer awe says it all.
  • Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast chasing Muncher down Main Street. They show epic displays of teamwork as they all have to learn on the fly their necessary roles in this kind of capture: Trevor Drives Like Crazy to keep the ghost in sight and give the other two their openings, Phoebe in the newly-discovered gunner chair wrangles Muncher, and Podcast operates the RC trap bot to finally trap it. It doesn't go smoothly, but considering the OG Ghostbusters themselves had a somewhat rocky start in the Sedgewick; and we've never seen this kind of ghost chase in live-action before and that the kids are, well, kids, these three handled themselves remarkably well.
  • Phoebe becomes enraged after the town Sheriff insults Egon, pointing a Neutrona Wand at him in anger.
  • The climax kicking off with Vinz Clortho/Grooberson destroying the stream-crossing rig meant to keep the 2021 apocalypse at bay. For someone who previously possessed someone like Tully (and is implied to be just as goofy as him), this is meant to establish that Vinz Clortho can be dangerous when he wants to be.
  • Following this, the ghosts being unleashed from the mineshaft! All to the ominous first few notes of the Ghostbuster theme song's scary riff!
  • Podcast getting back the trap and proton pack from jail by unleashing the Muncher to eat the cage from the inside out. That's some clever thinking on his part.
  • Phoebe stares down Gozer, the entity that scared her grandpa beyond the capacity for rational thought, the entity that's responsible for his death...and distracts said abomination by telling it silly little kid jokes while Podcast steers the trap. Stone. Cold. Bad. Ass.
    • Phoebe also manages some epic sass when Gozer tries to threaten her.
Gozer: "Are you prepared to die?"
Phoebe: "No! I'm 12. (Beat) Are you?"
  • The race from the temple to the farm, though has its funny moments, does have quite a few awesome moments in working as a team. Podcast doing a great job at keeping Vinz Clortho from getting to the RC trap that has Zuul in it, Phoebe taking a brief moment to use the gunner seat to deliver a brief blast against Vinz to keep him back from the trap and Ecto-1, all the while Trevor is doing pretty well at driving fast and getting them safely to the farm.
  • The Final Battle against Gozer, especially when the original Ghostbusters, including the spirit of Egon show up to save the day!
    • Most notable moments for certain characters:
      • Lucky busting out the front door of the house in a surprise attack when Phoebe has drawn Gozer close enough to try to initiate the trap. She's picked up the knack for ghost wrangling with a proton pack quite quickly, and manages to hold Gozer down all by her lonesome... except that the trap field's transformers still aren't able to muster. Lucky is then caught in the open against the even more wrathful Gozer and eventually goes down for the count, but that's certainly not on her head.
      • Now at full strength, Gozer makes her moves to kill Phoebe and Callie. Moments before she can land a blow, a familiar voice calls out the Destroyer. Right behind her, the OG Ghostbusters are back!
Peter: Hey, flattop! Have you missed us?
      • Upon seeing her old enemies again, Gozer asks the iconic question; "Are you a god?" While Winston is about to chastise Ray for messing up the answer last time, Ray steps forward and confidently says that yes, they are all gods.
      • After a brief banter, the trio start up their proton packs and fire at Gozer. Not taking any chances, they immediately cross the steams like they did before, which seems to hurt Gozer. Unfortunately for them, the Destroyer has learned from her past mistake and much to everyone's shock, not only can she touch the beams, she can separate them.
      • Peter keeping his cool, mouthing off in his typical fashion to try to lull Gozer into a false sense of security and close enough for Winston to try and get a shot off on her. It fails, but the fact that the original crew know each other so well that they were able to know what they were going to do without saying so, especially after thirty years of being out of practice, is impressive.
      • When it looks like Gozer has the upper hand against the original crew, Phoebe fires a blast at Gozer to catch her attention, then proceeds to hold a Beam-O-War against an ancient Sumerian god, before the spirit of Egon comes in to steady her hand. That's right: a little girl, who would typically be portrayed as The Load in any other horror movie, stands up and holds her best against an evil god to give the original team enough time to get their Heroic Second Wind and turn the tide of the fight.
      • Egon's Big Damn Heroes is one as well. Just as his granddaughter is losing said Beam-O-War against Gozer, Egon manifests as a Class 4 ghost in order to help Phoebe. His presence shocks everyone present, including Gozer. All these years, Egon has been a hindrance to Gozer's plan, and now, even in death, he continues to be a thorn in her side. Hise unexpected return distracts Gozer long enough for the rest of the original team to return to the fight.
      • Podcast, after triggering the taser mode on the PKE Meter, starts taking out the Mini-Pufts after they have sabotaged the plan to capture Gozer, letting him get the Ecto-1's Proton Pack going again.
      • As Egon guides Phoebe to line up her beam with the others, we get to see all four of the original Ghostbusters fighting side-by-side one last time.
      • Trevor gets one for smarts: after Podcast completely takes out the Mini-Puffs and restores the gunner seat's proton pack, he doesn't join in on trying to hold Gozer. Instead, in a cunning move, he targets the silo-capacitors to give them a charge using the proton pack, allowing all the traps to get the power they need to capture Gozer and the other hostile ghosts. Bear in mind, he only knew what a capacitor was because Phoebe gave him a brief explanation of what it does a few hours ago. Trevor, like Phoebe, is clearly Egon's grandkid, and is able to improvise much like Egon did.
      • Once the capacitors are active, Callie knows what she needs to do and races over to push the pedal for the trap field. Beneath Gozer, the hundreds of traps Egon buried over the years activate, splitting Gozer's spirit into smaller pieces and sucking in the vortex that Gozer created over her. With that, Gozer's reign of terror over Earth has finally ended.
      • Up until that moment, the Ghostbusters' biggest successes were thwarting Gozer's plans and destroying the warlock Vigo. But in this one, they successfully CAPTURED A GOD. That is no small feat AT ALL. A destroyer of worlds ends up with its essence dismantled in hundreds of traps and finally captured, thanks to science, guts, and three generations working together.
