* ABoyAndHisX: WesternAnimation/AdventureTime is about twelve-year-old Finn, the last human, adventuring in a , RPG-like world along with Jake, a magically shapeshifting dog. In a rare case of this trope, Jake is not only sentient but is able to talk and perform very human activities such as playing the violin, doing magic when taught, and having a girlfriend. Also, Jake is literally Finn's family -- he is his adopted brother since Jake's biological parents found a baby Finn alone in the woods. If one ignores that Finn is the protagonist, it could be said the show it's about a dog and his boy. In any case, both of them help each other mature and become better versions of themselves. Usually getting through life milestones together (e.g., Finn supports Jake when he meets his girlfriend's parents, Jake gives Finn advice in romantic matters).

** Prismo is a pink LivingShadow with a lisp and an occasional limp wrist who is overjoyed when Jake tells him he loves him. When he and Jake are sitting in the hot tub talking about relationships, he says he doesn't want to be in a relationship because he "Doesn't want to have to talk about everything for hours before doing it", and Jake even remarks that he has a very bleak view on relationships. It helps that his "reasons" show that he's clearly never really dated a woman before. And then there's the "Call me" letter he gives to Jake at the end of the episode.
** Huntress Wizard competed for Princess Bubblegum's kiss as well. She's brought into AmbiguouslyBi, however, as she's Finn's third love interest. They're never shown breaking up and by the end of the show it remains ambiguous whether or not they're still a thing.
** Both of the Lemongrabs. They live together, have no problem with hugging while they're butt naked, have many children, love each other very much, "keep each other company in lemony bliss," and insist that Princess Bubblegum "call first" before visiting. They refer to each other as "brother", which does not necessarily reduce the ambiguity.

** Although the "ambiguous gayness" of Bubblegum and Marceline gets less questionable in later seasons.

* BaffledByOwnBiology: In "Checkmate", Marceline loses her vampire essence, and when she feels hungry for the first time since becoming a vampire, she wonders why she feels this way. She thinks it might be what love feels like. Jake then takes out a picnic, and Marceline eats it quite ravenously. She loves the taste of other foods since she's never been able to consume anything that wasn't red since becoming a vampire.

* AnAesop: Sometimes subverted, e.g. in "Freak City" and "Witch's Garden"", but often played completely straight, albeit in weird ways. For example, Finn is taught not to break promises by being punished by the Gumball Guardians.

* BrokenAesop: Let's just say this show doesn't take the whole AndKnowingIsHalfTheBattle thing too seriously.

* CluelessAesop:
** The moral of "Conquest of Cuteness" is that using your cute looks and charm to manipulate others is better than using violence.
** The moral of "All Your Fault" is that having more children than you can feed will create hardship for your family and community.
** "Tree Trunks" suggests that you shouldn't encourage people to "follow their dream" if they simply don't have the necessary characteristics for it, as it will probably lead to disappointment or something even worse.
* Cluster-F Bomb: Obviously we can't have literal F-Bombs in a kids show but Simon repeatedly shouting "MOTHER!" while angrily kicking at a car has all the hallmarks of this trope. He even asks Marceline to cover her ears before he starts cursing.

* ArtifactTitle: Trope. Around Season 6, the subtitle "with Finn and Jake" slowly became this, as many episodes would focus on other characters instead of the titular duo, to the point they may not even appear at all. They'd still get their own plotlines and episodic adventures, but the series as a whole became more about the "adventures" of everyone in Ooo. The "Stakes" miniseries and "Come Along With Me" in particular demonstrate this, the former being an eight episode long arc focusing on Marceline as the protagonist and Bonnibel as deuteragonist, and the latter serving to resolve the character arcs of everyone but Finn and Jake, the two still appearing in both cases but as supporting roles. Material released post the original series would continue this, with WesternAnimation/AdventureTimeDistantLands dropping the subtitle and only having one of its four episodes focus on the duo, and WesternAnimation/AdventureTimeFionnaAndCake focusing on the titular duo and Simon while Finn is largely DemotedToExtra and Jake doesn't even appear.
