BWTW Chapter 4: Pranks, Terrorism And Blasphemy

Written By: Noah
POV: Michael

Noah begins the chapter with an author's note that is more acidic than usual for him, telling the reviewers not to review if they don't like it, that the fic is to warn them about sinning and that they will go to Hell if they don't become Christians. He insists that Ebony is not the My Immotal Ebony, but is named after a friend of his (technically she's his cousin, but I have to wonder whether cousins would also be considered friends), meaning she is a Christian rather than a Satanist, and neither he nor his brother are trolls.

Michael wakes up with an electric shock, which is a prank that Hogwarts students apparently do to get their classmates to make them angry enough to turn evil. Michael hopes that God will punish them for this at the last judgment, but keeps his anger to himself so that he can learn more about the threat to Christians.

Potions class is held by an unnamed teacher who receives no characterization. Granted, Snape is quite difficult for most fanfic writers to characterize well, but it might have been interesting to see how spectacularly Noah fails, since Prayer Warriors!Snape teaches his students how to make bombs instead of potions. Michael doesn't know to what end the class is creating their bombs, but for now, bides his time, looks for more information, and intentionally flubs the process. One would think the latter would be dangerous even if he didn't get detected, but he isn't noticed and no one suspects he's a Christian.

At "spell class," Michael learns spells that can cause people to faint (thereby falling off high places to their death), as well as ones that induce heart attacks. He refuses to say "Hail Satan", and mumbles his words so that his spells won't work; the fact that he's a muggle is a more relevant barrier to him doing magic.

During a break, Michael searches for information on attacks in the library, and is apparently surprised that it has nothing. Those infiltrating an organization usually have to work harder than that to find out something of importance, since the rank-and-file are typically not privy to such matters. If one could find information on Hogwarts by looking in the library, which presumably loans books to all students and faculty, the secret would have leaked by now.

Michael then goes to Ebony for help, greeting her with "secret follower of the son," an entirely unnecessary code name for a Christian. That night, she arranges a meeting with Hagrid, who is supposedly a Hogwarts teacher in spite of the fact that he never graduated from the school. Hagrid recently has had a change of heart and wants to see the school torn down and replaced with a cathedral.

Michael eagerly looks forward to that prospect, and asks what he can do to help deal with Dumbledore. He learns that he must get closer to one of the witches and, apparently realizing that he has an obvious match in Ginny, knows what he must do, even if he doesn't like it. But he believes God will forgive him, and agrees to do it, with Hagrid and Ebony approving.

Noah ends the chapter by promoting one of his stories.

Next Installment: Michael finds out that his secret is less safe than he thinks, but gains an unlikely ally in the process.
