Manga Chapter 13: Retracing Old Ground

Instead of a flashback at the start of the chapter, Anzu briefly summarizes why MEXT wants to close Oarai and how winning the tournament can prevent that. I suppose it's a measure to save panels, and avoid introducing the MEXT official, although the info boxes can be used to reveal his name.

Yukari ponders the implications of the school closing down, and notes that MEXT is not just closing down a school, but an entire community (which makes me wonder whether, from a practical standpoint, the number of people deprived of their homes, schools and jobs outweighs any benefit from "consolidation). Since her parents live and work on the ship, the Akiyama family will be affected as well. Of course, Yukari also ponders the idea of being separated from her friends, whom she's wanted for so long, but then Miho revitalizes everyone's morale by saying that she wants to do tankery with all of them. Yukari promises to do her best.

Yukari and Erwn's recon from OVA 5, as well as Mako and Sodoko's recon from the actual episode, take place off-screen. This is another case in which the manga passes up an opportunity for a Yukari-centric scene, one that wasn't in the anime, at that. The scenes involving Pravda are also removed; it seems unfortunate that most of the rival schools end up gettng Demoted to Extra.

Miho, seeing everyone's morale sag again, does the Anglerfish Dance to restore it in time for Pravda's emissary to hear them refuse to surrender. Musical numbers definitely work better in an anime than a manga.

The team advances out of the church, but the scene in which Turtle Team faces off against four Pravda tanks and defeats two of them is removed, which is quite unfortunate.

Yukari infers that Pravda's flag tank hasn't left the village. Eventually, Yukari is sent out on recon again, and Nonna returns with the IS-2.

All in all, this chapter was highly similar to the anime, to the point at which the scanlators refused to do it at first, because it had nothing new, and lost some of the better parts. I can certainly sympathize with this, and see this as one of the weaker parts of the manga.

Next Installment: Oarai finishes off Pravda, and Yukari struggles with the question of what she can do for Miho.
