Manga Chapter 5: So Close And Yet So Far

The chapter begins where it left off, with Miho deciding to withdraw for the moment and engage St. Gloriana in Urban Warfare.

The middle portion of the battle largely goes as it did in the anime, save for Duck Team succeeding in defeating its enemy, only to be taken out by one behind that enemy. I do have to wonder whether defeating a Matilda is possible for a Type 89.

The end of the match goes similarly, save for Saori commenting on how they won't waste the Student Council's "deaths" and Momo insisting that they're not dead yet. Since three tanks have been taken down thus far (the one Hippo Team defeated, the one Duck Team defeated, and the one Anglerfish Team defeated while escaping being cornered, Anglerfish Team only takes out one more Matilda before the Churchill defeats them. Yukari, after being defeated, mentally notes that St. Gloriana was strong, but Oarai was quite close.

Darjeeling, meeting with Miho after the match with the Noble Sisters while still in their tankery uniforms (in the anime, they changed back into their school uniforms), admits to breaking her teacup during the match, something that the viewer never saw happen in the manga because Yukari did not. Part of the scene in which Miho gets Darjeeling's gift is merged into this one, which is a nice way of smoothing the flow of events. Miho shares her tea with Yukari and the rest of her friends, thanking them for their support, before she has to dance the Anglerfish Dance with Turtle Team (but not on the back of a truck). Anzu then taps Miho for command, and Yukari says that the official matches are starting.

As you may notice, none of the Isuzu family drama is shown, nor is Rabbit Team's apology to Miho. The manga appears to focus more on Miho and Yukari, with the other characters going Out of Focus as a result, which is unfortunate. It also does make the manga seem slightly rushed.

Next Installment: Going back to the anime, in Episode 5, Miho has a run-in with some of her old schoolmates, who doubt her ability to defeat a difficult challenger right off the bat.
