PHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!
That was quite a "recap" there, huh? Never was good at shortening things. Still, I hope you had a fun time reading it. And now, what you've all been waiting for...
Review:
When I first watched this episode on TV, I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't think it was anything special either. It was decent, and somewhat unmemorable. It was just another kid's show among many, and while it wasn't anything too terrible, I didn't think it could hold my interest, so I didn't watch any more episodes.
Now, after rewatching it, I can say that... I think pretty much same thing. It's okay, but it isn't too hot stuff.
Perhaps I'm doing it wrong. Perhaps I have to watch both halfs of the two parter before I can give an opinion. Perhaps it's just a setup episode and the real good stuff comes later, but... I don't know. There was nothing that stood out particularly, there was nothing that grabbed my attention, it was just... Bland, kinda.
One thing in which the show does lives up to it's hype so far is it's animation. I've never really been a fan of Adobe Flash as an animation tool (I much prefer traditional animation), but the flash here looks great. It's fluid and expressive, and most importantly, it looks good, which is something many flash based shows fail to achieve. And I love those bright colors. Congratulations, MLP.
I've also heard many good things about the voice acting. It had it's ups and downs for me. I liked Twilight, Applejack (SOUTHERN), Fluttershy (Cute), and Pinkie (The voice actress' got the character's personality down pat!), but thought Rainbow Dash sounded far too boyish and raspy, and that Rarity's voice actress talks in a way that makes her sometimes difficult to understand (Though keep in mind I'm not a native English speaker). Spike is a different case altogether: I can't decided whether I hate or I love that voice!
The characters have varied and well defined personalities, but most of them seem kind of flat, despite the bronies' claims of great character roundness. Of course, it is the first episode, so it may be a bit too early to judge. At least all of the characters are pleasant and enjoyable enough: I thought Pinkie Pie would be annoying when I started watching, but it turns out she's actually rather tolerable, even somewhat amusing. In contrast, Twilight complains a lot during the entire episode, which comes across as a little whiny, but it's nothing too bad.
But still, if I had to resume this episode in one word, it'd be "MEH". It was a nice little time waster, but nothing else.
However, I'm not losing my faith in this show. After all, it was helmed by Lauren Faust. That chick worked in The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and those shows were awesome. I'm pretty sure it'll get better. Hell, maybe after watching the second part, my perspective on this episode will change! But that'll have to wait until next week...
Until then, byyyyyyyye!
