Chapter 27: You CAN Go Home Again

Aniel: Th-this cannot be! This mere human has destroyed Purgatorium? How powerful is this young man, "Flynn?" I have heard rumors - before my brain was wiped, anyway, of certain people throughout the Multiverse who can sway this cosmic war we are but pawns in to one side or another. "Kingmakers," if you will. I believe I am now in the presence of one. What I do not know is if I should follow him. He killed my masters, thus bucking the natural order of the universe... but on the other hand, having my mind wiped was not a pleasant experience. What to do, what to do...

You can now explore East Mikado again, and there's a couple final things we can do here. Isabeau takes off to spread the word of the evacuation, leaving Flynn without an AI partner for the rest of the game. First of all, talk to everyone you see. It seems the citizens of Mikado were very conflicted about being ruled by Merkabah, and some of the recurring characters like Hope and K are very happy to see Flynn and Isabeau alive. You'll even receive warm greetings from Hugo if you stop by the Monastery!

Flynn: Hugo not being creepy is itself creepy... To think these may be the very last days of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, and what's more, that I will be the engineer of this. Nevertheless, it is the only way to save everyone; I just have a few promises to keep first.

Remember Rodrigo, the Casualry activist in Kiccigiorgi Forest? Well, you can still accept quests from him now. The first one he has prepared is called "Preparing for the Day to Come," and involved Casualries requesting a weapon called a "bazooka" from a military base in Tpkyo.

Oumitsunu: ...OUMITSUNU!

Frost Ace: Gee-ho! You began that sentence three chapters ago-ho!

Oumitsunu: YES...

The base is in the southeast part of the Shibuya District. Predictably, it's a Domain. I found this one by far the most annoying Domain to navigate, but as the Domain layouts are random that may have just been bad luck on my part. At the end there's a Horde of Ictinike.

=MINI-BOSS: WAR HORDE=

Level 47. Drain Fire, Weak Force

Yet another boss that was supposed to be beaten earlier on. Meh. Spam Mazandyne and it won't even get an attack in. It drops the Bazooka, which you can take back to Rodrigo to unlock two new quests.

The first is "Magical Medication." This one comes from two brothers who wish to cure their seriously ill sister's lung disease. They have read in a Tokyo medical book that a cure exists in Tokyo, and the older one wishes for Flynn to fetch the cure for them. Once the older one takes his leave, though, the younger one approaches Flynn saying that his brother is too optimistic: he's read further in the book and learned that the medicine is much less effective at the stage of the disease she is currently at, and instead requests a drug to euthanize her.

Hathor: Oh how terrible! Quickly, we must heal the girl right away!

Attis: Why bother? We're all going to die anyway...

Cerberus: WHY YOU SUCH A MOPE?

Attis: I learned my wife was also my mother, so I chopped my nuts off and bled to death...

Cerberus: WOW, THAT HARDCORE. WAS SHE HOT?

Attis: What?'

Cerberus: YOU MOM-WIFE, WAS SHE HOT?'

Attis: If you like blue electric chicks, I guess...

Anyway, the target is the Hospital in Ginza. Once there, you'll run into yet ANOTHER Domain. This one is only one room, though.

Orthrus: MAN, THIS PLACE ARE STINK. ME NEED CHEW ON BONE NOW.

Gogmagog: Touching be not me!

The pharmacy is, unfortunately, guarded by...

=MINI-BOSS: GHOUL x3=

Level 50. Weak Fire

These Ghouls actually pack a bit of a punch. They're not a Horde, just three individual demons, and they have some pretty damaging Phys moves. If you keep up Maragidyne and Trisagion, they should go down fairly quickly, but they seem to have a ton of HP and memorable managed to down Koga Saburo when I fought them.

Koga Saburo: Heh, don't worry about me; I'm O- (KOGA SABURO falls over)

(FLYNN turns around and notices his GHOUL feeding on the corpses of the other three GHOULS)

Ghoul: What?

Flynn: ...Right. I have decided I will take the medicine. It's my role to bring hope, after all!

Had I gone in here before the Alignment lock, taking the medicine would have added tel Law points, and taking the euthanizing drug, ten Chaos points. You can also grab both and let the brothers decide for themselves, which adds no points of any kind. Honestly, I probably should've done this before going to the alternate Tokyos. Eh. Bring whatever you choose back to the brothers and you can take on the next quest, "Escorting Your Comrade," which is actually plot-relevant! Rodrigo wishes for you to escort a certain someone who is apparently on the angels' hit-list to Fujiwara in Tokyo, who will be able to give him shelter. And who is this someone, you ask?

Flynn: I don't believe it! NAVARRE!

Alraune: Ooh, that wiggly little bottle of blood! Hi~i!

Yes, this quest actually explains what happened to Navarre. He's gone completely insane, and possibly because of this, the angels want to kill him! They've locked down the Mikado terminal, so we must go through Naraku for the last time.

King Frost: 'I thought we kicked out the angels, heeeee-hoooo? Was this also meant to be done earlier-hoooo?

Stop pointing out the plot holes, King Frost! Anyway, head to Naraku and jump down the secret passage to the fourth stratum. You'll see angels indicated by red demon outlines down here, which you can fight or avoid.

Flynn: ''Whew! Hope that drop wasn't too much for you, Navarre!'

Once you get to the Excavation Quarters, though, there's one angel you can't avoid, and he's parked right in front of the Terminal.

=MINI-BOSS: KAZFIEL=

Level 47. Weak Fire, Null Ice, Null Force

Flynn: ANOTHER one of these?

Kazfiel: Gettin' tired of lookin' at me, Sport?

Really, just Kill It with Fire. Do look out, though, because he can target Navarre. Once he's beaten, take the Terminal to Shinjuku. There's no further opposition here, so just head to Club Florida.

Alraune: Come on, Flynn, can I just come out and scare him a bit?

Flynn: No way, he's fragile right now!

Alraune: Still protecting him after all he did to you? That's silly!~ You really do live to create hope...

Stop by Florida to drop Navarre off with Fujiwara. Fujiwara initially wants to set him up as a Hunter, but after he sees the full extent of Navarres' breakdown, offers to take care of him in the Cafe himself. Quest complete. The only other quest that you can get in Mikado at this point is a quest to retrieve Mechanical Hearts from Fafnirs, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Oumitsunu: I...

Nata Taishi: Woo hoo, 'scuse me, pardon me, telegram here, for, umm... Maestro David.

David: Well, let us see here. Oh... hehhehheh... HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

Flynn: What's with you?

David: Ah, my pupil. If you recall, your battle with me was arduous, so it may surprise you to learn that I am, in fact, the juniormost member of the Clan of Death!

Flynn: That is hard to believe. You were quite a fight, after all. What does this have to do with anything?

David: I've received a communique from my seniors. They've heard of your victory over Merkabah. They want to meet you. They think you may actually be able to challenge them in battle. Rendezvous with them at pre-determined spots throughout the city; if you can defeat them, they'll join you, no questions asked. If you lose, though... well, no opponent they've ever faced so far has ever been seen again...

Flynn: Umm, wow. They must be pretty tough.'

David: You could say that... Oh, you could DEFINITELY say that. HeheheheHAAAAAAAHAHAHAAAA!

To be continued...

...Question: Are we at or past the corresponding point in a law or chaos playthrough where K mentions that the Samurai code has a bit that says "If you commit to a thing, see it through to the end"? (And yes, I copied everything in that sentence after "that" from the SMT wiki.)

Hmm... Now that I think about it, that sounds like a less formal combination of "I chooseth this fate of mine own free will" and "Accept responsibility for the consequences of your actions". Heh, wonder if any of the Persona staff worked on this game...?

That's at the first split, where you go with Jonathan or Walter to confront Lilith or Tayama.

Looking forward to Flynn's meeting with David's seniors. Those Clan of Death members often leave a trail of broken bodies, all made of the poor suckers who went in without preparation.

Don't worry, it's coming; I've just been a bit distracted.

I kinda wish Navarre was less of a jerk like he is in the manga's. There he's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
