The Best and Worst of Home

ACDC Town is the fourth destination that we can reach by the LevBus, though presumably there's a bit of a commute involved since the narration says that the trip takes a few hours and when Lan finally arrives it's at the old, familiar Metroline station. Lan's old gang of friends, Dex, Mayl, and Yai are there waiting for him. Everyone welcomes him back, and the screen fades to black as Lan narrates that they then spent time catching up on everything that happened since Lan moved, both at ACDC Elementary, the town, and Lan's new friends and life at Cyber City.

After that Lan's friends leave him alone so that he can take a look around town and speak with everyone in town. ACDC hasn't really changed any. Everyone's homes are still there (we can't enter any of them, though examining the front door of Dex's house yields an HP Memory), the park's the same as ever, and Higsby's is naturally closed, the owner apparently on yet another trip abroad. At least Higsby was nice enough to leave another Chip Trader Special set up in front of the store. We can jack in to the doghouse in front of Lan's old house for old times' sake, and inside's an HP + 300 and a Going Road *. The Program inside bursts into tears that Megaman remembers it. Aww.

As usual there's a Sub Chip merchant lurking around. I've always wondered why so many of them had this vaguely-suspicious air about them. The way half of them mutter about their products you'd think they were drug pushers or something.

  • Full Energy – 1000z
  • Locate Enemy – 7000z
  • Untrap – 800z

Once Lan talks to all of the NPCs and comments that it's like he never moved at all Yai suggests that everyones' Navis should meet up on the Net again like old times. Since obviously we can't jack in from Lan's old bedroom, the access point to ACDC Area, or rather its homepage, strictly speaking, is the squirrel statue that's sat in the park. Before Megaman can leave the homepage he has to speak with Roll who has, for old times' sake I'm sure, a problem that Megaman agrees to help out with. Basically she sent a Program to retrieve something for her, but since it hasn't come back yet...

ACDC Area only has a single area in this game, but it's fairly spacious, all things considered. Can't really say the same about Lan's friends' homepages though. They're less “webpages” and more “webspaces”, consisting of a color-coded platform marked with an object associated with the owner (teddy bear for Mayl, rubber duck for Yai, and a shogi chess piece for Dex). The viruses are much tougher than they usually are for gameplay purposes, though the BBS here handwaves that by claiming that they've gotten more powerful now that Megaman isn't here to delete them. The BBS also seems to indicate that Lan hasn't even once tried to get in touch with his old friends during the, I don't know, few months now I guess, time since he moved. We can also find a skull door behind which is another HP + 300. Meanwhile, there's a merchant to look up:

  • HP Memory – 4000z
  • HP Memory – 7500z
  • HP Memory – 10000z
  • HP Memory – 13000z
  • Hi-Boomerang B – 5000z
  • Wind Racket F – 7200z
  • Magnum F – 8800z
  • Fast Gauge M – 12000z

The missing Program is by the area's exit, locked out thanks to a security door that someone has stolen the key to. Lan's mind quickly leaps to Dex, again comparing him with Mick (though personally I don't see them being as alike as Lan claims), so finding the key is just a matter of examining the chess piece on Dex's webspace. After opening the door Megaman decides to take what the Program had, an Area Pass, back to Roll himself, but as it turns out she intended it as a gift for him. This'll allow him to visit ACDC Area from Cyber City's Net.

After that we have to go back to Yai's webspace, unsurprisingly the largest of them all, to meet up with Gutsman and Glyde. Like always Dex challenges Lan to a Net Battle, and they oblige. The routine is finally broken up by a flash of light, and upon fading Blastman and Diveman show up to kidnap Megaman's three friends. Geez, we've only been here for like an hour and already Lan and Megaman have to pull their hides out of the fire. Just like old times...ugh. Blastman tells us to come to Undernet 2 if we want them back.

It's obviously a trap, especially in light of that cutscene a few updates ago of Baryl planning the next WWW operation, but we gotta go and do this. ACDC Area connects with Central Area 3, via the exit that has the guy at the desk. The Area Pass lets us get by him, but if you try talking to the Navi afterward we learn that it's just a dummy, meaning anyone could've just waltzed on through. I bet that's how Blastman and Diveman got through.

Despite the fact that Central Area 3 connects to Sky Area it's still a haul to get to the Undernet. The two WWW Navis and their hostages are all the way at the very back of Undernet 2 like Blastman said, on the platform where the BBS and the entrance to the postgame area are. Predictably we're going to have to fight both Navis, and Blastman tells Megaman not to cry about things being unfair since he's lucky it's not ten-on-one. Who said anything about crying?!

Blastman EX

HP: 800

Element: Fire

Attacks:

  • Air Bomber – Blastman throws an explosion down one row for 50 Fire damage.
  • Blast Hurricane – Blastman bursts into flames and shoots a tornado of fire down one row for 50 Fire damage.
  • Blast Fire – Embers drift across the field either horizontally or vertically before a wave of fire sweeps it for 80 Fire damage.

Somehow, I doubt that even ten Blastmen would be a challenge.

Diveman EX

HP: 1000

Element: Aqua

Attacks:

  • Smart Missile – Two missiles pop up and shoot down their rows for 20 damage.
  • Dive Bomb – Diveman fires two bombs onto two random panels on Megaman's side of the field for 40 damage.
  • Giga Wave – Diveman throws up a giant tidal wave that hits the front two columns of Megaman's area for 60 Aqua damage.

Diveman, meet Elec Cross.

Blastman and Diveman exit the story in a set of double explosions. Megaman goes to check on his friends, but apparently he's beaten up despite the fact that I barely broke a sweat. As soon as he goes down on one knee a voice says that he should listen to Roll's words to mind himself, and Circusman jacks in to cause us more grief. With Megaman weakened, Circusman has no problems sucking him up just like he did Falzar earlier. Dammit, why does Megaman have to be so helpless in this game when not under player control? Circusman cheerfully tells Roll, Gutsman, and Glyde that he doesn't need them anymore and Yuika jacks him out.

Hm, I wonder where Judgeman and Elementman were during this, even though they weren't needed in the end.

I would question why Mega Man's disappearance would propagate stronger viruses appearing, since there are still other Navis in ACDC, but I get the impression most of them would be too weak or lazy to handle them...

MFM: I think it's likely that, with Megaman and Lan around, everyone else in ACDC only ever dealt with the weaker viruses seen in earlier games. With Lan moving, the stronger viruses pushed out the weaker ones, and everyone was too weak to deal with them.

Think of it in Pokemon terms: Lan and Megaman are your starter, and you never use anyone else. For whatever reason, once you hit the later gyms, you can't use your starter anymore, and all you have left is your single-digit level early catches to deal with enemies that are around level 40 or 50.

(I'm pretty sure we have a trope for this, actually. Assuming I'm remembering correctly, it's Complacent Gaming Syndrome. I know it's not a perfect match for what happened in game, but you get the general drift of the matter.)
