Odds and Ends: The Return

As usual booting the game back up reveals that a gold star has been placed on the title screen now that Alpha’s been beaten. So, time to work on the postgame. Lan starts back right outside of the door leading to the Pulse Transmission room, but we can return to Beach Street via the boat. Whenever Lan goes to take it from there the game will give the option of traveling to either Hades Isle or the WWW base.

My first order of business will be completing the rest of the jobs available at SciLab, as a fair few have been added to the board now that the game’s been beaten. Plus there will be a little something extra to get in the postgame area for completing all of them.

Job #20: Legendary Tomes

The client is a Ghost Navi found in Hades Isle’s network. He’s had three special tomes of his stolen by a guy in the Undernet and he wants us to get them back. The tomes can be used to find a hidden treasure, but he’s not interested in it – he just wants the tomes themselves. So off to the Undernet we go, and as an aside, if you jack in to the general Net at any time during the last day you’ll see that the whole place has been drained of color, and the few Navis and Programs that are still about are malfunctioning thanks to Alpha’s influence.

The new owner of the first tome, the Sky Tome, is found in Undernet 3. He’ll only give it to us if we trade a Magnum 1 A for it. The next tome, Land Tome, can be bought from a Heel Navi in the Under Square for 7000z. He’ll also provide us with a riddle: “Sky is above Land, and Sea is the lowest”. The Heel Navi with Sea Tome is in Undernet 6, and all we have to do to get this one is to prove our mettle via a virus battle. While we’re in this area, Drillman Alpha can be found right behind the program merchant at the bottom of the area. His chip has him execute Drill Drive and Panel Crusher in a row, so under ideal conditions he can hit a single enemy three times.

So now that we have all of the tomes we could simply bring them back to the client, but what about that treasure that he was talking about? Well, the way to get it is a bit of a doozy for English-speaking players, since the solution goes a step beyond being lost in translation – it wasn’t even translated at all! See the riddle above? If you examine the tomes via the key item menu Megaman notes that each has a different code with them that looks something like “__x__x__xx__x” etc. If you draw out the three sequences on a separate piece of paper and arrange them as indicated (Sky’s on the top, Land’s in the middle, and Sea’s on the bottom) you’ll see that they form the katakana characters ハニワ, or haniwa. A quick trip to Wikipedia reveals that haniwa are clay statues that were used in burial rites in Ancient Japan.

The only place that we’ve seen a statue like that in the whole game is that odd-looking one in the teacher’s lounge. Examining it with all three tomes obtained reveals that the statue’s hollow, and it contains a data chip with 300000z stored on it. So, yeah, talk about your Guide Dang It!. Returning the tomes to the owner officially completes the request, and we get an additional reward in Fast Gauge *.

Job #21: Hide and seek!

A boy in Yoka and his friends are playing hide and seek with their Navis in the Zoo Computer. Our job is to be “it” and find them all. There are four Navis to find in total, and they’ll each hand over a battle chip upon being discovered. In all, we receive from them a Sword E, Wide Sword E, Guts Punch E, Barrier E, and finally a Guts Impact H from the boy once the game’s over.

Job #22: Finding the blue Navi

Someone who claims he’s a big fan of Megaman’s from the N1 wants to meet him in Undernet 2, however upon meeting him he turns out to be a creep who unleashes viruses on us. After beating them he timidly hands over an HP Memory.

Job #23: Give your support!

A scientist at the eight-man Net Battle machine at Hades Isle wants us to delete a bunch of viruses that are spreading out of control. So one seven-round survival battle later we’re given a mere thirty Bug Frags as a reward.

Job #24: Stamp collecting

A nurse at the hospital wants us to take part in an online stamp-collecting contest since she wants to give the prize to her cousin but is occupied with work. To sign up, we first have to go and talk to a Program in ACDC 1 to get a stamp card, and then we have to visit the other three Internet areas to find other Programs who are giving out the stamps before returning to the initial Program for the prize, a toy train. Returning to the nurse gets us a Step Cross Q.

While we’re at the hospital, the third quiz giver, a little girl calling herself the Quiz Queen, has appeared on the third floor. She has ten questions to be answered.

  • Q1: Small at noon, tall in the evening, and gone at night: it’s… (a shadow)
  • Q2: 3.1415926535… What is this? (Pi)
  • Q3: What do you get when you cross sandals and a banana peel? (slippers)
  • Q4: What’s round on both ends and high in the middle? (Ohio)
  • Q5: What goes up but never comes down? (your age)
  • Q6: Where would you find Mt. Fuji? (Japan)
  • Q7: A pig gives pork, a cow gives beef, and a baby sheep is? (a lamb)
  • Q8: In the fairytale. what is Hansel’s sister called? (Gretel)
  • Q9: What planet is between Mars and Saturn? (Jupiter)
  • Q10: Which one of these animals lays eggs? (a snake)

I wonder what some of those were in the Japanese version? We’re given Barrier 200 E as a prize.

And one last thing to do here. Down in the basement where the Tree of Life is hides a Ghost Navi in the real world. Talking to him will make him silently hand over the Mega chip Poltergeist G.

Job #25: Help with a will

The client for the final job of the game is a little girl at ACDC Elementary who wants help in deciphering her father’s will which will result in a scavenger hunt. The will contains a word puzzle with letters arranged into columns, and by reading them a certain way the clues can be made out. The clues each point to a certain location whereupon examining the indicated object yields the next clue and a set of Omega viruses to fight. The first clue, for example, points towards a holographic squirrel statue that’s in ACDC 3. After examining it, beating the viruses, the next clue points towards the suit of samurai armor in the Ura Inn. Eventually you’ll be led to the top of the pillar in Undernet 4, where Megaman will find a family photograph. The top of the pillar is located on the platform just beyond where Beastman Beta’s security cube was, so beating him is a prerequisite for this job. Taking the photo data back to the girl nets us our prize of a Recovery 300 R.

All righty, now that the jobs are out of the way, our final destination for this update will be Hades Isle, where we have two bits of unfinished business to attend to. Having passed the Quiz Queen’s questions, the old man calling himself the Quiz King appears at the top of the mountain with the final question set:

  • Q1: How much is a ticket from ACDC Town to Yoka for a small child? (it’s free)
  • Q2: What’s the attack force of Cannonball? (160)
  • Q3: Dr. Hikari’s lab is on what floor in SciLab? (the 5th)
  • Q4: A spider has eight, a rhino four, how many have you? (2)
  • Q5: What did Gutsman have to face in the Endurance Contest? (heat)
  • Q6: How many girls are in Class 5-A? (4)
  • Q7: How does Tamako decorate her hair? (a silver gear)
  • Q8: In what field was Wily the master? (robots)
  • Q9: What is this game’s second title? (Battle Network)
  • Q10: What is Bubbleman’s dance called? (Bubbly Dance)
  • Q11: What type of Navi is Beastman? (a beast)
  • Q12: What was Higsby’s job in the past? (teacher)
  • Q13: What name is on the pillars in Metroline Beach Station? (st. BEACH)
  • Q14: In the past, what was Yai crazy about? (folding fans)
  • Q15: What is the title of the DNN TV series? (Love & Loss…)

And we’re given the Navi + 40 * Mega chip for completing those.

Next we have to go to Eternal Hades, the room inside of the cavern where the quarter-finals of the N1 were held. As he promised back at the end of the game, Chaud is there waiting to Net Battle. I guess we’re just going to have to put the events of the postgame in a vacuum and imagine that they take place just after Lan got Megaman back.

Protoman

HP: 1000

Element: Normal

Attack:

  • Sonic Boom – Protoman unleashes a three-panel-wide air slash that travels down the field for 100 damage.
  • Fighter Sword – Protoman swings a sword with a three-panel-long slash for 100 damage.
  • Step Sword – Protoman appears in front of Megaman and attacks with a Wide Sword for 100 damage.
  • Surprise Sword – Protoman appears behind Megaman and attacks with a Wide Sword for 100 damage.
  • Proto Shield – Protoman erects a shield to block an incoming attack.

Protoman hasn’t changed much since Battle Network 2 except now he has a penchant for attacking from behind. His AI seems to be a bit more contrary and unwilling to let him line up with Megaman to give him a clear shot, which I suppose is a good thing. He uses the Sonic Boom variant where he throws out several in a row a lot more often than he did before.

Winning gives us Protoman B. Like before Protoman will attack every enemy with a Wide Sword-ranged slash.

Now that we have Protoman’s chip we can complete not one, but two new Program Advances. Previously Protoman’s chip was a component of the Double Hero Advance, but here he’s part of two: Deux Hero and Double Hero. Deux Hero has the same combination that Double Hero used to have – Custom Sword, Variable Sword, Protoman, while Double Hero adds Slasher to the beginning of the chain. They have the exact same effect, Megaman and Protoman attack the enemy area together, but Deux Hero is weaker by about two-hundred points of damage.

And speaking of Protoman’s Navi chip, it is now possible, since the game’s been beaten, to get another Giga chip, Delta Ray Edge. The way to get it is through linked play with the opposite version. If both versions have beaten the game, they can randomly get their version-specific Giga chip after a battle. There may be ways to manipulate the system to improve the odds of a drop like with the secret chips in Battle Network 2, though I don’t know the specifics. Delta Ray Edge becomes Protoman’s signature attack starting in this game once he reaches Alpha form, and the way the chip works is, Protoman will attack the enemy once for 220 damage. If the player hits the A button at just the right time a chime will sound and Protoman will attack again from a different angle, and by pressing the button a third time he’ll attack once more, dealing a total of 660 damage to a single enemy and briefly leaving a triangle emblem on the field. There has to be enough room on the field for Protoman to actually land all three hits, so the only way to get the full effect is if the target is either on their area’s center panel or the center panel of their leftmost column. The chip that White gets is Balance, which halves the HP of both Megaman and that of all enemies.

After defeating Protoman we can’t battle his Alpha and Beta forms right away. Chaud won’t let us until we make some progress in the postgame area, so that’ll be our next stop.

Virus Listing
  • Scuttle
    • The Scuttle family of viruses are the spawn of the Life Virus from Battle Network 1. Scuttles come in all five elements, Fire, Aqua, Elec, Wood, and Normal, each with a different attack. All of them, however, possess a Life Aura, which will block all attacks that do less that 100 damage, while the Scuttlest variant will have Life Auras that block attacks that do less that 200.

You know, the one thing I always hated about the Pokemon game was the requirement to either cheat, have a friend with the other version, or have a second system with the other version if you wanted to get everything. GTS made it easier, but some of the annoyance is still there.

Battle Network 3 and later have that same issue. Double Team DS managed to almost totally bypass it, but you needed to play through the game twice and a couple really nice things require either a Boktai game or finished BN games in the GBA slot.

At least in later games it wasn't mandatory to do so to get all of the stars/emblems.
