Chapter 1: Fanning the Sparks

Min, Siuan, and Leane are arrested after Logain attacks a farmer and runs off, also burning his barn down and stealing silver. Leane is now preparing to put her seduction skills to work, as all women in her culture learn. They’re sentenced to work off the debt in the house of their judge, none other than Gareth Bryne, but on the way Logain returns and rescues them. Bryne prepares a team of Retired Badasses to find the women, and has become infatuated with Siuan.

Altiema, one of the Tear nobles who left to escape Rand, arrives in Caemlyn to take advantage of her acquaintance with Morgase to get back on her feet. And it’s working, until Gaebril comes in. He clearly has Morgase under some spell, and does the same thing to Altiema, getting her to tell him her whole story, and everything she knows about Rand.

So, a whole society of The Vamp, huh? Now I can definitely see where those sexism accusations could get started. Though this is definitely a fresh direction for Min’s story to take, and I was very glad that Logain wasn’t just gone between books as that dynamic is too interesting to just discard. I did suspect Gaebril was bad news, but now he actually comes off like he could be one of the three Forsaken we haven’t met yet. So there’s one more prediction for you. Oh, and I very much appreciated the Leaning on the Fourth Wall bit about Min getting tired of Siuan’s fish metaphors.
