The Team had gathered inside the Entrance in the World Inside the TV, as per Yu's request. Rise was the first to speak to Yu after they arrived.

"Did you find out more about Naoto-kun?"

"Yes. According to the police who worked with him, he's obsessed with this case, and as such, they all treat him like a child."

"I see... So he's being stubborn about the case... But it seems like it's rare for Naoto-kun to get so worked up over something. Okay... I've got a good feel for him. I think I can do this. It won't take long for me to find him with my Persona, so be ready to follow me once I do!"

Rise scanned for a short period, then lead the Team off through the fog...

... Curiouser and curiouser.

The Team found themselves standing in front of a heavily armored building in the middle of a sparse forest, several satellite dishes secured on top, along with other bits of hi-tech looking equipment.

"What is this place...?

Yu turned around to talk to Kanji, the others already standing in a rough circle.

"It's all sci-fi... Heyyy, doesn't it remind you of those secret hideouts in live-action shows?"

"Oh yeah.... Heh. I used to watch Featherman all the time when I was a kid."

Rise took a knowing tone-

"I hear that those are really tough shoots. A lot of the actors do their own stunts, like jumping through fire themselves."

Yosuke wore a goofy smile.

"Well, it's every man's dream to do that stuff."

Chie seemed like she could barely contain herself.

"Yeah, I can understand that. They're action-based, like kung-fu movies. And just the phrase 'secret hideout' has this exciting ring to it!"

Well, it's hard to disagree with that.

"Yeah, I think I get where you're coming from."

Chie smiled wider.

"Actually, when I was a kid, I had my own secret place near the mountain by Yukiko's house. I'd pretend that a legendary kung fu master was teaching me special techniques, Hwataaa!"

Yosuke sighed.

"You got it all wrong..."

Hey, let her have her fun, Yosuke.

"But hey, so this secret hideout thingy came from Naoto's mind? I guess our proper boy detective isn't as grown up as he looks."

"Well, we know where he is now. All that's left is saving him."

The Team nodded at their Leader's words, then filed down the stairway to the Secret Lab...

"UNKNOWN INTRUDER DETECTED INSIDE FACILITY. THREAT LEVEL: YELLOW. DEPLOYING GUARDS INSIDE THE FACILITY. WARNING! WARNING! ATTENTION INTRUDERS! LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY! I REPEAT: LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY!"

"Huh? Intruders... That means us, right?"

Yu nodded to Rise-

"It has to. Well, if this is a live-action show, that makes us the heroes, breaking in- Let's make sure we stick to the script!"

"Ah...? It seems you have forged bonds with very many others... How wonderful for you! Well, then... Please take this."

Margret handed Yu a-

A baseball bat...? How... Unexpected.

"Your commitment to your Social Links will be your commitment to your world. I look forward to seeing more of it..."

Margret gave a warm smile for a short moment, before steadying her posture and returning to her usual dour expression.

"I... I must ask... Have there been other people like me?"

"Hmm...? I told you before, did I not? This is a space that only those who have, in one way or another, formed a contract may enter. There have been others, certainly. But I sense you know all you need to already..."

Igor gave one of his signature strange chuckles.

"Now then, is there anything else you need at this time?"

What IS all this stuff? A bunch of random computer terminals showing a world map, random green lights under the floor grating, and little splatters of SOMETHING all over the floor... Maybe I shouldn't worry about t, but I figured something born from Naoto would be more logical arranged.
"WARNING! WARNING! ATTENTION INTRUDERS! LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY! I REPEAT: LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY!"

"Does this mean... Naoto-kun doesn't want our help? I-I don't really get it, but let's go on for now!"

Rise... When you get nervous, we all get a little nervous, too.

"Yeah. We're not letting anything stop us!"

"Yo, mind if I kick a little ass here?"

"Go for it!"

"Heh. Get bent!"

Kanji leaped up and slammed his shield into the ground, a tremendous shockwave issuing forth into the Shadows-

"Atomic Press!"

... Geez, everyone doesn't even try to outshine Yosuke's Strike, huh?

"WARNING! WARNING! ATTENTION INTRUDERS! LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY! I REPEAT: LEAVE THE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY!"

"Hey Senpai, when Naoto-kun appeared on the Midnight Channel... He said he was going to undergo a 'body alteration operation'... Did that mean Naoto-kun's going to be altered here!?... Crap, we need to hurry!"

... Damn, I hadn't considered what that could mean for in here. She's right.

Oh, god. I thought the tanks before were crazy, but this...

Yu stared for a short while at the frantically twitching wheeled turret...

... Yeesh.

Yu called forth his Persona, in the form of a tremendous blue dragon.

"Seiryu!"

Ziodyne

"UNKNOWN INTRUDERS HAVE ARRIVED AT B4. THREAT LEVEL: ORANGE. MAJOR FACILITY AREAS LOCKED. ELIMINATE THE INTRUDERS!"

Great, a locked door. Maybe we should've gone for stealth- Where's a cardboard box when you need one?

The bizarre, hourglass-shaped Shadow flipped itself around and around, and for a split second, Yu thought he could see an

Evil Smile

in the after image it left.

No... Not th-th-

Yu saw nothing.

All gone... Why...

His friends had disappea-

"No! Don't get scared! I'm here with you!"

Rise?

The Lovers' call seemed to be enough to snap Yu back to reality-

"... Thank you."

Yu smiled and nodded to the Team coordinator, who was standing far from the battlefield, protected by Chie and Kanji...

"INTRUDERS WILL BE ELIMINATED! I REPEAT: INTRUDERS WILL BE ELIMINATED!"

Come to think of it, Naoto's inner voice hasn't said a thing since we got here... Maybe he's really that guarded? But what about?

"Hey, Senpai! We gotta keep movin', right? 'Cuz you're kinda spacin' out on us right now."

Let's see... The Healer, Raphael... The Evil Eyed Beast, Girimehkala... And the Solar Avatar-

"Ah... This Yatagarasu possess the

Megido

skill... You have successfully fulfilled my request."

Margret held herself in a way that seemed both very serious and very silly.

"Riddle me this: What kind of Yatagarasu is a crow with three legs?..."

... Well. A Yatagarasu, I suppose.

"... I accidentally spoiled it... I wanted to give you a riddle my master told me. It was difficult, yet entertaining, and somewhat sad... Since we've begun meeting this way, I've gained an interest in words. Anyway... Thank you for showing me this exquisite card."

Margret smiled warmly...

"Now then... For my next request... I'd like to see a Yatsufusa with the skill

Mediarama.

If anyone can do it, I know you can."

When Yu left the Velvet Room, a seventh Empress Card appeared before him...

Whaddaya mean these lion things just shoot back physical attacks? That's ridiculous!

One of the black beasts struck out at Yu, but his Persona, Rangda, summoned a wall of light that directed the force of the blow back to it, causing it to disintegrate into red fog.

... That's ridiculous!

"UNKNOWN INTRUDERS HAVE ARRIVED AT B6F. ELIMINATE THE INTRUDERS!"

Okay, that's just getting repetitive.

Hmm... A researcher's card. For use with the post on Floor B4...

Yu gave the command to return to the fourth basement...

"ENTRY IS FORBIDDEN TO ORDINARY COMBATANTS. PLEASE PRESENT YOUR ID."

Yu slid the pass card through the scanner next to the door and entered, leading the Team through a short hallway that terminated at another door. Yu pressed the button to open it-

"INTRUDER DETECTED WITHIN THE RESEARCH AREA. ELIMINATION PROCEEDING."

Yep, expected as much.

A tremendous Shadow in the form of an anime mecha suddenly struck out at the party...

... Well, for a superweapon, that was sure underwhelming.

The robot sputtered and gave off some tiny sparks before evaporating into the dark red fog...

"Yes! You did it, Senpai!"

"Eh, it wasn't much."

The robot had been posted to guard a chest, inside of which Yu found-

A 'Leader Card'... Only in kids' shows would they call it that. It has 'B6' on it, so there must be a door downstairs that it'll work on...

The Team had cleared out a computer room and decided to take a short break...

"... Dammit, Senpai."

Kanji was visibly tense, nearly crushing the can in his hand...

"I can't just sit here! Naoto could be in real damn big trouble right now! We gotta-"

"Calm down, Kanji. We can't save him if we're exhausted from fitting the flunky Shadows on the way to him."

"... Yeah... You're right. Sorry, Senpai."

Kanji threw himself into on of the control room chairs and took a loud sounding gulp from his soda. The rest of the Investigation Team heard him sigh in resignation...

"BEYOND THIS POINT IS CONFIDENTIAL. ENTRY IS FORBIDDEN FOR ORDINARY COMBATANTS AND RESEARCHERS. PLEASE PRESENT YOUR ID."

Yu swiped the Leader Card and opened the checkpoint, revealing the stairs down...

Hmm?

Yu found and opened a chest nearby...

A hachimaki... With the word 'Child' on it... Geez. I knew coming in here that he had a problem being called that, but this just seems mean on the part of... Who the hell puts these chests here, anyway?

"UNKNOWN INTRUDERS HAVE ENTERED CLASSIFIED SECTOR 2... THREAT LEVEL: RED. DEPLOYING INCREASED GUARDS WITHIN THE FACILITY. THE INTRUDERS MUST BE ELIMINATED!"

"Man... It's seriously rejecting us... We'll just have to get ourselves fired up and burst on through!"

"Yeah. Code Red's always the last one before the big bad guy has to do things himself, so we're nearly there, right guys?"

Let's take a look at some more nightmares from beyond the veil of my conscious self... The Guardian to the Gates of Paradise, Pabilsag... The Apollyon Devourer, Abbadon... The vermillion Bird, Suzaku... Well, that one's not so bad. And neither is-

"Ah, you have fused a Yatsufusa, and it knows

Mediarama...

... I can feel your heart. Words can express nothing. The only way to convey meaning is through the communication between hearts."

... I suppose. But often, words are still the best way to do so.

"... Yu Narukami and Margret... What do these names have in common?..."

Yu puzzled over it for a few seconds, before Margret spoke again.

"... Oh, there's nothing in common... I was testing your generosity. Good job... You passed the test."

... You're fascinatingly strange. But making you happy... Makes me a little happy, too.

"... Now then, for my next request... What I'd like is a Ganesha with the

Tetrakarn

ability... If anyone is up to the task, it's you."

Margret gave a warm smile as Yu left, an eighth Empress card appearing before him on the way out...

"STOP THE INTRUDERS! STOP THE INTRUDERS!"

"Senpai! I can sense Naoto! Just a little more, okay?"

"He's there!"

"Right!"

Yu turned to face the rest of the Team, who all nodded. Yu responded in turn, then pressed the nearby button to open the door...

The whole Team seemed to notice the giant drill and circular saw mounted on robotic arms over a steel operating table upon entering...

"Naoto!"

Kanji had run just slightly ahead of the rest of the Team. Naoto was standing next to his Shadow, peeking over his shoulder when he heard the Team...

"Ah. It's about time you arrived. Dealing with this child has been quite a pain..."

The Shadow barely gurgled a sentence out through its tears...

"No! No, no, don't go!"

"It's useless speaking with you. I need to go back now..."

"Why? Why're you leaving me here!? Why am I always left alone!? It's so lonely... I don't wanna be alone!"

"Naoto-kun..."

Yukiko softly called out the Detective Prince's name...

Naoto shook his head in exasperation...

"You wear the same face as me... It's as if you're implying we're one and the same. But the difference between me and you is..."

The Shadow suddenly swung the tail of its coat back dramatically, returning to the dramatic manner of speaking it used on the Midnight Channel.

"Why delude yourself? I AM you! These childish gestures are no mere affectation... They're the truth! The fools all say it, don't they...? 'You're only a child', 'Keep out of our business, kid', and so forth. No matter how many cases you solve, you're a child in their eyes! It's your brain they're interested in. The grey matter locked up in that skull. As long as they need it, you're an ace detective! Bit once you're done, it's back to the playpen with you. You haven't the means to deal with society's two-faced nature... You're just a lonely child!"

... So, that's what it really comes down to.

"Naoto..."

The Shadow started sobbing again...

"I wanna be a grown-up... I wanna be a big boy right now... Then they'll see who I am... I... I want a reason for me to stay..."

"That's enough. I can find my own reason for living..."

The Shadow scoffed.

"... I'm telling you that's impossible. You are but a child! How can you change that essential truth?"

"S-stop it...!"

"... At your core, you admire the sort of 'strong' and 'cool' men who populate detective fiction. But in trying to emulate them, you must know that in truth, you're nothing of the sort- You're a child. There's no avoiding first principles... Admit that you're a child, and admit that there's nothing you can do about it. Now then! Our analysis is complete! Let us begin the body alteration procedure! You don't have any objections, do you... 'Naoto' Shirogane?"

"Stop it!"

... Come to think of it, what the hell's with the whole 'body alteration' thing?

The Shadow chuckled...

"'Naoto'... Such a cool, manly name! But a name doesn't change the truth. It doesn't let you cross the barrier between the sexes! How could you become an ideal man, when you were never male to begin with...?"

... Oh. Ohhhhhhhh.

Yosuke could barely speaking through his shocked sputtering-

"Wait, what...? Did he... Did I hear that right!?"

Kanji seemed even more stunned.

"H-he's not a guy!?"

"... I won't throw a tantrum... That accomplishes nothing...!"

The Shadow laughed manically-

"How often I've heard those words from the adults! 'Throwing a tantrum won't solve anything, Naoto-kun', and other such bilge! They made you cry, didn't they? Yet here you are, mimicking those same men. What exactly are you trying to justify?"

"What...?"

"It's all right. You needn't suffer anymore. That's why you're undergoing this body alteration procedure to begin with. You throw a tantrum, but it fails to change the situation a single bit... I can quite understand the feeling. After all... I am you."

"That's not true!"

... Yeah, that's about what I expected.

Chie called out-

"Don't say it!"

Kanji rolled his shoulder, preparing for a fight.

"It's okay... Let the kid spill the whole thing. If not, Naoto's just gonna keep hurting... We'll just do our job and kick the Shadow's ass. Yeah?"

... He's got a point. We at least know what happens when we do that.

Yu nodded.

"Yeah..."

The Shadow laughed madly again...

"As if you know anything about me! You'll kick my ass, huh? Fine... Go ahead, you lizard-brained imbeciles!"

Yosuke tightened his fist and raeched for his knives.

"Save the discussion for later!"

Rise started summoning her Persona-

"Here it comes!"

The Shadow drew power from Naoto's unspoken but deep-seated denial, as red fog flooded into its form and it transfigured itself...

"I am a Shadow... The true self... What? Are you sick of yourselves, too? Very well... Then let's begin the special operation!"

Kanji shouted right back-

"Bring it on, man... I'll pull you through this!"

Teddie's eyes had massively dilated...

"O-Operation!? I hate ouchies!"

"Have you made up your mind? Then let us commence!"

A half-robot Naoto... Or half action-figure. Well- He- Well, she- Was torn between her feelings, so I suppose it makes sense.

The Shadow twitched its gun-armed hands and the rudders on the wings of its jetpack...

"C'mon then! Kali!"

Yu summoned a frightening-looking woman with red skin and six arms, a sword in each one. The Persona flailed about wildly, slashing in all directions, mostly towards the Shadow,

Blade of Fury.

"Take-Mikazuchi!"

Kanji's tremendous Persona struck out with its lightning bolt sword,

Mighty Swing.

"... No, no, that will never do. Patients must lie still for me to drill proper holes into them..."

The Shadow glared at Kanji, who suddenly toppled over in pain and weariness,

Galgalim Eyes.

Teddie and Yuiko helped to heal him, via their

Diarahan

and

Energy Shower

skills, before chipping in with their own

Agidyne

and

Bufudyne

spells...

"Why won't you lie down and die!? You children can't do anything at all!"

The fight raged for a long time, until the Shadow fired a strange ripple ray from one of its guns, sealing Yu's Persona and draining his energy,

Mute Ray.

... What the hell...? I feel bizarre...

"Sensei!"

An enraged Teddie suddenly threw himself forward and slashed rapidly with his clawed gauntlet-

"Rawr!"

... Yikes.

"Ugh... Why must you struggle so much?"

The Shadow released a wave of debilitating energy-

Element Zero

and followed up with a tremendous blast of lightning-

Ziodyne-

Nearly knocking out the bear.

"Yu-Senpai!"

Kanji's voice somehow helped Yu recover from the sealing...

... There. I can think with my whole brain again.

"I'll return the favor, Teddie! Come, Abbadon!"

An immense green beast, almost all mouth , appeared behind Yu. The being shook violently, then, suddenly, spewed forth countless arrows,

Arrow Rain.

After the projectiles finally stopped, the Shadow's mechanically components sputtered and gave out, as it feel to the ground and released a huge wave of red fog...

The Team waited for Naoto to wake up after the fight. Chie scratched the side of her head.

"So... Naoto-kun was a girl."

The Detective Prince finally stirred...

Yukiko spoke softly to her.

"Are you awake!?"

"Where... Am I...? I remember you all arriving, and..."

Naoto seemed to remember much more clearly after that...

"That's right... You saw everything..."

Naoto walked over to her Shadow...

"... I lost both my parents in an accident. I was still young, so my grandfather took me in. I was inept at making friends... So I spent my time reading detective novels in my grandfather's study."

"When I grow up... I'm gonna be an awesome, hard-boiled detective...!"

Naoto nodded slightly after the Shadow.

"My parents were proud of their job. I had no qualms about following int heir footsteps... An inherited occupation can feel stifling to many, but I welcomed it. I yearned for the day I could be a detective myself... Perhaps I inherited that desire from them as well. I was always alone... Seeing that, my grandfather must have believed it was his duty to help me realize my dream. I secretly aided my grandfather with his clients... And before I knew it, people started calling me Junior Detective. At first, I was delighted... But not everything went so smoothly."

... I think I can guess where this is going.

Yukiko seemed very concerned...

"What was that you said about 'You're only a child'...?"

"Not everyone welcomes my collaboration when it comes to solving cases... My status as... 'A child', was sufficient to offend many of those whom I worked with. Were that the only issue, then it would have resolved itself with time... But though I will one day change from a child to an adult, I will never change from a woman to a man..."

Yukiko furrowed her brow...

"Do you not like being a girl...? Is that why you always dress like a boy?"

Naoto didn't quite shake her head or nod in agreement...

"... My sex doesn't fit my ideal image of a detective... Besides, the police department is a male-oriented society. If they had the slightest 'concrete' reason to look down on me, no one would need me anymore..."

Kanji shook his head.

"You don't know that."

Yukiko seemed to agree.

"Hey... You must know already that what you yearn for isn't to become an adult, or become a boy..."

Naoto sighed.

"You're absolutely right."

The detective stared into her other self's eyes.

"I'm sorry... I kept ignoring you, pretending yu didn't exist. But you are me... And I am you. You've always been inside me. What I should yearn for- No. What I must strive for, isn't to become a man. It's to accept myself, for who I really am..."

The Shadow nodded.

The strength of heart needed to face oneself has been made manifest... Naoto has faced her other self... She has obtained the facade used to overcome life's hardship's, the Persona Sukuna-Hikona!

After her Shadow transfigured, Naoto's knees gave out, and she fell...

"... In any event, you're a devious bunch. I can't believe you kept something like this hidden for so long... Ha... No wonder the perpetrator has eluded the police... But it's apparent now... This case is far from over."

Yu nodded.

"Yeah... And you're the one who proved it, Naoto. We can talk later- You need to get out of here."

Yu nodded to Kanji, and the two of them carried Naoto back to the Entrance, the rest of the Team following...

"Hey... Hey!"

Kanji crouched down to make sure Naoto was alright. The girl was breathing heavily and could barely hold herself up on her knees...

"... Sheesh. She really put her life on the line for this."

Yukiko nodded to Chie.

"But without her efforts, we'd never have realized... That the culprit is still at large."

... Yeah. I shouldn't have let us all get deluded.

Kanji got to his feet.

"You're too frickin' reckless, dammit..."

"... I never doubted that you'd all come for me... Although the reality turned out to be far beyond what I'd imagined."

Kanji's eyes widened for a split second, but he quickly forced them into a harsh glare.

"Tch... What a dumbass. You're no genius at all. We were tearing our hair out over you..."

Speaking of which- That a bald spot, Kanji?

Rise clasped her hands together.

"So you DID worry about her, Kanji! Awww..."

"Sh-shuddup! Mind your own damn business!"

Yukiko nodded.

"I'll take her home... I don't think she can go back by herself."

"It's... All right... I can..."

"No way, Missy! Don't think that doing everything on your own is the 'adult' thing to do!"

Yu nodded after Rise finished.

"Yeah... I myself only figured that out a little while ago. I'll help you home, too."

Rise smiled a little as she and Yu pulled Naoto to her feet...

Well, that's the end of that adventure. But now we know there's someone still out there...

That night, Yu came home to find...

Oh god no.

Adachi, swaying drunkenly at the table, several beer cans in front of him. Dojima seemed to be nursing one on the couch, as Nanako sat in a chair at the kitchen table...

"Heyyy! Welcome back!"

"Sorry. We got of early today..."

"C'mon, take a seat."

... I may as well.

Yu sat across from Adachi at the table...

"They found Naoto-kun! Oh, uh, do you know who Naoto-kun is? He just up and vanished without a word, but it looks like he's back now. Way ta put a scare in everyone... Yeesh!"

Best to play along.

"I'm relieved."

Dojima stared at Yu for a few seconds...

"... You don't seem surprised. You didn't... Already know he was found, did you?"

Ack!

Adachi lazily batted his wrist at the Hierophant.

"Awww, you really oughtta do somethin' about that habit 'a yours, Dojima-san. They go to the same school. Rumors spread fast out here, y'know."

Dojima fumed for a little, then resumed drinking.

"But man, why'd Naoto-kun disappear? I guess he can be a little difficult... Maybe he got sulky after being given the boot and ran away from home? But I tell ya, I was shocked to hear that he up and vanished like that. If there'd been a fourth kidnapping and murder, we'd be back to square one again..."

Too late.

Dojima sighed.

"Adachi..."

"You know what sucks? We still don't have proof that the Kubo kid murdered anyone besides Mr. Morooka. How're we gonna make a case like this? I wonder if Dojima-san's instinct is right... Maybe there really is another perp out there. The real one..."

"Adachi! How many times I gotta say it!? Quit running your mouth like that!"

Seriously. Just... Shut up, Adachi. At least every once in a while.

Adachi seemed stunned by his superior's orders-

"Whoa! S-sorry!"

Dojima took a deep breath.

"Alright, see here! Don't worry about the case. Just go study like a normal student. If you don't..."

Dojima fell silent, then sighed heavily.

"... I'm going to bed."

The detective marched upstairs...

"Sorry... I killed the mood there. But yeah, I can totally understand why Dojima-san's worried. Just leave the case to us police. You know the problems it could cause if something happened, right? Like, if it happened you were mixed up in it, we'd be real worried..."

Nanako got up and walked closer to the table...

"Are more... Scary things going to happen?"

"N-no way, Nanako-chan! Everything's all right now! We caught the bad man, so no more scary things will happen. Right? Everything's just fine."

"Okay..."

Yu tried to affirm Adachi's words-

"Yeah. No matter what happens, I'll be here to make sure you're safe, Nanako. Nothing bad'll happen to you."

"... Big Bro..."

Adachi kept up...

"A-anyways, your dad's just a worrywart. Leave it to me! You might not know to look at me, but I got the most brains in the whole police department! Oh... Was that too hard to understand...? Did you get it...?"

Nanako nodded. Adachi got up and started pout the door.

"W-well, nw that Dojima-san's gone, I should get going, too... G'nite!"

Don't run over anyone's pets on the way back.

Nanako walked closer to Yu...

"What does 'got brains' mean?"

"It means he's smart."

Or sure as hell thinks he is, anyway.

"Huh... So things'll be alright...?"

"What did I tell you? I'm going to make sure nothing ever hurts you like that, Nanako."

Yu took Nanako up to bed soon after, and read her a story before she fell asleep...

... Yeah. That's what a Big Bro does, right?

-snickers at the cardboard box-

Everyone watches Featherman. EVERYONE. Except Yosuke. He watched the Kamin Rider expy.

Oooh, good catch on Naoto not revealing her inner-thoughts. Didn't think that one through.

...yeah, repelling Physical attacks kinda does hurt your brain when you think about it.

-giggles at the bit of Foreshadowing near the end-

No. What I must strive for, isn't to become a man. It's to accept myself, for who I really am..."

AHA! Just like the "Kanji is gay" thing, people don't seem to notice that what's best for Naoto isn't being a man but rather, accept herself as she is, a woman.

Excellent update! Can't wait for more.
