Since we last saw him, Perrin has become a Memetic Badass in the Two Rivers, building his grassroots army with every stop while word spreads through the whole area and people take up arms on their own. Luc tries a power play to get everyone to go back home, but news of nearby Trollocs sinks it. Unfortunately, those Trollocs are able to sneak around their position, and for the first time Perrin’s group suffers severe losses and his confidence is shattered. They only get away by pretending they can still fight, and finally come across more people.
Well, that’s depressing. Though I guess Perrin does have to suffer some setbacks or he’ll just become a bland Mary Sue. Suddenly he’s a lot more human again, which will make what I assume is his eventual victory all the more impressive. There haven’t been many scenes like this so far, so it’s nice to see Jordan did know when to pull back on how impressive his heroes could be.
