Go To

In which we clip some wings

And we're back. It's been a little bit, so I figured we might as well jump right back in! Really liking the game so far, despite some drawbacks.

Upon entering our room we get a call from Kazushi. Seems he wants to do something with us tomorrow. Hey, we might as well, since our other option is Kenji, and he can go die in a ramen-flavoured fire for all I care. The help screen explains that on nights we don't go to Tartarus, our friends will occasionally call us and ask to hang out over the weekend. Neat. Since we're pretty exhausted from Tartarus, I go with sleeping earlier rather than studying. The next day we pretty much immediately get booted into the event with Kazushi over at the strip mall. Apparently we know how to "dress to impress". My worry-dar is going off again. Before we can explain to Kazushi that we don't swing that way, however, Kazushi launches into a ramble about how he doesn't bother with anything else but his tracksuit, even if it is a little threadbare. He calls it dedication. I call it a hygiene emergency. However, Minato's a nice guy, so he asks if Kazushi feels hot in the suit. Kazushi seems a little disappointed by our answer, but oh w.... Wow, Yukari, that is one heck of an outfit. You on your way to the ball or something? Seriously...

Uh, anyway, we head on back to the dorm and are greeted by the extravagantly dressed Yukari. After a quick save we go ahead and talk to everyone. Mostly they just have useful little titbits about battle tactics and equipment, but it's nice for a first time player such as myself. As everyone seems to be pretty healthy, I figure we might as well try out Tartarus. I also took the opportunity to give Yukari a slightly better bow, since she'll probably need it. According to pdam, level 5 is a good level to be at for the boss, so today we're gonna try and get to him. If we're lucky, we should be able to take him out. If not... Well, we'll see what happens.

One surprise attack by a nasty Shadow later, we welcome Apsaras back into our hearts via Shuffle Time. I've been getting fairly lucky with stair placement so far, since all the stairs up have been rather close to the entrance. Handy. This trend continues for the fourth floor, but I decide to clear it out for some extra training. The fourth floor also features our first enemies to run from a battle. Two of the Merciless Mayas turned tail and fled, leaving only a Tiara to defeat. Thankfully that 1 EXP was enough to push Junpei into the next level. We also gained back Pixie, though there was a skull and crossbones over one of the cards in Shuffle Time. Someone mind explaining what that means to me? In this floor we also see the reappearance of the Magic Hand, those glove-mask things I was saying about a few updates ago.

A few battles later and Yukari also levels up, so I decide that it's about time to finally take on the boss. The next battle we finally see Yukari summon her Persona, destroying all three of the Cowardly Mayas with Garu. About time we finally saw Io in action. A few minutes of wandering around to heal ourselves back up via access point later, we manage to avoid another fight on our way to the boss, even scoring the katana Juzumaru from a rare chest. Finding ourselves on the fifth floor, it's clear to see that this is not like the others. A sickly green filter pulses across portions of the screen, and the layout is much more straight-forward. Mitsuru informs us that there are three Shadows on this floor, but they are stronger than those we've fought before. Meep. We also find a strange looking device in the map, which looks identical to the Tellietubbie thing in the lobby. Odd. Examining it seems to activate it, giving us a portal back to the lobby. How very handy.

After saving quickly in the lobby, we come across three bird-like shadows. Apparently these things are called Venus Eagles, and judging by the music, they are our first boss. Using Agi does only heals it, but other than that they aren't too tough. Alas, being wind element they manage to knock Junpei down, and Yukari keeps missing her attacks. We put Yukari on support and use Cadenza to heal us all up and raise our evasion against these beasties. It's at this point that Yukari finally manages to get a hit in, using her piercing attack to hit the Eagle's weakness and letting us finish off the second of the Shadows. One Persona, Pierce and All-Out later, we defeat the final Shadow boss with little difficulty. Our reward for this victory is the ability to go higher up Tartarus and three Empress Masks, which I presume will be useful for making weapons. Anyway, since I'd like to take a moment to savour that victory, I shall take a break here and get back to you later. Until then!

The skull and crossbones is...

Bad. Very Bad. Avoid it.

Yes, pdam gave me the low-down on what that does. I shall not be listening to a certain cult of blue oysters' advice any time soon.
