Episode 4: Enter ... the Viper

We open with an establishing shot of the Statue of Liberty. Then we got to the exciting action of ... Jackie talking to a museum curator*

, trying to convince him to give him the snake talisman before the Dark Hand steals it. The guy is unconcerned, saying their security was upgraded to protect the Pink Puma diamond, which is in the exhibit right next to the Snake Talisman.

Ratso is there, cleverly disguised with a hat and a flower on his shirt. The flower has a hidden camera inside. Jackie runs into Ratso and breaks the camera. Jackie starts apologizing ... then realizes what he broke and who he's talking to.

Ratso: Chan!
Jackie: You, uh ... Dark Hand guy!

This is much funnier if you realize that the show still hasn't provided Ratso's name. I've spoiled the joke by referring to him by name before this. Oops.

Ratso tosses some pottery at Jackie and bolts. All while a woman in a pink dress takes a picture of the Pink Puma diamond.

Ratso continues running, but gets slowed down by a fence. Jackie jumps the fence and gets ahead of him. Ratso charges him, but Jackie dodges, ripping off most of Ratso's coat in the process. Ratso bolts.

Jackie is startled when Ratso's cell phone rings. Jackie answers it. He tries to disguise his voice, but it sounds really horrible. The connection must be bad, because Valmont buys it.

Valmont': Is reconnaissance complete, Ratso?

Yay! He finally gets a name!

Valmont tells him to hit the museum at midnight.

Cut back to Jackie and Jade at the hotel where they're staying. Thankfully, Jackie brought his all-black burglar suit, which he is in the process of storing. Jade asks if he's going to break into the museum to steal the talisman first.

Jade: That crazy, Jade! You're crazy!

She's also right.

Jade begs him to let her come, saying that it's "Thanksgiving Eve."

Jackie tells Jade that he wished that he could spend more time with her. That hasn't been possible since she came into his life the same day as the Dark Hand and Section 13. He promises to spend more time with her later.

Remember, kids, Jackie Chan says burglary is A-OK ... as long as it's for a good cause.

Jackie agrees not to come with him. The instant he closes the door, she says she said she wouldn't come with him. "Didn't say I wouldn't follow."

Jade Chan: master of Loophole Abuse.

We see Jackie sneaking onto the museum roof at 11pm. At the opposite end of the roof, a female thief arrives. The thief uses a device to disable the security lights on the top. Jackie uses a gum wrapper to bounce the laser back.

The entrance shows the two's parallel actions, just barely missing each other as they sneak around.

And while Jackie is walking around, Jade is suddenly there. How? Well, she was out of the shot for a whole minute.

Jade tells Jackie he's cool for managing to get in. Jackie tells her that he isn't cool because he's breaking the law. Jade just stares at him blankly and says "uh-huh."

Jackie hands Jade a bag and tells her to make herself useful. Theft: it's fun for the whole family!

Cut back to the thief, using the same device from earlier to disable the security around the Pink Puma diamond. Jackie somehow is able to listen to his so he can flick it in just the right place to disable the alarm.

This museum's security is horrible.

Jackie swaps the talisman for a souvenir Statue of Liberty, while the thief uses a device to encase the Pink Puma diamond and then reel it up.

As Jackie and Jade are walking back, they finally notice the thief, who also notices them. The thief jump kicks Jackie and then attacks him. The thief is easily holding her own, which impresses Jade. She catches Jackie an inch before he hits an infrared beam and yanks him back up. Jackie says that "you guys" are early. The thief says she works alone.

Jackie asks if she works for the Dark Hand, and she pulls off her mask and tells him her name is Viper. She then says she doesn't want the talisman, and that she just took the Pink Puma diamond.

Jade: Wow! When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
Jackie: A criminal?
Jade: A female Jackie Chan.

Jackie protests, saying Viper is nothing like him. Jackie then tells Viper that she's under arrest for stealing the Pink Puma diamond. Viper's amusement at this mirrors my own.

Jackie: I’m not a crook, I’m an archaeologist!

It's not an either or thing, Jackie. You can be both. Just ask Lara Croft.

While gesticulating, Jackie accidentally knocks a piece of pottery to the floor, setting off the alarms. All three bolt towards the door, but heavy steel doors start coming down. Which Viper shoots with her pocket rocket launcher.

O_O Those exist? I want one!

Viper runs off in one direction, while Jackie and Jade go the other way. Jackie then realizes that they switches bags during the scuffle. He starts to run after Viper. Just in time for the police to arrive, surround him and tell him to surrender.

The police check his bag, which is empty. Jade had snatched the Pink Puma diamond before Jackie could run back to look for Viper.

Cut to the Dark Hand arriving across the street, geared up to steal the talisman. Wait. How did they know to be there at midnight? Jackie intercepted the call. Or did they call Valmont? And if they did call Valmont, why are they still following a schedule that was intercepted?

They see the police arresting Jackie and stare in confusion. Cut to the Enforcers talking to Valmont.

Valmont: Jackie Chan, a thief? Well, perhaps there's hope for him after all.

Valmont holds up the talisman locator and tells Ratso to use it to find the talisman.

Cut to Uncle chastising Jackie for stealing the Pink Puma because there isn't a puma in the Chinese Zodiac. Then Uncle starts berating Jackie for being a criminal and a bad influence on Jade. Jackie starts to tell Uncle to get a flight to New York when Uncle gets another call. Jackie tells him not to answer since he doesn't know how to do that.

Jackie: I am only allowed one phone call!

Uncle tries to answer the other call, which hangs up on everyone involved. Oops. Then Jade comes to visit Jackie at the jail. Jade tries to use code to tell him she has the Pink Puma. ("The big meow is comfy cozy.") He just stares at her in confusion. She finally comes out and says she has the Pink Puma (although she didn't bring it with her).

She starts excitedly talking about exchanging the Pink Puma for the talisman, saying that she can meet Viper under a "rusty old bridge." I think Jade watches way too much TV. Jackie tells her to wait for Captain Black to come and clear up the confusion and to not contact Viper.

Cut to Viper reading the newspaper, laughing at how stupid Jackie is to return to the scene of the crime ... only to open her bag and realize that she has the talisman. The talisman glows and Viper is suddenly completely invisible. She quickly realizes what's going on and how to work the talisman, obviously impressed.

Back at the prison, Ratso is visiting Jackie. Ratso — like Jade — tries to use code words to ask Jackie questions, but Jackie doesn't understand. Ratso comes out and asks where the talisman is. He tries to use the talisman locator, but it doesn't react.

When Ratso leaves the prison, the locator reacts, pointing at nothing. Jackie is sitting in his cell when a set of floating keys come over and unlock it. Jackie thinks it's a ghost, but then recognizes Viper's voice.

Viper and Jackie argue a bit before Viper grabs Jackie by the front of his shirt and forces him to break out of prison. A police officer tries to stop him, but an invisible Viper knocks him about in about three seconds.

Viper and Jackie head to a bridge. Jade is waiting, dressed up like a film noir character. Where exactly did she get that outfit?

Jackie is annoyed, pointing out that this is a felony.

Jade and Viper exchange the talisman for the diamond.

Viper: You're all right, Jade. You've got a sharp criminal mind.

Jade is obviously thrilled by this. Jackie not so much. Jade tries to invite Viper along to watch the parade, but Jackie tells her not to socialize with criminals.

Jade: Jackie, you should ask Viper out on a date. She would be such a cool aunt.

The talisman that Jackie is holding then crumbles. It's apparently a counterfeit. Jade is crushed by this, and tears up.

Jackie: Old proverb: there is no honor among thieves.

We switch to Viper, who is returning to her room. Valmont is inside and offers her tea. Viper asks how he got past her security system, but he ignores the question and asks for the talisman. Viper tells him it's not for sale. Valmont snaps his fingers and some Shadowkhan appear.

Viper uses the talisman to turn invisible. However, Valmont has the locator and uses it to point to Viper. The Shadowkhan grab her and take the talisman. She breaks free and gets the talisman back. She runs out the balcony and onto a ledge, but Valmont tells the Shadowkhan where to go, asking them to get the diamond while they're at it.

Cut to Jade and Jackie trying to find Viper while the parade goes by. They spot the Shadowkhan attacking thin air. Jackie tells Jade that she gets to watch the parade after all, and to wait there. Jade growls in annoyance.

Jackie grabs a moose balloon from the people carrying it.

Jackie: I'm sorry. I'll bring it back. Thank you!

Jackie uses the balloon to get below the ledge. Viper and the talisman fall onto the float. Jackie is ticked, actually growling at her. She apologizes about double crossing him, saying that the talisman is her sign. Jackie continues to not be amused.

She sighs and hands the talisman over. Jade tells him to make sure it's real, once again using her ability to get to absolutely anywhere if she leaves the frame.

The Shadowkhan arrive on the blimp and we get a very nice fight scene. Viper and Jackie make a pretty good fighting team. Jackie uses the talisman and starts taunting one of the Shadowkhan. Except that since he's on a balloon, it's very easy to spot where he is due to the foot imprints. The Shadowkhan kicks the talisman out of his hand. Jackie is knocked off the float, but grabs a rope on the way down.

Jade helps Viper by knocking one of the Shadowkhan off the float. Viper compliments her, but Jade says "I do not socialize with criminals."

The last remaining Shadowkhan manages to grab the talisman and starts knocking Jackie around. Jade spots someone painting a building nearby and grabs a pain bucket, flinging it at the Shadowkhan. Jackie grabs the talisman back. And the Shadowkhan flings shuriken.

While they're on a balloon.

Idiot.

The Shadowkhan jumps off, gliding to safety. Jackie, Jade and Viper hang on for dear life. The balloon ends up on the Statue of Liberty's torch. Then the talisman falls and activates when it hits the Statue's toe, rendering the entire Statue of Liberty invisible (but not the float).

They get down somehow, while people stare at where the statue used to be.

Viper apologizes to Jade and Jackie. Jackie asks her to return the diamond as she leaves. Jade then apologizes for "pulling a Viper" and hands Jackie the diamond.

The police surround Jackie and Jade. Jackie hands over the diamond and the police officer asks him what he did with the Statue of Liberty.

I really want to know how they explained this to Captain Black (or to the police for that matter). Well, at least rendering a national landmark invisible should be enough to convince Captain Black that magic exists. Right?

Trivia

  • The title of the episode may be a reference to the film Enter The Dragon.
  • Ratso finally is given a name in this episode, making him the third member of the Dark Hand to be named. (After Valmont and Tohru.)
