Part 9 - A touhou may be able to cut it.

Since we're here in Lavander, our first stop should naturally be the Pokemon Tower. Or rather, the Ghost Tower as it's known in this hack. It's one of the few name changes, really, but it's easy to see why it was changed. Can't exactly call it Pokemon Tower in a Touhoumon game, afterall.

Our rival is here, so at least we're not getting denied this battle. I don't plan to face him just yet though. I'll save it for when I'm doing the tower proper. No, right now I'm here to catch some touhous and show off a...

Oh right. We need something for that. Whoops.

So let's go catch touhous on Route 8 inst-Oh god damn it!

Once I finally pick up Cut, I think I'm going to have some backtracking to do...

At least we can check this place out. I'm sure everyone saw this one coming.

Underground Tunnel Lavender to Celadon Touhous: Evil Eye, CRemilia, CFlandre, CRumia, LilyBlack, DCRemilia (Dark/Flying). Level range is 5 to 20.

The only new touhou here is the one we're interested in. DCRemilia. She's hard to find. Usually. I got pretty lucky and found her on my second use of Sweet Scent, though. Woot!

Her tohodex entry seems a bit lacking compared to the other dark touhous, specifically mentioning that her victims DON'T die. She's a vampire. Of course she's going to feed on people. The fact that she doesn't usually kill them is a step up from most vampires. I mean, sure, it's darker than the Touhou canon where Remilia's source of blood is apparently recently deceased humans from the outside world delivered to her via... some other youkai. Likely Yukari though it's never specifically mentioned.

Anyway! Enough about the tohodex entry. Stat-wise... well, if regular Remilia could be said to be a glass cannon, then dark Remilia is a wet tissue paper nuke. Even her chibi form hits 100 speed and 80 attack. Still doesn't win the record for highest attack for a 1st-stage mon - the Pokemon Cranidos still holds that record at a whoppin' 125 - but that's pretty high especially since she's the unevolved form of a 2-stage evolution chain. By EX, she has a base 155 speed and 140 attack but a push or a light breeze will knock her out. Her ability is Intimidate, which won't really help her survive much.

Once I get the rest of the dark chibis I'll start evolving them to show off their evolved tohodex entries. Hopefully there's some bitter herbs or something hidden somewhere in this game to help in that endeavour...

Remaining dark chibis to be found: DCPatchouli, DCWriggle, DCMomiji.

Now that I think about it, I know where to find DCPatchouli and DCWriggle but goddamit I can't remember where DCMomiji was hidden...

Anyway, the trainers on Route 8 have all been thoroughly trounced and now we can go through the Underground Path to get to Celadon. Or rather, Route 7. THEN Celadon.

Route 7 Touhous: CMystia, CChen, CMedicine, CMomiji, CMeiling.

...Nevermind then. Straight to Celadon.

Well, actually, no. Taking a detour through Saffron, let's make a quick trip in the general direction of Cerulean where there's a certain something waiting for us. Yep, I've breed two touhous! But what's inside? It'll take some time...

Anyway, NOW I go back to Celadon. Since we've done or seen most of the more interesting things here already, let's head straight to the Rocket Game Corner.

Beat up this guy and gain access to Team Rocket's base. Somehow, the old Rocket Base is strangely comforting now...

For those who might not know or remember, you basically just go to the lowest level of the base, grab the lift key, then go back to that level (B4f) via the elevator to beat up a pair of grunts and then Giovanni.

For being Team Rocket's base, this place is actually fairly empty. There's not many grunts around at all. In fact, you trip over far more grunts randomly positioned in the Silph building than the base. Which may be why the base is so empty.

Anyway, beat up all the grunts that ARE her. Raymoo learned a new attack recently and this proved to be a good opportunity to use/abuse it a bit. The technique is called Miko Charity. It's Pay Day, basically. Replaced Pound with it. It's stronger than Seal Needle and gives me some extra cash after battle.

Eventually, we reach this guy who for some reason just drops the Lift Key and then repeatedly complains about dropping it. Buddy, if you don't pick it up, I'm picking it up.

Naturally, I end up taking it while he keeps spouting the same line over and over.

Battle the two grunts blocking Giovanni's room. Easy wins. Then battle Giovanni himself.

Giovanni leads with a DChen. Because of Intimidate, Signum can't hurt it. Switch to Misty and she gets taken out in one lucky Fury Swipes. Switch to Canada to take her out finally with Take Down, but Canada was left hurting after.

DCsuika is next and does a surprising amount of damage to Raymoo with Thunderpunch, crippling her, but Raymoo is able to take her out with Razor Wind.

Finally, his last touhou, DMomiji. It's able to deal a surprising amount of damage to ColdSteel using Double Edge, but between recoil and PrivateSQR, an ice-type attack that has a good chance of inflicing a freeze, ColdSteel manages to beat her.

I didn't expect that battle to be really notable so I didn't record any video, but Giovanni actually gave me a bit of a rough time there...

After a few comments from Giovanni, he leaves and drops the Silph Scope. Apparently everyone in Team Rocket is clumsy. Now, I don't think guns have any place in Pokemon since every creature in pokemon approaches physics pretty much the same way as Gurren Lagann (up to and including having the "power of evolution" I might add), but this seems to be a pretty good case for why Team Rocket wouldn't use them anyway. They'd just end up shooting themselves in the foot.

Now that we have the Silph Scope, we can go back to Ghost Tower and finally catch some damn touhous! And as you might have already guessed, we do that using Sweet Scent.

Ghost Tower Floor 2 Touhous: Ghost, Lunasa (Ghost), Merlin (Ghost), Lyrica (Ghost), CYoumu (Ghost), CYuyuko (Ghost), CMima (Dark/Ghost).

Youmu gains the steel-type upon evolving and has a good 125 base defense and 110 base attack. She's actually more defensive than offensive. At least, on the physical side. Special defense is kinda weak at a base 75. Speed is base 85 and hp is base 80. Her abilities are Insomnia, which prevents sleep, and Inner Focus, which prevents flinching.

Yuyuko gains the grass-type when she evolves and has Levitate for an ability. She's slow and has poor physical defense, but very good special attack at base 130, 110 special defense, and 110 hp. Attack is also quite useable at a base 90. Fittingly, she can learn ice-type TM's. So she can make fairly good use of that special attack at least.

Of course, those two aren't interesting. Why? Because we can catch them in the tower proper.

No, the REALLY interesting touhou here is Mima.

Normally, you couldn't find Mima until somewhere in the Sevii Islands. Which requires you to at least beat the Cinnabar Island gym. But using Sweet Scent here, we can actually find a CMima earlier in the game. Mima's stats are fairly balanced, ranging from 80 to 100, with both offensive stats hitting 100. I would have figured Mima a special attacker myself. I think all thise "good at both offenses" stats for certain touhous is a product of the 3rd gen's type-specific stat usage. Ghost is physical, dark is special. I just find it boring, personally. I'd rather see more specialized touhous.

Hell, their final forms are all "EX" anyway, which is pretty much a ticket to do some really weird shit with their final evolutions since EX forms are fanon to begin with! How much more cooler would Reimu be if her EX form was Fire/Flying? Her sprite could show her throwing burning talismans around or wreathed in flames and holding up a talisman like she's about to attack. Naturally, she'd learn Sacred Fire.

Or how about if Rumia suddenly gained the ability to breathe fire?

Or how about if Yuugi's hands were on fire and made explosions when she punched things?

Adding fire to anything makes it instantly more awesome.

Anyway, enough ranting (for now). We have a gym to face. A gym we don't need cut to get to. Or to beat, in spite of how it looks.

Basically, it's a bit of a maze, but one you could cut straight through if you had the technique. Not really difficult to navigate anyway.

Incidentally, while fighting the trainers here, one informs me that only real ladies are allowed. Apparently Maribel isn't considered a real lady.

I end up running back and forth between the gym and the pokemon center a few times. Since I tend to base my team on who needs exp the most, these grass-type touhous end up giving me some trouble as most of my touhous that are good against grass were still in the PC at the time. While doing all this running around, something interesting happens.

The egg hatches. And no, you're not seeing that wrong. That is, in fact, a CKikuri that hatched from the egg. I think that's about as cute as a weird moon thing with a picture of a girl inside is going to get.

ALL legendary touhous can actually breed in this hack, though, and all have chibi forms. It's not exactly something unique to Touhoumon Blue, though. All the chibi forms are actually from Touhoumon 1.8, where even the strongest legendaries only have base stat totals of 550 or 560. There's non-legendary touhous with those stats in that game. Kinda irksome, really. Not because it makes the legendaries less legendary, but because it just makes you realize that a lot of these touhous could stand to have lower base stat totals. That just brings me back to that earlier rant...

I'll be showing off chibi forms of the other legendaries, too, when I catch them. And yes, that CKikuri CAN, in fact, evolve into Kikuri. Evolves via happiness.

On another note, Melon finally evolves while battling the trainers here.

Anyway, boss time now. After facing Erika once without some of my touhous who are more noticeably suited for the job and losing, I grab a better team to try her again. This time I beat her.

Get pretty lucky in this fight. Signum got a well-timed critical against EShizuha, who was actually responsible for sweeping my team previously but wasn't getting the chance either way this time around, and then with ColdSteel against EMinoriko. I had full confidence in ColdSteel's ability to beat her anyway, but those two freezes helped make it pretty one-sided. Like I said before, PrivateSQR has a pretty good chance of freezing. I think it's like 40%.

And now we're done in Celadon. Next installment, take on the Ghost Tower proper, challenge the fighting "gym", and then head for Fuschia proper.

On another note, if anyone sees any touhous that interest them here or in any other installment, feel free to let me know. Even with 9 touhous I'm not really falling behind level-wise and if I have to start grinding a bit I still have that Lucky Egg and VsSeeker anyway.

...So, the bosses are giving you more trouble in Blue than the bosses in Insane?

I guess that just goes to prove that proper tweaking will result in more difficult (and more enjoyable) battles than just changing things so they seem difficult...

As for more Touhous... I'm sorta new to the Touhoumon hacks, so part of why I'm following these blogs is to learn what choices I want to make before I get to them. So any suggestions as to what Caper Nerd should grab would be nice...

More Touhou, you say? Well, a part of me says that you've already got a balanced team that can be of use all the way to the Elite Four, that I should be glad that both Satoko and Canada ended up being solid members of that team, and that it would be odd if I was the only one that kept suggesting things. And another part of me wonders just what personality that Rinnosuke of yours has, and which Ghost-type you believe is the best to use in this 'generation'. Probably not too much of a burden to you, right?

Oh, and have I mentioned before that you're doing an excellent job with this thing, being witty and informative without having walls of text that blur together into meaninglessness? Because I think that this is still going just dandy, and that you're a very good gamer.
