Hi guys, last time, we found Yang. This time, instead of actually doing what the game wants us to right away, let's go to Mist! Somehow, that big earthquake did not alter the entrance on the west side of town at all.

The fire from before has scarred the land, but people have come back here. All the summoners are dead though. Our bad. The main reason I'm here is to buy a Dancing Dagger. This is a better weapon for Palom, which lets him get in very good damage when used as an item, better than Yang's physical. We also find a Polymorph Rod, which can turn monsters into pigs. I don't really like it, as I could also use that time to kill things. There's also a Gold Hairpin for Porom that halves thunder elemental damage.

Now it's story time. In the west of Baron, there's a locked door. We unlock it with the Baron Key, and it takes us to the Ancient Waterway. Most things here are weak to thunder or ice, so Yang's elemental claws rack up kills very easily.

We start on B4 and head onward to B3. This area is a maze of hidden passages, and there's not even anything useful in the chests here! Porom learns Teleport and Palom learns Bio on the way through this room. Bio is an awesome spell, it inflicts Sap, which I believe is another thing nothings immune to.

B2 has another secret passage, but all it gets us is an Ether. We start encountering Baron Guardsmen, which is a sign we're near the end.

In B1, we find a save point, and behind that, the Ancient Sword, it can inflict Curse, but it's weak and I don't particularly like it.

We then find ourselves in the back of Baron Castle. We can use Cecil's bed to heal up, and we do so. We then head into the middle of the castle.

Huh, this place is kinda empty... Inside...

Sir Cecil!

Baigan shows up.

Baigan: So good of you to return.

Go away, I don't like you.

Cecil: Baigan... Are you...?

Baigan: Is something the matter?

Yes, you're a dick. That's the matter. Baigan claims that he is not on Golbez's side. I guess that's something. We ask about Cid.

Baigan: I, too, have attempted to find him, but my men and I were attacked and I was the only one to survive...

Well, crap.

Cecil: What is happening here...? You must join us, Baigan. We will serve Baron together.

Baigan: It would be an honour to join you, Sir Cecil.

Captain Baigan of the Royal Guards has joined the party.

But, what? There's only five party slots and no way to swap. What?

Palom and Porom agree that something's up and stop following us.

Cecil: What is it?

Palom: Something's wrong.

Porom: Yes. I sense danger.

Baigan: What!? Like... a... monster?

Palom: Oh, give me a break.

Porom: Sorry, sir, but if you wish to put on an act, perhaps you should do a more convincing job of it.

Cecil: Baigan! You would also betray Baron for Golbez!?

Baigan: Golbez's wishes are Baron's wishes. He has granted a wonderful power to me. Observe the might he grants to Baron!

And he attacks us. In retrospect, the fact that he doesn't have a portrait should have made this obvious. Anyway, Baigan and his arms make three different monsters. Baigan will put Reflect on himself if a spell hits him, so our mages will be going after the arms while Cecil and Yang wreck the body. Palom joins in on that too with the Dancing Dagger. He revives his arms after a while, but it's not a problem. We kill him pretty easily.

Palom: Ha! Nothing to it!

Cecil: Even Baigan, who seemed so loyal...

You're an idiot, Cecil. We heal up at Cecil's bed again, then explore a bit. We find some mostly useless items (and an Elixir). There's one pathway still blocked right now though. We then head for the throne room.

King: Cecil, you have returned! I am glad to see you safe.

Cecil: Thank you.

King: I see you have become a paladin. Paladins are of little use; a dark knight would be more useful to us.

I don't see how. Attack everything in exchange for slowly killing yourself, or Magic Knight? I'd go with the paladin.

Cecil: Your Majesty...?

King: Your who? Oh, you must mean the old duffer who refused to surrender this kingdom. Hahaha, I must say I've enjoyed impersonating him.

Oh hell. This can't be good. We ask what happened to the real king.

King: You'll see him soon enough. Oh, and give my regards to Scarmiglione if you run into him in hell. That weakling never deserved to be one of the four elemental archfiends. The rest of us are more powerful than him.

Cecil: Then you are...!?

The fake king turns into a turtle!

King: Behold! I am the Lord of Water, Cagnazzo!

And he attacks us. Same music as the second Scarmiglione fight, which is still awesome. Anyway, Cagnazzo is a simple fight at the start, he's weak to ice, oddly, so we spam that at him. But then...

Torrents of water draw up!

Now he's weak to thunder, and if we don't cast it ASAP, he'll start pummelling us. One thunder spell will remove the barrier. After a while, he engages Turtle Defence and starts healing himself. Not a problem. He dies in like three rounds. After the battle, Porom learns Esuna and Cecil learns Cura.

???: You beast! How dare you...!

Cid runs in!

Cid: Someone's gonna get a complimentary face-beating for locking me up in that sty! ...Eh?

Cecil: Cid!

Cid: Cecil? You're alive! you had me worried!

Cecil: I'm sorry...

Cid: Where's Rosa!? She went after you, convinced that you were still alive.

Cecil: Golbez has taken her...

Cid: What!? How could you let that happen? First my airship, now my Rosa!

Sorry, too distracted by the music.

Tellah: And she's still in trouble, so stop your jabbering and take us to your airship!

Cid: Who is this snippy octogenarian?

Tellah: I could say the same thing to you!

Um, he's only 54, Tellah.

Cid: What!? I'm half your age, and then some!

Porom stops the two from killing each other and introduces everyone.

Palom: So now we'll have another geezer on board.

Yeah, pretty much. We ask Cid about the location of the new airship.

Cid: Heh heh. Where nobody would suspect.

Tellah: We do not have time for your strange humours, man! Rosa's life is in danger!

Cid: I know, I know! You don't have to shout, we're not all deaf like you. Everyone, follow me!

We all head into the next room.

???: Hahahaha... You have defeated me, but you have not heard the last of Cagnazzo. Now join me in hell!

The room starts shaking.

Tellah: The walls!

The room starts shrinking! We try the doors.

Cid: It's locked!

Tellah: This side is locked, too!

Palom and Porom approach the walls.

Cecil: Palom! Porom!

Palom: I guess there's only one thing to do, huh, Porom?

Porom: Cecil, I'm so glad we were able to meet. You've been like a brother to us.

Tellah: What are you going to do!?

Palom: We're not gonna let you die, that's for sure!

Porom: We thank you for everything you've taught us, Sage Tellah.

Palom: Ready?

Porom: Yes!

Um, you know the doors are made of wood, right?

Cecil: No!

Palom & Porom: Break!

They grab the walls just before they turn to stone. The walls stop moving.

Cecil: Palom! Porom!

Tellah: Hold on! Esuna!

The spell has no effect, as the twins have become stone of their own will.

Crap. So... How are we gonna explain this to the Elder?

Tellah: You fools...! I am an old man! It was my duty, not yours!

Yang: Forgive me, you two...

Tellah: I will avenge you both, I swear to it!

Cid: It's time for some payback! To the Enterprise!

Cecil: You will pay for their sacrifice... ...Golbez!

Meanwhile, in the fortress of who knows where... (Seriously, it's not on the world map)

Golbez: He defeated Cagnazzo. His power continues to grow.

Kain: Sir, regarding the last Crystal...

Golbez: I know. That place remains a problem.

Kain: Then let Cecil go retrieve it for us.

Golbez: Hmm..

Kain: I'm certain he will comply. After all, we have Rosa. We can exchange her for the last Crystal.

Golbez: A primitive idea, but it may work. Then I will destroy him at the time of exchange.

Kain: I shall go to convey your terms to him.

Rosa: Kain!

Kain: Rosa, you'll see soon enough that I am superior to Cecil.

Back at Baron, turns out there's a false wall in one of the main chambers that Cid uses to hide his airship.

Yang: Amazing...

Tellah: I am impressed...

Cid: Yup! Ain't she a beaut! Let's get her up and going!

The Enterprise takes off, and we now own an airship!

Cid: Battle stations! Time to unleash the power of the Enterprise!

Cecil: Wait!

Yang: What is that?

Tellah: A white flag?

A Red Wings ship flies up to us.

Cecil: Kain!

Kain: Heh! So you're still among the living.

Cid: Kain! You traitor...!

Cecil: Where is Rosa? You would not... harm her, would you?

Nah, the Love Triangle would be completely wrecked if that happened.

Kain: If you want her back, bring me the Earth Crystal.

Cecil: What!?

Tellah: You shameless dog!

Kain: I will come to you once you have the Crystal in your possession. And if Rosa means anything to you, you'll get that Crystal.

Yang: Why, you...

Cecil: Wake up, Kain!

Kain: I have nothing else to say to you.

He leaves. We decide that we have no choice but to head to Troia.

Well, let's discuss our new party member. Cid Pollendina is an Engineer His weapon of choice? Hammers. He's slow, but hits like a truck. He also has Analyze, which is a free Libra. Not much to say about him, but he is one of the best damage dealers in the game. He starts at level 20.

That's all for now. Next time, we have an airship, so we'll fly around and do stuff.

It is NEVER good news when the party gets over five people strong in this game. The plot always manages to get us back under the limit.

Cid is another one of my favorite characters in this game. Mostly because he's a funny little biker viking guy.

I enjoy Cid a lot for his role in the storyline, but I don't really care for him as a playable character — mostly because he's most often there at the same time as Yang, and the two of them are kinda redundant. We're a bit lacking in magical power right now (Tellah's our main magic offense but has annoyingly low MP, and that puts Cecil into the medic role, which isn't something he's very good at).

That is one of the things I like about this game, though. They try to make the plot justify some of the game mechanics. The inability to have Esuna fix Palom and Porom is another example.

Cid is certainly not worth two mages as a playable character. The fights got a lot harder for me at this point.

I'm in complete agreement with you there : while most other JRPGs leave you some room to customize your team from very early on, FF 4 never leaves you a choice in the matter and forces drastic party changes every other dungeon. You can never quite settle into a routine, and must learn how to use every single character in your party : you can't just ignore them and pick someone else. It's a refreshing approach that makes FF 4 distinct from other games. It's harder to play, but quite satisfying (and it makes the plot even more immersive).

... Which is why I don't really care for the GBA bonus of restoring previously-"eliminated" characters into the party for the finale : it kinda runs counter to the whole gameplay concept. (But then, I've never played the GBA version... or actually finished the game.)

Cid is definitely not worth the trade-off. I also find him kind of lacking too, where the other pure melee characters get some special ability to work around, Cid gets a free Libra. Give me his DS version moveset over this one any day.

I do, however, think that the party swap still has the spirit of being unable to settle into routine, as to get the full experience out of the game, you have to go through each of the dungeons with more than five party members (6 with the Cave of Trials, 9 for the L. Subterrane and all 10 for the L. Ruins), so you have to keep swapping everyone around and mess with your strategies and all that.

The stretch with Yang, Cid, Cecil and Tellah is the second hardest stretch of the game, IMO. You're sorely lacking in magic, and your two healers are one who's magic abilities are meh and the other one has a dry MP pool.

Really, FFIV stands out as the game in the franchise where you have to make do with what you're dealt with by the plot (save for the DS-only Augments), but given how customizable its predecessor and successor are, it's just more jarring.

@Some Color Mage: Yeah, a free scan was fun for all of two or three battles at most. The extra dungeons do sound interesting but doesn't the party swap mess with the plot?

@Kinkajou: The random encounters in this part were harder than the previous bosses for me. Especially since I tend to use heavy defense tactics which is hard with such limited healing.

@Jhiday: I actually liked FFIV more than FFVI, in part because of the limited customization.

Eh, somewhat. The lines for a few characters are changed around and it can be a bit jarring. I have to do the final boss twice (I plan to do original party first, then Cecil, Cid, Yang, Porom and Edward), so when that time comes, you can judge for yourself.

Eponymous Kid: Efficiency reasons. If I bring both, I need to do a third run of the Subterrane to get all of the Ruins unlocked, where if I only bring one of the twins, I can get it all unlocked in two.

No unequipping the twins before the Cagnazzo battle? He dies after one Thundaga from Tellah and a few other spells/attacks from the rest of the party, so the lack of defense doesn't even matter.

Cid does become pretty useful once he gets the Gaia Hammer — free multi-target damage that takes the load off Tellah's low MP. Too bad there's only a small time window for that.
