3: It's Only Grassy on the Outside

The front door to the Grass Temple is locked, but luckily, there is a convenient red button for Frum to press so that he can enter.

There are two paths in the first room - one leading left and one leading right. Frum heads right, and Lee spots a switch on the opposite wall. They can't press it because it's on the other side of a small pool. The switch appears to be what's keeping the door from opening, so Frum simply opens the treasure chest to take a key and returns from the room where he came.

Frum uses his key to open up the locked door after dispatching the slimes and skeleton in the room. The slimes are weaklings like the rabbits, and are dispatched in one hit. The skeletons are slightly tougher, and have swords of their own.

This not-so-grassy Grass Temple is also home to cave-dwelling bats. Frum's unable to attack it until it swoops down to his level. The path splits two ways again, and Frum opts to go left for now instead of straight ahead.

There is a chest being blocked by a ring of blocks in this room. Lee suggests pushing some of them out of the way so that they can reach it. There are two blocks on the bottom side that have differently-shaped tops than the others. Frum uses his basic pushing strength to shove one of them aside and retrieve another key.

As he goes up one room from where he just was, the doors shut behind him and a small group of enemies appear. After he defeats them, the doors open and a treasure chest appears, revealing a map of the temple. He stops for a moment to read his new map to find out where he needs to go. The temple is only one floor deep, so he doesn't have a whole lot of exploring to do. He notices a peculiar red lock in one of the rooms. Frum wonders how he can get his hands on a red key as he goes through the locked door into the next room.

Lee spots a pair of cannons in the center of the room. Frum tries to block their magic beams with his shield, but the beams pass right through and cause damage to him anyway.

In the room on the right, there are two more wall switches. All Frum has to do to trigger them is walk right next to them. Convenient, huh? Hitting both switches opens the door and reveals a chest in the middle of the room. Frum pushes through the ring of blocks and scores a boomerang for his trouble.

Frum goes into the next room and finds an opportunity to try out his new toy. The boomerang stuns his enemies long enough for him to beat them into submission, and it also triggers the switch on the opposite side of the pool. Doing this reveals a second treasure chest in the room, which contains a key (in addition to the 10 gold coins he looted from the chest next to it). Frum wanders back to the room where he saw the first wall switch and hits it with his boomerang, opening the door to the other side of the temple.

According to his map, there are two more regular locked doors, but he only has one key. He uses the one key on the door to his left because he's curious to see if there's a way to open the red door. There are four buttons in the room, and a chest is revealed when all of them are pressed. The chest contains a key, but not the one necessary to open the big red door. This one is black and scary-looking, so he figures that it opens the door to the boss room. He also believes that the remaining normal key must be somewhere close by. His hunch proves correct, as he finds a key in a chest two rooms over.

Frum follows the darkened areas of his map to a room with a tablet in the corner that reads, "Glory shines upon one who banishes darkness." Frum isn't sure what to make of the cryptic clue, as it sounds like something your run-of-the-mill "wise old man"-type NPC would say. (Besides, he hadn't thought to bring any torches with him.) Killing the enemies in here doesn't open the door, but it does give him a treasure chest with a small block in it.

The room to the left of this spot contains a scary-looking door on the north side. Lee sees a switch nearby, so she tells Frum to step on it. The switch has activated a teleporter, which leads the two of them back to the entrance. Frum takes a deep breath and unlocks the door with his spooky key.

A giant snake slithers into view, ready to strike at Frum. According to the great philosopher and "monsterologist" Strata G. Guyd, this snake is known as Eelagon. It crawls around the arena, shooting energy balls toward Frum. Lee turns Frum's attention toward its tail, which is conspicuously flashing. Frum strikes it with his sword, causing it to explode into bits and shorten the monster. With each segment of its body removed, Eelagon gets angrier and angrier, moving faster and faster until only its head remains. Frum tries to keep his distance from the snake head until he can get a few good shots in without being struck by its energy balls. After a few more attacks, Eelagon goes down, exploding into a shower of coins. A Life Container apple descends from the sky, so Frum takes it and does his best Item Get! pose before going into the next room.

An old man greets Frum and Lee and commends them for defeating Eelagon. The man tells him that he is Indy, the Sage of the Grass Plains. Lee tells him that she and Frum are looking for the Orbs, so Indy rewards Frum for his heroic deed by giving him the Yellow Orb. The orbs are said to contain magic greater than any magic one could find in 2D, and the sages were given a task to entrust the orbs to a hero. Just by holding the orb, Frum realizes the power of his very first Shader Magic spell: Parallax. It has the power to uncover secrets written on Tabula Rasa tablets, and on certain dungeon floors. Indy suggests that they head further northwest, toward the Forest Temple, which lies beyond the Forest of No Return.

When Frum returns to the boss room on his way out of the temple, he notices a pillar now sits in the middle, where it's possible to revive the boss for a return engagement. Frum decides that he's had enough, and goes back to Raejack Village to take a break.
