Prologue: Fortress of the Light

My predictions for The Dragon Reborn:

-Like I said at the end of the last book, this one will focus on Rand developing from the Failure Hero he was at the climax, becoming someone who deserves the reputation he now has.

-Thom will meet up with Selene, and she’ll turn her attention to trying to corrupt him now that Rand is out of reach. Domon may also be involved with the subplot.

-We’ll find out what Bors was supposed to be doing, after The Great Hunt’s prologue really didn’t seem to go anywhere.

-Ingtar and Geofram are both still alive, neither’s death having actually been witnessed.

Pedron Nial, the leader of the Whitecloaks, hears reports from Byar and Carridin that mostly just serve to remind us of what happened at the end of the last book. But then he oddly enough gets his own Crowning Moment Of Awesome when he puts a marvelous Oh, Crap! feeling into Carridin by threatening to turn him in to his own men if he fails again. And now he’ll have to keep Rand alive, as Nial believes the foretold Last Battle is a Trolloc invasion that can only be survived if every country is banded together, like if they all had to team up to stop Rand. And there’s a wormy guy named Ordeith who’s been advising him lately, who’s clearly Fain. And that’s not the only twist, as Carridin is revealed to be a Darkfriend, and is ordered to kill Rand. Well, if you try to play both sides, that’ll happen sooner or later.

Suddenly Nial is a good deal more engaging, and possibly a new candidate for the Magnificent Bastard of the series, after Turak was such a disappointment. And of course, Carridin’s predicament is quite fun given how nasty the guy is. I now have suspicions that he might be Bors from book two’s prologue, after that seemed to come to nothing in that book.

Balefire is risky to use for another reason that never seems to deter anyone. But you won't hear about that yet.

You think Mat has a bad case of misplaced chivalry, wait until Rand has to fight women and/or order them into battle...sheesh.

Sammael detecting Moiraine's balefire? Practically laughable. Possible under certain circumstances yes, but still terribly unlikely.
